Please note, that due to internal assessment components, not all subjects are examined during this upcoming week. JAZZ AND SOUL EVENING Wednesday night was a superb night of jazz, funk and soul as students from all year levels took to the stage to perform at Avondale College's annual Jazz & Soul concert. The solid foundations being laid through our junior Jazz Academy programme was evident as the students performed confident renditions of jazz standards Watermelon Man, Blue Bossa and Moon Dance. Our students continued to shine with the Blue Note Combo and Junior Jazz Combo playing some superb renditions of standards that showcased different jazz styles, including one of Stevie Wonder's most popular and well loved tunes, Don't You Worry' bout a Thing. One of the highlights of the evening was The Pacific Voices trio who gave the audience a superb musical treat with their a capella rendition of Total Praise. Our senior students also shone, with our Year 13 Music students showing a confident performance style, our Senior Jazz Combo impressing with their interpretations of three classic jazz pieces, and the Soul Band who had the audience grooving along with Pharrell Williams's Happy and Bruno Mars's Uptown Funk. EXAM STUDY IN THE LIBRARY During senior exam week the college library is a practical choice for senior students who wish to study during school hours. To create a positive and productive study environment for everyone, students are asked to study individually, quietly and to consider others. In order to maintain the quiet study atmosphere, for the 30 minutes before an exam, it will be exit only from the library, there will be no entry to the library during this time. Students need to make note of this 30 minute time period and plan their arrival time and study breaks accordingly. Study breaks give students the opportunity to: eat and drink, socialise, get some fresh air and relax their mind. If the library is full, entry will be limited.

JAZZ AND SOUL CONTINUED The evening concluded with a performance from our Big Band, fresh from their medal-winning performance at the Aspire Music Festival in Brisbane, showing once again, just why they so deserved this accolade. The evening was a superb showcase of the talent coming through all levels of the school, and thanks go to the many teachers and tutors who are helping to make this possible.
NCEA SUPERVISORS REQUIRED FOR 2017 (PAID POSITION) Supervisors need to be available from the 9th November to 1st December for morning and afternoon sessions. This is a paid position. Supervisors need to be fluent in English and be able to supervise a room full of students. A high level of integrity is required. KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL The KBB Music Festival is one of the highlights of the musical calendar, and the week has been a busy one for our students, with performances by our Taikaka Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, and - coming up on Thursday night at 9pm - our Big Band. Students have enjoyed playing in the beautiful surroundings of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral Church, and we have been advised that two of our groups, the Symphony Orchestra and the String Ensemble will be receiving awards at the Gala Concert on Saturday night.

GATEWAY Gateway 2018 applications are now open! Gateway is an opportunity for Year 12 & 13 students to have work experience in a career of their choice. We will place them with a company for up to 10 days, to see if it’s the career for them. Each student can also gain on average 20 NZQA credits while being on the Gateway programme. If your child is thinking about a career and they would like to give it a go, please collect a form from Mrs Lee in the Careers Department. NZ SPELLING BEE In what has already been a massive month for our Avcol performing arts students, the Auckland-wide Stand Up Stand Out competition has been running a series of heats in preparation for the grand final to be held on 2nd September. Already two Avondale College entries have been named as finalists -Joshua Parker will be competing in the Instrumental Solo categories on drums, and vocalists "The Uzo's" (Tinei Tagaloa-Leniu, Atonia Vavao and Olivia Masoe, accompanied by Harold Taotafa Vaimasenuu) - are through to the finals in the Group Vocal Solo category. Other finalists are still being decided, but in the running from Avondale College are solo vocalists Tinei Tagaloa-Leniu, and Angel Maene-Lokeni, and two of our bands: 'Dale Soul and 13MUS, who have all made it through to the semi-final round to be held on 21 August. We wish them all the best! The dance heats are being held today, and successful groups will go straight through to the finals, so watch this space! The semi-finals for the bands are at the Otara Music and Arts Centre, Bairds Rd on Monday 21 August. Our students are performing from 10am and entry is free, so come and support our students if you can!
"Histrionic." "Claustrophobic." "Buoyant." These were not just the emotions felt by the Auckland semi-finalists of the NZ Spelling Bee - but some of the words they had to spell aloud in front of an audience and panel of judges on Saturday! Superb results in the classroom testing round of the NZ Spelling Bee meant that twenty five Avondale College students made it through to New Zealand's top 200 of the national competition! Twenty three of these joined a total of 86 students at the Auckland semi-final at Auckland Grammar School on Saturday 12 August. After a challenging written round of twenty words, half taken from the 100 word official list and the other half made up of previously unseen words, six of our students progressed to the stage for the sudden-death oral round. This was nerve-wracking for students and audience alike as each competitor stepped up to the microphone to spell aloud their words - one mistake meant they were out. After a number of rounds, our final Avondale representative, standing, Grace Elijas, made it through to the final top ten before going out. Congratulations to all our top spellers, and particularly to the six who made it into the oral rounds!
TRIPLE SILVER FOR OUR JAZZ COMBOS Congratulations to all three of our jazz combos who were presented with silver awards for their performances at the Auckland School Jazz Band Competition held at the Pt Chevalier RSA over the past three weeks. This is a great result for all three bands, all of which feature students from all year levels!

