In Every Story, There’s Strength: Building a Mentally Healthy Community in Avalon Park

Each May, communities across the nation observe Mental Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to foster understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to prioritize their mental well-being. This year, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is leading the conversation with the theme: “In Every Story, There’s Strength.” This powerful message reminds us that each person’s journey with mental health is unique—and that sharing those experiences can be a vital source of healing, connection, and empowerment.

In Avalon Park Orlando, this idea resonates deeply. Designed around the guiding principle of “Live, Learn, Work, Play,” Avalon Park fosters a lifestyle that encourages balance and wellness in every stage of life. Here, residents find strength not only in their own stories but in the shared experiences of their neighbors, local leaders, and community partners.

Mental health is not just a focus for one month a year—it is part of how Avalon Park is built. From Pilates in the park and music performances that lift the spirit, to walkable green spaces that promote physical and emotional well-being, Avalon Park is a place where people are encouraged to slow down, connect, and care for their whole selves.

This May, the community will join in the national movement by spotlighting mental health through local initiatives, including a new partnership with Ellie Mental Health. Throughout the month, Ellie will provide accessible mental health resources

based on feedback from Avalon Park residents. These weekly tools will focus on everyday ways to strengthen emotional wellness and remind us all that support is always close by. If you have not filled out the survey and would like to, submit your feedback by following this link.

The month will also feature a variety of events that bring people together, celebrate life’s meaningful moments, and promote a deeper sense of connection—each one an opportunity to find strength in community.

This May, Avalon Park will host a variety of community events that support mental and emotional wellness. Festivities begin with the Cinco de Mayo Night Market on Friday, May 3rd, bringing together local vendors, music, and food for a lively celebration of culture and community. In addition, residents are encouraged to explore Mother’s Day specials and experiences happening across Downtown Avalon Park, which are highlighted in a dedicated article linked here

In Avalon Park, stories matter—your story matters. Whether through quiet reflection in one of our community parks, participation in a creative workshop, or simply connecting with others at a local event, there are opportunities every day to build a healthier, stronger you.

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, let us remember: In Every Story, There’s Strength. And in Avalon Park, you never have to walk that journey alone.

Building a Healthier Community, Together

of an important community health assessment conducted several years ago by AdventHealth in partnership with Avalon Park Group. We set out to better understand what medical resources were most needed in Avalon Park to achieve our shared vision of becoming Central Florida’s healthiest community.

What stood out clearly then—and remains true today— is the overwhelming need for greater access to mental health services. The results pointed not just to a lack of providers, but to a deeper truth: mental health is a foundation for strong, resilient communities, and it is often the area that needs the most support.

Although we at Avalon Park Group are not mental health professionals, my wife Jill—who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology—has often reminded me of the timeless principle: mens sana in corpore sano—a healthy mind in a healthy body. It is a concept we believe in deeply as we plan and build our communities.

At Avalon Park, we understand that the design of a neighborhood can have a strong impact on the mental well-being of the residents that live there. That is why we focus not only on physical infrastructure but also on emotional and social infrastructure. When neighbors know each other, when families feel safe, and when people feel connected, communities thrive. That sense of belonging can be one of the most powerful protectors of mental health.

We also believe in offering a wide variety of outlets for the mind, body, and spirit. Every person’s path to well-being looks a little different, so our goal is to create an environment that supports all of them. For the body there are recreational spaces, the East Orlando Gym, F45, yoga in the park, youth sports, and walkable neighborhoods. For the mind there is access to mental health professionals, community art workshops, live music, and continuing education. For the spirit there are spaces for worship, reflection, and service, open to all faiths and backgrounds.

Over the past year, we have continued to expand our mental health support efforts—welcoming new providers and forming partnerships with organizations dedicated to emotional well-being. We are also increasing programs that offer safe and supportive spaces for connection and self-expression, including youth mentorship, art therapy, and educational workshops. This month, we are pleased to introduce a new resource from local provider Ellie Mental Health, who will be sharing a series of helpful tools and information throughout May, shaped directly by feedback gathered through a community survey.

