PASIFIKA LEADERS' DINNER Pasifika community leaders, students, families and staff gathered in our Avondale College library yesterday for an evening of food, connection and conversation centred around celebrating and supporting the further success of our Pasifika students. A number of our student leaders addressed the gathering, speaking eloquently about the challenges of balancing the commitments of school, home and church, and this was followed by a valuable time of discussion. We look forward to connecting further with our Pasfika community in future talanoaga gatherings.

PROGRESS REPORTS & SENIOR SUBJECT REPORT EVENING Tuesday 24 September Progress reports for all our senior students will be posted to families in the next few days. Please remember that copies of student reports are available when you log into Family Connection and click on ‘Documents’ under the Student Information tab.

Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 24 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child.

The online booking facility for this evening will be available on Family Connection from Wednesday evening 11 September until Sunday 22 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

TTCF SCHOLARSHIPS Thirty-nine $2000 scholarships are available to Year 12 or 13 Avondale College students who are intending to study a tertiary course next year at degree level or NZQA Level 4 or above. Our thanks to The Trusts Community Foundation for their generous support of our students.

The funds can be used towards course fees, a portable computer and associated software, accommodation (room only), textbooks or essential equipment.

Applicants must be permanent residents, have academic or technical ability and have contributed to school or community.

Application forms can be downloaded from the intranet under Careers, Scholarships and Finance or picked up from Careers.

Applications are due by 3:30pm Tuesday September 17.

YOUNG REPORTERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT For the second year in a row, Avondale College student photographers have received recognition for their entries in the nationwide Young Reporters for the Environment Litter Less Competition, gaining a third place and three Honourable Mentions!

Jessica Chen has won third place in the 15-18 years category for her photo entitled "Intoxicated Actions". The judges said it was a clever picture with a thoughtful caption, and noted the difficulty of getting the pukeko to look the right way and in the right position while still having the focus on the beer bottle.

In addition to a prize pack valued at over $160, Jessica has also received an invitation to the YRE Winners Workshop to be held at the University of Auckland in November.

Malisha Munidasa and the duo of Alice Yu and Christine Yu received Honourable Mentions for their photographs and are also invited to attend the YRE Winners Workshop.

SCHOLARS' ACADEMY On Tuesday, our Scholars' Academy met for their final session. Over the last two terms, our Scholars have enjoyed a range of cross-curricular presentations on such topics as Critical Thinking, the Theory of Knowledge, Source Criticism and the Power of Calculus.

Each presentation has sought to provide skills that Scholarship candidates in any subject can use to enhance their responses in the final exam. The presentations are designed to supplement the many subject-specific tutorials that are run at department level. [ The members of this year's Scholars' Academy have been an enthusiastic, wellinformed and committed group of young people and we wish them well in the final Scholarship examinations in Term 4.

SPORTS REPORT – WINTER TOURNAMENT WEEK Monday 2nd September – 8th September

This week, we had over 180 students compete around New Zealand as part of Winter Tournament Week. Avondale College were competing in 11 different sports, with some great results coming in.

BADMINTON

We had some great success with our badminton teams, competing in Wellington. Our girls team of Misha Lingampalli, Emilie Imai, Lina Imai, Qi Ling Ng and Yee Xuan Ng, were competing in the Division 1 competition. Throughout the tournament, they defeated Wellington East, Palmerston North, and Bayfield, to place 5th in New Zealand.

This is a fantastic achievement by the girls.

Our boys team competed in Division 2 of the national competition, and picked up some outstanding wins against Hutt Valley, Hastings Boys and Scots College on their way to 7th place. Well done to Brendan Choong, Wyatt Siow, Isaac Wan, Zubin Roy and Chi Lam Ng.

Our Junior Boys basketball team had a very successful tournament, finishing 3rd in the Junior Zone 1 Premierships held at Pulman Arena.

They had some fantastic wins, notably against Westlake Boys, Howick and Kristin.

It was a tough week for our Senior Boys, who finished 21st overall in the AA Premierships, despite some wins against Kings, Selwyn and Sancta Maria.

Holly Bliss competed on the Northern Tour as part of NZSS Tournament Week. Holly got some outstanding results. She came 11th in the Individual Time Trial, 5th in the Hill Climb and 6th in the Criterium, which helped her to come 7th overall for the U17 Girls.

FOOTBALL

The 1st XI Girls travelled to Rotorua to compete in the Maurice Hulme Football Tournament. The girls kicked off their campaign with 4 wins on the trot, including a 7-3 demolition of cross-town rivals Rutherford College. They then went down to Sacred Heart Hamilton, and drew with Paraparaumu to just miss out on the quarterfinals on goal difference in a very competitive pool. This did not get the girls down, as they breezed past Kerikeri and Orewa to finish 10th place overall.

Our Junior Boys hit the road to Tauranga and competed in the Hillsdene Junior Football Tournament. The boys had a rough start with 2 losses in a row, however hit back and finished the tournament on a 6 game win streak to finish 9th overall. A tough placing for the team after doing so well.

It was a tough few days down in Taupo for our 1st XI Boys, who finished 21st in the Rex Dawkins Tournament.

HOCKEY

It was a road trip up to Whangarei for our 1st XI Boys, who competed in the Mayhill Cup. Coming off the back of finishing 2nd place in the Supercity A1 competition, the boys had high expectations. Two great wins to start the campaign, against Rosehill and Otumoetai had them in great shape heading into the quarterfinals, despite a loss to eventual champions Rangitoto. They took on St Peter’s in an Auckland derby. We scored first, however St Peter’s hit back straight after, and that’s how the game ended. On to penalties it went, and the boys came up just short, losing 3-2. They then played off for 7th/8th against Takapuna Grammar, and came away with a 3-0 win to finish 7th.

The 1st XI Girls didn’t have far to travel, and competed on the North Shore of Auckland in the Chica Gilmer Trophy. It was a tough tournament for the girls, however, they had some good wins against Botany Downs and Mt Albert Grammar, to finish the tournament in 15th place.

NETBALL

Our Premier team went into UNISS as the 29th seed in Division 1, after finishing as runners up in Division 2 last year. A tough start, losing to St Kentigern 53-38. The girls then bounced back with wins over Morrinsville and Matamata. They then went down to One Tree Hill, which meant the girls had to win their next three games, and they did just that; firstly, knocking off Mt Albert Grammar, then edging out Hamilton Girls, before beating Westlake Girls by one point. This set them up for a semi-final against St Kentigern, and the girls went down 43-32, and finished 4th in the tournament. Considering Avondale went into the tournament as the 29th seed, this is an outstanding achievement, and the girls will travel to Nelson in 3 weeks to compete in the national tournament.

ORIENTEERING

Liam Stolberger had a 12th place finish at the NZSS Championships.

Liam has had an outstanding year full of great results in orienteering; great stuff Liam.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Avondale College went down to Wellington with a team of 7 lifters to compete in the NZSS Tournament. We managed to come away with three medals, including one gold. Sian Hancy took home the gold in the 71kg U15 grade, whilst Sophia Howsam and Gebremedhin Nigussie both picked up bronze medals in their classes. Well done to all our lifters on a successful tournament.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

30 YEARS SERVICE! Today marks a special anniversary for staff member Linda Bradfield; it is thirty years since she began working at Avondale College! Linda is a familiar face to our school community from her desk at the Attendance Station. What might not be so obvious is the behind-the-scenes support she gives to the wider staff through her role in administration support and management of the staffroom.

We would like to honour and thank Linda for her many years' service; she is an integral part of our Avondale College family.

TAUREWA CAMP Trip Information We encourage families to make early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately six weeks before departure.

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips!

A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
