Performing in front of a crowd of thousands at the world’s largest Maori and Pasifika festival last week, Avondale College’s Samoan group showed that they are indeed world class - and proved it definitively by bringing home the award for the best co-ed group on ASB Polyfest’s Samoan Stage. Avondale’s Samoan group have historically been a force to be reckoned with at the annual competition, winning the top prize 11 times in the last 17 years. However, the last time Avondale’s name was on the trophy was in 2014, and it is with a great sense of achievement that the group has brought home the trophy once again. Trained by a dedicated group of tutors, most of whom are former Avondale College students themselves, the 58-strong group worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the competition, putting in many hours perfecting the new songs and dances that made up their twenty minute routine. Their performance on the day was flawless - with the group placing in the top three of all nine of the categories, winning five, as well as the overall prize. Teacher in charge, Ms Guinevere Alai said that she was extremely proud of the group’s efforts. "The commitment and determination the students had to be better after every single practice paid off on performance day. They were amazing."

LUCY MAKAEA: BIG WINS FOR LUCY Year 13 athlete Lucy Makaea has had a great week, winning both a prestigious Tania Dalton Foundation scholarship as well as the U19 Iron Person event at the Surf Life Saving Nationals. The Tania Dalton Foundation named Lucy as one of its first scholarship recipients last week, which will entitle her to receive personal mentoring and fiscal support. The Foundation was established in the memory of netballer Tania Dalton, and also aims to guide young women to lead their best lives, inspired through sport. At the Surf Life Saving National Champs held in Gisborne last week, Lucy did extremely well, winning the U19 women's Iron Person event. Watch an interview with Lucy on Maori Television here:
