Families Are Tapping More Scholarships And Grants To Pay For College Families spent less out-of-pocket for college in academic year 2015-16 compared to last year, as they took advantage of more scholarships and grants to foot the bill, according to “How America Pays for College 2016,” the national study from Sallie Mae, the country’s largest private student lender, and Ipsos, a global independent market research company.

Scholarships and grants covered 34 percent of college costs, according to the report, the largest percentage of any resource over the last five years.

Approximately, half of families used a scholarship or grant to help pay for college.

“Families wrote smaller checks for college this year as they looked less to their wallets and more toward free money to make college happen,” says Raymond Quinlan, chairman and chief executive officer, Sallie Mae, a company focused on helping families save, plan and pay for college.

“Scholarships and grants have become an increasingly important part of the pay-forcollege mix, and it’s encouraging to see organizations, schools, and the government stepping up to provide them.” (continued on page 8)

Project Planning • Regardless of the depth of your digging or your familiarity with the property, always contact 811 before starting a project that involves digging.

• If a contractor has been hired, confirm they have done so. Don’t allow work to start until all utilities have been marked.

• After you have waited the required time for markings, if utilities have not been marked, you must contact 811 again to check the status of your request before digging. Also confirm whether the markings have an expiration date and when they will need to be remarked.

• If your project is located near the paint, flags or stakes, contact the underground operator for the specific steps you should take.

performance, scrutinizing factors like school day start times and the nutritional value of school-provided meals. However, the basic de-

sign and configuration of schools and classrooms can also have a

major impact on student success, and this fact is now getting its due attention.

The classroom environment can impact a child’s academic progress by as much as 25 percent in one year, according to a UK study at the University of Salford. Armed with a growing body of evidence of the link between school design and student performance, architects are altering their ideas accordingly.

“As a profession, we have been working closely with neuroscientists, educators, parents and even school children to make more informed design choices for 21st century learning environments,” says John Dale, chair of the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education, and studio leader at Harley Ellis Devereaux, an architecture and engineering firm. “Through these inter-

actions, architectural approaches have evolved so that classrooms in much greater numbers are becoming flexible laboratories that can accommodate a variety of learning opportunities.”

Organized by the World Catholic Association for Communication’s India chapter, the Mother Teresa International Film Festival will kick off in Kolkata Aug. 26, after which it will travel all over the world for the next six months.

Festival director Sunil Lucas said they would present the best and the biggest repertoire of films and documentaries made on the Nobel Laureate and inspired by her life.

“The objective is to spread the message of Mother Teresa before the world. We want to raise awareness and sensitize the people,” he told PTI. The Roman Catholic nun, who passed away in 1997 after serving the poor and sick on the streets of Kolkata for 45 years, will be declared a saint Sept. 4 by Pope Francis in Vatican City, Italy.

Although the complete list of films to be screened in the festival is yet to be finalized, the organizers are planning around 20 movies, out of which two will have world premieres. In Kolkata, the festival will be held for three days starting Aug. 26 at the state-run Nan-

The film festival will also travel to around 50 other countries, including the UK, Malaysia, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China.

The two films which will have world premieres are “Love Till It Hurts” by Pauline Sisters and “Memories of Mother,” made by a London-based filmmaker. Most of the films in the festival are documentaries.

Notable among them are “Making of a Saint” and “In the Name of God’s Poor,” which stars Charlie Chaplin’s daughter Geraldine as Mother Teresa. Another important work is from Emmy Award-winning directors Ann and Jeannette Petrie who made “Mother Teresa: The Legacy,” which was the official film on the occasion of her beatification in Rome.

Chronicling Mother Teresa’s rich legacy, which is carried out through the Missionaries of Charity founded by her in Kolkata, the film also showcases her interviews and other video footage.

Besides films on her life, there will be works that take a cue from her teachings like the Bengali film “My Karma.” This is the fourth edition of the festival, which is held only on special occasions associated with the Nobel Laureate.

“No saint or blessed in the Catholic Church’s history has had an international festival of films dedicated to him/her,” said Fr. C.M. Paul, who had led the first and second edition of MTIFF. The first MTIFF was held in 2003 immediately after her beatification, the second was on her 10th death anniversary in 2007, and the third edition in 2010 marked her birth centenary.

I just happened to be in the car as Ami had picked me up from school.

I had heard of the Edhis and their ambulances.

So I knew I would come across a lot of hustle and bustle when I got down with Ami at the center, but I was not prepared for the simplic-

Fast forward. It is 2016. I am my mom’s age and involved in community work in Austin. I have just heard on social media that Abdus Sattar Edhi has passed away.

My mind races to that metal half open door and Mrs. Edhi sitting behind the desk saying,, “May I help you?”

The Edhis have helped so many people and set up a system that will continue to run as simply and efficiently as it did in 1984 when I happened to meet them, her in person and him through her. “Rest in peace, Mr. Edhi. May God be with you.”

Radhika & Sanjay Rao together with performers from Atlanta received high praise for their fantastic performance that held audience enthralled for 90 minutes.

During the day, there were dances, dramas, game shows, lectures & seminars presented by performers across US & Canada.

Specially for kids, there was a day camp organized by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) where kids had a great time in creative activities such as craft, drawing & outdoor games.

