B SAFE SCHOOL LEADERS On Monday our Safe School Leaders were introduced to our student body at the whole school assemblies. These students were chosen by Deans, homeroom teachers and the counsellors to work together with the goal of creating and providing a safe school environment for all the students at Avondale College. Their first task was to announce the following day's Mufti Day, which was held in connection with international Pink Shirt Day, and raised funds for the Mental Health Foundation.

Two classes of Year 10 Drama students put their artistic skills to the test on Thursday as they created a variety of wounds and special effects for their make up assessment. Using tools such as paint, tissue paper and pva glue, students were able to create some very grisly looking wounds - which they greatly enjoyed showing their classmates and teachers in the afternoon!

BLACK GRACE DANCE TRIP On Wednesday a Level 3 Dance and a Level 1 Dance class travelled to the Playhouse Theatre in Glen Eden to see the internationally acclaimed Black Grace Dance Company perform their New Zealand touring work "20for20". The compilation of short works was 60 minutes long, followed by a Q&A session. Senior leaders David Tuitama and Ashley Elia were able to ask direct questions of the company members about the meaning behind one of the short works and find out more about the inspiration behind the overall idea of "20for20", which was a choreographic response to the Christchurch shootings and explored ideas of feeling isolated, being alone and survival. The students appreciated the opportunity to hear professional dancers talk about their profession and their love for dance. The trip was particularly inspiring for our male Pasifika students, due to the fact that Black Grace originally started as an all-male Māori and Pasifika dance company back in 1995 and was New Zealand's only male dance company until 2000 when women were introduced.
OED ROCKCLIMBING TRIP An excursion to a rock climbing wall saw ten of our senior Outdoor Education students challenge themselves on Tuesday as they put into practice their abseiling and climbing techniques.
DR DRAYTON WINS OCKHAM NZ BOOK AWARD Congratulations to best-selling writer (and Avcol English teacher!) Dr Joanne Drayton, whose biography, Hudson & Halls: The Food of Love has won the Royal Society Te Apārangi Award for General Non-Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards on Tuesday 14 May! The category’s judges described it as a “generous, multi-layered, and touching account of companionship and enduring love.”

HOSPITALITY STUDENTS GAIN UNIT STANDARDS AT MIT On Monday our Year 13 Hospitality class travelled to MIT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism to complete two Unit Standards: US 13314 Prepare and cook egg dishes in a commercial kitchen and US 13316 Prepare and cook basic pasta dishes in a commercial kitchen. The students had to prepare four dishes: a breakfast wrap, rolled omelette, creamy carbonara with poached egg and potato gnocchi and tomato bake. The students were initially a bit daunted at the new and different kitchen but worked well to successfully complete the dishes to an excellent standard. The chef that was marking them commended our students for their calm and methodical approach to their tasks and noted how well they worked together as a team.
Avondale College's Spoken Word Group participated in the Word the Front Line Regional Auditions in the weekend. They performed their carefully crafted slam poetry to an eager crowd on Saturday the 11 May at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre. Avcol entered two teams into the competition. Both teams competed strongly against many other Central and West Auckland schools for a place in the finals. The group had been writing and crafting their poetry since Term 2. This is the second time students from Avcol have participated in this competition. Their poetry was received very well by the audience and judges alike. The finalists will be announced on the 20 May on the Word the Frontline Facebook page.

Senior A Girls: The Senior Girls Basketball team played St Kentigern College on Friday. The team came out firing, starting the first quarter with a 18-3 lead. A number of careless turnovers cut the lead back down to four points at the end of the half. With St Kentigern’s gaining momentum, the team were battling for points in the fourth, but came up short, losing 68-59. This was an unfortunate end after a great start. Special mention goes out to Maraea Whiu who scored a whooping 44 points. Outstanding job! Senior A Boys: The Premier Boys Basketball team had a solid game against Massey High School last week. Both teams started the game fiercely fighting, with the game being a two point contention: 23-25 to Massey at the end of the first quarter. Avondale College then kicked it into the next gear, scoring an outstanding 38 points to 15 points and gaining a 21 point lead. With a large margin for Massey to catch up and our boys continuing to be consistent, we ended the game winning 112 - 69. This was an awesome team effort by all the boys. A stand out effort was given by Tauhir Toyer and Jack Childs who both top scored with 35 points each. Junior Girls: On Thursday afternoon our Junior Premier Girls Basketball team had their first game of the season. Playing a tough Massey side, the girls had trouble stopping the constant attack and rebounding of the opposition. The team went down 51-27, but there was some outstanding play by Daisy Ducloux, our point guard. She played most of the game and was awesome handling the ball and attacking the basket, scoring many of our points. Adriyel Latu also had a good game, creating offensive opportunities for herself. With a lot more practice and game play the girls will gain the necessary experience needed to play the game and execute on both ends of the floor. U17A Boys: Started off their season with a great win against Rutherford, 40-34. U17B Boys: Battled back from 20 points down but fell just short against MAGS, going down 34-30.

