With the cost of most goods and services on the rise, straining many household budgets, families are likely looking for ways to cut expenses.
But it’s important to make wise decisions before cutting, as some expenses are worth more than they cost and can provide a lifetime of benefits.
Life insurance is one example. While often viewed as just a cost, life insurance is actually an investment in your family’s well-being. Unfortunately, too many people don’t have any life insurance or don’t have enough because they don’t have all the facts.
That’s why Erie Insurance is working to debunk some of the more common myths that prevent families from having sufficient coverage.
#1: It’s too expensive
Many people believe life insurance is a monthly payment comparable
to a car or house payment. In reality, the average cost of life insurance (depending on individual situations) is $14 a month, according to Erie Insurance. Giving up one restaurant meal a month can help set your family up for financial stability for years. To roughly calculate how much life insurance would cost to cover your family’s needs, check out Erie Insurance’s Life Insurance Coverage Calculator.
#2: Stay-at-home and single par-
ents don’t need it
If you’re a stay-at-home or single parent, life insurance might seem like an unnecessary expense. Yet, if you or your spouse are gone, someone will need to provide childcare and cover other expenses for your children. Life insurance could take away the burden of figuring out how to afford childcare as you or someone else adjusts and assimilates to a huge life change.
#3: It is only beneficial after you die
Although life insurance is typically used for after-death support, some policies allow you to tap into your benefits for certain reasons while you are alive.
For example, with some terminal or chronic illnesses, your policy may pay out a certain amount to support medical expenses. With some policies, you can also use your life insurance to support long-term care. To learn more about pre-death life insurance benefits, contact your insurance agent.
#4: My employer already covers me, so I’m set
Even though many employers offer life insurance plans, those plans tend to be limited in their coverage and options. Also, most employersponsored coverage disappears after you leave that job.
Adding an additional policy allows you to have more security in the event you were to pass away. To calculate how much life insurance
you need to sufficiently cover your loved ones, visit https://www.erieinsurance.com/lifecalc.
#5: I’m too young to worry about life insurance
When you are young, the last thing you want to do is think about death and dying. However, life insurance premiums tend to be cheaper the younger you are.
Plus, having life insurance while paying off debts – especially if you have a cosigner – gives extra security to your cosigner in the unfortunate event you were to pass away.
Life insurance is designed to support your loved ones should something happen to you. Show them you really care about their longterm welfare.

(Continued From Page 01) In its World Migration Report 2024, launched on Tuesday, the IOM revealed that India was the top recipient of remittances in 2022, with Mexico, China, the Philippines, and France rounding out the top five.
The report highlighted the steady growth of remittances to India over the years. In 2010, India received USD 53.48 billion in remittances, which grew to USD 68.91 billion in 2015, USD 83.15 billion in 2020, and ultimately USD 111.22 billion in 2022. This influx of funds is largely driven by a significant number of migrant workers from Southern Asia. The report noted that India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, among the top ten recipients of international remittances, demonstrate the importance of labour migration in the region.
However, while remittances provide vital support to families and communities, the report also pointed out that migrant workers face numerous risks, such as financial
exploitation, excessive financial debt due to migration costs, xenophobia, and workplace abuses. The Gulf States, a common destination for migrant workers from India and other countries, have faced criticism for rights violations, particularly highlighted during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Additionally, the IOM report discussed migration trends and patterns. It revealed that nearly 18 million or 1.3 per cent of India’s population are international migrants, making India the largest source of migrants globally. Major diasporas from India are located in the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. The report also stated that India is the 13th most popular destination for immigrants, with 4.48 million people coming from other countries to live in India.
Regarding irregular migration, the report highlighted ongoing challenges at the United States-Mexico border, with record numbers of encounters in 2022. This has led
• 6 slices thick-sliced bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled (about 1 cup)
• 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
• 4 large eggs
• 1/2 cup milk
Instructions:
1. Place oven rack in lowest position. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Heat oil in large skillet on medium-high heat. Add vegetables and 1 teaspoon Flavor Maker Seasoning. Cook and stir 5 minutes until softened. Remove from heat.
