TERM 4 WEEK 1 17 October 2018

YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES Kanah claims fourth place at the Youth Olympic Games It has been a massive week for Avondale College's Year 13 weightlifter Kanah AndrewsNahu, who has been competing in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Kanah received the huge honour of being chosen to be New Zealand's flag bearer at the opening ceremony! She was suprised by New Zealand's Chef de Mission, Barbara Kendall, who popped in to one of Kanah's training sessions to share the exciting news before it was officially announced at a team function attended by athletes and support staff. Kendall said Andrews-Nahu was chosen because her actions epitomise the values and culture of the New Zealand Team. “Kanah is not only an exceptional athlete but a leader and role model at her school, in her community and in her sport,” said Kendall. “She shows maturity and commitment beyond her years and impresses on a daily basis. She’s also an inspiration to many young Maori and Pasifika athletes. “It’s my absolute pleasure to present Kanah with the New Zealand flag and name her as the flagbearer. She’s the perfect person to lead the New Zealand team into the Opening Ceremony.” Watch here In the competition, Kanah did extremely well - lifting a personal best, and a New Zealand Junior record, to take fourth place in her weightlifting event. According to the official report at www.olympic.org.nz, Kanah looked calm and collected as she hoisted 95kg in her best lift in the snatch. The 17-year-old then posted a mammoth PB and New Zealand junior record of 116kg in the clean and jerk. The lifts gave the 17-year-old a combined total of 211kg in the women’s +63kg group. “I’m stoked that I hit PBs and I hit what I set out to lift, I was actually only hoping to do 115 in the clean and jerk so 116, I’ll take it!” said Andrews-Nahu. “The competitors here are from some of the top countries in weightlifting so to be right up there with the big girls is great, I’m pleased with that performance.” Andrews-Nahu says missing out on the podium has only made her hungrier for success. “When I get home to New Zealand I’m definitely gonna be fighting even more.” (Source: www.olympic.org.nz)
