Siddamma, an Asha-Fellow, is being supported by Asha-Austin. She has fought for rights of the Irula tribe in Southern India, freeing bonded laborers, empowering them to build their own community and set up schools for their children.

Payment was taken ahead of time in previous years, but this year, clients are supposed to make the payment at the time of pickup depending upon the weight of the

As a Mohiniyattam enthusiast and student, I have always wanted to watch my guru, Kalasree Dr. Sunanda Nair’s performance. It happened on 12th May 2017 with three different stories. when she transformed herself into the most powerful Amba! A character from the Mahabharata.

All the attention of the audience was on her when she depicting Amba’s reaction after her abduction.

A powerful moment in the act was when Amba realized that there is no way she can go back to her wedding!

The way dancer depicted that scene with the sudden drop of her shoulders and utter disappointment on her face, everyone of us felt Amba’s helplessness!

Then comes Shikhandi, a transgender warrior of the epic Mahabharata! The emotions were oozing out of the dancer like nectar!

It’s obvious that a steadfast dancer of her caliber can depict the emotions of anyone! When his arrow

got released from the bow with a thud towards Bhishma, performer

took everyone to another level of ecstasy! Her graceful performance

made us feel like we are a part of her story!

Oru magal, is a short depiction of mother-daughter relationship. The performance commenced with the show of pure love and joy of a mother watching her little girl in the cradle with a sweet lullaby music in the background and changed its tone according to the situation.

A beautiful moment came when the mother used a blind fold to cover her eye and let the little one hide. While performing a dance like Mohiniyattam where the most significant, expressive part of body is eye, still she closed her eye and started dancing!

When the little girl becomes teenager and having attachment with a boy, performer’s subtle moves changed the setting to a mom’s fear about her daughter’s safety and life was astonishing. Most of our eyes were filled with tears.

Bhavayami Raghuramam is a beautiful rendition by Dr.Sunanda Nair composed by Maharaja Swathi Thirunnal depicting the story of Ramayana. When she was performing different characters in Ramayana, her actions, moves,

looks, everything made us feel like there is no dancer just the characters. The most difficult character among all is ‘Shoorpanaka’ who is an ugly demon in the epic. Sringara is the most predominant Bhava in Mohiniyattam! But to present a Sringara Bhava of an ugly demon is not that easy.

The performer tugged the audience through Sita swayamvar, vanavasa, Rama-Ravana war, Lanka dahanam and finished her two hour enchanting performance with Sree Rama pattabhishekam!!

If the performer can take you through the emotions of the story till the end without losing your attention for a second that is masterpiece.

I should also give credits to the extremely talented musicians! Kalasree Kalamandalam Gireesan for Vocal rendition, Janardhana Rao on Mridhangam, Kalasree G S Rajan on Flute, and Swami Ananda Nadayogi on Violin gave the performance a strong backup!

Anyone who has seen her performance will not deny the fact that she is a strong pillar of the art form and a true cultural ambassador.

On a Thursday, when the two were having lunch and missing the good coffee, the friends day-dreamed about a tea truck parked outside where they could just have the perfectly brewed tea.

Both looked at each other and sat up! Tea truck was a great idea and both grabbed their laptops to immediately start googling what to do. They hashed out the plan and made a website right there and then!

Thus came into being the Austin Chaiwala that started as a tea catering service for offices and special events.

It was almost like ‘ghar ki baat’ [being at home], the ultimate aim of every restaurant to give a home feeling to what is served outside.

Masala Chai, Karak Chai, Doodh Patti and Desi coffee were all authentic. One could not help, but wonder how so much emphasis is being given to details. Perhaps that is why in such a short span of time Zaidi and Malik have zoomed past many other food trucks. They are determined to make it work and are trying their best to pay off the loan they took to buy the trailer.

We sat on chairs surrounding a table under a sun umbrella right by the truck. Zaidi said restrooms were available in Rosedale Market.

He praised masala fries that they have added to the menu. “Most of our clients are from Pakistan, India and Bengal with 10 to 20% locals,” said Zaidi although on this particular day everyone who came was just local. “Once a musician teacher from Seattle made a song about the tea,” beamed Zaidi as he shared the #austinchaiwala instagram post of the bearded white musician playing his guitar.

Flag Hoisting Ceremony At Consulate General Of Pakistan In Houston Madam Aisha Farooqi, the consular general of Pakistan in Houston hoisted the flag amid fanfare and Quran recitation with guests from Houston and beyond.

A group of friends from the Austin community were also invited and were dressed in green and white colors of the flag.