2. Prepare pie crust as directed on package for one-crust pie using 9-inch pie plate. Layer vegetable mixture, bacon and cheese in pie crust. Whisk eggs, milk, and remaining 1 teaspoon Flavor Maker Seasoning in medium bowl until well blended. Pour egg mixture over filling in pie crust.
3. Bake on lowest oven rack 40 to 45 minutes until set, and knife inserted in center comes out clean. If necessary, after 15 to 20 minutes of baking, cover crust with strips of foil to prevent excessive browning.
Let stand 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Sprinkle with additional Flavor Maker Egg Topping, to taste.
Tip: Flavor Maker Egg Topping Seasoning is also great sprinkled on scrambled or fried eggs or stirred into omelets and breakfast casseroles.
This versatile collection of spices is available in the following varieties: Chicken, Veggie, Pasta, Avocado, Egg, Sandwich, Pizza, Chili, Salmon, Potato, Asian-style Rice Bowl, Mac & Cheese, Mediterranean, Ramen and Taco. Big flavor doesn’t have to be accompanied by maximum effort. . (StatePoint)
to a significant increase in arrivals from countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua. However, it also noted that these encounters included migrants from other regions, including Haiti, Brazil, and even India.
The report emphasized the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migration patterns, particularly affecting low-skilled and undocumented workers. The pandemic led to job losses, wage theft, and a lack of social security, causing many Indian migrants to face financial instability and deep debt. It also reshaped internal migration within India, with a decline in blue-collar workforce mobility towards cities, affecting labour supply in major industries. Overall, the IOM’s World Migration Report 2024 provides a comprehensive view of the shifting landscape of migration and remittances, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges that migrant workers face in their journeys across the globe. Williams and Cook elementary schools kicked off the start of renovations to open-concept spaces by hanging a ceremonial garland created by students, while Wooten, Harris and Sadler Means YWLA students helped “turn the dirt” for their future fully modernized schools.
“By modernizing these schools, we’re making a tremendous impact on the learning environment and improving the experience of students for generations to come,” said Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura. “Every campus will be uniquely designed by and for the communities they serve. It has been amazing to see such handson involvement to customize the needs of these schools.”
Each school receiving an openconcept renovation or modernization has a Campus Architectural Team (CAT) composed of teachers, staff, and family nd community members who provide guidance to the design team throughout the planning process. The CATs play an integral role in ensuring the new building meets he needs of their school community.
“The 2022 Bond was the largest bond in district history, so these projects are just the beginning of a wide range of improvements that will benefit all of Austin ISD,” said Board President Arati Singh. “There is a lot of work ahead of us, but we know it will be well worth it when our students and teachers walk into these modernized spaces for the first time. Thank you to the voters for making these projects possible.” Four additional modernizations are expected to break ground this Fall. Perhaps even more nerve-wracking than waiting for your child’s college acceptance letters is learning whether they’ve been awarded financial aid. Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designed to simplify the process have led to unforeseen hiccups and technical glitches, causing academic institutions to delay sending out financial aid award letters. However, once you finally get the results, it can give your family a better idea of what to do next.
“Our research shows that for a majority of parents, figuring out how to pay for college was the ‘road to college’ activity that caused them the most stress. By making a financial plan and prioritizing it, you can be well prepared to avoid the most common bumps in the road,” explains Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer, College Ave.
Colatriano recommends using the spring to teach your child these valuable financial skills: how to set up a budget, how to pay bills and how to manage credit. If your family will potentially be borrowing to finance college, students should also gain an understanding of how loans work, and how the different terms of the loan will affect their
monthly payments and overall loan cost.
Speaking of budget, you should set a realistic budget for yourself. A recent College Ave survey found that in addition to helping pay for tuition and housing costs, parents also contribute to their child’s phone bill (65%), health insurance (61%), food and groceries (42%), cable and internet bill (35%) and transportation (32%). Be realistic about which expenses you can afford and where you want to ask your child to chip in.
