B HEART HOME ROOM DISPLAYS Home (Room) is where the HEART is! When given the challenge of creating a display that reflected the College's HEART values of Honesty, Endeavour, Atawhai, Respect and Tenacity while also showcasing the unique character of their home room class, our students came up with some very creative designs! The displays were shortlisted by Year Level Deans, before being judged by the Positive Behaviour for Learning team, and the results announced at Monday's assembly. Congratulations to all our finalists, Year Level winners - and the overall winner of the competition (and of the pizza lunch prize): 10DYL! Finalists: Year 9: PAW Year 10: DYL Year 11: FRA Year 12: NOR Year 13: HUE Special mention: 13HGL Overall winner: 10DYL

TERM 1 WEEK 7 11 March 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL With Polyfest taking place next week, I want to acknowledge all the hard work of our students, staff, tutors and families who have shown such dedication in making each performance possible. As always, it is exciting to see our school community's dedication to excellence extending beyond the classroom as we celebrate cultural diversity at this significant annual event. I wish each group all the very best next week. It was also exciting to see the creative expression of the College's HEART values come to life on the walls of each home room this week. Well done to all who put such time and thought into creating their class displays. Mrs L Watkinson Principal

75TH JUBILEE [8-10 May 2020] Bookings for our 75th Jubilee are now open! The reunion weekend is packed with events for former students, staff, board members, and also our wider community! Please share the news with anyone you know will be interested! Book here:

From the Head Boy: "If I could describe Avcol with only one word it would be: "opportunities". Sitting as a scared Year 9 student in this huge school was nerve wracking for me, and in order to find something to do at lunch times I joined as many clubs as I could, some of which I still have a passion for this very day. For me, the most important thing is to have fun doing what you love. Not every activity you choose to do you’ll love, but there is definitely something out there for everyone. My number one piece of advice is to just give it a go." - Dylan Chand, Head Boy 2020 From the Head Girl: "Kia ora! When I first came here in Year 9 I was pretty nervous. I had no idea what high school would bring for me and felt like a tiny fish in a big sea. Now that I’ve been here for a while, I have learned that Avcol is a place to become 'you'. It’s a place to try new things, make new friends, make mistakes, take risks and do things you would never even think to do before. I challenge you all to take the opportunity to do something you want to do. We have an insane amount of clubs and groups and amazing teachers who will support you 100%. There really is something for everyone!" - Olivia Mallon - Head Girl 2020

We had some great results at the NZ Track and Field Championships over the weekend. Blessing Sefo in Year 10 won a silver medal in the under 18 men’s shot put; an incredible achievement at just 14 years old. Tremayne Redman-Gardner won a bronze medal in the under 18 men’s high jump, and a silver medal in the U18 men’s 110m hurdles. Lex Revell-Lewis is a national champion, winning a gold medal in the U18 400m race. Joanna Poland is also a national champion, winning the under 18 women’s 800m. She also won a bronze in the 1500m. Highlights in the field were Blessing Sefo winning the Intermediate Boys Shot Put, with Junior Boy team mate Mose Faaumuumu also winning the Shot Put event for his grade. Tremayne Redman-Gardner dominated the High Jump and surprised everyone with an astonishing Long Jump measure. Hayley Greenhalgh won her High Jump event, and Arinze Michael followed in his sister's footsteps (former Avcol athlete Maclani Michael) with a win on the Triple Jump. Cheyenne Samoa-Tofilau placed well in the Javelin event, qualifying for champs. The results speak for themselves and Avondale College is proving to be a very strong athletic school and a force on the track and field.

The 1st XI Boys got their first win of the season, beating Pakuranga College by 29 runs. Batting first, captain Nathan Powell let the attack, scoring 77 runs off 78 balls. That helped Avondale get 191/9 after their 50 overs. Our bowlers were able to get Pakuranga all out for just 162, thanks to Abhishek Lal’s 5/30. Well done to the boys who will be looking to carry on their form and stay in their grade for next season. Our 1st XI Girls took on Northcote College. The girls bowled extremely well in the first innings, restricting Northcote to 72 runs, all out in the 12th over. While chasing, Avondale were losing wickets frequently, but Hetanshi Chauhan kept the innings together and remained at the crease until the end to bring the team home in the 13th over. Avondale taking the win by 2 wickets. The Junior A Boys had a great win against Rangitoto College. Luke Smardon bowled very well, taking 5 wickets for 10 runs, helping Avondale bowl out the opposition for 60. The run chase was very straight forward, chasing down the total in 17 overs. Well done to Cameron Pereira who top scored with 27. It was a tough loss for the Year 9 Boys on Saturday, who went down to Mt Albert Grammar. The boys were unable to chase down the target of 158, scoring 87/7. Haripreet Kodla bowled well, taking 3/17.