Proceeding inside to the auditorium style setting, the consular read out statements from Pakistani Prime minister Shahid Khakaan Abbasi and the President Mamnoon Husain.

This followed her own speech where she talked about her last one year in Houston and added that the consulate would remain open on last Saturdays osf every month from now onwards.

On this auspicious occasion, Austin Arts and Drama Initiative (AADI) presented an oil painting to the Houston consulate on behalf of the Austin Community and invited the Houston residents to look at ACL and SXSW as the festivals to attend in their Austin visits.

According to NASA, on April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will stretch diagonally across the U.S. from Texas through the Northeast U.S. Austin will fall in it’s path.

One can only imagine a repetition of the Eclipse parties all across the city as just as they happened this time.

SAIVA in the Community SAIVA had the opportunity to participate in the Aging and Disability Resource Center fair in the middle of August at the JJ Pickle Research Center. The educational workshop consisted of building community partners and exploring advocacy as a tool to build capacity to better serve older individuals and individuals with disabilities. It was amazing to see the different organizations changing the community. SAIVA’s unique perspective of putting a positive twist on aging and mission to better serve the community and strengthen intergenerational bonds really shined through.

Christ The Redeemer Statue (Rio De Janeiro)

Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with the French engineer Albert Caquot.

Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida fashioned the face. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the statue is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, excluding its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide.

The statue weighs 635 metric tons (625 long, 700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio. A symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.

Vincentian priest, Pedro Maria Boss, first suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado in the mid 1850s to honor Princess Isabel, princess regent of Brazil and the daughter of Emperor Pedro II, however the project died due to lack of support.

In 1889 the country became a republic, and due to the separation of church and state, the idea of the statue was dismissed.

The Catholic Circle[clarification needed] of Rio made a second proposal for a landmark statue on the mountain in 1920. The group organized an event called Semana do Monumento (“Monument Week”) to attract donations and collect signatures to support the building of the statue.

What motivated the organization was what they perceived as ‘Godlessness’ in the society at the time.

The donations came mostly from Brazilian Catholics. The designs considered for the “Statue of the Christ” included a representation of the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus with a globe in his hands, and a pedestal symbolizing the world.

In 1922, Landowski commissioned fellow Parisian Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida, who studied sculpture at the Fine Arts Conservatory in Bucharest and in Italy.

Leonida’s portrayal of Christ’s face made him famous.

A group of engineers and technicians studied Landowski’s submissions and felt building the structure of reinforced concrete (designed

by Albert Caquot) instead of steel was more suitable for the crossshaped statue.

The outer layers are soapstone, chosen for its enduring qualities and ease of use. Construction took nine years, from 1922 to 1931 and cost the equivalent of US$250,000 (equivalent to $3,400,000 in 2016) and the monument opened on October 12, 1931.

During the opening ceremony, the statue was to be lit by a battery of floodlights turned on remotely

Lightning struck the statue during a violent thunderstorm on February 10, 2008, causing some damage to the fingers, head and eyebrows. The Rio de Janeiro state government initiated a restoration effort to replace some of the outer soapstone layers and repair the lightning rods on the statue. Lightning damaged it again, on January 17, 2014, dislodging a finger on the right hand.

In 2010, a massive restoration of the statue began. Work included cleaning, replacing the mortar and soapstone on the exterior, restoring iron in the internal structure, and waterproofing the monument.

Vandals attacked the statue during renovation, spraying paint along the arm. Mayor Eduardo Paes called the act “a crime against the nation”. The culprits later apologized and presented themselves to the police.

In 2015 two Russian and Ukrainian urban explorers, Vadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov from Ontheroofs, climbed the statue with captured video footage and photos.

The Pot of the Wit

Once Emperor Akbar became very angry at his favorite minister

Birbal. He asked Birbal to leave the kingdom and go away.

Accepting the command of the Emperor, Birbal left the kingdom and started working in a farmer’s farm in an unknown village far away under a different identity.

As months passed, Akbar started to miss Birbal. He was struggling to solve many issues in the empire without Birbal’s advice. He regretted a decision, asking Birbal to leave the empire in anger.

So Akbar sent his soldiers to find Birbal, but they failed to find him.

No one knew where Birbal was.

Akbar finally found a trick.

He sent a message to the head of every village to send a pot full of the wit to the Emperor.

If the pot full of wit can not be sent, fill the pot with diamonds and jewels.

This message also reached Birbal, who lived in one of the villages.

The people of the village got together.

Birbal who was sitting among the villagers said, “Give me the pot, I will fill the wit in one month’s end”.