Decode Award Letters
Financial aid award letters can look different for each school. Familiarize yourself with their components so that when they arrive, you’ll be ready to decipher them. Here’s what to look for:
1. Free money: The award letter will list
whether your student is eligible for scholarships and grants (sometimes called Merit or Gift Aid). This is money you typically don’t need to pay back.
2. Federal Work-Study: Your child might be eligible for Federal Work-Study jobs. While jobs aren’t guaranteed, they can be a good opportunity to help cover educational expenses.
3. Student Loans: Schools will list any federal loans your child is eligible to receive. Helpful hint: They may be grouped with scholarships and grants. You should also note whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized. Because unsubsidized loans accrue interest while your student is enrolled and during deferment periods, this will affect the overall loan cost.
4. Other factors: Check if awards being offered are for all four years and understand what your child will need to do to continue being eligible for them, year-to-year.
To get an apples-to-apples look at the offers, calculate the net direct cost of each school by subtracting offered scholarships and grants from the cost of attendance (tuition, room,
board, textbooks and fees). If applicable, you can subtract work-study aid too. You should also factor in expected increases in tuition, room, board and other fees.
If after doing the math, you find you have a financial gap to cover, look into private scholarships. One easy one to enter on a monthly basis is College Ave’s $1,000 Scholarship Monthly Sweepstakes.
You may also want to consider a private student loan or parent loan. Look for a lender with great rates, flexible repayment terms, and the opportunity to customize the loan to fit your budget. For example, College Ave offers student loan calculators, a pre-qualification tool that offers quick answers without affecting your credit score, and other helpful tools and resources. To learn more, visit CollegeAve.com.
“The important thing is not to panic. If you filled out the FAFSA, financial aid award letters are on the way. And once you receive them, you and your student can get to the fun part of planning for the future,” says Colatriano. (StatePoint)
May is National Small Business Month, an annual opportunity to support the hard work of small business owners. The backbone of the nation’s economy, small businesses employ 45.9% of the entire U.S. workforce and make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Unfortunately, some small businesses don’t have much in the way of resources, and often struggle to keep their doors open and their cash reserves in the black. Sometimes though, the difference between success and failure is capital, marketing and support. A reliable provider of essential small business services for more than 40 years, The UPS Store can help enable entrepreneurs to actualize their big ideas into success. It’s also the nation’s largest franchise system of retail shipping, postal, print and business service centers, meaning that many local store operators are small business owners themselves. In honor of National Small Business Month, the brand is offering entrepreneurs these three tips:
1. Be top of mind: Maintain a dialogue with your community and customers. Regularly
refresh your social media channels with new content, maintain an e-newsletter, and of course, don’t neglect traditional promo-
tion. Save time by visiting a one-stop shop that can help you design, print and mail your marketing materials.
2. Protect yourself: Data theft is more common than ever as new threats emerge all the time. The Federal Trade Commission offers businesses free resources for improving their
cybersecurity awareness. And when it’s time to dispose of physical documents, be sure to use a trusted solution. You can securely shred unneeded business documents at The UPS Store locations nationwide.
3. Get inspired: Need some inspiration? Look no further than the Small Biz Challenge. This three-phase competition from The UPS Store and Inc. Business Media
is a search for the country’s most unstoppable small business owners. Among nearly 6,000 entrants, nine semifinalists were chosen, then paired with a mentor to guide them through the competition. Stemming from a wide variety of skill sets and backgrounds, the mentors include professional life coaches, brilliant business owners, podcast hosts,
creative directors, and bestselling authors. During National Small Business Month, three of the semifinalists will be chosen to compete live in Miami, Florida for a share of the grand prize of up to $35,000 and a feature in “Inc.”
“Each year, this competition presents exhilarating and interactive ways to support and showcase small business owners and entrepreneurs from across the nation,” said Michelle Van Slyke, senior vice president of marketing and sales at The UPS Store, Inc. “This year’s competition returns even bigger and better to help small business owners grow and hone their skill set and therefore find customized solutions to complex challenges.”
To learn more about the Small Biz Challenge competitors and to cast your vote for this year’s semifinalists, visit theupsstore.com/ smallbizchallenge.
