TERM 1 WEEK 8 20 March 2020

POLYFEST GROUP FROM THE PRINCIPAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCES Our 15 cultural groups gave it their all in performances to the Year 9 assemblies on Monday and Tuesday this week, highlighting once again the commitment and tenacity of a huge number of people - students, staff, tutors and families - who have worked so hard over recent weeks in preparation for Polyfest. It was with great sadness that we received the news that ASB Polyfest, which was to be held this week, was cancelled. Subsequently, the Fiafia nights at Avondale College on Tuesday and Wednesday were also unable to take place. While this was a huge disappointment to all involved, the quality of our students once again shone through as they made the most of the assembly performances to the Year 9s. The performances were then recorded on Thursday and Friday and these performances will be shared online with our families and community in the weeks to come. (See page 3 for more photos!)

75TH JUBILEE CANCELLED Avondale College regrets to advise that given the implications of the current coronavirus pandemic, we have made the decision to cancel the 75th Jubilee celebrations planned for the weekend of 8-10 May this year.

Dear Parents and Caregivers Thank you very much for your prompt response in returning the updated contact information sheet for your family that was sent home this week. If you have not yet provided that information, please ask your child to get the relevant documents from their Home Room teacher. Alternatively, please email any changes to contact details directly to datateam@ avcol.school.nz I wish to share with you some updated information that we have received over the past few days from the Ministry of Education. I also wish to communicate some of the decisions we have made in terms of school operations in light of that advice. • We will not be holding regular school assemblies • We will continue to communicate with families through email, our website and letters which are available at reception. • There will not be any school trips for the remainder of this term, including camps to Taurewa. • In line with decisions by NZ School Sport, College Sport and many sporting bodies, we are stopping sports team trials and trainings. • We are restricting guests and guest speakers coming into school. • We are doing planning to make sure that we can support students' learning at home should it be necessary. • We continue to support the restrictions that the government has put in place around travel and selfisolation. We know COVID-19 feels worrying, and of course people are concerned for the wellbeing of children. Please be assured that with no case confirmed in our school, your children are safe here. Good hygiene is a priority at our school, and we are reinforcing this regularly with all students and staff. We continue to work closely with our cleaning contractors and property team to support this. We are getting the most up to date advice and guidance so that we can confidently make informed decisions about the safety and wellbeing of our school community. We will continue to review our decisions and actions daily. I wish you all a safe and happy weekend with your families. Mrs L Watkinson Principal

This week Avondale College congratulates Emily Smith in 13ELS on her achievement in earning a Silver Award in the New Zealand International Biology Olympiad. Following on from her participation in the online summer tutorial programme as a Bronze award recipient in the NZIBO, Emily sat the national team selection examination earlier this month competing against 250 other students from across New Zealand for a spot in the NZIBO Selection and Training Camp. The examination highlighted the research of innovative and world leading scientists and tested Emily's ability to correctly answer questions related to Stage 1 university level Biology. Her Silver award is accompanied by an invitation to attend the annual Selection and Training Camp along side the top 25 high school biologists in the country. The camp usually takes place in the April school holidays in collaboration with the University of Auckland, the University of Otago and Massey University in Albany and provides a face to face opportunity for students to connect to current science investigations and learn hands-on biological research laboratory skills and techniques. We are so proud of Emily and wish her all the best in her bid to be one of the top four students who will win an NZIBO Gold award and go on to represent New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad in Nagasaki, Japan in July!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 9th March – Sunday 15th March

Junior B Cricket Team

CRICKET

The 1st XI Boys made it two in a row, defeating Selwyn College by 2 wickets on Saturday. Abhishek Lal once again proved his value with bowling stats of 3/24, while finishing off the run chase with a quick 15 off 14 balls. The boys will take on Western Springs here at Avondale on Saturday in their final match of the season. The winner will survive the grade whilst the losing team will be relegated to 1B next season. The boys would love some support this weekend, so be sure to get on down for a 10:30 start! The 1st XI Girls continue to dominate their grade, this time beating Rangitoto College by 95 runs. Hem Shah and Lourdes D’souza took their first wickets for Avondale College, whilst Hetanshi took 3 wickets to help bowl Rangitoto out for just 60 runs. Our Junior A Boys were defeated for the first time this season, losing to Kristin by 17 runs. Fin Perry top scored with 78 not out, a great performance by him. Viraj Mody was close to a half century, but was caught and bowled at 46. It was the Junior B Boys’ first win of the season on Saturday. The boys edged out Westlake by 8 runs. Hemish Parikh top scored with 23, whilst Jash Solanki had a great day bowling, securing 3 wickets for just 16 runs.

ROWING

Well done to Senior Rowers Maceo Tremlett and Leo Strode-Penny for finishing 7th at the North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta, which were held at Lake Karapiro over the weekend.

SWIMMING

In recent open water swimming events, our two swimmers Alex Dunkley and Jayden Collins achieved some great results. Alex got 1st place in the 3km swim at the Big Tahuna Nelson Swim. He was also 1st overall in the Red Beach Surf Club’s event, winning the Deyal Cosgrave Shield. Jayden came 1st in the under 15 year’s grade at the Samoa Events – Beach Maraetai Swim. Well done to Alex and Jayden on these awesome results.

TENNIS

Yet another win on Saturday for our Senior Girls. This time, Rutherford were defeated 9-0. Heading into the final round before playoffs, the girls sit 3 points clear at the top of the table, and remain the only undefeated team in the competition.

VOLLEYBALL

Our two Senior Volleyball teams had their Auckland Championships this week. Our Premier Boys were up against some quality opposition, but fought hard and came away 13th overall. The Senior Girls also did very well, placing 22nd out of nearly 50 Auckland schools. Well done to all our Volleyball players, coaches and volunteers for a great season.

WATER POLO

Our Senior Mixed team were in action again on Sunday, when they took on Orewa. Coming into the game, Orewa were top of the table and yet to lose a game, but our players were outstanding and came away with an 8-5 win. This has set up a 3/4th place playoff match on Friday against Kristin, a team that defeated us by 4 goals earlier in the season. Good luck to the team!
