advantages of calling both the United States and Switzerland home.
In Switzerland, our national “birthday” is on August 1st, while here in Avalon Park and across the U.S., we celebrate on July 4th.
This double celebration serves as a constant reminder of how blessed we are to live in free countries. Whether in the U.S. or Switzerland, freedom is a foundational value we should never take for granted.
It is amazing to see how similar the US and Switzerland are. Both embrace direct democracy, where the people have “the last say.” In fact, the Swiss political system is what inspired in part the American model. Where the U.S. has the House of Representatives and the Senate, Switzerland has the Nationalrat (House) and the Ständerat (Senate), performing nearly identical roles.
Another similarity is that the US and Switzerland are the only western countries who never had a Monarchy.
Switzerland is home to four official languages—German (or Swiss German), French, Italian, and Romansh. While the average Swiss person may speak more languages, I believe Americans express a stronger sense of visible patriotism. The
Switzerland, the national flag—the white cross on a red background—is typically seen on government buildings and primarily on Independence Day.
Still, I believe both Americans and Swiss are deeply patriotic, grateful, and proud of their countries and heritage.
Fireworks and barbecues are common in each of the 2 countries on Independence Day. In Switzerland each Village generally starts its celebration with a speech of its mayor or other dignity. And sometimes those speeches have a political agenda, sometimes they are funny, but always deeply patriotic.
As I look forward to two meaningful celebrations this summer, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to call both countries home.
Happy Independence Day to America this month—and to Switzerland next month. May both celebrations continue to reflect the freedoms and values we hold dear.
From the Desk of Commissioner
Maribel Gomez Cordero
Happy July!
Independence Day, observed on July 4th, honors the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the foundational ideals it symbolizes. This year marks the 249th anniversary of that historic moment, which laid the groundwork for a nation rooted in Liberty, Freedom, and Justice for all. Though nearly two and a half centuries have passed, our dedication to these guiding principles remains strong. Americans celebrate this occasion with parades, fireworks, and community events, taking time to remember the sacrifices that secured our independence and to recognize the continued work needed to preserve the freedoms envisioned by our founding leaders.
Hurricane Season is underway, and while we are still somewhat early in the season, it’s important to stay prepared as the risk of storms will continue to increase over the coming months. Stay informed on safety precautions and sandbag pickup locations by signing up for updates at OCAlert.net. For