Being a small business owner within an ever-changing landscape can feel intimidating. But with support and local resources, entrepreneurs can turn their vision into a reality. (StatePoint)
As more consumers passionately embrace social causes, they’re looking to spend their dollars with brands committed to responsible, sustainable retail.
According to a Sensormatic Solutions U.S. Consumer Sustainability Survey, 70% of consumers would change their shopping habits after learning a brand isn’t operating sustainably. Of Gen Z shoppers, over 60% prefer to buy from sustainable brands, and 73% are willing to pay more for sustainable products.
With shoppers of all ages prioritizing environmental, social and governance commitments when making purchasing decisions, retailers that want to maintain customer loyalty while also doing their part to protect the environment are shifting their practices to align with consumer sentiments.
According to Deloitte’s 2023 CXO Sustainability Report, 73% of chief experience officers from the consumer industry have increased their investments in sustainability over the past year.
“Consumers have been very clear about the importance of sustainable retail practices to their purchasing decisions—and the tactics retailers use to heed the call often happen across their supply chain before a product
even hits the sales floor,” says Christa Anz, head of marketing at Sensormatic Solutions, a leading global retail solutions provider.
“Retailers are relying on emerging technologies to streamline their operations, to reduce waste, and to make sustainability part of their business models, from who they choose as vendors, to what materials they use, and how it’s shipped to store.”
If shopping sustainably is important to you, you can show retailers you value their com-
mitment and learn more about the meaningful work they are doing in order to practice what they preach. Here are a few of the operational changes you might see, and others that may be happening behind the scenes:
• Reducing or eliminating plastic use in packaging, or using recyclable materials in packaging.
• Utilizing loss prevention options, like AM labels made from plastic-free and/or renew-
able materials to reduce environmental impact while protecting high-risk items.
• Refining inventory management programs to reduce waste.
• Implementing in-store technology with built-in power saving modes for less energy consumption.
• Leveraging connected, cloud-based technologies for remote servicing, which means less wheels on the ground.
• Expanding in-store recycling programs or resale services.
• Using eco-friendly fabrics, materials and manufacturers.
• Engaging in ethical labor practices.
To learn more about how new technologies are improving the way retailers do business, visit sensormatic.com.
“You can rest assured that while many aspects of the shopper experience might feel the same as before, retailers are actually listening to your desires and are integrating eco-friendly initiatives into their daily practices from the warehouse to the store.” (StatePoint)
Warm weather is here and if you’re spending more time in nature, you may be wondering how to align your own routines to be more planet friendly. One easy place to make improvements is in the bathroom. Here are four simple tips to do just that:
1. Take shorter showers. Simply shortening your shower time can help reduce the amount of energy your home uses to heat water. You might also consider turning the water temperature down a bit. Cooler showers are not only better for the planet, they can be better for your skin and hair -- and a lot more refreshing in the warmer months!
2. Turn off the water when brushing. Turning the water off when you brush your teeth can make a huge difference over time. Think of it this way -- if you heed your hygienist’s advice and brush for 2 minutes twice a day, you could be running the faucet needlessly for 1,460 minutes a year!
3. Recycle recyclables. Some research suggests the bathroom may be the least sustain-
Some people carefully scan ingredient lists and many look for third-party certifications. The cruelty-free mark from PETA certifies no animal testing was performed with the product. Ingredient quality certifications are also important, but less common.
Herbal Essences, for example, partners with leading plant scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to certify the quality and authenticity of the botanicals used in its shampoo and conditioners. Full of ingredients your hair loves like Aloe and Camellia seed oil, and free of things like parabens, dyes and phthalates, you can get healthy, beautiful hair and have confidence in the ingredient quality. Herbal Essences has also recently introduced a new bottle design with less plastic. To learn more, visit herbalessences.com.
Over time, small changes can have a huge impact. This summer, consider a few simple bathroom-routine changes that can help make a positive difference. (StatePoint)
A new survey suggests that while consumers are decreasing their spending to get by in the current economy, they harbor some anxieties and are struggling to improve their approach to money management.
The inaugural “Wells Fargo Money Study” surveyed American adults and teens to uncover candid truths about their current finances, money stories, personal goals and other issues related to their attitudes toward money.
