Austin Mayor Extends Moratorium July 26, Austin, TX — Today, Mayor Steve Adler issued Order No. 20200724 extending protec-

tions for residential tenants in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The moratorium on evictions is now extended through September 30, 2020.

Effective immediately and continuing through September30,2020 - unless terminated or modified by

a subsequent order - Mayor Adler’s order prohibits the issuance of Notices to Vacate and the removal of property of a tenant by a property owner.

The order also states it is in the public interest to prohibit the seizure of a tenant’s nonexempt property subject to a lien created under Texas Property Code Section 54.041. This Order supersedes Mayor’s Order No. 20200507-10.

The orders do not forgive rent payments. Rather, they each give renters an extended period of time to pay overdue rent.

Eid Ul Adha: What To Do With Qurbani This Year

My neighbors are used to getting the gift of goat meat from us once a year. This happens on the day my family and I celebrate Eid ul Adha along with millions of other Muslims in the United States. According to generally accepted Islamic guidelines, if one can afford it they should order the slaughtering of a goat (Qurbani) right after Hajj (annual Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca). The goat meat is to be divided into three parts. One-third is shared with friends. One third goes to charity and one third stays in the house.

This year, Eid ul Adha falls on Friday, July 31. The shops that specialize in Qurbani meat orders have streamlined the process so well that they take care of the meat for charity on their own. They already have a signup sheet for those who qualify to pick up free meat for their families. As a customer, I

bring two-thirds home. My husband and I work together to thoroughly rinse the meat and make similar sized packets in resealable bags, label and toss them in the freezer immediately.

Luckily, we have a big freezer in

our laundry room (something I came to rely upon when the kids were little).

Once frozen, the packets are ready for delivery to friends and neighbors.

My kids and I make it into a mini road trip to deliver the meat (usually ½ lb. packets). We plan out the route and inform our friends ahead of time to make sure someone is home. Sometimes friends leave a cooler with ice outside their front door in case they are stepping out.

But most are home and come out to chat and catch up quickly as we go

off to the next address.

Over the years, this has become a family plan. I remember some drives were happy and others were complaints about the heat, but we have carried this on.

I also soon realized that we were the only family going through this year after year. Most of our friends in similar situations would fulfil their obligation by making a donation online to an area of the world where there was greater human suffering. They reasoned that this was their way of making a small difference in the world.

I have respect for their point of view as well, but my husband and I figured that our way would educate our kids and maybe spread some good will around us.

This year, for the first time ever though, I too will be making a donation online as Covid-19 pandemic is creating havoc in the world.

With massive unemployment and economic downturn, I feel the entire Qurbani will best be used if donated.

While I know that one goat from my end will not make a difference, I hope other Muslims will do the same. If there are 3.45 million Muslims of all ages living in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2017) thinking on the same lines as me, and a quarter of them take part in Qurbani, 862,500 goats would be donated! Now that definitely is a sizable step to help curb hunger.

As schools nationwide decide how they’ll reopen for the fall semester, it’s important to schedule your child’s dental visit to ensure they’re in good oral health.

important for you to know about it? Simply put, a “cross-bore” is the unintended intersection of two utility lines. This article is concerned specifically with natural gas utility and unpressurized sanitary sewer lines, both of which you likely have on your property.

An “unintended intersection,” means the penetration of a sanitary sewer line by a gas utility line. According to the Cross Bore Safety Association, this is not an uncommon condition and, although statistics vary, some estimates suggest that it occurs at an average rate of 0.4 cross-bores per mile of sewer line. So how does it happen?

Cross-bores most frequently occur in association with “trenchless” methods of utility line installation.

In other words, it involves installing a utility line without digging up the ground. The reasons for doing this typically involve minimizing surface disruption, increasing the speed of installation, and reducing costs.

The downside to this method is that histor-

ically, installers have not been able see when the installed utility line penetrates a sanitary sewer line. The immediate result is typically uneventful, until the affected sewer line becomes blocked.

