Glad To Meet You, Congressman John Carter!

By Dushant Reddy Congressman John Carter, who is serving the Texas 31st district for the ninth term , was very gracious to accept an invitation for an online “Greet and Meet” event hosted by a large group of Indian community members from Austin.

Abhiram Garapati, a well known entrepreneur and businessman from Austin was instrumental in organizing the event.

The attendees who came to the event were very interested to know where their Representative stands on issues that were on top of their list, and to learn about what his priorities and plans are for his constituents going forward.

The event started with attendees reciting the ancient Sanskrit Prayer Sarve bhavantu sukhinah.

The Congressman became very glad on hearing the English translation of its verses - “We seek a happy , illness free, and a pure life for every being in this universe”.

lowed up with a brief introduction about the Congressman highlighting his career, achievements and the service he has been doing for his district over a period of nearly 50 years.

After the introduction, Congressman Carter addressed the audience starting with his observation of how the values of the Indian American community members are very much similar to the values of every other American in this country.

He went on to talk about how it is important for every US citizen to have a job, be able to educate their family and live in a safe and secure neighborhood. He emphasized that the United States government exists to make the lives of individual citizens better.

Coming to the topic of issues, the Congressman made it clear that the security of the individual citizen has always been the top priority for him. He also attributed his focus on this issue due to the twenty nine long years he served as a County Judge before joining the US Congress.

He went on to add how he felt proud about serving in that position because he was able to directly make an impact on keeping neighborhoods safe where children are able to play in the playgrounds, and go to school without any fear or danger.

He said he carried the same attitude when he went to congress at a time when 9/11 just happened, and helped pass bills that made it difficult for terrorists and criminals.

He also touched upon the current situation where there are calls for defunding the Police Departments.

He emphasized that Policemen are not above the law and they should be tried for the crimes they commit just like any other criminal.

So de-funding is not a solution. He also mentioned a bill he is working on which will enable the creation of a center where Police Departments nationwide can do an inquiry to check whether an applicant for a job had any issues about racism or violence against a community etc to prevent cops that otherwise might have a great record from getting hired.

Congressman Carter went on to talk about the next big thing that affects everyone in Texas.

He said “Texas has the longest border with Mexico compared to any other state in the US”.

Therefore the illegal immigration and the criminal activity that is occurring there is a major concern for him, and mentioned about serving as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Committee for six years.

He said he has been to the southern border many times as part of that job to see things first hand. He said immigration should be made simple - “If you come here legally , we should cut the red tape as much as we can and make it friendly”.

He also commended President Trump on the issue and the work he is doing on bringing back the economy.

He emphasized the importance of cutting red-tape and making it easy for entrepreneurs and businesses to grow and hire people.

Touching upon healthcare, Carter said he understands that people with pre-existing conditions must be taken care of, and he has been working on it for over 20 years.

He said there are ways to manage this without raising costs , and the answer is not to go for socialized medicine. He strongly believes America values human life and

will do the right thing to take care of all people.

The bill he is currently working on will reduce the cost of prescription drugs and supports funding for Alzheimer and Cancer research.

“Relationship with India has been the best it has ever been” remarked Congressman Carter on talking about US-India partnership.

He reiterated his support for India with regard to the current issues it is facing at its border and echoed President Trump’s statement on India - “We will be there for you!”.

He commended the Indian communities’ contribution in the tech industry locally and nationwide , and said “We are very happy to have you here” . He concluded his remarks saying “Best Wishes to all of you. Happy Navratri and Diwali. How’s that! “ .

The event concluded with audience asking a few questions about economy, the negative media campaign against Hindus, and the threat from terrorism with reference to the recent incidents in France.

Congressman Carter answered them frankly and clearly, and reiterated that he is on their side and will do his best to protect everyone’s interests in his district.

In a recent survey, 94 percent of respondents said the kits helped them have a more positive outlook on life, and 89 percent said the kits helped relieve their pain.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for effective coping strategies has only grown, according to McClain, with millions of veterans on lockdown and experiencing increased isolation, boredom and anxiety.

Not surprisingly, Heal Vets has seen a huge increase in demand, shipping nearly 290,000 craft kits to veterans since the beginning of the pandemic, including deliveries to over 90 VA medical centers, a large number of domestic and overseas military bases, state veteran homes and other locations where the need is great.