One overarching theme to the findings is that complicated emotions and money often go hand-in-hand. Americans are worried about money and for many, these concerns began at a young age. More than two-thirds of adults worry about money and over half of teens do.
What’s more, many people reported feeling embarrassed, judged and overfocused on the subject. Some even admitted that money created tension in their family and relationships. At the same time, money is a subject that most Americans attempt to avoid. Up to two-thirds are reluctant to talk about money, four out of five regard it as a private topic, and most Americans say it’s harder to talk about than religion, politics or death.
Up to one-third of all those surveyed say they have lied about their money. And among teens, half confess they have lied about how much they spend.
The good news? While money anxieties, and some not so positive habits are common, Americans remain optimistic about where their money stories are heading and believe there are solutions to helping them make improvements. Large majorities of respondents say they would value help from their bank in being more intentional and thoughtful about their spending, and in aligning their choices with their values. Most of those surveyed also see their bank as a potential source of education on financial subjects.
With nearly half of Americans seeking support in the form of ideas for improving their situation, along with ways to plan, envision and map out the future, and nearly onefifth of Americans valuing technology solutions that simplify money management, tools like LifeSync in the Wells Fargo mobile app are
meeting consumers where they are. This app allows users to create and personalize their goals and track their progress. It also offers financial snapshots, allowing users to view their account summary and FICO Score at the touch of the button, and provides market commentary, tailored insights and other content that can inspire smart decisions and a new approach to finances.
For additional survey insights, visit sites.wf.com/wfmoneystudy.
“The data tells us that Americans –no matter who they are – are uncertain about the sustainability of their financial lives. However, making small, incremental changes can help you accomplish your financial goals, and become more open and honest about your money habits,” says Michael Liersch, head of Advice and Planning for Wells Fargo.

Nearly 25 million people of all ages in the United States are living with asthma, a lifelong chronic disease that makes it harder to move air in and out of the lungs. Here’s what the American Lung Association wants everyone to know during summer, when extreme heat can make asthma harder to manage.
1. New challenges are emerging. Beyond traditional asthma triggers like respiratory infections, secondhand smoke and pets, new challenges are emerging. The effects of climate change include extreme heat, poor air quality, increased allergens, extreme weather events, and more frequent and intense wildfires, all of which are making asthma more difficult to manage. Excessive heat and humidity increase the risk of asthma exacerbations, asthma-related hospitalization and asthma-related death, especially for children and women. Patients should limit time outdoors during heat waves, seek access to air conditioning and take steps to improve indoor air quality, as hu-
midity allows dust mites and mold to thrive.
2. City dwellers are particularly vulnerable.
Two-thirds of the average U.S. city is made up of roads, parking spaces, sidewalks and roofs. Since these surfaces are typically dark and non-porous, they contribute to flooding, increased air pollution, poor health and what is known as “urban heat,” a phenomenon in which cities experience warmer temperatures than surrounding areas. Urban heat, combined with pollutants from power plants, motor vehicles and other pollution sources, creates ozone pollution, also known as smog. Those with asthma can experience symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing from both groundlevel ozone and particle pollution, as well as from the impacts of extreme weather and airborne allergens.
Sadly, these issues disproportionally impact certain communities.
Due to a history of discriminatory practices like systematic denial of mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services on the basis of race and ethnicity, Black and Indigenous people, and other people of color, are more likely to be living in areas impacted by urban heat and poor air quality.
3. Flooding can harm lung health. Increased severe storms due to climate change results in more flooding, which can harm lung health. Chemicals, sewage, oil, gas and other dangerous substances found in floodwaters can pose health risks, and mold, associated with asthma attacks, can grow anywhere there is water or dampness.
4. Advocacy efforts are underway. The Smart Surfaces Coalition is made up of 40 national and international organizations committed to making Smart Surfaces the global urban design standard. Smart Surfaces encompass a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including reflective (cool) roofs and
pavements, green roofs, trees, solar panels and rain gardens. Designed to mitigate urban heat, enhance air quality and improve health, these transformative urban features can cool cities by 5 degrees F, reduce flooding, provide economic benefits and potentially advance environmental justice.
