B SCHOLARS' ASSEMBLY

TERM 1 WEEK 4 19 February 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Avondale College’s annual Scholars' Assembly was held on Monday, to honour those students whose academic achievements in 2019 were truly exceptional. Students who had achieved one (or more) of 38 NZ Scholarships, along with those who had achieved top results in New Zealand – and the world - in their Cambridge International exams were acknowledged at this assembly. Also recognised were the teachers of those students and their families. NZ Scholarship is New Zealand’s most demanding and prestigious secondary school academic qualification. Each year, approximately three per cent of students studying each subject at Level 3 are awarded NZ Scholarship, if they reach the standard that has been set. The rewards are financial, with students being able to win scholarships of up to $30,000. Congratulations to the students, teachers and parents who were honoured at Monday’s assembly. (For a list of Scholarship and CAIE awardees, please see page 4)

75TH JUBILEE [8-10 May 2020] SAVE THE DATE

Registrations opening soon

Each year students at Avondale College put themselves forward to sit the NZQA New Zealand Scholarship exams. These exams provide recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling, but can also be sat in Years 11 and 12. New Zealand Scholarship examinations enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are New Zealand’s most prestigious secondary school academic award. At Avondale College we provide support for some of our top students through their inclusion in the Scholars’ Academy. However, it should be noted that any student with the desire and ability to attempt the exams can indeed do so, and will be supported throughout the year with weekly tutorials in their choice of subject. When studying, preparing for and sitting the exams, Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high levels of critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Students, if you have a talent or strong interest in a subject area, then the Scholarship exams are for you, and you should speak to your teachers to find out more. Mrs L Watkinson Principal

ARA LODGE ART AWARD FOR AVCOL STUDENT Two Avondale College alumni attended the Ara Lodge Awards Evening on Friday 14 February, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the visual arts. Fraser Craill (who was in Year 13 last year) was awarded the Ara Lodge Award for being Avondale College's top Year 13 Art student in 2019 going on to further study in the Arts, and received $1250 towards his study costs. Speaking on behalf of all the past Ara Awards' scholars at the event was another former Avondale College student, Cindy Huang, who had received the award in 2016 and is now in her fourth year of studying architecture at Auckland University. Cindy has recently been involved in a summer research project looking at Chinese architecture in New Zealand and also travelled to Morocco with some of her fellow architectural students on a study trip. Both Cindy and Fraser were students of Avondale's Director of Art and Design, Ms Emma Watt, who also attended the event. "It was great to catch up with ex-students Fraser and Cindy and to hear how well Cindy is achieving in her architectural studies," said Ms Watt. "I would also like to thank Ara Lodge for their ongoing support of young artists in Auckland, in this, the 15th year of the award."

SPORTS REPORT Monday 10th February – Sunday 16th February

ATHLETICS

Our Athletics students continue to perform, with three athletes competing over the weekend in Hamilton, at the Porritt Classic. Results as follows: Lex Revell-Lewis: Open Men’s 400m (51.71s) Kimberley May: Open Women’s 1500m (4:35.78s) Joanna Poland: Open Women’s 1500m (4:42.79s) Well done also to Angelina Revell-Lewis, who was officiating at the event. She is one of just a few officials in New Zealand that know how to confidently set up and operate a laser and EDM measuring device – normally used for long throws. She was on both the Senior Men’s Discus and the Senior Men’s and Women’s Javelin.

Junior Boys A Cricket team

Congratulations to Year 10 student Blessing Sefo who yesterday was invited to join the Auckland Track and Field team heading to Christchurch in a couple of weeks. Blessing is in excellent form and will be competing in Shot Put, an event where he has the potential to podium as an U18 athlete, despite being just 14 years old. On 21 March, three Avondale College students will be heading across to Sydney to compete in the Australian Track and Field Nationals: Tremayne Redman-Gardner (representing New Zealand Secondary Schools) Lex Revell-Lewis (representing Auckland) Blessing Sefo (representing Auckland)

CRICKET

The 1st XI Girls had their first game of the season on Wednesday, taking on St Marys at home. Avondale were put into bat first and were down 2 wickets in the first 3 overs. This brought Roshni Oberoi and Shahana Samadi to the crease who played exceptionally well and remained not out until the end of the 20 overs scoring 66 and 64 runs each respectively. Avondale College set a massive target of 219 runs for St Marys to chase down; our highest score for the girls in over 5 seasons. The girls restricted St Marys to 122 runs, picking up 5 wickets along the way, and Avondale College won by 96 runs! Congratulations to both Roshni and Shahana for scoring their first ever half centuries! Our 1st XI Boys took on Sacred Heart on Saturday. After losing by 338 runs in their previous match against their opposition, Avondale were looking to bounce back. Batting first, Sacred Heart put up a score of 357/8. Maanav Chezzar was the pick of the Avondale bowlers, taking 4/75. In the run chase, Avondale struggled to get going, with Mihir Patil and Mohit Kandpal scoring 38 and 34 runs respectively. Ultimately, Sacred Heart were too strong, Avondale losing by 191 runs. Our Junior A Boys had their first game of the year, when they took on Selwyn College. The opposition batted first, with Avondale bowling them all out for just 122. Year 9 student Dhiren Vaidya made his debut and what a debut it was. In 5.4 overs of bowling, he took 6 wickets for just 25 runs, which included 1 maiden over. This was an incredible performance from Dhiren. In the second innings, Avondale chased down the target in 31 overs, resulting in an 8 wicket win. Another Year 9 student, Viraj Mody also made his debut for the school, scoring 54 runs. It was outstanding to see him get a half century in his first game in Avondale colours!

Holly Bliss

CYCLING

A busy summer for Avondale track cyclist Holly Bliss saw her compete at three major championships. Holly started the season with a solid performance riding for the Auckland team at the Oceania Championships in Invercargill. The Waikato and Auckland championships in December saw Holly take a fantastic gold and two bronze medals and set a new personal best for the Individual pursuit. These performances gained her selection for the Waikato team competing at The U19 and elites Track National champs at the end of January. Holly rode well against the best riders in New Zealand with the highlight coming in team pursuit as Holly’s team set the fastest U19 qualifying time to reach finals ride off. The team rode really well to set a faster time than their qualifying but unfortunately were pipped into second place by just two seconds.

TAUREWA CAMP

taurewa@avcol.school.nz Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight! Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa in Term 1 and Year 12's in Term 2. Taurewa Camp is an optional camp offered as a co-curricular activity and has a substantial overnight component. Therefore, it is permitted under the Ministry of Education donation scheme to request a contribution from parents to assist with covering the cost of camp. Students who do not participate will continue with their usual programme of learning at school. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