I often think back to a service I attended in Bithlo led by our long-time friend, Pastor Dale Brooks. He reminded us all that while there are many practical needs—clean water, food, and shelter—the spiritual and emotional needs of a community are just as urgent. Faith, purpose, and service can be healing forces. In that spirit, I encourage you to give back this month. Acts of service—whether volunteering at a local school, helping a neighbor, or supporting a local nonprofit—are powerful tools for cultivating positive mental health. When we give, we connect. And when we connect, we strengthen the very fabric of our community.

With the focus on mental health in the May, I challenge us all to recommit to building a community where well-being-in all its forms-is within reach for everyone. Together, we can shape a place where the mind, body, and spirit are not just cared for—but truly thrive.

From the Desk of Commissioner

Maribel Gomez Cordero

Happy May 2025!

May is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s a month to celebrate mothers, remember those who gave their lives for our country, and get excited for graduations and summer break. It’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors, have picnics and barbecues, and appreciate the simple things in life.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Mental wellbeing is essential to our overall quality of life, and it affects everyone. This month, we’re reminded of the importance of self-care, checking in with ourselves and others, and supporting those who may be struggling. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and by fostering empathy and understanding, we can create a culture where mental wellness is prioritized and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The County’s redistricting advisory board is still having meetings in the leadup to finalizing the new County Commission map. In May, there will be two meetings of this board. The first will be on Wednesday May 7th at 6pm, the second will be on May 22nd at 6pm. Both meetings will be held at the County Administration Center in Downtown (201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando FL 32801). I encourage anyone interested to attend this meeting or watch from home via Orange TV’s YouTube channel, as this will be a great opportunity for District 4 residents to share their feedback with the committee members and help shape how the districts will look like.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the

Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm.

Building Stronger Care Routines for Senior Oral Health

Caring for the oral health of dependent seniors is a vital responsibility that profoundly influences their overall well-being. As a caregiver, understanding the nuances of senior dental care can empower you to make informed decisions that enhance their quality of life. From leveraging digital tools for efficient record-keeping to selecting appropriate oral care products, each step you take can significantly impact their health. Recognizing the connection between oral hygiene and chronic illnesses further underscores the importance of diligent care.

Knowing the Connection Between Oral Health and Illness

Understanding the link between oral health and chronic illnesses in seniors is vital. Poor oral hygiene can worsen conditions like diabetes and heart disease, as bacteria from gum disease may enter the bloodstream, potentially aggravating heart issues. Seniors with diabetes are particularly prone to infections, including those in the mouth, making regular dental care crucial. Maintaining good oral health can help manage blood sugar levels and reduce cardiovascular risks. Therefore, prioritizing oral hygiene is essential for preventing cavities and safeguarding overall health in older adults.

Considering Cognitive Impairments

Caring for seniors with cognitive challenges, such as dementia, requires special attention to their oral health needs. These individuals often face difficulties with daily oral hygiene due to memory loss or diminished motor skills, which can increase their risk of dental problems. Establishing a consistent routine and using visual or verbal cues can assist them with brushing and flossing. Choosing userfriendly dental products, like electric toothbrushes with larger handles, can also empower them to maintain their oral hygiene more independently.

Enhancing Senior Oral Care with Digital Records

Digitizing dental records is vital in supporting dependent seniors’ oral health. By transforming paper documents into digital formats, you can ensure that critical dental histories and treatment plans are always accessible. You can try this mobile scanning app to quickly capture documents with your device’s camera and convert them into PDFs, making the process efficient and reducing the risk of losing critical information. This digital approach simplifies record-keeping and enables easy sharing with healthcare professionals, allowing you to concentrate more on the seniors’ well-being rather than administrative duties.