The American Lung Association, an active member of the Smart Surfaces Coalition, encourages cities to take these actions:
• Install light-colored roads, parking lots and driveways to reflect sunlight and reduce heat.
• Install solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity and provide shade for roofs.
• Plant trees to increase shade.
• Select porous surfaces to collect polluted stormwater, soak it into the ground, and filter out pollution.
Other strategies to reduce urban heat, air pollution and ozone levels include using public transportation carpooling, increasing green spac-
es and installing cooling centers in extreme conditions.
5. Resources are available. Educational programming can help people better manage the disease in summer and year-round. Patients can check out the self-management education programs, information and tools available at Lung.org/ asthma or call the American Lung Association’s Lung Helpline at 1-800-LUNGUSA. Living with an illness, or being the caretaker to someone who is, can take a physical and emotional toll. Patients can get support and knowledge, and connect with others by joining the Lung Association’s Patient & Caregiver Network.
For the 24.8 million Americans living with asthma, extreme summer temperatures and emerging environmental threats can make life more difficult. Fortunately, new educational resources and expanded programming can help patients navigate new and old challenges alike. (StatePoint)

This passion was one key differentiator between women and men business leaders, with only 28% of men reporting personal satisfaction as a primary driver of staying in business.
“For many women business owners, starting and running a business is born out of a personal interest or an opportunity to make a difference in the community,” said Shana Peterson-Sheptak, head of Business Banking at PNC.
“That’s not at the expense of profitability, but it shows the power of being passionate or satisfied with what you do.”
Positive Outlook
Respondents noted more than just passion for their businesses, though; they also reported optimism about the next six months, both for the economy and the success of their ventures.
Women leaders were more likely than men to expect increases in demand (51% to 49%), sales (51% to 49%), prices of their
goods and services (49% to 40%), and profits (52% to 43%) in the coming months.
They also were more likely to expect their own compensation and retirement savings to increase – a significant change since PNC’s Fall 2022 survey when women leaders were less likely than men to expect increases in those two metrics.
While both women and men leaders were highly optimistic about their near-term pros-
pects for their business, women were significantly more likely to express confidence in the national and local economies than men, 64% to 51% and 72% to 60% respectively.
Of those who expressed greater optimism for their business prospects than the national economy as a whole, nearly 80% of women leaders attributed their optimism to confidence in their own abilities.
“Better than expected economic performance in the first part of 2024 is creating optimism for many business leaders as a whole,” Peterson-Sheptak said.
“But women are especially confident that both their businesses will be successful in the coming months and their abilities as leaders will help make them so.”
There are significant differences between men and women in terms of what they feel they need to succeed and how they prefer to receive support, according to the latest survey results.
While peers in the field are the most popular form of support for both women and men business leaders (64% to 69%, respectively), women indicate they are more likely to consider support from community, friends and family vital to their business success than men (62% to 41%).
That support extends to banking relationships. PNC survey feedback has shown that women financial decision makers seek out relationships that extend beyond banking products and services to include financial education and community connections.
PNC cultivates relationships with women financial decision makers in many ways, including through the local cross line of business market teams led by PNC’s more than 50 regional presidents coast to coast.
Central to this year-round engagement is the company’s network of more than 5,000 PNC-certified Women’s Business Advocates who share a passion for helping women financial decision makers achieve their financial goals.
To learn more about PNC and how it supports women financial decision makers, visit www.pnc.com/women.
“Women entrepreneurs are leading with passion for their business, confidence, and optimism for the future,” Peterson-Sheptak said.
“We need to make sure we have the resources and people to support their success.” (StatePoint)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is a long-term lung disease that makes it hard to breathe.
Impacting 11.7 million people in the United States, many people think of it only as a disease that impacts people who smoke and use tobacco products, but long-term exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes and vapors from the workplace are also risk factors.
In fact, work-related exposures account for 10-20% of either respiratory symptoms or lung function impairment consistent with COPD.
To help people understand the many facets of COPD risk, the American Lung Association is launching a campaign to raise
awareness of occupational COPD.
