SHOW CAMP The senior cast of the school show headed up to Peter Snell Youth Village in Whangaparaoa on Wednesday last week, for an intensive three days of rehearsing. The group showed great HEART values and were extremely focused as they began learning songs and choreography for the show. This year’s show is In the Heights, which is set in Washington Heights and focuses on the lives of the residents there. The show is set to be in full swing by Week 9 of Term 3. INTERMEDIATE MUSIC CONCERTS Tuesday marked the third performance in recent weeks by some of our music students to local intermediate schools. Our groups have visited Avondale, Rangeview and Blockhouse Bay Intermediate schools, performing a variety of music including jazz, soul and classical. As well as being a superb showcase of the musical opportunities on offer at Avondale College, we have also been able to let prospective students know about our upcoming Open Evening on 31 July.

MUSICIANS PREPARE FOR ASPIRE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
SPAIN TRIP Twenty students and three staff are currently making the most of the warm temperatures and amazing Spanish culture as part of Avondale College's trip to Spain. We are looking forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return next week!
Forty-seven Avondale College students and staff will be taking part in the Aspire International Music Festival in Australia during the holidays. This world renowned youth music festival aims to foster a culture of musical excellence and international connectedness, raising the aspirations of all students who take part. Avondale's Symphony Orchestra, Big Band and the Premiere String Ensemble will all be travelling to this festival, where they will perform and compete with many other schools from Australia and New Zealand. We wish them well!

MAHI TAHI MENTORING The Mahi Tahi Mentoring Programme for Year 12 and 13 students had its last session on 2 July, in the school Whare. Organised by our school Careers Department, with AUT, the six week after school programme worked on developing a key range of personal skills needed for success in tertiary study. The programme included sessions on communication and goal setting and equipped the students with knowledge about study options and how to apply for scholarships. 4

11OED SEA KAYAKING
DANCE LIFE UNITE
The 11OED students had a stunning day out on the water in Auckland's harbour for their second sea kayak trip. The students went for a long paddle over to North Head and learnt how to keep themselves safe on the water. They made the most of the calm conditions and managed to fit in a sprint kayak for their practical assessment. Some students even went in the water for a midwinter dip!
Twelve dance studios took part in the Dance Life Unite competition last weekend, with a number of Avondale College dancers involved in this event. Ella Nipper, Milly Innes, Caitlin Dunford and Winifer Peteli (pictured), as well as junior students Chloe Chiu and Tilde Wilson, competed for the west Auckland based Notorious group at this competition. These girls are a part of a varsity group called Intrepid who came first and were named Regional Champions with the overall highest score in their division. They were also a part of Notorious's Mega Crew who came second and won the Most Entertaining award. Congratulations also to Tilde, who came first in her solo competition.
YOUTH PARLIAMENT Every three years, about 140 young New Zealanders experience Parliament as Youth MPs and Youth Press Gallery members. Heading to Wellington in the holidays to take part of this programme for 2019 are two Avondale College students, Nishita Ganatra and Dazhonavah Faaumu. The Youth Parliament programme provides an opportunity for young people to actively work on topics and issues they are passionate about. As part of the two day event, Nishita, who is representing MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, will be speaking on Youth Crime in the general debate session. Dazhonavah (who will represent MP Carmel Sepuloni) says he is looking forward for the opportunity to represent his community. "For me, it's about youth involvement," he says. "That young people are not interested in politics is a myth. Sometimes they’re just too shy to express their thoughts openly, which is why I’m proud to represent them in Youth Parliament 2019."
ALUMNI Some great ex-Avondale College talent is coming together in the production of Once, The Musicial, which is currently running at the ASB Waterfront Theatre from 27 June to 14 July. Singer/songwriter Lisa Crawley has the lead in the show, which is being directed by Jesse Peach, through his Peach Theatre Company. Read more about this here:

Girls A Badminton: Lost to Auckland Grammar 4-2. Girls B Badminton: Defeated ACG Parnell 4-2. Boys A Badminton: Had a good 3-0 win against ACG Parnell. Boys B Badminton: Went down 5-1 to Kings. Boys C Badminton: Couldn’t be separated with opposition Mt Albert Grammar, sharing a 3-3 draw.

