In Every Story, There’s Strength: Supporting Mental Wellness in Avalon Park Wesley Chapel

May is recognized nationwide as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to elevate conversations around emotional well-being and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. This year, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) leads with the theme: “In Every Story, There’s Strength.” It is a reminder that sharing our experiences—whether through words, connection, or community—can offer comfort, courage, and support to others on similar journeys.

In Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, that spirit of community and support is built into the very foundation of how the neighborhood is designed. With an emphasis on live, learn, work, and play, Avalon Park fosters an environment where residents do not have to look far to find moments of balance and belonging—whether it is a walkable downtown, family-focused events, or a local business that brings people together.

Throughout the month of May, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel will host activities and celebrate milestones that contribute to a sense of community connection and well-being. The Downtown Farmers Market returns on May 3rd and 17th, featuring fresh finds, small business vendors, and live music in the heart of the community. As part of the May 3rd market, Avalon Park will also host a Dog Mom’s Day Giveaway in partnership with Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming in Downtown Avalon Park. The first 25 dog moms to visit the store during the market will receive a free treat for their pup and a small gift for themselves.

This month also marks exciting progress in Downtown Avalon Park Wesley Chapel’s growth. Rudraksh Indian Cuisine is now officially open, offering residents authentic Indian flavors in a warm and welcoming

setting at 4424 Friendly Way, Suite 115. In the coming weeks, the highly anticipated Tallo Restaurant and Bar will also open its doors, further enhancing the culinary and cultural richness of the community.

These activations and openings reflect a larger vision: to create a place where people can feel connected, supported, and uplifted. Whether through a shared meal, a walk through the market, or participation in a neighborhood event, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel offers daily opportunities to prioritize not just physical health, but mental and emotional wellness as well.

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, let us remember that there is power in our personal experiences and strength in our shared stories. In Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, wellness begins with community— and every story matters.

Building a Healthier Community, Together

health assessment conducted several years ago by AdventHealth in partnership with Avalon Park Group. We set out to better understand what medical resources were most needed in Avalon Park to achieve our shared vision of becoming Central Florida’s healthiest community.

What stood out clearly then—and remains true today— is the overwhelming need for greater access to mental health services. The results pointed not just to a lack of providers, but to a deeper truth: mental health is a foundation for strong, resilient communities, and it is often the area that needs the most support.

Although we at Avalon Park Group are not mental health professionals, my wife Jill—who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology—has often reminded me of the timeless principle: mens sana in corpore sano—a healthy mind in a healthy body. It is a concept we believe in deeply as we plan and build our communities.

At Avalon Park, we understand that the design of a neighborhood can have a strong impact on the mental well-being of the residents that live there. That is why we focus not only on physical infrastructure but also on emotional and social infrastructure. When neighbors know each other, when families feel safe, and when people feel connected, communities thrive. That sense of belonging can be one of the most powerful protectors of mental health.

We also believe in offering a wide variety of outlets for the mind, body, and spirit. Every person’s path to well-being looks a little different, so our goal is to create an environment that supports all of them. For the body there are recreational spaces, ISI Elite

daily life is all within reach—from medical care and schools to places for spiritual growth and community connection. This walkable, integrated design helps reduce stress, increase access to care, and foster a stronger, more supportive environment.

Over the past year, we have continued to expand our mental health support efforts—welcoming new providers and forming partnerships with organizations dedicated to emotional well-being. We are also increasing programs that offer safe and supportive spaces for connection and self-expression, including youth mentorship, art therapy, and educational workshops. This month, we are pleased to introduce a new resource from a provider in our Avalon Park Orlando Community, Ellie Mental Health, who will be sharing a series of helpful tools and information throughout May, shaped directly by feedback gathered through a community survey.

I often think back to a service I attended in Bithlo led by our long-time friend, Pastor Dale Brooks. He reminded us all that while there are many practical needs—clean water, food, and shelter—the spiritual and emotional needs of a community are just as urgent. Faith, purpose, and service can be healing forces.

In that spirit, I encourage you to give back this month. Acts of service—whether volunteering at a local school, helping a neighbor, or supporting a local nonprofit—are powerful tools for cultivating positive mental health. When we give, we connect. And when we connect, we strengthen the very fabric of our community.

With the focus on mental health in the May, I challenge us all to recommit to building a community where well-being-in all its forms-is within reach for everyone. Together, we can shape a place where the mind, body, and spirit are not just cared for—but truly thrive. PUBLISHER Beat

Turn Awareness into Action

In Partnership with Avalon Park Orlando and Ellie Mental Health

Kicking off Mental Health Month:

As we enter May, Ellie Mental Health is excited to join millions across the nation in recognizing Mental Health Month. This year’s theme, “Turn Awareness into Action” couldn’t be more timely or important.

Did you know that 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health condition in any given year? Mental Health affects us all, and its critical that we move beyond awareness to take meaningful steps for our well-being and that of our community.

This May, we invite you to join us in taking action:

Start with Self Care: explore practices that work for you – whether that’s meditation, exercise, or creative pursuits.

Engage Your Community: Check in on friends, family, and neighbors--- a simple “How are you really doing?” can make a world of a difference.

Share your story – break down stigma through the power of personal experiences in your conversations.

Schedule a complimentary 15 minute consult with our Clinic Director to see how we can support your mental health.

This Mental Health Month, let’s not just talk about mental health—let’s take action. Whether it’s a small step for yourself or a giant leap for your community, every action counts.

On Saturday, April 19th, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel hosted its inaugural Plein Air Paint-Out during the Absolutely Avalon community celebration. This live outdoor painting experience, held in partnership with the Zephyrhills Art Club, invited artists of all skill levels to set up their easels and capture the vibrancy of the Downtown district in real time. More than 15 artists participated, creating original works that reflected the unique character of Avalon Park through a variety of styles and mediums.

Of those registered, 10 artists submitted finished pieces for display. Beginning May 15th, their work will be exhibited in the lobby and welcome center of The Flats at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy a rotating collection of locally inspired art.

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel Leads Pasco County with First Symplicity Procedure

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel is proud to announce its groundbreaking achievement as the first hospital in Pasco County to perform a new, minimally invasive renal denervation (RDN) procedure. This innovative treatment provides hope for patients with high blood pressure who have not found relief through lifestyle changes or medication.

The procedure, known as Symplicity, from Medtronic targets overactive nerves near the kidneys, a common contributor to hypertension. Approved by the FDA in November 2023, Symplicity is set to transform care for patients struggling with uncontrolled blood pressure, ultimately improving their quality of life.

Since the technology arrived at AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, interventional cardiologists Hadi Mahmaljy, MD, and Ketul Chauhan, MD, have performed the procedure.

“Hypertension continues to be a major health challenge globally, impacting millions of lives daily,” said Dr. Mahmaljy. “Hypertension may not necessarily present with symptoms but does have serious long-term implications. The Symplicity procedure offers an innovative, always-active solution without the need for a permanent implant, helping patients lower their blood pressure, keep their heart healthy and reclaim peace of mind.”

High blood pressure is the single largest contributor to death

globally, impacting nearly 50 percent of U.S. adults. Alarmingly, about 80 percent of those who are aware of their condition fail to keep it under control. This innovative approach offers hope to those living with chronic hypertension.

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel continues to lead the way in delivering advanced care, ensuring that Pasco County residents have access to the latest medical breakthroughs. To learn more about AdventHealth Wesley Chapel’s cardiology team, click here.
