B SAFE SCHOOL LEADERS The Avondale College Safe School Leaders were introduced to the school at the assemblies this week and presented with their badges.

These outstanding students are leading the way in creating and providing a safe school environment for all our students.

Chosen by Deans and Guidance staff for their strong personal characteristics of determination and reliability, they have received training from the Guidance Department in conflict resolution and are equipped with strategies for reducing incidents of bullying.

Our friendly Safe School Leaders are rostered on duty at lunchtimes, and are easily identifiable by their bright orange badges. For a full list of names see page 2.

SEAWEEK The Environmental Council ran a variety of fun activities this week to raise awareness around plastics and litter. Some of the events included a week-long photography competition, and a lunchtime microbead-free facial scrub workshop where students learned how to make skin-care products using natural materials such as sugar, honey and vanilla. Other lunchtime activities included recycling T-Shirts into no-sew carry bags, and a basketball rubbish competition in the gym.

BRETT MCGREGOR EVENING

Avondale College's Theatre was filled with delicious aromas on Monday night as Masterchef winner, author and TV presenter Brett McGregor worked his magic in front of an appreciative audience. Brett demonstrated five easy and delicious recipes from his new book, Chop Chop, including oysters with ponzu and ginger sauce; mussels with Thai dipping sauce and crispy shallots; and - a crowd favourite - roasted grapes with thyme, ricotta and grilled bread.

CAREERS: PACIFIC ISLAND LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Eight of our Year 13 Pasfika students made the most of an inspiring course this week. The Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) programme is designed to inspire, engage and develop Pacific leaders and help them to make informed decisions about their education and careers. The programme is delivered in two parts, one full day for the students followed by an information evening for both students and family.

SPORTS REPORT Sports Report 3rd- 9th April

ATHLETICS

Joanna Poland won gold 1500m and silver 800m at the North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships held in Inglewood, 8-9 April 2017. Congratulations, Joanna!

TAG FOOTBALL

Auckland Secondary Schools Tag Football Championships was held on Friday 7th April at Cornwall Park. It was a fantastic day with the Avondale Senior Girls coming away with an outstanding result, wining the final against One Tree Hill College 2-1. The team beat Waitakere and Aorere College in the pool rounds. They lost to One Tree Hill in the final play off game, finished second and advanced to the semi final against Glenfield College where at the final whistle the score was a 2-2 draw. The game then went to a 5v5 drop off, no subs, whereby the first team to score a try wins unless there is a right of reply from the opposition. Avondale won the toss and had possession to attack first. Johreena Sekene scored off the set which meant Glenfield got the opportunity to attack as part of the “right of reply” rule – having not touched the ball on the first attack. Avondale was able to hold out Glenfield for the tags and won the game. In the final the team showed determination and maximum effort throughout and the result not only reflects the strong talent of the girls but the respect they demonstrated towards other teams and the atawhai shown amongst themselves. Standout performances were given by international representatives Year 13 students Johreena Sekene, Casey Mansson (Captain) and Tayla Latu.

TENNIS BASKETBALL

The Basketball Premier Boys competed in the Premier Qualifying Tournament on the 8-9th April at Pakuranga College. Avondale played superbly and are in a very good position to gain entry into the premier grade after finishing in the top four. They will now go on to play in the play offs on Tuesday 11th April against Manurewa College at the North Shore Events Centre.

The Senior Boys and Girls have had a successful season with both teams winning their grades. The Senior Boys beat Waitakere College 5 out of 9 games on Saturday 8th April, with fantastic singles and doubles play. The Senior Girls also had a win this week, beating Lynfield College 6-1.

EQUESTRIAN

Kelsey Graham recently represented Avondale College at the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Ribbon Day held at Coatesville Pony Club. Kelsey rode her horse, Mr President, in the Maiden Hack ring.

The competition was of a very high standard and Kelsey performed very well, just missing out on placing on this occasion. She showed exceptionally good horsemanship, presenting her horse to a high standard and producing several very classy clear jumping rounds as well as showing excellent sportsmanship.

SWIMMING: NZ OPEN SWIM CHAMPS

This was a highly successful swimming meet for two of our students, Gabrielle Fa'amausili and Ikko Shibuya. Amidst a number of great results, Gabi (17 years) qualified for July's FINA World Champs in Budapest, and Ikko broke the NZ Record for 15 year olds men’s 50 metre butterfly. Congratulations, Ikko and Gabi!

WATERPOLO

Senior Boys suffered a loss to Mt Albert Grammar on Sunday 9th April.

The Senior Boys Waterpolo team played their final game of the season.

The game was thrilling to watch but unfortunately they lost to Mount Albert Grammar 8-3. Sam Morris played especially well, managing to defend the goal against several excellent players.

The whole team has had an excellent season, showing vast improvment from their first games.

FOLLOW US! TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