Everyone trusted Birbal and agreed to give him a chance. They still didn’t know his identity.

Birbal took the pot with him and went back to the farm. He had planted watermelons on his farm.

He selected a small watermelon and without cutting it from the plant, he put that in the pot. He started looking after it by providing water and fertilizer regularly.

Within a few days, the watermelon grew into a pot so much that it was impossible to get it out of the pot.

Soon, the watermelon reached to the same size as the pot from inside.

Birbal then cut the watermelon from the vine and separated it with the pot.

Later, he sent a pot to Emperor Akbar with a message that “Please remove the wit without cutting it from the pot and without breaking the pot”.

All started talking about what to do now? The wit is not a thing, which can be filled in the pot.

Akbar watched the watermelon in the pot and realized that this can only be Birbal’s Work. Akbar himself came to the village, took Birbal back with him.

How will we arrange for diamonds and jewels to fill the pot and send to the Emperor?

Moral: Don’t hasten the decision.

Think hard to find a solution for the strangest situations.

In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymous with “Rama Lila” and Dussehra that celebrates the battle and victory of god Rama over the demon king Ravana. In southern states, the victory of different goddesses, of Rama or Saraswati is celebrated. In all cases, the common theme is the battle and victory of Good over Evil based on a regionally famous epic or legend such as the Ramayana or the Devi Mahatmya.

Celebrations include stage decorations, recital of the legend, enacting of the story, and chanting of the scriptures of Hinduism. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture.

On the final day, called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as river and ocean, or alternatively the statue symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil’s destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami or Dussehra.

In the past, Shakta Hindus used to recite Durga’s legends during the Chaitra Navaratri, but this practice around the spring equinox has been declining. For most contemporary Hindus, it is the Navaratri around the autumn equinox that is the major festival and the one observed. To Bengali Hindus and to Shakta Hindus outside of eastern and northeastern states of India, the term Navaratri implies Durga Puja in the warrior goddess aspect of Devi.

In other traditions of Hinduism, the term Navaratri implies something else or the celebration of Hindu goddess but in her more peaceful forms such as Saraswati – the Hindu goddess of knowledge, learning, music and other arts. In Nepal, Navaratri is called Dasain, and is a major annual homecoming and family event that celebrates the bonds between elders and youngsters with Tika Puja, as well as across family and community members.

Eid sacrifice may take place until sunset on the 13th day of Dhu alHijjah. The days of Eid have been singled out in the Hadith as “days of remembrance” and considered the holiest days in the Islamic Calendar. The takbir (days) of Tashriq are from the Maghrib prayer of the 29th of Dhul-Qadah up to the Maghrib prayer of the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah (thirteen days and nights).

It includes Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummati kali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and other celebrations. It is the New Year day for Malayali Hindus.

Onam is the official state festival of Kerala with public holidays that start four days from Onam Eve (Uthradom). It is celebrated by Malayali diaspora around the world. Though a Hindu festival, non-Hindu communities of Kerala participate in Onam celebrations considering it as a cultural festival. However, some non-Hindus in Kerala denounce its celebration as a cultural event because they consider it as a religious festival.

According to the Hindu mythology, Mahabali was the great great grandson of a Brahmin sage, Kashyapa and grandson of Prahlada. This links it to the Puranic mythology of Prahlada of Holika fame in Hinduism, who is the son of demon dictator Hiranyakashyap. Prahlada, despite being born to a demonic Asura father who hated Vishnu, rebelled against his father’s persecution of people and worshipped Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap tries to kill his son Prahlada, but is slained

Prahlada’s grandson Mahabali came to power by defeating the gods (Devas), and taking over the three worlds. According to Vaishnavism mythology, the defeated Devas approached Vishnu for help in their battle with Mahabali. Vishnu refused to join the gods in violence against Mahabali, because Mahabali was a good ruler and his own devotee. He, instead, decided to test Mahabali’s devotion at an opportune moment. Mahabali, after his victory over the gods, declared that he will perform Yajna (homa sacrifices) and grant anyone any request during the Yajna. Vishnu took the avatar of a dwarf boy called Vamana and approached Mahabali. The king offered anything to the boy – gold, cows, elephants, villages, food, whatever he wished.

The boy said that one must not seek more than one needs, and all he needs is the property right over a piece of land that measures “three paces”. Mahabali agreed.

The Vamana grew and covered everything Mahabali ruled over in just two paces. For the third pace, Mahabali offered himself, an act which Vishnu accepted as evidence of Mahabali’s devotion. Vishnu granted him a boon, by which Mahabali could visit again, once every year, the lands and people he previously ruled. This revisit marks the festival of Onam, as reminder of the virtuous rule and his humility in keeping his promise before Vishnu. The last day of Mahabali’s stay is remembered with a nine course vegetarian Onasadya feast.