Getting the Proper Oral Health Products

Selecting the right oral care products is essential to address specific dental needs, such as sensitivity and gum health. Seniors often face increased tooth sensitivity, making regular toothpaste uncomfortable. Opt for toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth containing ingredients like potassium nitrate to alleviate discomfort. Maintaining gum health is also crucial, as many older adults are

prone to periodontal issues. Choosing a mouthwash that supports gum health, particularly those with antibacterial properties, can help prevent gum disease and promote oral well-being.

Prioritizing Hydration for Senior Oral Health

Keeping seniors well-hydrated is crucial for their oral health. Water helps prevent dry mouth, a condition that can increase the risk of cavities due to reduced saliva, which is essential for neutralizing acids and removing food particles. Encouraging seniors to drink enough water supports saliva production, which is vital for protecting teeth and gums. Water is a safe, sugar-free option, unlike sugary drinks that can erode enamel. Therefore, promoting regular water intake is a simple yet effective way to enhance the oral health of dependent seniors.

Understanding Medication’s Impact on Senior Oral Health

It’s essential to understand how medications can impact seniors’ oral health. Many common prescriptions, such as antihistamines and blood pressure medications, can cause dry mouth, which reduces saliva production. Saliva is crucial for neutralizing acids and removing food particles, so its reduction can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. Additionally, some medications might lead to gum swelling or bleeding, potentially worsening existing dental issues. By staying informed about these side effects and consulting with healthcare professionals, you can help maintain the oral health of your loved ones.

Supporting Seniors with Dental Anxiety

To effectively care for the oral health of dependent seniors, it’s essential to understand the roots of dental anxiety, often linked to past traumatic experiences or fear of pain. Many elderly individuals may have faced distressing dental treatments, which can heighten anxiety about future visits. Recognizing these fears can tailor your approach to provide a more comforting and reassuring experience. Offering gentle, empathetic care can help ease their anxiety and improve their dental health.

Your commitment to understanding and addressing the oral health needs of seniors can lead to profound improvements in their quality of life. By integrating these strategies into your caregiving routine, you not only support their physical health but also contribute to their emotional well-being. The impact of your efforts extends beyond immediate health benefits, fostering a sense of dignity and comfort for the seniors in your care.

Do you need Flood Insurance?

The difference between National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) flood policies and private market flood insurance policies in Florida largely comes down to the provider, coverage options, cost, and claims handling. At The White Agency, Inc., we help you navigate these options to find the best flood insurance coverage for your needs. Here’s a breakdown: Provider

o NFIP Flood Policies: These are government-backed policies provided by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) through authorized insurance companies. The program is designed to make flood insurance more accessible and affordable.

o Private Market Flood Policies: These are offered by private insurance companies (like State Farm, Allstate, etc.). These policies can be more flexible and tailored to individual needs but are not backed by the government. The White Agency, Inc. can help you explore private market options that may better suit your specific requirements.

Coverage

o NFIP Flood Policies: These policies offer standardized coverage with specific limits:

• Residential Properties: Up to $250,000 for structure and $100,000 for personal property.

• Commercial Properties: Up to $500,000 for the building and $500,000 for contents.

• NFIP policies do not cover certain types of damage, such as additional living expenses, business interruption, or damages due to moisture or mold after the flood.

o Private Market Flood Policies: These policies often provide more flexible coverage options and higher limits. Private insurers may offer additional protection like:

• Replacement cost coverage for personal property (where NFIP often offers actual cash value).

• Additional living expenses or temporary housing if the home is uninhabitable.

• Coverage for mold, and sometimes coverage for basements or areas that may not be covered under NFIP policies.

o At The White Agency, Inc., we work with top-rated private insurers to ensure you receive the best coverage available.

