PERCY MAKA BREAKS 36 YEAR INTERNATIONAL RECORD An international age grade record that has stood since 1982 was broken by Year 9 discus thrower Percy Maka in his Grade 12 Boys competition at the Auckland Athletics Senior Meet held on Saturday 3 March. Competing for his Papakura club, Percy threw an outstanding 48.73m at the event, winning not only the competition but also breaking the Auckland record he had previously set, as well as the international record set in June 1982 of 48.65m. This is the second time Percy has smashed an international age grade record in discus; he also set one as an 11 year old. Percy’s latest international record will be announced through official channels when the paperwork has been finalised in upcoming weeks. We look forward to seeing more of this rising star at athletics events throughout the year!

Avondale College's Environmental Council has joined forces with Paper4trees's waste minimising and tree planting programme to work towards diverting the amount of paper waste currently ending up in landfill. One hundred and sixty black eco-bins were distributed throughout the College last week, to be used just for paper and cardboard recycling. Donated by Fonterra, the bins are made from recycled light-proof milk bottles. The idea of the partnership with Paper4trees came from Dylan Chan, one of this year's Environmental Council's student leaders, after the students discovered that the large cardboard classroom bins used throughout the College needed to be replaced. For each two cubic metres of paper and cardboard recycled by Avondale College, Paper4trees will donate one native tree or plant. It's a great idea, says Environmental Council TIC, Mr Shawn Cooper. "It's really fantastic to see student initiative driving the Environmental Council. The idea for our recycling efforts to feed into a tree planting programme is brilliant".
