How Single-Use Plastics Are Driving Climate Change Did you know that single-use plastic is a major driver of climate change and is harmful to human health -- even when it’s recycled?

According to a new report, leading consumer goods companies are driving the expansion of plastic production. And by doing so, are threatening the global climate and the health and safety of communities around the world.

The Greenpeace USA report, “The Climate Emergency Unpacked: How Consumer Goods Companies are Fueling Big Oil’s Plastic Expansion,” exposes the business links between the world’s largest consumer goods and fossil fuel companies. Without this transparency, the report’s authors say that consumer goods companies are largely able to avoid accountability for environmental or human rights violations committed by the companies that supply plastic for their packaging.

“The same well-known brands driving the plastic pollution crisis are helping fuel the climate crisis,” says Greenpeace USA global plastics project leader, Graham Forbes. “Despite their best efforts to appear climate-

friendly, consumer goods companies are working alongside the fossil fuel industry to expand plastic production, which could lock the world into catastrophic emissions levels

and a planet warmed beyond saving.”

Indeed, over 99 percent of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and according to industry estimates, plastic production could triple by 2050. This projected growth would increase

global emissions from the plastic life cycle by over 50 percent on 2019 levels by 2030, equivalent to nearly 300 coal-fired power plants. This is the same timeframe that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned human caused emissions must fall by nearly 50 percent to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C. The report also details how single-use plastics hurt people who live on the frontlines of its production. Plastic production has been linked to health issues like cancer and asthma, and these impacts are disproportionately felt by poor communities and communities of color.

Despite the many adverse impacts of singleuse plastic packaging, the report finds that consumer goods companies have partnered with fossil fuel companies for decades to advocate recycling, while opposing legislation that would restrict its production “The world’s largest brands are working with the fossil fuel industry to use recycling as a smokescreen. Recycling will never be the answer to the plastic pollution crisis,” says Forbes.

The Peace Corps Is Recruiting Volunteers From Diverse Backgrounds The Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level.

While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and AsianAmericans.

“As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps.

“We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential.”

New Challenges While Peace Corps service is demanding for every volunteer, being

“Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many simi-

larities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public.

Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.”

“My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica.

Family Conversations May Reveal Critical Health History

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a rare disease that can be passed down from generation to generation within families. This condition causes numerous cysts to grow in the kidneys, resulting in the kidneys enlarging and losing function over time. Additionally, nearly 50 percent of affected patients over age 60 will experience kidney failure or end stage renal disease (ESRD).

The most common form of PKD is Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) which, according to the National Kidney Foundation, accounts for nearly 90 percent of all PKD cases.

ADPKD affects an estimated 140,000 Americans. While relatively rare, it is the most common inherited kidney disease and the fourth leading overall cause of end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure. As a progressive condition, ADPKD may eventually lead to kidney failure requiring some form of renal replacement therapy, such as dialysis or kidney transplant.

“Although seemingly rare, ADPKD is quite prevalent and affects many families generation after generation. In fact, children of par-

ents with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease, and spontaneous mutations can occur in new generations as well,” says Meyeon Park, MD, MAS, director of the UCSF Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence and nephrologist, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. “This emphasizes the importance of people with a family history of PKD discussing the condition with their relatives, as well as the importance of speaking with a doctor who specializes in kidney care as early as possible.”

Diagnosing ADPKD ADPKD is typically diagnosed by an ultrasound of the kidneys; however, a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan may also be

conducted. Genetic testing may sometimes be used for people who have received an inconclusive imaging result, have no family history of the condition, who may be considering testing to determine if they can pass the gene on to their children, and for diagnosis of possible kidney donors.

Using the latest technologies, physicians can now identify ADPKD patients at risk for rapid progression of kidney function decline as well as estimate how quickly someone with ADPKD is likely to progress to kidney failure based on the size of his or her kidneys. Although disease progression can be highly variable, even among family members, it’s important to confirm diagnosis early as patients with rapidly progressing ADPKD reach end stage renal disease at a younger age.

Disease Management Strategies Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for ADPKD patients, since this disease progressively gets worse over time and cannot be reversed. While signs and symptoms often develop between ages of 30 and 40, individuals with a history of kidney diseases – and especially if ADPKD runs in the family – shouldn’t delay speaking with a kidney specialist, also known as a nephrologist. By acting early, individuals may be able to take steps to help protect kidney function and properly manage the disease, as well as any related complications such as high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, infected or bleeding cysts, abdominal bloating or discomfort and chronic pain.

Seema Azam - Helping Afghan Refugees With Pushto, Supplies And Super Ladies

By Sumaiya Malik When Seema Azam moved to Texas with her husband in 1995, she had no idea that years later, she would be helping Afghan refugees with language services in Austin.

