With this forecast, Ivano Vacondio, the President of Federalimentare, summarizes the current situation of production and distribution in Italy and in the world of Made-in-Italy food products during the health emergency caused by coronavirus. These straightforward words were streamed live for Foreign Press journalists in Italy during the
international press conference that took place through a virtual connection coordinated from the Rome headquarters of foreign media correspondents in Italy. «Despite real difficulties, the Italian food supply chain has never stopped, working up to 75% of its potential, going from two to three 8-hour shifts, Saturday and Sunday included. This industry has shown a strong reaction that is part of most Italians’ DNA». More specifically, as far as the
milling sector is concerned, «if the huge demand for our products has put Italian production capacity to the test, a bubble might be expected after the emergency and there will be a stark drop in demand, due to a reasonable consumption of the stocks that families have hoarded up. Yet, I am optimistic: the reopening of the catering industry will give breath because people will want to hang out, eat out and meet in front of a good dish».