5 Patriotic Ways to Decorate Your Apartment This 4th of July at The Flats at Avalon Park Orlando
There’s nothing more American than celebrating the 4th of July surrounded by community, good vibes, and fireworks—and when you live at The Flats at Avalon Park Orlando, you’re at the heart of it all. With the celebration happening right outside your door, it’s the perfect excuse to bring some red, white, and blue into your home. Whether you’re hosting friends or just soaking up the patriotic spirit, here are five simple, fun, and festive ways to decorate your apartment this Independence Day.
1. Create a Flag-Inspired Tablescape
Transform your dining or coffee table into a tribute to the stars and stripes. Think navy blue table runners, red plates, and white napkins tied with miniature flags. Add a mason jar centerpiece filled with fresh flowers in patriotic hues—or go full DIY with sparkler-shaped decorations made from paper and ribbon.
2. Hang a Red, White & Blue Wreath
A wreath isn’t just for the holidays—it’s a perfect way to add a patriotic pop to your front door. Choose one made of faux flowers, clothespins, or even ribbons. It’s a small touch that sets a celebratory tone the moment you step inside your apartment.
3. Light Up Your Balcony
If you have a balcony at The Flats, make it sparkle! Add red, white, and blue string lights, hang small American flags along the railing, or place lanterns with LED candles for a cozy evening glow. Bonus: you’ll be perfectly set up to watch the fireworks display right from your apartment!
4. Add a Star-Spangled Wall Accent Peel-and-stick wall decals are renter-friendly and instantly
transform a space. Go for a star pattern behind your couch or in the hallway, or frame printable patriotic quotes to hang on your wall. This is an easy way to bring the theme into your home without committing to anything permanent.
5. Bring in Festive Fabrics
Swap out your throw pillows and blankets for ones in bold patriotic patterns—think stripes, stars, and checkered reds. These accents instantly change the mood and make your space feel ready for the holiday. And when the party’s over, they’re easy to pack away until next year!
Come for the Decor, Stay for the Celebration
When you live at The Flats at Avalon Park Orlando, your home isn’t just decorated for the 4th—you’re part of a community that lives and breathes it. LIVE
Decades of the Fourth: How Seniors Keep Independence Day Alive
Every time July rolls around, something stirs beneath the surface of routine life. Flags flutter. Old songs return to the air. But for many older Americans, the Fourth isn’t just a day off or a barbecue invite — it’s a moment suspended between memory and meaning. They’ve watched towns change, technologies evolve, families grow and scatter. And still, some traditions hold. This article honors the layered experience of Independence Day through the lived lens of our seniors — not as nostalgia, but as living legacy.
Culinary Traditions Passed Down
What’s a celebration without a taste that pulls you back in time?
Many older adults hold family recipes like sacred texts — corn casseroles, baked beans with a twist, cakes iced in thick flag patterns. These aren’t just dishes. They’re edible memory. Recipes scribbled on notecards in fading ink become ritual, something tangible to pass down when time feels slippery. This year, consider making room at the table for one of those classic Independence Day recipes — and let a senior family member walk you through the story behind it. It’s not about getting it perfect. It’s about remembering who taught you to stir.
Decorating with Red, White, and Blue
Decorating isn’t frivolous — it’s expression. Seniors often bring a gentle intentionality to how they dress up a space for the Fourth: buntings that have been stored for decades, handmade table runners, mason jars turned lanterns. Each item has a story — where it came from, when it was last used, who commented on it. They know the importance of inviting beauty into the everyday. Even modest environments can be transformed with festive home decorations for seniors, reminding everyone that pride doesn’t require perfection. It just requires presence.
Music and Memories
Cue up any patriotic song from the ‘40s and you’ll watch older eyes glisten just a bit. Not because of some forced patriotism, but because music activates timelines. They remember who they were when “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” hit the airwaves. Who they danced with. What the world asked of them. Music collapses time. Playing patriotic songs from the 1940s doesn’t just set the mood —
it extends an invitation to remember, to laugh, to hum along. And maybe to teach younger generations what the lyrics meant when times were leaner and hopes were heavier.
Photo Albums and Tangible Time Travel
There’s something about flipping through an old photo album that makes time feel physical. Seniors often keep stacks of these, thick with yellowing snapshots and handwritten captions. Each image is a portal: a child in a sunhat, a spouse in uniform, a picnic from 1973 where someone burned the hot dogs. Unlike digital galleries that scroll past in a blur, these pages demand patience — and reward it with presence. Sitting down with an elder and letting them narrate the who, what, and where is more than an activity; it’s a ritual of relational glue. And in a world of speed, those pauses feel sacred.
Fireworks and Safe Celebrations
No tradition conjures excitement like fireworks — but for seniors, the sparkle should never come with risk. Loud booms can be unsettling. Crowds can be overwhelming. Still, the sky lighting up on the Fourth matters, symbolically and emotionally. For those who can’t get to a display, it’s worth exploring quieter, more controlled options. Sparklers in the backyard, projected shows, or enjoying fireworks safely at home with friends and family allow for celebration without compromise. After all, the glow we’re after isn’t just in the sky — it’s in the connection.
Fourth of July isn’t just about marking independence. It’s about seeing the country through the eyes of those who’ve seen it change — those who’ve fought wars, raised families, witnessed civil shifts, and made meals with the same care every year. Seniors don’t just remember the past — they shape how we inherit it. And honoring their stories, songs, recipes, and reflections helps all of us stand a little taller under the fireworks. Let’s celebrate with them, not just near them. Because they’ve carried more than flags — they’ve carried meaning.

Volunteering: The East Orlando Youth Advisory Board
Volunteering is an amazing way for teens to gain experience, learn new skills, and make a real impact in their community. The question is, how do you get started?
If you’re a teen looking to get involved, the first step is finding something that interests you. Think about what you enjoy. Is it helping animals, protecting the environment, working with kids, or supporting the elderly? Even if you’re not sure yet, consider your strengths. If you love writing, art, teaching, or organizing, you can find many different opportunities that match your talents.
Once you have an idea of what you want to do, start looking for places where you can help. Community centers often have programs specifically for teens, and nonprofit organizations, food banks, shelters, and environmental groups are always looking for volunteers. Some hospitals and libraries offer teen-friendly roles, like assisting with events or reading programs. Schools can also be a great resource, as they may have connections with local groups in need of volunteers. If you’re not sure where to start, online platforms like VolunteerMatch can help you find both virtual and local opportunities.
Don’t forget: Before you sign up, make sure to check if you need parental approval. Some organizations require a parent’s consent, especially if the role involves working with certain groups or handling specific responsibilities.
Once you have permission, reach out to the organization. Whether you call or send an email, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and ask about their volunteer programs for teens.
In some cases, you may need to complete paperwork, like a permission slip or reference form. Having everything prepared ahead of time will make the process smoother and help you start as soon as possible. Once you’re ready to begin, think about your schedule and how much time you can commit. Whether it’s a weekly shift or a one-time event, reliability is important. Showing up consistently helps you build trust with the organization and gain valuable experience.
Volunteering might involve tasks you weren’t expecting, but being open to new experiences is part of the journey. Every role, big or small, contributes to the cause and helps you develop useful skills. Many schools count community service hours toward graduation, and volunteering looks great on college applications and resumes. It’s also a great way to meet new people, expand your network, and gain confidence in your abilities.
Getting involved in volunteering doesn’t have to be a solo job; you can always encourage your friends to join you. Having someone with you makes the experience more enjoyable and creates a bigger impact. The more people who get involved, the greater the difference you can make together.