After a brief break in the afternoon for setup, Sunday evening began with a musical program presented by kids across US leading to the closing ceremony.

The musical legend was assassinated in the holy month of Ramadan after he returned from his US tour on June 22 in his Karachi, less than a month after his Austin performance.

Those who went to Sabri’s performance in Austin cried with him as he sang about his love for God. They swore that Sabri had the miraculous passion that could lift an

His death as left the world of Sufi music shaken and Austin too is grieving.

Peace Bakery At The Center Of Community Eating

At the busy corner of Braker Lane and Lamar Boulevard and right across from China Town Center stands Peace Bakery, a cafeteria style restaurant and bakery serving fresh Mediterranean cuisine and open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. with one hour extra at closing time on the weekends.

There is never a moment when people are not entering or leaving.

The hustle and bustle continues inside in a warm and family like setting where Austinites come with friends or family or even on their own to eat lunch or dinner and enjoy the hospitality of this peaceful restaurant.

The restaurant is a long and wide room with steps between the bakery area and the cafeteria-style res-

The bakery makes fresh pita bread and an array of baklawa every day.

The menu on the cafeteria changes daily with constants like hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouleh, zatar, dolmas, cheese bread and shawarma every day.

The couple put together their own home recipes of Mediterranean meals on the menu.

This was to be their first restaurant and it was going to be a success.

The baklawa was crisp and made fresh. The ‘kehwa’ or dark green tea complimented it well. The husband and wife team, works hard to cook and serve and maintain a clean restaurant, but the center of all attention is Nuha, with her generous personality and warmth. Her radiance is more than welcoming.

The restaurant is clean with freshly mopped floors.

Nuha was used to cooking large quantities of food.

There is ample seating on wooden chairs and tables.

To transition it into a restaurant might have been a chore for some, but it was a piece of cake for Nuha.

Growing Garlic

By Venkappa Gani Garlic has been one of the main ingredient used in cooking spicy food. It has been used as dietary for reducing blood pressure.

When you say garlic people hate its smell and do not want to eat it.

Last year one american friend gave three large size cloves to try growing.

I planted along with my other small clove garlics.

Both grew well large clove garlic had tall scapes with flower head with snaky figure and hard stem.

Came to know that there two types of garlic one soft neck with small cloves and other one hard neck with large cloves with long scape with flower head on top.

There are many varieties of garlic grown in many countries.

They would rather take a pill as dietary substitute.

They do not understand the health benefit of raw garlic use.

I have been fond of using garlic as growing up in India.

Garlic used to be one of the essential part in cooking vegetables.

Garlic size used to be small with strong pungent odour.

Here in USA saw large size garlic called Elephant Garlic with large cloves but it did not have strong pungent smell.

I got interested in growing garlic in the garden.

Started with small size one used at home for cooking.

It grew well at backyard garden and saved garlic cloves for planting.

Both varieties produced larger bulbs and hard neck grew almost 4 feet long with with snaky stem with flower head which amazed me to see.

They were ready for annual the Austin Garden Club horticulture vegetable and flower show in May 2016.

It is easy to grow with sandy soil with proper drainage with adequate watering.

Entered the garlics for the show and soft neck got the King of Show award.

Sow the garlic cloves 1-2 inch deep and 4-6 inch apart in a row and row spacing of 12 inches during fall time.

Rajini played a womaniser in many of his films in the late 1970s including Katha Sangama, Avargal, Aadu Puli Aattam and Gaayathri.

As Kabali releases, a look at how an ordinary bus conductor in Bangalore grew to be one of the biggest icons of Indian cinema.

Born into a Marathi family on December 12, 1950, Rajinikanth was named Shivaji Rao Gaekwad. He is the youngest of four siblings and when he was five years old, he lost his mother. His father was a police constable.

Right from school, young Shivaji had a passion for acting and participated in school plays, winning praise for his performances.

After completing his education, he worked as a coolie and carpenter before being recruited by the Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor.

The bus conductor soon quit his job and joined an acting course at the Madras Film Institute, much against his family’s wishes.

His first colour film, Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile saw him play a ruthless rogue, Parattai, whose often repeated dialogue, ‘Idhu Eppadi Irukku?’ (‘How is this?’), is fondly remembered even today.` In 1977, director S P Muthuraman gave him the opportunity to play one of the leads in the film, Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri.

His performance as Sri Raghavendra Swami won him much critical acclaim, but failed to set the cash registers ringing.

In August 1975, Shivaji Rao Gaekwad became Rajinikanth and made his debut in Tamil cinema with a small, but significant, role in Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal.

Rajinikanth also holds the distinction of being part of India’s first photo-realistic performance capture film, Kochadaiiyaan.

Directed by his daughter and released in 2014, the film flopped miserably. The last couple of years have not been good for the actor.

There has been much criticism about his choice of scripts. Lingaa, which also released in 2014, was another disaster.

But the 65 year old is not ready to give up yet. In an unexpected move, the actor teamed up with a relatively new director, Pa Ranjith, for Kabali.

This was followed by a series of negative roles, but his performance in Moondru Mudichu drew him a lot of attention.

He was brilliant as a spurned lover, who carelessly tossed his cigarettes into the air, earning him a fan following that remains loyal to this day.

Moondru Mudichu will also be remembered for being the first film that featured Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together.

The duo worked in nearly 10 films before going their separate ways.