Many went back but some settled permanently in Pakistan entering mostly from NW Pakistan and settling around Peshawar.

She was fluent in three languages, one of them being Pushto, spoken in northern parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“I remember noticing Afghan children in my class in 6th grade class,” Azam said.

Pakistan is home to more than 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees, many of whom entered Pakistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979, Al-Jazeera said. At one point in 2001 there were up to 3 million.

I have a lot of stuff in my closet, with clothes and shoes. I started realizing how blessed I am.”

Case managers at RST use interpreters like Seema Azam to help refugees understand how to apply for food stamps, jobs, social security services and to also settle them in homes and start schooling for their children.

She decided to do more than provide interpretation. “I reached out to my friends, and they reached out to theirs to help [gather household items and clothing] the Afghan refugees resettle,” she said.

Out of about a hundred families that Azam has helped over the last three years through the non-profit, only a handful could understand some basic English, she said.

She had also seen Afghans settle around Peshawar, her home city, after the first Afghan War in 1979.

“They were fluent in Pushto, had bought homes and businesses in my city.”

Soul Stirring Music By Atif Aslam- Revisited

By Sumaiya Malik Pakistani pop singer Atif Aslam whose rocking performance in Austin with Indian star Sonu Nigam in 2016 still rings in our ears is all set for a television debut with a Pakistani HumTV drama serial Sang-e-Mah. The drama is a sequel to Pakistani Pushto drama Sang-e-Marmar from 2016 available for free on YouTube.

It is expected to be the second in a trilogy with star-studded cast in addition to Aslam.

But Aslam came to fame with his singing career with hits after hits in the music world and song releases in Pakistan, where he hails from.

Southwestern National Bank will be hosting an art contest open to kids Grand (K-9) for the purpose of aiding young creators in sharing their artwork with the world.

Between now and Oct. 20, 2021, Southwestern National Bank will be accepting completed artwork at all branch locations.

All original artworks must be delivered to the bank and postmarked on or before the deadline contestants cannot submit their artwork electrically such as via email. All electronic versions or emailed entries will not be accepted.

All contestants must prepare an original, hand drawn piece of artwork fitting to the theme of “Save Mother Earth” Contestants are allowed to be inspired by other art pieces and photographic images but must not copy the piece, and the completed art pieces must not include any tracing, photographs, and/or computer-generated image artworks.

The art pieces must be of the student’s own personal design, without the help or contribution of any adult or secondary person, using any medium applied by brush on a surface of 8.5” W by 11” H without framing.

Museum Residency Exhibition

The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center will host an in-person artist talk for The Small Black Museum Residency Exhibition on Saturday, October 2 from 1 – 3 p.m. Featured artists from the inaugural residency cohort includes: Temitope Olujobi, Hypatia Sorunke, and Adrian Armstrong.

Olujobi is an architect turned game designer who utilizes virtual landscapes as a medium to deconstruct and contemplate linearity and binary gender expression. Sorunke uses film in both print and motionmedia to navigate what it means to return to a sense of “normalcy” built around an unbalanced social and economic system. Armstrong treats collage and acrylic based paintings as a vehicle to disrupt the expectation to embody “Black Excellence” through a series of both simple and glorifying portraiture.

The group exhibition marks the completion of the first residency

series, which aims to support and promote both established and emerging artists of African descent. The artist talk will delve into the new series of works produced by the artists during their threemonth residency which are now on view in the Carver Museum’s gallery until January 2022.

The talk will be moderated by Kendyll Gross, Education Coordinator at The Art Galleries at Black Studies at University of Texas at Austin and a doctoral candidate at the Department of Art History at UT Austin.

Now that the summer is over, and school has started it is time for fall cleaning to get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sometimes I do not know how to start the cleaning.

Should it be from the first room as we enter the house, or from the kitchen or should it be the bedroom as most of the things that needs to be shoved somewhere finds a place in the walk-in-closet of the bedroom?

The very thought of fall cleaning sometimes is so daunting that I want to find an excuse not to do any cleaning.

So, this time I have thought of a simple method wherein I will write everyday to attack just three tasks and see whether I can complete them and then move on to the next three tasks to complete.

As an example, plan to tackle two boxes as my walk-in-closet is filled with many boxes, take just two shelves to organize and arrange in the pantry and one bookshelf in the library as I have more than 5 bookshelves and one closet in the library to tackle for three tasks rule.

I do not know whether I will be successful or not but at least this is different method and so I am excited about it and looking forward to it.

It’s been a year without SPB - the late legendary singer SP Balasubramanyam, who had a screen career of about 50 years, enthralled everyone as a singer, actor, composer, dubbing artist, and a filmmaker.