Cost

o NFIP Flood Policies: Generally, NFIP flood insurance tends to be more affordable, especially for lower-risk properties. However, rates are increasing due to the implementation of new pricing models (Risk Rating 2.0), and premiums can vary depending on the property’s location, elevation, and flood risk.

o Private Market Flood Policies: Private flood insurance can sometimes be more expensive than NFIP, especially in highrisk areas. However, it can also be more competitive, and for certain properties, it may offer better coverage options at a similar or slightly higher cost. In some cases, it may be cheaper, especially if it provides additional benefits or more customized policies. The White Agency, Inc. can provide comparisons to help you determine the best value for your money.

Claims Process

o NFIP Flood Policies: FEMA manages the claims process, and policyholders typically have to deal with FEMA’s claims adjusters and procedures. The process can sometimes be slower due to the bureaucracy of government systems.

o Private Market Flood Policies: Private insurers often provide a more streamlined, customer-oriented claims process with potentially faster responses and a more direct line of communication with adjusters. However, the quality of the claims process can vary between insurers. The White Agency, Inc. ensures that you work with reputable insurers known for their efficient claims service.

Availability and Access

o NFIP Flood Policies: Available nationwide, but must be purchased from an authorized insurer, as FEMA partners with these companies to issue the policies.

o Private Market Flood Policies: Availability can vary depending on the insurer. Some private insurers may offer policies in certain regions or may have specific requirements, such as being in a designated flood zone. The White Agency, Inc. can assist you in finding the right private flood policy that fits your location and risk level.

Risk and Reliability

o NFIP Flood Policies: Since these are backed by the federal government, they are considered very reliable, and there is less risk of the insurer going out of business. However, NFIP is often underfunded and might struggle to cover all claims during widespread flood events.

o Private Market Flood Policies: These are backed by private insurers, which might offer more innovative options, but there is the potential for more variability in terms of company stability, depending on the insurer’s financial health. The White Agency, Inc. partners with trusted insurers to ensure you receive reliable protection.

Key Takeaways:

• NFIP policies are often more affordable and governmentbacked, but they have limited coverage options.

• Private market policies tend to offer more flexible coverage and higher limits but can be more expensive.

• Private insurers may provide faster claims processing and additional benefits that NFIP does not cover.

When choosing between NFIP and private flood insurance in Florida, it’s important to compare costs, coverage options, and the potential for out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a flood. In areas with high flood risk, private insurers may offer better coverage, but in some cases, the NFIP may still be the most affordable option. The White Agency, Inc. is here to help you navigate these choices and find the best solution for your specific needs.

Autism Awareness Is About More than “Acceptance” – It’s About Action

Approximately one in 31 children in the United States has autism, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control. And while there are many reasons that number is on the rise — from updated diagnostic criteria to wider awareness — it’s time we fully recognize and more proactively advocate for our neighbors who are on the spectrum.

Here’s the truth: Everyone in the world faces their own kind of challenges in life — financial troubles, bad relationships, stressful jobs, you name it — that make it hard to achieve what they want in life. But when you have autism, or when you have a different kind of developmental disability, your challenges aren’t hidden from the world.

Struggling to rise above hardship is part of being human, and many kids and adults who are on the spectrum do overcome the barriers society has created for them. They succeed in school, launch influential careers, start families and lead communities. But for those with more significant needs — kids that might struggle with walking, speaking, and day-to-day tasks — solutions may be harder to access.

Florida currently ranks 49th out of 50 states for the amount of funding it provides to its citizens with special needs. Of the 400,000 individuals in need, only 50,000 qualify for assistance — and only 30,000 receive it. The remaining 20,000 are on a waiting list that can take up to six years or more to navigate — meaning that thousands of families are left to make it work on their own.

The world isn’t always a welcoming place. It’s full of noises and sensory inputs that can be painfully overstimulating; it’s full of people who don’t understand, and can be repelled by, unfamiliar symptoms like fidgeting or vocalizations. Even schools, playgrounds, libraries and other kid-friendly spaces aren’t always designed with the needs of children with autism in mind.

That’s why schools that are designed for special needs make a big difference. For parents who go through life explaining, defending and advocating for their child’s needs, being able to rely on someone else who understands and cares is an extraordinary relief. For children, school can be a safe “practice ground” for the real world where new experiences don’t have to be stressful.