Senior A Girls Basketball: Had an awesome win on Friday night. The girls defeated Pakuranga 56-25. Senior A Boys Basketball: Lost to Pakuranga 84-74. Junior A Boys Basketball: Defeated Waitakere College on Wednesday, winning 49-42. The boys now play in the Championship Plate competition, which they have a great chance of winning. Junior B Boys Basketball: Lost 49-9 to Mt Albert Grammar. U17B Boys Basketball: Had a narrow win against Waitakere, 26-23.

2nd XI Girls Football: Continue to make their way up the standings after beating Rutherford, 2-0 on Wednesday. Junior Girls Football: Came up against Rangitoto College in the first of the playoff games for their grade. The girls played well but went down 2-1 in a close game. 1st XI Boys Football: Lost to Glendowie 1-0 on Friday night. Junior Boys Football: Defeated Rutherford 4-3 on Saturday. Year 10 Boys Football: Had an awesome win over the weekend, upsetting top-of-the-table Mission Heights 2-1, who were previously undefeated. Year 9 Boys Football: Lost 3-0 to Auckland Grammar. 3rd XI Boys Football: Faced off with Liston College and came away with a 3-2 win.

HOCKEY
The 1st XI Boys Hockey team had an outstanding game on Wednesday, defeating Takapuna Grammar 6-1 in the Hockey Supercity competition.
Having missed out on Supercity Premier competition in our promotion match (going down 1-3 to Pakuranga College in the pouring rain), our first outing in the Supercity A1 grade was against Mount Albert Grammar last week. A tough encounter saw us go down again, also 1-3, but the boys felt they could have won that one, had they gelled better as a team. The game against Takapuna Grammar started with some back and forth before Lewis Rose fed Alex Stenberg a simple forehand pass to secure a simple forehand goal, having opened up their defence nicely. Rahul Naickar showed good defensive skills before Ritesh Hanmenthu saved two in quick succession of the pads. Japreet Kullar playing a thinking game, linked up well with Shoma Hirota in the middle and Hersh Patel breaking at lightning speed down the right. Alex’s reverse shot came straight back; he then dribbled around and down baseline alley with a short push back up to Lewis, making his gap and scoring again. These two are lethal when they get together, making it 2-0 up. Anoosh Kulkarni, on the receiving end of a high ball exquisitely placed by Japreet, just went wide on reverse angle. Paul Hunt attacking left side linked up cleverly with Anoosh, who got the goal. 3-0 at halftime. A bad start to the second half saw a big hit saved by

