Avondale College students have gained outstanding results in their NCEA and Cambridge exams in 2017! Our achievement in NCEA has increased across all levels, and is well above the national performance levels in all year groups. Our University Entrance results have also increased, and at 71% is 11 points higher than the national average of 60%. Of particular note is the achievement of our Maori students, who are achieving well above the norms for not only Maori but all students in New Zealand. In the Cambridge International Examinations, our students once again performed extremely well. Two students gained the top marks in New Zealand for their subject: Ruohao (Howard) Mao in Applied ICT (AS Level) and Jesslyn Chen in Psychology (AS Level). This is the second year in a row that an Avondale College student has topped the Psychology examination - and both were taught by Ms Grace Williams. Our achievement in CIE continues to impress, with a 93% pass rate achieved at Year 11 and 96% at A Level. New Zealand Scholarship results were received yesterday, with Avondale College students achieving 31 Scholarships, including one Outstanding Scholarship (Akhilesh Madhur for Physics) and four students (Christine Sun, Bailey Tang, Helena May and Changji (Alex) Hua ) gaining scholarships while still in Year 12.

Mrs Murphy has been at Avondale College for four years, where she has held the portfolio of Deputy Principal in charge of student services. Her contribution to the College in many areas has been significant, and her warmth, positivity and commitment to excellence have been appreciated by all. ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS TUESDAY 20 FEBRUARY
The Avondale College Athletics Championships is taking place on Tuesday 20 February from 9:00am at The Trusts Arena, Henderson. This day is intended for students who qualified for events from last week's Whole School Athletics Sports Day. Names of students who have qualified are on the noticeboard outside the Sports Office. Permission letters can be collected from the Sports Office. Permission slips and the $5.00 fee is due on or before Friday 16 February and is payable to the Cashier or at the College Shop. Track Event Sign up - At the Whole School Athletics Sports Day the only track event held was the 100m. Track events are now open for all students to sign up for. Students can do this outside the Sports Office by Friday 16 February. 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m, 800m and 1500m. Buses will transport participants to the Trusts Arena from Avondale College at 8.30am. Students are to meet in the Halberg Gym at 8.00am. Students will race in their age groups on the day. Parents are more than welcome to join us for the day. The Avondale College Swimming Gala is taking place on Wednesday 21 February from 9.30am-2.30pm at West Wave Pool in Henderson. Permission letters can be collected from the Sports Office. Thursday's whole school Athletics Day was a brilliant event, with school-wide participation in a range of athletic events. Adding to the fun of the day were the Year 13 students who ran, jumped, hopped and skipped through their events while wearing fancy dress. The more serious athletes who emerged from the day will go on to compete in the Avondale College Championships Athletics Day to be held at the Trusts Arena on Tuesday 20 February.

During the past few months we have been working with our student management software provider to develop a smart phone app for Android and iOS devices which mirrors some of the functionality of Family Connection. The app provides a wealth of information for parents and also acts as a point of reference for timetables and a campus map for students. The app was released somewhat prematurely and we are working through some essential changes to ensure that it provides a good experience for all. When tested and ready we will launch the app to the College community.

We are well underway with the summer senior sport season for 2018. Look at the draw and follow our results each week for updates in sport!
CRICKET
The 1st XI Boys played against Kristin College on Saturday 3 February. Kristin scored 113/4 and Avondale scored 112 all out. Due to the wet weather the game was played on an artificial pitch. This first game of the season proved to be tough defensively and Kristin were able to score runs by pushing through our structure. We are looking to improve our form and competitive nature for the season to follow.
Our Year 13 Prefect group put atawhai into action today, selling Valentine's Day flowers, cupcakes and cookies to the College community. The initiative was about more than just sharing the love at the College though - all funds raised are being donated to the Heart Kids NZ's Little Hearts Day.

Ollie Carroll was selected to represent the Auckland Elite 18 Mixed Representative team who competed at 2018 Junior National Touch Championships from Saturday 9 February to Monday 11 February at Mountfort Park, Manurewa. They won gold after beating Waikato in the grand final of the U18 Mixed Grade!
SURF LIFE SAVING
Noah Makaea competed in the Northern Regions Surf Life Saving Competition held in Omaha on Saturday 3 February to Sunday 4 February. He competed in nine events and placed in six of them, obtaining a gold in the U14 Diamond Race, a silver in Beach Relay and Board Relay, and a bronze in Board Race, Surf Race and Cameron Race. With his successes he contributed to the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club placing second overall at the event and earning the Cath and Eddie Miller Cup for highest points. Maraea Whiu also competed at the Northern Region Surf Life Saving Competition competing under Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Club and won Silver in the U15 Girls Beach Sprints and Beach Flags. All Cricket games were cancelled this week due to wet weather.
VOLLEYBALL
The Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams kicked off their seasons on Thursday 8 February. The Senior Girls opened their season against strong opponents, Onehunga High School. The team is relatively young with a number of junior players stepping into the senior season for the first time as Year 11s. Maclani Michael (Year 12) showed great attack as an open hitter with our setters and sweepers settling in nicely to their roles in the team. We eventually lost in straight sets but we kept the intensity high and ran systems we had been working on in training over the summer. We look forward to the season ahead! The Senior Boys Volleyball team started their season well with a 2-0 win against Waitakere. Playing against Kelston’s returning Premier Boys Team, the boys were defeated 17-25, 22-25 in a hard fought battle. Given the team's fresh make-up and short lead up, this is an outstanding result. The boys are looking forward to the season ahead!

Nurse Heather Playle, Physiotherapist Karen Alderson, Nurse Hannah Normington and Administrator Donna Devlin The Avondale College Health Clinic is staffed by two nurses, a physiotherapist and an administrator. It is located in the Transverse Corridor, opposite the library. The Health Clinic is open from 8.45am - 3.15pm. We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. The College asks for medical information when you enrol your child, and it is important to let us know if your child's health care needs change, or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please email the nurses (nurse@avcol.school.nz), or phone the Avondale College clinic (09) 820 1718 or (021) 847 949. This will greatly assist our school in planning how best to support your child's health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details, or those of the person nominated as an emergency contact.
PHYSIO We also have a physiotherapist in the Health Clinic who is available to students between Monday to Friday 8.30am-2pm. If your child needs treatment they can make appointments in the Health Clinic waiting room. There is no charge for injury covered by ACC (ACC forms can be completed at the school Health Clinic if not already seen by a doctor). Our Physio can also treat private or non-ACC injuries as well, but there is a charge for this. Our Physio is also happy to do sports strapping before games, with a $2 charge to cover the cost of tape.
MUSIC LESSONS Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge. Lessons are held in small groups, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument. To find out more, students should fill out the orange form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Mr Stenbo at the Music Department as soon as possible. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists. MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department. Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, Taikaka Orchestra (allcomers band), Big Band, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands. ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.
Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation. Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