SPORTS REPORT Week 3- Sports Report 7th August-13th August We are nearing the end of the winter sport season, with many teams in all grades competing in play off matches and final placings. A huge congratulations to all our teams who will be competing in semi-final matches this week!
Basketball
The Premier Boys won 77-75 vs Pakuranga College. It was basket for basket for the most of the game and prepared the team well for their final weekly game of the round robin season against Liston College. Following this final home game of the season, Kennedy Nikolaison (Year 13) was awarded his five year Gold Service badge in a presentation after the game. Kennedy has played in the Premier Basketball team since beginning at Avondale College in Year 9 and has been a huge contributor to the team over the years. He also was a great impact player in Friday night’s game against Liston College, converting a number of points through lay ups and three pointers. The team eventually went down 83-93 but have qualified for the semi-final round to be held on Friday 18 August 4:30pm at North Shore Events Centre. The Premier Girls left their best performance on the court for their final game of the season against Carmel College, winning 39-34. We are proud of the efforts this young team has made throughout the year and and are looking forward to seeing the culture develop around this team as our basketball programme grows in the years to come.
Football
1st XI Girls won 2-0 vs Pakuranga and are playing off in the semi-final against Mt Roskill Grammar on Wednesday 16 August. 1st XI Boys won 4-1 vs Rangitoto College and are currently sitting at the top of the table in the A1 Grade with only two more rounds left in the season. They play their final home game on Saturday 19 August against Rosmini College. 3rd XI Boys won 7-1 vs Kelston Boys and are keeping their play off hopes alive for another week. Year 10A Boys won 5-2 vs Massey Junior A. Year 9A lost 6-0 vs Rosmini. Year 9B lost 5-0 vs Mt Albert Sky. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half. The boys worked very hard but were outnumbered and were very tired during the second half. Parents from MAGS were very impressed by our team’s heart and fighting spirit.
Hockey
The 1st XI Boys lost both their games during the week: 9-0 to Kings College and 6-4 to Kristin College. The 1st XI Girls won 3-0 against Epsom Girls. This win kept the girls’ spirits up and was just what they needed a few weeks from tournament. Brilliant effort was given by the whole team who continue to grow each week and consistent training is helping build a strong foundation for the future of girls’ hockey.

The U15 Boys have been playing hard every game. With no subs available, this week was no exception as we paired up against Mt Albert Grammar for the second time, having beaten them in the round robin. This time they played a much stronger passing game and outsmarted us with their teamwork. At half time we were 2-0 down but fighting hard to stay in the match, with semi-final placements on the line. A brilliant individual effort from Shoma Hirota, dribbling past multiple defenders, and diving off balance at the end, saw him push the ball past their keeper right on full time, giving us a consolation goal with the game ending in a 1-2 loss. The maths has worked in our favour, thankfully, and next week is our biggest game of the season: the semi-final for the U15 Auckland Championship, where we again play MAGS. A win will put us into the final, so we are all fired up and ready to bring it home.
Lacrosse
Premier Girls took part in the Lacrosse Girls Championship Division 1 held at College Rifles on Wednesday 9th August. The girls fought well throughout the day but unfortunately couldn’t register a win in a very competitive tournament.
The Girls Black B lacrosse team participated in the Lacrosse Girls Championship Division 2 held at College Rifles on Thursday 10th August. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the tournament even though results didn't go their way. They were cheerful and positive, always encouraging each other to keep on trying. It was great to see the "B" and "C" teams cheering each other on when the opportunities arose. The girls were a pleasure to work with and their love of the game shone brightly. The Girls White C had a really good season. With a lot of new players to the sport and despite not winning many games, they were determined and demonstrated endeavour throughout. The girls were positive and showed the heart values in every game. At the Lacrosse Girls Championship Division 3 held at College Rifles, they placed 8th overall, with Sian Dillon scoring the only goal on the day.

Premier Girls 1 lost 46-20 vs Massey. Premier Girls 2 won 37-33 vs St Dominic Senior A. Senior Girls White lost 25-18 vs Henderson High School Senior Black. Senior Girls Black lost 23-19 vs Massey Senior A. Senior Girls Gold won 31-13 vs ACG Senior B. Senior Girls Silver won 22-9 vs Rutherford Senior Blue. Senior Girls Grey won 17-13 vs GBHS Social and also lost 8-6 against Lynfield Senior White. Year 10 White won 14-10 vs Rutherford 10 Blue and also defeated Lynfield 10 Grey 29-2. Player of the Day went to Ninah Benest (C/GA) for being a dedicated captain as without her the game would have been defaulted to Rutherford 10 Blue. Player of the Day vs Lynfield was Lauolive Roma for awesome intercepts. Year 9 Grey won 6-4 vs Rutherford 9B and also lost 23-6 vs ACG. Player of the Day was Lorena Castillo and Julewen Rany. Year 10 Black lost 17-24 vs GBHS 10B. Player of the Day: Coco Lovatt (C/WD) for awesome intercepts and solid defence. Year 9 Black won 33-16 vs Henderson High School 9A. Player of the Day: Monique Proctor -Bilich. Year 9 White lost 24-9 vs WSC Waiorea Karoro.