Ritesh only to be deflected in, off his pads, to an opposition stick; 3-1. A fantastic feed from Abhishek Lal to Alex, who took his time with the keeper to outsmart him and take us 4-1 up. More goals, with Alex showing his style in a traditional trap then a strong hit in for 5-1. Daniel Parkinson, courageous in defence, got a ball to the knee, followed by three immense saves from Ritesh and a final goal from Lewis for a 6-1 win and celebratory burger and chips; thanks, Miss Norman. 2nd XI Boys Hockey: Put in a strong performance against Auckland Grammar on Wednesday night, winning 5-2. Lex Revell-Lewis scored four goals, and Dipan Patel scored one. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Proved too strong for Epsom Girls, winning 2-0 on Thursday. This bumps them up to 4th on the table. Junior Girls Hockey: A slight delay this week to the scheduled game as Onehunga High School battled minivan issues making their way to the Avondale turf. Leaping from their van, the game got underway pretty swiftly from there. The first half showcased the incredible defensive line of the Onehunga team. Avondale threw repeated attacks at their goal, however, their strength was definitely felt on their defensive side - like trying to break through a brick wall. This was incredible in itself as they had no goalie and no subs to call on. Half-time saw the score board empty: 0-0. In the second half Onehunga came out swinging, with repeated attacks on Avondale. Urvi Patel did an amazing job on the back line, defending consistently and fearlessly, meeting their attacks with her speed and determination. A quick 16 by Urvi saw a run-away goal set up by Tiana Leauga and tapped gently into the goal by Moe Hirota inside the circle. It was text-book perfection and really highlighted the way the team are gelling and controlling the ball to their advantage. Avondale was on the score board: 1-0. The play grew more intense, with Onehunga never giving in, but our Avondale girls are tough as nails! The physicality of the game increased as the game neared the final whistle, with both Veera Patel and Tiana feeling the full force of the attacks. It became a game of determination, and at this point we saw a second goal to Avondale from some skilful passing between Amelia Hurrell, Moe and Tiana, setting it up for Angelina Revell-Lewis to place the ball in the back of the goal. Onehunga were relentless, and when a penalty corner was awarded to them, they took the opportunity to use their strongest striker to try to break through our defensive line - however, the powerful strike from the penalty corner was stopped dead in its tracks by Seolina Cho. The full-time whistle blew: 2-0 to Avondale. Player of the Day was awarded to Urvi. Special mention to Onehunga High School team who proved to be a forceful opponent throughout the game, despite starting on the back foot with van delays, no goalie and no subs. They showed impeccable sportsmanship and fair play.
Year 9 Black Netball: Beat Rutherford 30-23. Skylah Hindman won Player of the Day. Year 9 White Netball: Defeated Waitakere 16-7 on Saturday. Year 9 Grey: Had a close loss to Western Springs, 18-12. Year 10 Black: Came up against our Year 10 White team and came away with the win, 31-15. Xila Kumar (Black) and Emily Langlois (White) won Player of the Day for their teams. Year 10 Grey: Had a strong win on Saturday, beating Green Bay 36-23. Chana Malungahu was the Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Had a loss on Saturday, beaten by Henderson 18-9. Player of the Day went to Annie Kim.
RUGBY
1st XV Rugby: For the last game of the term the 1st XV played Mount Albert Grammar at home. The pleasant weather resulted in good conditions for rugby and a decent sized crowd. The game was a stop, start affair with the referee awarding a large number of penalties. Stand-in captain Ben Cameron scored the first try to give Avondale a 5-0 lead which lasted right until the end of the half when fullback Tafia Tofa showed off his speed, scoring an excellent long range try under the posts. The resulting conversion from Ollie Carroll gave Avondale a 12-0 lead going into half time. A tight second half saw one try from MAGS and a penalty conversion from Isimase Tavae, resulting in a 15-5 win to Avondale, and bumping the winning streak up to 6 games in a row. The term finishes with Avondale in 3rd place on the table, with one extra game to play on the two teams above us. 2nd XV Rugby: Had a strong win in the first of their crossover games. The boys beat Pacific Advance 19-10 on Saturday morning. U70kg Rugby: Travelled to Sacred Heart and came away with the win, 35-12. U60kg Rugby: After many close results not going their way in recent weeks, the boys stepped it up against top-of-the-table Auckland

Premier 1 Netball: Continued their good form on Tuesday night, defeating Western Springs 45-35. Premier 2 Netball: Proved too strong for Rutherford, beating them 5127. Senior Black Netball: Went down 28-15 to Henderson. Senior White Netball: Won by default against St Dominic’s. Senior Grey Netball: Had a hard fought 18-14 win over Henderson. Junior Premier Netball: Continue to dominate their competition, defeating Waitakere 40-10. Meyuti Poutu won Player of the Day.

TAUREWA CAMP Preparations for our Term 3 trips are well on the way. Don't miss out on the opportunity to ski on Mt Ruapehu, get your consent forms in ASAP and join in creating memories at our very own Taurewa Camp. We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: ADULT HELPERS • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, STILL NEEDED hot pools, low ropes course and more! Tue 2 Jul • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and Tue 23 Jul more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or Tue 6 Aug equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to Tue 13 Aug 1 complete a police check.