A swift start from Glendowie caught our defence off-guard and we found ourselves 0-1 down with a strange goal that was slow but accurate. The boys remained calm in the knowledge that we were certainly the stronger team. Japreet Kullar, confident as always, took the ball right to Anoosh Kulkardi, Hersh Patel and Abhishek Lal a number of times, but even after a couple of PCs, still we remained frustrated. Some clever footwork from Rahul Naickar at left back delivered an outstanding ball to Alex Stenberg, whose natural balance and speed picked up Rahul’s long ball with just the goalie to beat. It was a doddle for Alex in the clear. Now 1-1 with ten minutes to go, the nail-biter continued to give coach and manager more grey hairs. Our forwards shifted up a gear with some relentless attacking but with a minute to go, we were wondering on the sideline how a draw might affect the points table. Tenacity and a never-say-die attitude saw the ball being freed again to Alex, whose composure under pressure was impressive. With our hearts in our mouths, Alex dragged the goalie right and pushed the ball in simply for a 2-1 win with five seconds left on the clock. What an exciting end to get us out of jail - and a great team effort! 2nd XI Boys: Dominated from start to finish against Western Springs on Wednesday night, coming out winners 8-1.

Boys A: Started off their season with a solid 4-2 victory over Mt Albert B on Monday night. Girls C: Went down 3-2 to St Cuthbert’s in their first game of the season. Boys B: Defeated Mt Albert Grammar 4-2. Girls A: Edged out Kings College on Friday night. With the game finishing 3-3, the girls prevailed on points, 105-87.

1st XI Girls: Went down to Howick College, 5-1 on Thursday night. Junior Girls: Our Junior Girls started their season off with a win on Wednesday night, outclassing Onehunga 5-0. 1st XI Boys: Glendowie College was a bit of an unknown quantity for us heading into this game. With most of the possession held by us throughout the game, we discovered that not only was their goalie strong, but their defence was also rock solid. Time after time we hammered them in the circle without success. Our midfield fed our forwards very nicely every time, with Paul Hunt, Lewis Rose and

Year 10 Black: Defeated Henderson 21-16. Player of the Day went to Charlize Cleere. Year 10 White: Edged out Massey by one point, coming away with a 20-19 win. Player of the Day was May Taito. Year 10 Grey: Went down to St Dominics, 17-13, with Alexis Young-Aso winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Put in a strong performance, beating Rutherford 28-14. Player of the Day went to Ellis Gall. Year 9 Black: Narrowly defeated Lynfield 20-18, with Delaynee Esterich-Tai taking Player of the Day. Year 9 Grey: Dominated their game against Lynfield, coming away with a 16-1 win. Special mention to Ciara Onions who was Player of the Day. Year 9 White: Came up just short against Massey, losing 22-18. The whole team was recognised for showing the HEART values in the face of tough opposition and injuries within the team, for not giving up and for persevering!

1st XI Boys: The boys were looking to add to last week’s victory when they took on Takapuna Grammar on Friday night. Down 2-1 just after half time, the boys switched it up a gear and prevailed 3-2 in a great show of determination and fight. They play again on Saturday against Rangitoto College, away, at 12:00pm. Junior Girls: Came up short 2-0 against Mt Albert Grammar in their first game of the season. Junior Boys: Started off their season with a 1-0 victory over Western Springs. 3rd XI Boys: Emphatically defeated Mt Albert Grammar, 9-0, in a great display on Saturday morning.

Girls B: Had a tough start to the season, coming up against St Mary’s A team and going down 19-1 on Thursday.
NETBALL
Premier 1: The Premier Girls came up short against Rutherford, 24-23, in a tight match. Premier 2: Our Premier 2 Netball team had two strong wins on Tuesday night, firstly defeating Waitakere College 21-17, before beating Kelston 27-12. Senior Black: Defeated Western Springs 21-20, with Monique Compain taking Player of the Day. They then went on to play our Senior Grey team, and came away with a 28-7 win. Player of the Day for that game went to Danielle Kimiora.
1st XV: The boys had their first round of the season against Rosehill College on Saturday. Kick-off began in fine conditions, with Avondale getting out to an early lead through a penalty goal from Isimase Tavae. Rosehill scored the first try of the game which was quickly responded to with a try to Avondale by Tafia Tofa, who dived on an attacking kick. Both teams shared penalty goals, with Avondale taking a slim lead into half time, 13-8. Rosehill came out strongly in the second half, scoring the first two tries and taking a 13-20 lead. Ola Hoeft jumped on a loose ball inside the 22, making a long run before linking up with Tafia Tofa who ran away for his second try, closing the gap to 18-20. Avondale ran out of time to score further points, taking the bonus point for the close loss. The next game for the team is away against a strong Alfriston College side. 2nd XV: Started their season in the best possible way, shutting out Waitakere College 25-0. Well done to these boys for putting in such a good performance so early in the season. U15: Went hard from the get go and never looked back, comprehensively defeating Pacific Advance, 50-5. Many of these boys are new to the team, so it’s great to see the team gelling already. U60kg: Travelled down to Waiuku to take on Waiuku College in their opening game of the season. The boys kept it close, but ultimately came up short, going down 36-24.

On Friday night, the secondary schools Table Tennis Championships began at the Waitemata Table Tennis Stadium. Avondale College has eight teams competing this year, which is awesome to see. Avondale 1: Convincingly defeated Rutherford 11-0. Avondale 2: Beat Rutherford 7-4. Avondale 3: Edged out Liston 6-5. Avondale 4: Also won 6-5, against Kelston. Avondale 5: Dominated Sunderland 9-2. Avondale 6: Went down to Rutherford 1-8. Avondale 7: Won 6-5 against Sunderland. Avondale 8: Beat Rutherford 6-5.

Avondale College invites nominations for the election of parent representatives to their Board of Trustees. A nomination form and a notice calling for nominations have been posted to all eligible voters. Additional nomination forms can be obtained from the School Office. The voting roll is open for inspection at the school and can be viewed during normal school hours. There will also be a list of candidates’ names, as they come to hand, for inspection at the school. TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up! TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