That’s what makes Quest Kids Academy special. The team uses positive reinforcement to reduce or replace disruptive behaviors to gradually introduce new life skills that will help students communicate, socialize and navigate traditional learning or social environments. Since launching in 2009, Quest Kids Academy has served hundreds of children with autism or other developmental disabilities.

Quest Kids Therapy also strives to meet the growing need amongst family for services. We have been offering early-intervention Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy through Quest Kids Therapy for nearly thirty years. ABA is one of the only clinically proven methods to change behavior and we were one of the first providers in the region to offer it to families.

As the need for autism services grows, we’re investing in a renovated campus that will offer new learning and therapy spaces that reflect what we’ve always believed: All kids, of all abilities and needs, deserve to be accepted for who they are and encouraged to achieve their potential. Quest Kids Orlando will be a state-of-the-art education and therapy campus for the Central Florida community.

John Gill is president and CEO at Quest, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that has been providing lifelong services for people with developmental disabilities. Since the humble beginnings of a single location serving eight individuals in 1962, Quest, Inc. now has over 20 locations, serving more than 500 individuals each day in Orlando and Tampa.

Mindful Moments: Finding Joy in the Everyday

Everyday routines work, school pickups, and endless to-do lists keep us on the go. But May gently reminds us to pause and breathe with its blooming flowers and longer days. It’s a perfect time to reset and sprinkle in a little mindfulness for you and your family.

Think of your mind like a garden. It needs care to grow rest, joy, and connections are its sunshine and water. Creating small “Mindful Moments” throughout your day, like stretching in the morning sun or sharing a laugh over coffee, helps you feel grounded, grateful, and present.

Reading a book together, enjoying a hobby, or having a quick kitchen dance party creates simple joys that help us reset. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing ourselves the same kindness we offer others. That alone can be powerful.

Mother’s Day is a beautiful reminder that connection is the greatest gift. This year, try something meaningful: have a backyard picnic, bake something together, or take a memory-filled walk around the block. Get creative: paint flower pots, plant something together, or create a digital photo page about your mom and give it to her as a gift or post it on social media. Time with the ones we love is truly a priceless treasure.

Books are another great way to bond. Cozy up with picture books like The Kissing Hand or Llama Llama Loves His Mama. Older kids might enjoy Charlotte’s Web or Ramona and Her Mother, while tweens and teens can connect over stories like Wonder or Out of My Mind. Even a single chapter can create a shared space filled with warmth and love.

Want to keep the creativity going? Join me this month at the Avalon Arts and Culture Center for a fun, beginner-friendly social

media Class for Adults. Learn how to create social media posts for Facebook and Instagram using Canva perfect for small business owners, community leaders, or anyone ready to grow creatively.

No matter where you are in life, you deserve moments of peace, joy, and connection. This May, make space for the little things that light you up and share them with those you love. Because caring for your mind is one of the most powerful gifts you can give.

Here’s to more mindful moments, more laughter, and more love.

The Hidden Toll: Mental Health Struggles After an Accident

When an accident occurs, the physical injuries are often the most visible, but the emotional and psychological toll can be just as devastating. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression are common mental health struggles faced by accident victims, yet they are often overlooked in the recovery process.

PTSD can develop after a traumatic event, leading to flashbacks, nightmares, and severe emotional distress. Anxiety may manifest as constant worry or fear, particularly in situations that remind the victim of the accident. Depression is also common, as victims may feel overwhelmed by the changes to their life, including physical limitations, financial strain, and a sense of loss.

Personal injury claims can help victims not only recover from physical injuries but also cover the costs of therapy and psychological care. Medical expenses related to mental health treatments, including therapy sessions, counseling, and medications, can be part of the compensation sought in personal injury cases. By addressing both physical and mental health needs, victims can begin to heal holistically.