By Sadhu Utprerakam The gruesome murder of Samuel Paty , a middle school teacher in France has shocked the entire world and sent chills down the spines of free thinking people everywhere.

It was more shocking to see that some nations (including a few South Asian nations) were angry with the French President for standing up for his country’s values, and supporting the teacher, whose intent was to educate the students in his class about freedom of speech.

Given my south Asian roots, I feel sad to see such responses. This also made me introspect into society’s collective motivations to retrogress to medieval times, and if similar incidents can happen in this country.

And If so, what can we do to protect our people’s lives and freedom? As I ponder over these questions, I am reminded of the following verse from Bhagavad Gita.

Bhagavad-Gita 2.64 - one who controls the mind, and is free from attachment and aversion, even while using the objects of the senses, attains the Grace of God. Control of our mind and freeing ourselves from aversion are two aspects that human beings need to cultivate to exist in a society that aims to respect and enable free speech.

Celebrate The Holidays Grill-Side With These Tips Health experts recommend taking festivities outdoors this holiday season, which means your grill may take center stage.

“You can master some impressive culinary feats on your grill, especially with hardwood pellets that add rich, wood-fired flavor to winter dishes,” says Ben Madden, product manager at Bear Mountain BBQ Woods, crafter of gourmet, hardwood pellets.

HC4A Virtual Gala Preparing for the festive season is finally bringing some cheer to counterbalance our mostly virtual lives. Hindu Charities for America (HC4A) hosted a Virtual Gala to capture this cheer and turn it into a meaningful evening.

The gala was organized to raise funds for vocational scholarships for low-income young adults.

Political Organization At An All-Time High In Austin’s Asian American Community

Additionally, the much politicized Census has encouraged community leaders to get involved with the Asian American population.

The result is that members of the community are much more aware of the benefits of participating and the risks of going uncounted.

“Several community leaders took on the challenge to ensure every member of the community is counted.

There is great concern about justice, polarization and political rhetoric,” Ashwin Ghatalia, a member of Indian American Coalition of Texas, said.

The political momentum seems to have surely picked up. While it may be hard to find data proving that the Asian American Pacific Islanders can turn this particular election, the fact that many community leaders are getting involved and several diverse candidates are standing for office could indicate a coming shift in the Texan political spectrum.

How To Remember Last Year’s New Year Resolutions

“Why don’t people remember their New Year resolutions.” My point is that by remembering previous resolutions, one could check for progress and if progress is below

What if you remember your old resolutions, but realize you did not accomplish your goals?

“I refuse to stack up. That’s absurd!” an avid reader who makes the same resolution every year said when asked if he would add one more to the list.

This reader, who did not want to give his name, wants to just make the same resolution every year until he is satisfied with his progress.

Nearly half of us are making New Year’s resolutions, but less than 10 percent of us are actually keeping

them. Whether it’s lack of motivation, lack of resources, or we just lose interest, it’s time to make a fresh start and figure out ways to finish what we have started.

Here are 10 ways to stick to New Year’s resolutions and remember them throughout the year.

1. Involve your friends. If you are alone in your resolution, chances are you will forget about it. Involve others in the plan.

2. Make realistic goals. Think SMART: Specific, measurable, actionable, relevant and time bound.

3. Set up both short term and long term milestones to stay motivated throughout the year.

4. Check your commitment level before making the resolution.

5. Congratulate yourself for your progress.

6. Make goals that don’t impose significant financial burdens.

7. Cheat a little: Write your goals down in your cell phone or save them to your calendar.

8. Keep it simple. Maybe make only one.

“I felt the need to honor their sacrifices. They have gone through so much for the country and I want to give back to them,” Nabila Sultan, 11th grader at Westwood high school and the founder of the group, said.

HC4A is an all-volunteer organization that raises funds to help children and youth experiencing homelessness or in high-poverty situations in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles. All funds raised via the Gala will provide scholarships for students in those communities—donors designate where their dollars will go. HC4A’s scholarships support students in vocational programs that pay at least $40K upon graduation and have high placement rates. The organization’s goal is to help students begin a career that lifts them out of poverty and doesn’t leave them thousands of dollars in debt.

The latest threat intelligence from SonicWall Capture Labs, which reflects year-to-date findings through September 2020, shows that while overall malware volume declined for the third consecutive quarter, cybercriminals are increasingly using different means of attack.