As far back as 1976, there have been documented incidents of attempts to clear blocked sewer lines where there is an undiscovered cross-bore.

The resulting rupture of the intersecting gas utility line by some mechanical device, like a root-cutter, allows gas to enter a home through the sewer where it is accidentally ignited, causing an explosion.

Meet Judge Dimple Malhotra Of Travis County Court At Law #4

She emerged as a clear winner in the Democratic runoff on July 14 for Travis County Court at Law #4 with 55% of the votes.

Malhotra comes to the prestigious position of Judge with perseverance, compassion and empathy, along with a desire to serve the community. Her term will last four years.

Judge Dimple Malhotra’s life is a living example of the American Dream. Born in India, she moved to the US with her parents at a young age — her mother arriving first to work as a nurse.

Throughout, she worked in nonprofits or for the government and accumulated years of experience dealing with domestic violence and family abuse cases.

The Travis County Court Judge Malhotra presides over is a specialty court that deals almost exclusively in misdemeanor domestic violence cases.

The court also oversees a diversion program for people charged with prostitution called Phoenix Court.

The day after her election, Sumaiya Malik of Austin South Asian spoke with Malhotra about her candidacy and future plans as a judge: SM: Congratulations on the big win! Could you tell us more about your role?

JDM: Thank you! The Travis County Court is a civil court which hears bench trials and jury trials.

It is a specialty court which hears misdemeanor and domestic violence cases.

I handle a docket of 3K to 4K cases of domestic violence every year. I

preside over the protective order docket.

I hear those who say they have experienced assault harassment.

There are hearings on Fridays.

This hasn’t stopped [even in time of Covid-19 pandemic]. Violence has [in fact] increased in pandemic.

[I also oversee] the Phoenix Court – Whenever participants are arrested for prostitution, we address the issues leading to prostitution.

Prostitution is a form of human trafficking. We need to address prostitution and victims of sexual assault at a young age.

SM: How did you start working for the government?

JDM: My career in the government started as a non-profit staff attorney at the Women’s Advocacy Project.

[Later] I ended up at the Travis County Attorney’s office in the prosecutor position, handling new arrests related to family violence cases.

Eventually I became Chief Prosecutor and then Head of family violence cases.

This means that you could potentially catch the disease again and spread it to others.

Myth: You don’t need to wear a mask outside.

Fact: At this time, being outside is generally considered safer than being inside.

When taking a stroll or participating in other outdoor activities by yourself or with people you live with, a mask isn’t required.

However, when you find it difficult to maintain at least six feet of distance from people you don’t live with – such as passing someone on a sidewalk or eating out at a restaurant – it’s important to have your mask on.

You should always have your mask on hand when you leave your home.

The CDC recommends that you wear a cloth face mask when you’re around people who don’t live with you and in public settings when social distancing is difficult.

Here are a few pointers for putting on and taking off a cloth mask: • Wash or sanitize your hands before and after putting on and taking off your mask.

• Place your mask over your mouth and nose.

• Tie it behind your head or use ear loops and make sure it’s snug.

• Don’t touch your mask while wearing it.

• If you accidentally touch your mask, wash or sanitize your hands.

• If your mask becomes wet or dirty, switch to a clean one. Put the used mask in a sealable bag until you can wash it.

• Remove the mask by untying it or lifting off the ear loops without touching the front of the mask or your face.

• Wash your hands immediately after removing your mask.

• Regularly wash your mask with soap and water by hand or in the washing machine.

South Asian Muslims Join Emgage Action’s Zoom Summit With Presidential Hopeful Joe Biden

For a few months now, EMGAGE Action, a prominent Muslims PAC that supports issues that are of importance to underrepresented communities, with a specific focus on American Muslims throughout the United States started actively reaching out to Texas Muslims (a large number of whom are South Asians) through Zoom as a part of a grass roots community leaders effort to mobilize Muslims to vote for Democratic Presidential hopeful Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential elections in November.