If you or someone you know is struggling with the mental aftermath of an accident, it’s important to seek help. Personal injury claims are designed to ensure that victims receive the comprehensive care they need to fully recover—mind and body.

DINING

Coming together to create a healthy community

A Look Back at Absolutely Avalon 2025

Absolutely Avalon returned to Downtown Avalon Park on April 12, 2025, bringing more than 11,000 people together for a night of celebration. The community gathered to enjoy music, food, entertainment, and the kind of neighborhood spirit that makes Avalon Park feel like home.

Guests walked the streets lined with local vendors, stopped for bites from a variety of food trucks, and watched cultural performances that showcased the diversity of the area. Families enjoyed the bounce park, live music, and hands-on activities throughout the evening.

A touching moment of the night came during the, Donate Life Pinwheel Presentation, where rainbow pinwheels were placed in Town Park to honor organ donors in Central Florida. It was a quiet but powerful tribute that invited reflection, raised awareness, and reminded everyone of the impact one life can have on another.

Another highlight was the Kids Entrepreneur Market, where young business owners set up their own booths to share products, ideas, and their passion with the community. Their confidence and creativity stood out and brought a fun, personal element to the event.

As the evening came to a close, a laser light show lit up the sky, ending the night with color, music, and a feeling of togetherness.

Thank you to our sponsors for making this year’s event possible: AdventHealth, Avalon Park Group, Leland Management, The Umansky Team, Avalon Park Foundation, Orlando Health, IABA, DC/AC Air and Heat, theJOYfm 98.1, Monarch Children’s Academy, and Soulful Massage Studio.

Absolutely Avalon continues to be a tradition that reflects what makes this community special. To see what is coming up next in Downtown Avalon Park, visit the event calendar here

Being Boosted at East Orlando Gym: Community, Exercise and Mental Health

At East Orlando Gym, we believe in the power of movement to as medicine, nurturing both body and mind. Exercise is one of the simplest— and most powerful—ways to lift your mood and sharpen your mind. Here’s how regular exercise helps with depression, anxiety, stress, focus, and memory, plus why working out together makes it even better.

Battling Depression

At East Orlando Gym, we’ve seen members emerge from workouts with brighter spirits and renewed hope. Aerobic training produces endorphins and serotonin—neurotransmitters that counteract depressive symptoms— which can ease mild to moderate depression almost as well as some medications. Additionally, engaging in regular exercise improves sleep quality and self-esteem, both of which are often disrupted in depression.

Easing Anxiety

Feeling on edge? Physical activity offers a natural remedy. Aerobic exercise decreases activity in the amygdala (the brain’s fear center) and dials down stress hormones like cortisol resulting in lower baseline anxiety levels. Consistent movement also promotes a “mindful flow” state—focusing attention on breath and motion—which interrupts worry loops and cultivates calm.

Stress Relief

Stress tightens muscles and clouds thinking, but sweating it out reverses these effects. Exercise lowers circulating cortisol and adrenaline, helping muscles relax and reducing physical symptoms of stress. Over time, regular workouts recalibrate the stress response system, making everyday pressures easier to manage.

Enhancing Focus & Memory

Did you know your gym session can be a brain booster? Exercise grows new brain cells in the hippocampus—the region responsible for memory and learning—by approximately 2%, translating into sharper recall and learning capacity. Exercise also elevates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that helps neurons connect, making it easier to concentrate and switch between tasks.

The Power of Community at East Orlando Gym

Our group exercise classes offer more than just a workout. They create a supportive network where members hold each other accountable, celebrate milestones, and share challenges. This sense of belonging amplifies motivation, reduces feelings of isolation, and bolsters mental well-being.

Winning Artwork From 40 Orange County Students to be Displayed Throughout Region in 19th Annual Contest from Orlando Utilities Commission

The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One) honored 40 Orange County students for their winning art designs promoting water conservation. Their artwork will now be displayed across the region through events and public displays, and in OUC’s annual conservation calendar.

