Featuring: One Passage Street, another award win for AWW and multiple planning consents!
With a passion for design excellence and a dedication to client satisfaction, we bring visions to life, shaping tomorrow’s landscapes one project at a time.
This month is a significant one for
multiple project development.
Another big month at AWW has passed us by, with lots of projects going into planning AND more award wins! Excitingly, this win is for the practice. The Constructing Excellence South West ESG category shed light on the operational values of our culture and ethos as a business that prioritises ESG for the practice and our people. Also helping to strengthen our commitment to delivering our ESG strategy across our projects.
On another great note, multiple projects successfully achieved planning this month. The projects among the list are; One Passage Street, Exeter College, Brunswick Wharf and ATS. I want to congratulate the teams on achieving approval on these projects and allowing them to move forward to the following Stages.
We have just been awarded a place on the B&NES Framework, what an exciting opportunity for the practice. You can read more about how it could benefit us on page 18.
New updates to the AWW Intranet to make it a useful resource for you all. With new documents and policies being added all the time so that it stays up-to-date. Remember, we want to develop and add to it as time goes on, so if you have any feedback - contact Team Marketing.
Thank you all for another great month. Bring on the next!

We have now secured planning approval for One Passage Street!
“The exemplar sustainable design sets a new standard in developing NCZ (Net Carbon Zero) workspaces which positively contribute to the redevelopment of the city centre.” Emma Wan
AWW have now secured a delegated planning approval for One Passage Street in Bristol, which will be a highly sustainable commercial office sitting alongside Bristol’s floating harbour. Fantastic work by the team (list all those involved) to achieve approval through a delegated decision allowing the project to move on to the next stage.
The design of the office development of approximately 160,000 sqft GIA, with an unprecedented 15,367 sqft of this being terraces and landscaping.
The larger occupier focused terraces include soft landscaping which contributes to the scheme’s biodiversity net gain of 167%. This is significantly over the current guidance of 110% gain. A key focus of the design is the communal and amenity spaces linked with landscaping and terraces green in more ways than one.
Sustainability is at the core of the design.

“This highly sustainable development is the missing piece of an important streetscape that provides a vibrant, attractive and pleasant environment for office occupiers and those seeking access to Bristol’s iconic harbour in this part of Bristol City Centre.”

The Distillery Estate of Royal London, formerly known as ‘Glassfields’, has two vacant development sites left.
The Distillery Estate
The design for the masterplan consists of designs for two buildings and a high quality public realm design for the entire site.
The office buildings, with working titles: Distillery 3 and 4 aim to be among the most sustainable, state-of-the-art in Bristol.
Distillery 3 will be a gateway building introducing the Distillery site from Temple Way. Distillery 4 will be a more modest building central on the distillery site in a green setting.
We are currently in Stage 2 of the design and investigating different façade designs and materials.
As of this morning (25 July) Brunswick Wharf has
Planning Consent!!
With a vote of 7 to 2 in favour and without any additional challenging planning conditions - congratulations team!
Topic: Constructing Excellence
Oops we did it again!
Making it a record breaking award year; AWW has won the Constructing Excellence South West Environmental, Social and Governance Award 2024.
Big Award News
We sent a fantastic crew; Jason, Hollie, Chris, Heather and Tasha to represent AWW and spend an evening beneath Concorde’s wingspan! A well deserved win in recognition of all the hard work that the ESG and Social Value Team have put in to developing the way in which we operate. Congratulations everyone, a definite positive step further along our way to achieving Social Value Quality Mark Gold.
We are now on the
B&NES Framework
Topic: What could this framework do for us?
So...what does this mean?
We have won a place on the new B&NES Architectural Services Framework. This has a contract duration of 4 years, and we are one of 6 architects appointed to the Framework. The other winning practices are; Hayhurst & Co, BBA, Purcell, Ferguson Mann and Kendall Kingscott.
Projects will primarily be for the Council and will include general architectural design services in addition to historic building conservation projects for both refurbishment and new build.
Sectors include; schools, later living and extracare, sport and leisure and residential with construction values ranging from £50k to £5m and with an indicative annual fee spend of £500k-£1.5m.
The Council’s estate includes around 1,200 properties ranging from small commercial buildings to the Roman Baths. It includes school development, modifications and extensions, along with regional infrastructure, highway and transportation works.
The aims of the Framework Agreement are to develop mutually beneficial, collaborative relationships. Charles is the AWW Framework Director, with Dave shadowing, and Heather, Lindsay and Alex forming the rest of the AWW team members. Our named sub-team consists of Heritage Architecture (Conservation), Greengage (Ecology), LDA Design (Landscape), Bosky Trees (Arboriculture) and JLL (Planning).
Examples of work which could come through the framework:
• External refurbishment of building fabric to listed buildings and those within conservation areas
• Internal refurbishment and alterations of listed buildings
• External and internal adaptations of buildings
• Interior design associated with re-use or refurbishment
• Masterplanning of areas of the World Heritage City including re-imagining areas of public realm and or highway networks and their curtilage buildings
• Refurbishment of void and or dilapidated listed buildings
• Change of use including residential development
• Works arising through the analysis and implementation of complex remedial works to address structural decay in listed buildings (including Grade 1)
• Commercial property refurbishment
• Office interior design
• Extensions
• New buildings
• Architectural works arising from civils requirements e.g. footbridges, cycle paths etc. and associated building elements
IT Update
Topic: New software options
Potential Software: Affinity
We are currently exploring new software options to meet all our design needs.
In doing so, we’re looking for some willing volunteers to try Affinity for us.
We’re keen to find the best product, that suits us. If you’d be interested in being involved in a trial and help contribute to this decision or have any questions then please give the IT Team a shout.
In other news, we will be updating and improving our servers in the next few months.
This will be in preparation for the new 2025 versions.
We’ll keep you regularly updated on progress as the changes come in but for now we wanted to share a brief overview of the change.
We are going to unify our current project drives I: and J: under a single drive letter H:
Project Files (I:) + Project Files (J:) =
This will be the new home for all project data wherever you work from. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum, but as we move the projects across Revit central files will need to be re-saved and InDesign links will need to be re-pathed too which will impact work slightly. We will give everyone good warning of when this will happen to avoid moving your project on a deadline day.
If you have any questions, queries or concerns do get in touch.
