Friday's whole school Athletics Day was a brilliant event, with school-wide participation in a range of athletic events. Adding to the fun of the day were the Year 13 students who ran, jumped, hopped and skipped through their events while wearing fancy dress. The more serious athletes who emerged from the day will go on to compete in the Avondale College Championships Athletics Day to be held at Mt Smart Stadium on Thursday 21 February. See more photos on page 4.

TAUREWA WORKING BEE A fantastic crew of volunteers put atawhai into action at our Taurewa Camp working bee in the weekend! Lawns and the low ropes course area were mowed and manicured, tracks were cut, boundary trees were trimmed, the dining room exterior was washed and deck scrubbed, and a special touch of paint added to the outside tables by the teenage helpers. Inventory checks were completed along with other minor jobs, just in time for our very first camp which arrives next week! It was a huge effort by the staff and family members involved, and we are so grateful for them giving their time, energy and support for Taurewa and our students! We are planning further working bees throughout the year, so if you would like to be involved, please get in touch with Rosalin in the Taurewa Office: taurewa@avcol.school.nz

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa which is located in Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10's: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Year 12's: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 13's: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Room at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check. If you (or someone you know) would be keen to be involved, or if you would like to know more, please email: taurewa@avcol.school.nz See page 5 for trip dates.

FINDLAY SHANNON Following his success at the European GTramp competition in Denmark last year, Findlay Shannon has won a Gold AND a Bronze medal representing New Zealand at the Australasian Freestyle Trampolining competition - GTGamesANZ! Congratulations, Findlay!

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BOOK AMNESTY Calling all English books! They might have been hiding under your bed, lost behind the sofa, or forgotten in your schoolbag, but we urgently need them back for our 2019 classes! Please return any of your school-issued books to the box outside the English Department - no questions asked!

ACCOUNTS THANK YOU! Thank you to the many families who have utilised our secure Avondale College Family Connection payment portal to pay their 2019 costs and school donation already this year! ATHLETICS DAY

SPORTS REPORT Monday 4th February – Sunday 10th February

CRICKET

The Avondale College 1st XI came up against Takapuna on Saturday 9th February. Unfortunately, we were unable to chase down Takapuna’s total of 318/10. Abhishek Lal was the best fielder of the day, taking three catches along with his three wickets – a brilliant performance. Joshua De Zoysa also took three wickets, including the catch by Mihir Patil of the devastating batsman, Riley Mudford. Mohanshu Vaidya also kept up his performance by taking the two crucial first wickets. This was against a team that was in the premier grade last season, so we did well!

ROWING

A special mention this week goes to Maceo Tremlett who won a silver medal at the North Island Club Championship which was held from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 January. Maceo competed in the Men’s Intermediate Quad, representing Waitemata Rowing Club.

VOLLEYBALL

Our Premier Volleyball team took on De La Salle in a tough match, going down 3 sets to 0. Kelston were the next opponents, and the game was much closer, but unfortunately we came away with a 3-1 loss.

SWIMMING

Congratulations to Alex Dunkley and Jayden Collins who both represented Avondale College at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Open Water Championships. Alex achieved two gold medals for his age group in the 2km and 500m races. Jayden came 5th overall in the 2km, and picked up a bronze medal in the 500m race.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