Under 15 Rugby League Team - Silver Medalists in A Grade
Rugby League
The U15 Boys lost 24-18 vs St Pauls. The Under 15 Boys played against St Pauls College on Wednesday 9 August at Ellerslie Eagles Rugby League Club. We were ranked first after the round robin weekly week section of the season. We were down 12-0 at half time and came back fighting strongly in the second half, levelling the score to 18-18 with two minutes left on the clock. Avondale completed their last set of six tackles, St Pauls scored off their first tackle and converted their try right on the hooter. Try scorers were: one to Leroy Conlon, three tries scored by Seeti Kuresa, and one goal conversion kicked by Davie Kolesi. A huge thank you to Mr Brocklehurst and Keith Hanley for their dedication in coaching and managing the team this year.
Rugby Union
Premier Girls won 35-5 vs Epsom Girls. 1st XV Boys won 10-5 vs Southern Cross. Saturday saw the Avondale College 1st XV play Southern Cross Campus in a match with heightened tension! The season would be over for the team that lost and they would be relegated to C Grade. With so much at stake, it was a tense Avcol team that ran out onto the muddy pitch in South Auckland. With a reduced reserve bench of three, each player had to perform the very best they had all season. At half time Avcol was down 5-0. After a rousing speech from the coaches, the team ran in a try in the first ten minutes of the second half, with Tevita Kalu crossing the line. A conversion by Jack Borham took the team into the lead. Some infringements on both sides saw a yellow card to each team. Avcol was awarded two penalties in close succession, with one going between the posts, increasing Avcol’s lead to 10-5. A tense last three minutes saw Southern Cross get the ball down to their try line and they had attempt after attempt to cross the line. This called for a massive defensive effort from the Avcol side and they rose to the occasion, resulting in one of the opposition players eventually dropping the ball forward and the referee blowing the fulltime whistle. It was a massive effort from a depleted team and won them another 70 minutes of rugby next week! Players of the Day – The Team!
1st XV Boys - photos courtesy of the Wood family It has been a long season between wins for Avondale's 6th Grade rugby team, but patience, commitment and a continual striving for perfection paid off with a handsome 14-7 win over a strong St Kentigern's side on Saturday. All season, our backline has demonstrated a clinical precision when making incisive breaks with ball in hand. Jarq Paul has been a stand-out player, showing extraordinary pace and a magical sidestep. He scored a quick first try for us in this match and was always dangerous with the ball. St Kentigern's were stacked with large players who had been given dispensation to play in a restricted grade, but our forwards were undaunted and gave them little headway. Our front row of Oliver Harrison, Viliami Lavulo and John Vake were immense under considerable pressure from imposing runs by the opposition's towering forwards. Lee Scott stood out with some gainful "pick-and-goes"; Joshua Duffin provided his usual excellent service to the backs, while Jamiel Tipoki and Korbyn TamatiBarratt made some piercing runs. The match was tied up at half-time, when the coach's advice was to keep hold of the ball and not to kick through on attack. Newly-arrived Spaniard, Julian Salcedo Molina replaced Joshua at half-back through injury and showed a natural flair

in the position in only his second game on New Zealand soil. It was a true team performance and in the end the boys were rewarded with a well-worked try under the posts from John Vake, much to the relief of coach and manager. Victory doughnuts provided by our supporter, Ernest, were well received by the team. The U15 rugby team made sure they finished their season with five wins in a row by defeating St Pauls 34-0. The match was played in difficult conditions as the field at St Pauls resembled a swamp but Avondale adapted to this by working hard as a team to hold on to the ball for long periods. This led to them scoring six tries. Two tries went to man of the match Filipo Whitehouse-Opetaia Tovio, who also defended well and set up a try for captain Riku Hayashi. Ke-Juan Parata-Clarke, Tafia Tofa, Corey Wood and Tyler Loomes were also stand-out performers in this well-deserved finish to the season. In the last round robin game of the season the U14B Boys team hosted Kelston Boys at home. The team was focused and determined from the start, with a well- executed backs’ move resulting in a 60 metre try from Nathaniel Roma. Two tries from Isiraeli Senibulu and one to Ola Hoeft capped a dominant first half from Avondale, who took a 29-0 lead into the break. Kelston came out well after the half time break, forcing the team to make several try saving tackles. A long range try from Casey Wills opened the scoring in the second half which was followed by tries from all three backs reserves Philos Matatia, Lech Ulberg-Lo Tam and Lucas Ojala. A strong performance from the forwards was a key in the 51-0 scoreline. With quarter finals approaching next week it will be vital the boys continue this focus and effort moving forward.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. HELP FOR FIRST TIME STUDENTS We know making decisions about tertiary study is a big deal for students. Students who sign up to receive our 'starting out' information will get regular emails with tips and hints to help them through the process. Our next email to students on 17 August is about understanding Student Allowances and Student Loans. FAMILY CONNECTION The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. Family accounts can be viewed and student fees paid via Family Connection.