As part of the campaign, they are sharing patient insights, along with information to help people identify workplace risk factors and signs of disease progression.
Knowing the Risk Factors
Mary Cohen, who lives with COPD, started having symptoms when working at a nail and hair salon.
“I did not realize that working in a hair and nail salon doing nails would put me at risk for lung disease, COPD,” says Cohen.

The leading industries and job types that increase risk for COPD include agriculture, mining and manufacturing, however many types of workplaces, from construction to welding, can potentially expose workers to harmful irritants that can contribute to developing COPD. Workplace exposures include:
• Secondhand smoke
• Mineral dusts like silica, coal and asbestos
• Organic dusts like cotton, wood and grains
• Metal or welding fumes like cadmium
• Diesel or exhaust fumes
• Asphalt, tar fumes, or vapor in roads or roofing
• Smoke from fires

Firearm violence has become the leading killer of children and young adults under 24, surpassing deaths from vehicle collisions since 2017.
And while daily headlines emphasize news of mass shootings, most firearms-related deaths and injuries are preventable and occur in a familiar place -- at home.
June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is not only calling attention to the sobering statistics, but is also offering tools for families, communities and governmental entities to help prevent gun violence. Parents can learn more at HealthyChildren.org.
Approximately 40% of U.S. households with children have firearms, of which 15% stored at least one firearm loaded and unlocked, the storage method with the highest risk.
“Firearms are pervasive in America, but we do have reason for hope,” said Dr. Lois K. Lee, a pediatric emergency medicine physi-
try did to improve motor vehicle safety. This is a public health epidemic that we can do something about, through a combination of regulation, legislation, education
cian who specializes in injury prevention. “Research has revealed effective ways to prevent or reduce the risks of harm, just as our coun-
and individual steps like securely storing firearms in the home.”
Pediatric practitioners are en-
couraged to counsel families, offer mental health screenings and promote secure firearm storage as part of routine visits. As with other consumer products, the AAP supports regulating firearms for safety and notes that national requirements could be established for safe storage, training, licensing, insurance coverage and registration.
State extreme risk protection order laws, also known as “red flag laws,” which prohibit individuals at risk of harming themselves or others from purchasing or owning a firearm by a court order, are also becoming more common.
Evidence shows that the risk of injury or death is greatly reduced when firearms are securely stored, unloaded and locked, with the ammunition locked in a separate place that youth can’t access.
It’s graduation season, and if you have a college-bound student in your life, you’re probably looking for great ways to honor all their achievements of the past four years while helping prepare them for future successes.
Consider this round-up of high school graduation gifts, by intended college major:
Music: College dorm rooms don’t always have a ton of space. For music majors, this can be a problem. Provide a solution with the CT-S1, a 61-key ultra-portable keyboard from Casio. Available in black, white or red to suit different styles, this great-sounding, stylish keyboard is designed for beginners and seasoned players alike, particularly for those who want to record their music and perform it live.
An easy one-button recorder allows players to capture their musical ideas, while strap pins and battery-operated capabilities mean they can take their songs anywhere they go, whether that be to a battle of the bands event, or to perform a
set at the campus coffee house.
Foreign languages: Will your student be majoring in a foreign language? With all those language
labs in their future, they’ll need a great set of headphones that keeps their ears comfortable, minimizes distractions by cancelling outside noise, and offers amazing sound quality so they can perfect all those tricky pronunciations. Look for long battery life, high fidelity audio and Bluetooth capabilities.
Health care: A new nursing and pharmacy calculator, the SP100USNU from Casio, is a practi-
cal calculator featuring quick operations that will assist in dosing of intravenous drip medication, finding body mass index, and calculating body surface area and estimated glomerular filtration rate.
This model is one of the first calculators to be
constructed inside an antimicrobial case approved to ISO 22196 standards, and features an easy-tosterilize silver-colored front plate. Ready for use right outside the box, your student will be prepared to both learn, as well as to apply their knowledge in laboratory work right away.