In his live address he said, “I want to earn your vote not just because he’s not worthy of being president,” the presumptive presidential nominee told participants. “I want to work in partnership with you, make sure your

voices are included in the decisionmaking process as we work to rebuild our nation.”

Biden also reiterated a pledge to overturn a Trump administration ban on travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries, calling it “vile.” (NYTimes).

Dressed sharp in a navy-blue blazer, pin striped white shirt and an American flag on his lapel, Biden looked straight at the camera and quoted Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). He wished more about Islam was taught in schools and hoped that the millions of Muslims in the United States would stand by him in the November elections.

This was a historic call because while Muslim vote has been pursued by previous presidential hopefuls, this is the first time a candidate has addressed the group directly. In Austin, the reaction has been positive.

Austin’s South Asian Muslim community in particular has been in conversation with Emgage Action to educated themselves and understand Biden’s approach. Wa’el

Alzayat, CEO of Emgage Action, said by email that the organization was seeking to maximize Muslim American turnout in key battleground states. In Michigan alone — one of the states where the organization has chapters and where Trump won in 2016 by fewer than 11,000 votes — he said he believed there are more than 150,000 registered Muslim voters.

Several prominent Muslim American elected officials endorsed Biden for president in a letter organized by Emgage Action ahead of the summit. Among those who signed are Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (who actually was in Austin last year in Ramadan), Minnesota Atorney General Keith Ellison and Indian Rep. Andre Carson, who are all Democrats.

3M and Discovery Education late last month announced the 10 national finalists for the nation’s premier middle school science competition, with at least seven of the youth scientists Indian American or South Asian American.

This year’s finalists – four girls and six boys ranging in age from 12 to 14 – identified an everyday problem they’re passionate about and submitted a one- to two-minute video communicating the science behind their solution to solve the problem, a joint news release said.

An esteemed group of judges, including 3M scientists and leaders in education from across the country, evaluated entries based on creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication effectiveness, the release said.

These young inventors won the top ten spots in this year’s challenge with their innovative thinking, scientific acumen, and display of exceptional communication skills.

The top 10 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists include students from public and private schools across America. Each finalist will receive $1,000 and the opportunity to work virtually with a 3M scientist who will mentor them as they evolve their invention from idea to prototype.

The grand prize winner will receive $25,000 and the prestigious title of America’s Top Young Scientist.

One In Five People In India Jobless After Lockdown Pakistan Returns 200-year-old

After the easing of lockdown in the country, one out of five people has been rendered jobless, as per the IANS-CVoter COVID-19 Tracker conducted among a sample size of 1,723.

According to the survey, 21.57 per cent of people have either completely laid off work or are out of work.

The survey also indicated that

25.92 per cent of people are still working under regulations and safety measures with same income or salary while 7.09 per cent people are working from home without having any cut in salary.

The central government had imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, while the process of unlocking was started from June 1.

This survey was done from June 24 to July 22, focusing on the status of

the main wage earner of the family.

According to the survey, income of 8.33 per cent people have decreased but they are working under regulations and safety measures, while 8 per cent people who are working from home also faced salary cuts or decrease in income.

T h e survey also indicated that 6.12 per cent people in the country are left with no income after the lockdown was eased, while 1.20 per cent people are still working but not getting any salary.

The current survey findings and projections are based on CVoter daily tracking poll conducted among 18+ adults statewide.

Temple to Sikhs in Quetta

QUETTA, Pakistan — A 200-yearold Sikh temple that served as a school for Muslim girls for seven decades was returned to the Sikh community in Quetta, enabling them to worship there for the first time in 73 years, officials said July 23.

The temple stood empty for a year or two when most Sikhs left Pakistan for neighboring India after the British partitioned the subcontinent into separate nations in 1947, following two centuries of colonial rule.

It’s the second-holiest place in the Sikh faith and is located on the Ravi River just 4.5 kilometers (3 miles) from Pakistan’s border with India. Currently, no Indian Sikhs are visiting shrines in Pakistan because of a travel ban imposed by their government to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has also caused 5,709 deaths and 269,191 infections across Pakistan.