The Water Color Project – now in its 19th year – teaches Central Florida’s 4th through 12th graders about being good stewards of our planet through water conservation, and tasks them with making artwork about the environment. The contest is divided into two different platforms: The Water Conservation Calendar for elementary school drawings and handpainted rain barrels with eco-friendly themes from middle and high schoolers.

Every year, residents pick the winning designs through online polls. This year’s winners are:

“More than 50,000 Orange County children have taken part in the Water Color Project since it began 19 years ago,” said Linda Ferrone, OUC Chief Customer and Marketing Officer. “Exploring multiple ways to protect natural resources at a young age, and inspiring others to do the same, is pivotal to building a life of sustainability for all of us in the years to come.”

OUC recognized the calendar and rain barrel winners during an awards banquet held at Orlando Family Stage on April 3.

Community members are invited to stop by Reliable Plaza in downtown Orlando to pick up an OUC Water Conservation Calendar for free while supplies last or visit CityArts at 39 S. Magnolia Ave. in Orlando or the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for UCF Celebrate the Arts through April 13 to see the rain barrels before having the opportunity to bid on a favorite when a public auction opens in May.

All rain barrels are entered into a silent auction. Between May – July, OUC employees, OCPS staff and the general public have the chance to bid on their favorite rain barrels. All proceeds raised in the auction directly benefit the respective school’s Visual Arts Department, with funds being divided among the winning schools’ art programs.

Creativity as Care: The Mental Health Benefits of Art and Expression

In a world that often moves too fast and demands too much, carving out time to express ourselves creatively isn’t just a luxury— it’s a necessity. At the Avalon Arts and Culture Center, we’ve long believed in the healing power of the arts. Whether you’re a professional painter, a weekend poet, or someone who just enjoys the occasional craft night, creative expression has been shown to have real, lasting benefits for mental health.

Art as Emotional Release

Art offers a safe outlet for feelings we may struggle to put into words. Through painting, writing, sculpting, or even dance, we gain the ability to process grief, anxiety, joy, or confusion without needing to explain them. For many, creating becomes a form of emotional journaling—one that can promote clarity and catharsis.

Creativity and the Mind-Body Connection

Engaging in artistic activities has been shown to reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, while increasing dopamine, which promotes feelings of pleasure and reward. This makes art not only enjoyable but also a proven tool for stress relief. It slows us down, helps us focus, and brings us into the present moment—much like meditation or exercise.

Building Connection Through Expression

At Avalon Arts and Culture Center, we also emphasize the communal value of the arts. Joining a class, attending an exhibit,

or simply sharing your work invites connection and builds community. For individuals facing isolation or loneliness, these creative connections can be lifelines.

Fostering Creativity in All Ages

From children finding confidence in their first brushstrokes to seniors rediscovering joy through ceramics or journaling, art supports mental wellness at every stage of life. Our programs are designed with this in mind—welcoming everyone, regardless of skill level, to come explore and express freely.

Your Space to Create, Reflect, and Heal

As a hub for creative activity in Avalon Park, the Avalon Arts and Culture Center isn’t just a gallery—it’s a sanctuary for selfdiscovery and healing. We invite you to take a class, visit a gallery, or just stop by and see what’s inspiring others. You never know what form your next expression might take—or how much lighter you might feel afterward.

Make space for creativity. Make space for you.

Six Years of Avalon Park Pickleball

Avalon Park will open 4 pickleball only courts soon in Tanja King Park. Look for details about a tournament and celebration. Here is a look back over the last 6 years.

Six years ago Avalon Park painted green lines on two courts in Tanja King and two in South Village so they could be used for both tennis and pickleball. The first Avalon Park pickleball class was held on May 1, 2019 which was taught by Jeff Wolfberg on the Tanja King courts. The class included Brenda Kolbrich and Ed Lynt, who many of you may know from their community activities. Brenda was instrumental in getting pickleball started in Avalon Park.

