B ACADEMIC HONOURS BADGES FOR RECORD NUMBER OF STUDENTS Avondale College's highly coveted Excellence and Distinction academic badges were awarded to a record number of students at the Honours Assembly held on Monday. One hundred and eighty five students were awarded Excellence badges for NCEA and Distinction badges for CAIE, based on their achievement in their assessments in 2019. Fifty-eight students received NCEA Excellence badges for their Level One endorsements last year, and 40 in Level Two. Sixty students were awarded CAIE Distinction badges based on the average of their top three Cambridge examinations in IGCSE, and 27 in AS. (See page 4 for students' names.) Academic badges recognising Merit endorsement and achievement in NCEA and Credit and achievement grades in Cambridge will be distributed to students in their Homeroom classes this week. It gave me great pleasure to see so many students, parents, staff and helpers at school over the weekend. For many of our Polyfest groups, practices have got serious, with the event now less than three weeks away. Keep doing what you are doing – your commitment and drive for excellence will be essential over the next few weeks. There were also a number of sports teams here on Saturday, with very strong performances from our cricketers again, building on some great results from the girls mid-week. At Monday's assembly we recognised the achievements of our scholars who were awarded NCEA Excellence or CAIE Distinction badges. 18 - 21 MARCH As the performance dates for our Polyfest cultural groups grows closer, students and tutors are hard at work preparing their items for the festival. Avondale College will be represented by 17 different groups this year - the most ever - with five on the cultural stages, and 12 on the Diversity Stage. Joining our Diversity groups for the first time ever this year is our Vietnamese Group, who are made up of international students - some of whom have only been in New Zealand for a few weeks but they are excited to be representing Avondale College at this iconic cultural festival! Our Avondale College community is warmly invited to support our groups at their evening dress rehearsal performances in the PAC from Monday to Wednesday 18 March, and at Polyfest itself from 19-21 March.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 24th February – Sunday 1st March
ATHLETICS On Thursday 27th February, over 100 Avondale College students travelled to Mt Smart Stadium, having qualified for the competitive Avondale College Athletics Championships. Athletes were attempting to hit qualifying marks for the upcoming Central Western Zone Athletics Day, and we had a large number of students qualify. There were many stand out performances on the day, in particular Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u, who qualified for almost every event she attempted, as well as a sub 11 second 100m sprint from Tex Beattie. Congratulations to all the athletes who qualified and a big thank you to all the staff that helped out on the day. We look forward to seeing some outstanding performances next week at the Central Western Zones Competition.
CRICKET The 1st XI Girls were looking to back up last week’s outstanding performance when they took on a mixed Rangitoto and Long Bay team. Bowling first, Avondale put on a great performance, bowling really well, supported by some great fielding from the team. We held the opposition to 55/8. This was easily chased down by Avondale, reaching 56/1 in the 9th over, taking the 7 wicket win. It was another impressive win for our Junior A Boys, defeating Kingsway/Mahu by 8 wickets on Saturday. Well done to Ryan Smardon who bowled 3/36 then scored 79 runs with the bat, helping to seal the win for Avondale. Our Junior B Boys went down by a small margin to Mt Albert Grammar on the weekend. Avondale batted first and got 128/5. Mt Albert were able to chase down the target, scoring 132/3. The 1st XI Boys played well against Macleans on Saturday, but went down by 3 wickets. Batting first, Avondale posted a score of 147, thanks to a half century from Kishan Patel. Mohanshu Vaidya was the pick of the bowlers for Avondale taking 3/52, but it wasn’t enough, as Macleans chased down the total in 35 overs.
SWIMMING We had a number of Avondale College students competing at the Anthony Mosse Swimming Classic which was recently held at West Wave. TENNIS It has been a very successful start to the season for our Senior Girls’ tennis team. Their first match was against Marist, which was played here at Avondale on Friday after school. The girls eased past the visitors, coming out on top 8-1 to kickstart their season. A quick turnaround saw them take on Rutherford on Saturday morning; another 8-1 win for the girls. Well done on an impressive first two games, girls!
VOLLEYBALL Our Senior Girls Volleyball team continued their top form on Thursday, winning both their games to make it 4 wins from 4 games so far. In their first game, the girls took on Onehunga, winning 25-12, 25-18. The second game started with a highly competitive first set going Avondale’s way 26-24, before a 25-16 second set win made it 2-0. The Premier Boys have their final round of their competition this Friday, playing off for 7th after losing to Westlake Boys (3-0) and Manurewa (3-0) last week. Their seeding for Auckland Championships will rely on their results this Friday, so good luck to the boys!

TAUREWA CAMP
taurewa@avcol.school.nz Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight! Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa in Term 1 and Year 12's in Term 2. Taurewa Camp is an optional camp offered as a co-curricular activity and has a substantial overnight component. Therefore, it is permitted under the Ministry of Education donation scheme to request a contribution from parents to assist with covering the cost of camp. Students who do not participate will continue with their usual programme of learning at school. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! • Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course, Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors) and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