However, it also goes overboard at times. For instance, when Ajith is being chased on the streets of Serbia, Kajal calls and asks him if he wants to listen to their baby’s heartbeat. Seriously? It is silly scenes such as these that spoil the sporadic thrills the film has to offer.

Ajith’s physical transformation deserves special praise, and he has worked really hard, despite shooting in extreme climatic conditions.

He carries the film on his shoulders and turns in a never seen before kind of performance.

India’s Oldest Cinematographer Ramananda Sengupta Passes Away

Country’s oldest cinematographer Ramanda Sengupta, who worked with legends like Jean Renoir, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, died

in Kolkata on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement.

Born on May 8, 1916 in Dhaka, Sengupta studied in Santiniketan in his formative years and got his first break in 1938 when he joined

Film Corporation of India in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as an assistant cameraman. His first film as a full-time cinematographer was in

‘Purbaraag’ directed by Ardhendu Mukherjee in 1946.

Two years later, French Adirector Jean Renoir came to Kolkata to shoot The River (Le Fleuve, released in 1951), and Sengupta joined him initially as a clapper boy, but ended up as the operat-

ing cameraman while the auteur’s nephew Claude Renoir was director of photography.

He worked with Ritwik Ghatak on his debut film Nagarik, that was completed in 1952, but released a quarter century later in 1977 after the film maker’s death. In 1955, when Mrinal Sen made his debut film Raat Bhore, he chose Sengupta as his cinematographer.

Sengupta worked behind the camera in over 70 films, including landmark ones like Shilpi, Nishithe, Bindur Chhele, Personal Assistant, Headmaster and Teen Bhubaner Pare. Sengupta was also a founding member of the Technicians’ Studio in South Kolkata’s Tollygunge.

Condoling Sengupta’s demise, the chief minister said his death has caused an irrepairable loss to the world of films. “I pray that his soul rest in peace. I extend my sympathies to his bereaved family,” said Banerjee.

Of course, much of it was owing to the success of Salman Khan’s Sultan.

In 2017, the total spent on the top 10 films was Rs 714 crore (Rs 7.14 billion), but the return shrunk, with no blockbusters.

The only high point was the unprecedented success of Baahubali 2 that rustled up a new record of Rs 510 crore (Rs 5.10 billion) in the domestic NBOC -- constituting 40 per cent of the total collections for Hindi films in this period.

If the movie is considered in the top 10 earners -- although it was a Telugu film produced in Hyderabad and not a Bollywood production -the NBOC growth would go up by 26 per cent.

That’s how it works.” The story of ‘Baadshaho’ revolves around a royal family of Rajasthan and how their property gets looted after the

declaration of Emergency.

As the film features Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Vidyut Jammwal, Luthria believes that casting different stars create better interest about the film among the audience.

Talking about his equation with his actors, especially with Ajay, he said, “I think with any individual I meet, the first 10 minutes of our conversation defines our equation - either you get along, bond over something, or you don’t. with Ajay, that’s what happens, even though we do not talk to each other every day, we know we are bonded.

So you don’t work on developing an equation, it happens naturally.”

NATAYANA KATHA – A DIVINE EXPERIENCE Nārāyaneeyam is the story of Lord Narayana. It was composed by Melpatthur Narayana Bhattathiri. Bhattathiri, who was crippled, is believed to have penned this masterpiece sitting in the Guruvayur temple. Local legend says that on the hundredth day, he had the vision of the Lord and rendered a graphic description of this form, after which he was immediately cured of his disease.

Shjit Nambiar and Parvathy Menon are young, talented Bhartanatyam dancers who have established a very high reputation internationally. They have produced classic shows like Krishna, Under the Banyan Tree and Meghdootam (all of them staged in Austin

by IFA).

Habitually performing as a duo, the dancer couple cashed in on their long experience in this show. Shijith Nambiar and Parvathy Menon’s presentation on the life of Bhattathiri and excerpts from Narayaneeyam is imaginatively choreographed and beautifully presented.

The program includes a description of Guruvayur temple with daily Pooja, description of Lord Guruvayurappan, Raas Kreeda of Krishna and Gopis of Vrindavan, Mathura pravesham, followed by the Kuchela episode ending up in a magnificient Viswarupam, in the silence of the ‘paramananda sandoha lakshmeem’ prayer. by Rajkumar Bharati is evocative.