AKSS Central Western Zones Tuesday 10th March saw a bus load of school qualifiers attend the AKSS Central Western Zones all hoping to make it through to the College Sport Auckland Athletics Championships on March 25th. An astounding number of athletes from Avondale College have been named as automatic qualifiers (33!), and our black singlet presence was felt by all the other schools participating. Over the coming week, more of our athletes will be named as next tier qualifiers after the North Harbour Zones meet is completed and spots on the start line and in field events need to be filled. Highlight performances on the track yesterday included Tex Beattie claiming the 1st spot for 100m and 200m, Lex Revell-Lewis owning the 200m and 400m, Georgia Whelan proving an incredible sprint force in the 100m and 200m, Le'Oxeayn Maiu'u in her hurdles and 400m, Joanna Poland with firsts in both the 800m and 1500m, Kadin Taylor and Arinze Michael showing incredible speed in the 100m and 200m, and our distance and middle distance boys (Ayub Sayid, Wiremu Ngamotu, Ethan Hardy and Oliver Groube) showing promise for the next round.

LAWN BOWLS

We had two teams compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Pairs Championships on Monday. Harakh McDermott and Parth Trivedi paired up and played very well, finishing 3rd in Auckland. Ryan Banks and Ilya Shilov were unfortunately knocked out of their quarter final; however, they were able to finish inside the top 8. On their way to the quarter finals, Ryan and Ilya beat last year’s two Auckland champions, sending them out of the competition. All in all a successful day for the Avondale College Lawn Bowls team.

SWIMMING

Avondale College Swimming Gala On Thursday 5th March, our annual Avondale Swimming Gala was held at West Wave Aquatic Centre. We had a lot of great swimmers attend and some great performances in the pool as well. These swimmers were competing for a place in the Avondale team for the upcoming Central Western Zone Swimming Championships, and we had many students qualify which was awesome to see. There are a high number of promising Year 9 students coming through, which strengthens our core bunch of competitive swimmers even further. Best of luck to those who have qualified for Central West Zones. Auckland Long Course Championships Over the weekend, we had a number of Avondale College students compete at the Auckland Age Group Long Course Championships, held at West Wave. Our swimmers achieved some great results. Olivia Stairmand: 1500m Freestyle (Open) – Bronze Jacob Laurence: 400m Freestyle (Age 15) – Gold. 200m Backstroke (Age 15) – Silver. 100m Backstroke (Age 15) – Bronze. 50m Backstroke (Age 15) – Bronze. Alex Dunkley: 200m Butterfly (Age 14) – Gold. 1500m Freestyle (Open) – Silver. 800m Freestyle (Open) – Bronze. Well done to all our swimmers, including Ingrid Longstaff and Paige Laurence. We would also like to acknowledge Olivia Stairmand, Alex Dunkley, Jacob Laurence and Jayden Collins, who have all qualified for the 2020 AON NZ National Age Group Championships to be held in Wellington on the 15th-19th of April. TENNIS

Our Senior Girls tennis team had yet another win on Saturday, this time it was a 5-4 win over Green Bay. This put the girls 13 points clear at the top of the table, having gone 3 from 3 so far.

VOLLEYBALL

Our two Senior Volleyball teams head into Auckland Championships this week. Our Senior Girls won their Western Zone tournament, winning every game to give them good momentum heading into this week’s tournament. The Senior Boys will be looking for a top 9 finish to secure their place in the Premier Grade next season, so good luck to them.

Daphne Jones

WATER POLO

It was a great game for our Senior Waterpolo team over the weekend, beating Lynfield 4-3. Conal Martin scored 2 goals, whilst Fin Perry and Zach Martin pitched in with a goal each. Olivia Lyon played in goal in the first half and made some great saves to keep Lynfield scoreless in the half.

TAUREWA CAMP

taurewa@avcol.school.nz Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight! Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa in Term 1 and Year 12's in Term 2. Taurewa Camp is an optional camp offered as a co-curricular activity and has a substantial overnight component. Therefore, it is permitted under the Ministry of Education donation scheme to request a contribution from parents to assist with covering the cost of camp. Students who do not participate will continue with their usual programme of learning at school. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
