August Newsletter 2024

Featuring: Shorts Gardens, more awards and AWW Funfest 2024

Driven by a passion for design excellence and a commitment to client satisfaction, we bring visions to life, transforming tomorrow’s landscapes one project at a time.

As we step into Quarter Three, we’re thrilled to kick things off with a major recruitment drive to keep up with our growing workload!

Please join me in welcoming our new team members: Lauren, Ludo, Sam, Libby, Olivia, and AJ. Their addition will help us continue to support you all and strengthen AWW as we move forward with our planned growth for 2024.

I’m also excited to share some fantastic news: Simon Hatcher is joining us as a Director and Phil DeSouza as an Associate. These new appointments are key to our goal this year to expand our presence in the public sector, with a particular focus on enhancing our expertise in the education sector. Simon, who has been leading his own practice, brings a wealth of experience in education projects, and Phil has been an invaluable part of his team. Together, they will help us build on our existing skills and strengthen our relationships with clients, aligning perfectly with our strategic goals and you never know, helping support the education of the next generation of construction professionals!

Your calendars have been marked for Friday 4th October, when we’ll be hosting this year’s AWW Fun Fest! We’ve got an exciting line-up of activities planned, including bowling, I’ve heard whispers of beer pong, and more, followed by dinner and drinks on Bristol’s harbourside.

It’s a fantastic chance for both studios to come together, unwind, and enjoy some quality time outside of work. Also… stay tuned for your invite to the End of Year Celebrations, where we’ll get another chance to celebrate together.

Thank you all for your continued hard work and dedication and hopefully you have treated yourself to a few weeks off over the summer. Here’s to another great month ahead!

We’re excited to share a selection with you.

Featuring: Fabulous Facades.

Facades play a vital role in a building’s performance, sustainability and visual appeal, serving as the interface between the structure and it’s surroundings while seamlessly blending form, function and technology.

Can you name the projects?

Social Value

Topic: MWC social value visit outcomes

This month, we conducted a postoccupancy survey with Greengage on the Mary Ward Centre, using the RIBA Social Value Toolkit to turn qualitative insights into quantitative data. This helps us assess and improve the project’s impact on occupants.

Has the new building improved this workplace?

On a scale of 1-5 does the building...

encourage staff connection?

help encourage you to stop and talk with people?

increased confidence?

resolved issues of the new building?

design lifts spirits?

give you a sense of pride?

improve wellbeing?

Light airy spaces...old building was oppressive and dark.”

Love that there’s no noise pollution from the street within the building, feels very peaceful inside.”
The move has led to a relaunch of Mary Ward in terms of marketing and re-branding. The aim is to become less reliant on government funding.”

Being used by 50 SMEs for networking which is a great way to promote MWC and embed into the community.”

Topic: Safer London

AWW Skills Share & Careers Afternoon

31.07.2024 the London Office hosted Safer London for a Skills Share / Careers Talk event. This is a quick written summary in lieu of photographs.

3 youngsters were welcomed from the VIP programme (children most affected by difficult circumstances) at Safer London along with some of their staff for a presentation on architecture. The aim was to offer some thoughts / guidance towards their futures, and to share skills that might help with a range of possible careers.

Alex G started with some of the basics, general design principles and considerations, typical problems we solve, qualification routes, the shape of the profession / wider industry and some of our work. David W went further into design and creative problem solving with Xenos B finishing on how we approach more technical things like detailing.

They then took part in a design task: A London park pavilion. We gave examples of pavilions and explained how we might conceptualise designs and did a quick drawing tutorial - ending up with a nice range of designs! From a football pitch, to a steel structure and stained glass ceiling, and the award winning entry that had silhouetted windows the illuminated at different times of the day.

Ending with a Q&A session and short office tour.

All in all, a fun little afternoon and some solid staff hours donated.

It was a really interesting and engaging afternoon... the young people are a little shy sometimes but outside they were full of questions and thoughts about their futures and career ideas so i think it really got them inspired.”

AWW Interviews

Some of you may have noticed that we have a new member within the business support team! A very warm welcome to Natasha McGrath who joins AWW a Partnership Lead.

1. Hi, tell us a little bit about yourself in one sentence?

I have been involved in Business Development in the construction industry ever since graduating from Cardiff University . I am married, live in Portishead with my husband Liam, Stepson Joseph and our dog Bruce.

2. Share with us one surprising fact that people may not know about you?

I play the piano and built my own home with my husband (which we completed the Christmas before COVID).

3. What three items would you bring on a desert island?

Without thinking about how to stay alive! I would take speaker (for music), pillow (I am a bad sleeper) and my paddle board.

4. What skill would you like to master?

Would love to be able to play the piano without having to read the music.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be?

Put 100% into life, not work...and if you can, do it with a smile on your face and a drink in your hand :)

6. If you can visit anywhere in the world where would you choose and why?

I’d travel around Italy – We have never made the time to do this properly.

7. Last but not least, what’s your favourite dad joke?

Why couldn’t the elephant eat the penguin? Because he couldn’t get the wrapper off.