In 2019, about 3.5 million people played pickleball regularly. Then covid hit in 2020. People wanted to maintain social distancing but still get outside and socialize with others. The number of pickleball players and pickleball courts skyrocketed. Today America’s fastest growing sport has over 20 million people of all ages who play regularly and 70,000 pickleball courts. This has had a positive impact on revenue from pickleball paddles, balls, court makers, tournaments, etc.

The Pickleheads of Avalon Park Facebook Page has over 200 members. Sheila Harvey and Ed have put on

47 monthly pickleball tournaments in South Village. All ages compete in the tournaments including 16 year old Elliana Harvey who is the best female player at Timber Creek High School. Elliana has won 10 tournaments. Her father Sean and grandmother Sheila compete in the tournaments too.

Today the best and highest paid pickleball player in the world is female : 18 year old Anna Leigh Waters from South Florida earns a salary of $3M per year plus paddle and clothing endorsement money. Try to name another sport where the highest paid athlete is female. Anna Leigh learned the game at 10 years old from her grandparents in Pennsylvania where her parents sent her to live when hurricane Irma hit South Florida in 2017.

The last picture is from our 47th South Village Monthly Pickleball Tournament April 4, 2025.

From the left is Cheryl Beaulieu, Colleen Potter, Sheila Harvey and her granddaughter Elliana Harvey holding prizes they won

Orlando has a pro pickleball team, the Orlando Squeeze, owned by the DeVos Family who also own the Orlando Magic pro basketball team. Pro pickleball tournaments are held every year at USTA in Lake Nona with over 1,000 amateurs and pros competing.

The US Open of Pickleball is held every May in Naples, Florida and attracts over 3,000 amateurs and 100 pros competing and over 50,000 spectators. ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS Sports and the Tennis Channel frequently carry pickleball tournaments. The Tennis Channel created a pickleball channel called pickleballtv.com which streams pickleball tournaments and shows 24 hours a day.

If you haven’t tried pickleball yet, there will be lots of future classes held at the new Tanja King Park pickleball courts in order for you and your family to give this fun, all ages, all skill levels sport a try.

The Power of Mentorship

Mentorship is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. A mentor provides support, guidance, and valuable advice to help you navigate important areas like responsibility, time management, and maturity. They offer strategies, encouragement, and insights to help you set and achieve your goals. Opportunities for mentorship can be found at school, online, or within your community. However, to truly benefit from a mentorship, you must be willing to set goals, receive feedback, take responsibility, and maintain a growth mindset.

Keys to Being a Successful Mentee

1. Set Clear Goals

Having well-defined goals helps you stay focused and motivated. Goals provide a roadmap for your growth and ensure you’re making steady progress.

Tip: Set realistic and achievable goals. Understand the difference between short-term goals (achievable within 90 days) and long-term goals (which take a few years to accomplish).

Tip: Keep your goals visible—place them on your mirror, fridge, or workspace as a daily reminder to stay on track.

2.

Be Open to Feedback and Constructive Criticism

Feedback is essential for growth. Whether positive or constructive, it helps refine your skills and improve your approach. Criticism should always be taken as a learning opportunity rather than a personal attack.

Tip: Don’t take criticism personally—mentors provide feedback to help you improve, not to discourage you.

3. Take Responsibility and Be Proactive

A successful mentee takes initiative. This means actively working toward your goals instead of waiting for others to push you forward.

Tip: Be proactive in your mentorship—ask questions, seek advice, and take ownership of your progress.

4. Maintain a Positive, Growth-Oriented Attitude

Your mindset plays a huge role in the mentorship experience. A positive attitude makes learning easier, strengthens communication with your mentor, and keeps you motivated.

Tip: Stay open to learning new things and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

Mentorship is a two-way street—it requires effort, commitment, and a willingness to grow. With the right approach, it can be a life-changing experience that helps you develop essential skills for your future. Seek out mentors, set clear goals, and embrace the journey of learning and self-improvement!