“For most of us, 2020 has been the year where we’ve seen economies almost stop, morning commutes end and traditional offices disappear,” says SonicWall president and CEO, Bill Conner.

The American model of capitalism has resulted in staggering wealth inequality: 10% of US households now control 70% of US wealth, while the lower 50% control less than 2%. Clearly, American capitalism favors only a few at the top.

Should America be afraid of social programs?

No. Our social programs such as the public education system and Medicare are popular, have been around for decades, and have not resulted in America’s decline into socialism.

Clearly, Americans are not afraid of social programs, and further, have evidence that social programs do not lead to socialism. Numerous studies have shown that social programs benefit the economy as a whole.

Why? Because these programs allow people to be productive and contribute to the nation’s economy.

For example, a less educated workforce may be unable to earn sustainable wages and becomes a drain on society. Similarly, a less healthy workforce is less productive and may require state resources.

Looking to the future Much of the resentment simmering in the American population is at least in part due to stagnant wages, staggering income inequality and a growing fear that greater skillsets are required to remain employed in a fast-paced world.

It has never been more imperative to invest in social programs, whether healthcare, or job training for tomorrow’s workforce.

It is incumbent on all of us to understand clearly that socialism is a boogeyman that is being exploited by certain politicians.

What is proposed in America is not socialism, but social programs, and our need for these programs is real and immediate. The current pandemic has made the importance of universal healthcare very evident.

This safety net can help the country progress on its economic goals while ensuring that the lower strata of the society have basic necessities such as access to affordable healthcare.

Statue Of Unity

The Statue of Unity is a colossal statue of Indian statesman and independence activist Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), who was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home minister of independent India and adherent of Mahatma Gandhi during the non-violent Indian Independence movement.

2018, the 143rd anniversary of Sardar Patel’s birth.

The statue depicts Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement, the first home minister as well as the first Deputy Prime Minister of independent India, and responsible for the integration of hundreds of princely states into the modern Republic of India.

The Statue of Unity is an enlarged version of this statue in the Ahmedabad International Airport.

After studying statues of Patel across the country, a team of historians, artists, and academics chose a design submitted by the Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar. The Statue of Unity is a much larger replica of a statue of the leader installed at Ahmedabad International Airport.

Patel was highly respected for his leadership in uniting 562 princely states of India with a major part of the former British Raj to form the single Union of India. The statue is located in the state of Gujarat, India.

It is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres (597 feet). It is located on the Narmada River in the Kevadiya colony, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of the city of Vadodara and 150 kilometres (93 mi) from Surat.

The project was first announced in 2010 and the construction of the statue started in October 2013 by Larsen & Toubro, with a total construction cost of ₹2,989 crore (₹29.89 billion; US$437 million).

It was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, and was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October

The statue is built to withstand winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour (110 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale which are at a depth of 10 km and within a radius of 12 km of the statue. This is aided by the use of two 250 tonne tuned mass dampers ensuring maximum stability.

The total height of the structure is 240 m (790 ft), with a base of 58 m (190 ft) and the statue measuring 182 m (597 ft). The height of 182 metres was specifically chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

Maybe, as we are getting used to work from home, online meetings and on-line hosting of live events why not innovate new ways of socializing and have virtual parties?

I will strongly encourage ridesharing services and innovative solutions to our growing transportation needs, especially when it comes to access to our international airport.

If there are ways the city can step in and help our schools I want to hear them.

Do you see any opportunity to cut wasteful spending in our city budget, and how much do you think would help us avoid property tax increases?

Having a voice on the Council to take a stand against massive tax hikes such as Project Connect is a good start.

I believe a full audit of all city services will give us plenty of ideas on where to insist on greater efficiency.

In terms of Austin ISD, I am grieved that our family population in the urban center is dropping so much that entire campuses are closing -- this includes the oldest continuously operating school in Texas, Pease Elementary.

How is it that in one of the top boomtowns in the world our schools are dying on the vine?

Finding ways to bring back families and make life affordable in Austin is key toward rebuilding our schools and attracting the best teaching talent.

The City would like to hear from as many people as possible and ensure that the input is diverse and represents voices from across Austin.

RPS builds on Austin’s numerous reforms to public safety over the years, including an investigation of systemic discrimination and bias within APD and establishing the Office of Police Oversight.