Introduction to Sand Tray Therapy - Ellie Mental Health
By Sean McLean
Sand tray therapy is a therapeutic tool that assists a client with expressing themselves using figurines to “build a world” in the sand. The psychology of sand tray therapy is that it is subconscious work – the figurines are symbols, and the world the client builds is a reflection of their mind. The figurines and the world represent memories, frustrations, emotions, morals, values, goals, thoughts, and ideas. This allows the therapist and the client to gain significant insight. This is all done in sand because sand is sensory – the touch of sand activates our minds, bringing up memories and emotions because of the soothing and calming touch.
Sand tray therapy provides a medium in which the client isn’t forced to talk about themselves and their issues, but rather, express themselves with the world that they build. The sand tray therapist is trained to ask about the world, allowing the client to separate their stressors from themselves, and discuss the world built. Thus, sand tray is notably effective for trauma, as well as for clients with autism, and children, as they can each express themselves through this medium, rather than through talk therapy.
An important distinction is that sand tray therapy and sand play therapy are not the same. Sand play is a type of play therapy, in which the child plays with the sand, and sometimes water, along with toys and figurines, freely expressing themselves, with the play therapist assisting with their development of boundaries, insight, and processing emotions.
Sand tray therapy can be for all ages, though typically children age 7 and up, as it requires the capability of “building a world” within the limits of the sand tray, and includes the therapist asking questions and discussing the world built, as the analysis of the world is a strong component for sand tray.
Sand tray therapy is an excellent medium and therapeutic tool to assist with processing emotions, healing from trauma and grief, understanding yourself and world view, and be a creative experience.
For more information on whether Sand Tray Therapy is a good tool for you or your loved one, please contact Sean McLean, LMHC at Ellie Mental Health: 407-326-3432.

Fireworks & Festivities: Staying Safe on the Fourth of July
The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate with fireworks, parades, and gatherings, but it also brings safety risks. From fireworks accidents to crowd-related injuries, the holiday can lead to unexpected harm. By taking precautions and understanding your legal rights, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.
Fireworks are a highlight of the holiday, but they also pose significant risks. Injuries such as burns, eye injuries, or even more severe trauma can occur, especially if fireworks are not handled properly. It’s essential to follow safety guidelines, keep
a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks. If you’re attending a public event, ensure it’s being managed by licensed professionals to minimize risk.
Holiday gatherings and parades can also lead to accidents. If a guest or participant is injured due to negligence—such as unsafe conditions at a venue, poorly managed fireworks displays, or lack of proper crowd control—victims may be entitled to compensation. Hosts and event organizers have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for all attendees, and if negligence leads to injury, personal injury claims can help recover medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
By being mindful of safety and understanding legal protections, you can enjoy a fun and safe Fourth of July.
Avalon Mail Center: 4th of July in Avalon Park
By Angie Laucirica, Anna Elahi
Every year, the 4th of July reminds us what it really means to live in the U.S.- freedom, community, and a whole lot of fireworks. It’s not just a day off or an excuse to eat way too many hot dogs. It’s a chance to pause and appreciate the history behind everything we sometimes take for granted.
On July 4th, 1776, a bold dream took shape - a dream of independence, of a nation built on the principles of liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. Every year since, Americans have come together to celebrate not only our history but also the everyday freedoms we enjoy. From parades to backyard cookouts, from red, white, and blue face paint to sparklers in the night sky - it’s a day that unites us in joy and gratitude.
Here in Avalon Park, that feeling is alive and well. Whether you’re heading to a local BBQ,
watching the fireworks downtown, or just spending time with people you care about, this community has a way of making the 4th feel personal while reminding everyone the true meaning behind it all.
And while it might not seem super exciting, your local post office has always quietly been a part of that bigger picture. We help people stay connected - with birthday cards, letters to loved ones, care packages, and even just a friendly face behind the counter. We’ve been here through holidays, storms, and everything in between.
So as you celebrate this 4th of July, remember what it’s really about - and if you’re ever nearby, stop by at Avalon Mail Center 3564 Avalon Park E Blvd Ste 1 and say hi. We’ll be here, doing what we always do - serving this amazing community, one piece of mail at a time.

The Orange County Asian Committee selected the elementary schooler’s artwork, along with 38 other pieces for the exhibition, out of more than 200 contest submissions from local artists.
Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce – Avalon Lead Group: Building Community and Connection
The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce Avalon Lead Group is proud to celebrate the success of our most recent in-person meeting at Café Coquí. With local entrepreneurs gathered in one vibrant space, the energy was high, the connections were meaningful, and the momentum continues to grow.
Since launching in April 2025, our group has generated over $300,000 in sales, directly impacting our local economy and reinforcing the power of collaboration. We are more than a networking group—we are a community of professionals committed to supporting each other’s growth while uplifting the broader business landscape in Avalon Park and beyond.
We invite all local entrepreneurs, small business owners, and professionals to join us at our next in-person meeting on Wednesday, July 9th at 6:30 PM at Café Coquí. Come ready to connect, collaborate, and be part of a movement that’s making a difference.