Art history: Bring your art history major’s studies out of the textbook and into the real world with a mem-
Unfortunately, 40% of U.S. households with children have firearms, of which 15% are stored in the least secure way. One study demonstrated that if 20% of parents who currently store their firearms unlocked instead stored their firearms and ammunition locked away separately, there would be an estimated decrease of up to 122 pediatric firearm-related fatalities and 201 injuries annually nationwide.
Because having firearms at home substantially increases the risk of suicide, homicide and unintentional shootings, the AAP also suggests that families consider storing firearms outside the home completely.
bership to the premier art museum in the city closest to where their campus is located.
Memberships often provide not only free admission to the museum, but exclusive invitations to one-of-a-kind events with artists, historians and other speakers, as well as special off-hours access to exhibits so they can get up close and personal with the artwork, without having to fight the crowds.
Journalism: In today’s multimedia landscape, budding journalists need to be more than crackerjack writers, they also need to be wellequipped to produce engaging video content.
A subscription to video editing software will help them acquire and maintain the skills they’ll need to succeed in the classroom now, and on-the-job when they graduate.
As your favorite student heads off for their freshman year of college, you can help pave the way for their academic success with the perfect graduation gift. (StatePoint)
“Even when they’ve been trained not to touch firearms, we know that young children are curious and will often pick up a firearm–and even pull the trigger–if they find it,” Dr. Lee said. “Make sure, wherever your child is going this summer for playdates and vacation–including the homes of relatives–that you ask about how firearms are secured in the home.
“You can frame this as a safety conversation and talk about food allergies and car seats, and then ask about how firearms are stored. But also think about other options if you have concerns–perhaps offer to meet at a park or museum, or invite their child over to your home to play.”
Between 2015 and 2022, there were at least 2,802 unintentional shootings by children age 17 and younger. These resulted in 1,083 deaths and 1,815 nonfatal firearm injuries, nearly all among other kids. And at least 895 preschoolers and toddlers found a firearm and unintentionally shot themselves or someone else during this time.
“Ultimately, we will need a multipronged approach to substantially decrease firearm injuries and deaths among U.S. youth,” Dr. Lee said. “This is a public health epidemic that requires urgent, deliberative action. We must do better–our children deserve it.” (StatePoint)
If you think saving for a down payment is your number one barrier to homeownership, it’s important to understand how down payments work, how much is necessary and what programs can help you secure the funds you need. To get you started, Freddie Mac is answering some frequently asked questions:
1. What is a down payment and how does it affect my mortgage? A down payment is the amount of money you pay up front when purchasing a home, and it’s generally calculated as a percentage of the total home price.
When you put more money down at the outset, the amount you need to borrow from your lender de-
creases, and so do your monthly mortgage payments. Although a larger down payment can be beneficial for this reason, it may not
be in your best interest if it would leave you in a compromised financial position with no cushion.
However, a smaller down payment can help you become a homeowner faster and begin building equity sooner.
2. How large should my down payment be? A Freddie Mac survey found that nearly one-third of prospective homebuyers believe you need to make a down payment of at least 20% to buy a home. This myth remains one of the largest perceived barriers to homeownership.
The truth is that the typical down payment is between 5% and 20%, and some mortgage programs make it possible to put down as little as 3%. Your down payment size will depend on your financial situation, your lender and your eligibility for different types of mortgages.
Bear in mind that if you put down less than 20% and have a conventional loan, you’ll need to budget for private mortgage insurance (PMI), an added insurance policy that protects the lender if you’re
unable to pay your mortgage. This monthly fee is rolled into your mortgage payment.
Expect to pay approximately $30 to $70 per month for every $100,000 you borrow. The good news? Many types of loans allow you to cancel your PMI once you’ve built 20% equity in your home.
You can use Freddie Mac’s down payment calculator at myhome. freddiemac.com/resources/calculators/down-payment to explore how different down payment amounts affect how much you pay each month and over the life of your loan.
3. Where can I turn for help? Struggling to save for a down payment? There are many forms of down payment assistance, including grants, mortgage credit certificates, individual development accounts, down payment assistance loans and even monetary gifts from family members.

Your home is an expression of you, your personality and your lifestyle. When it comes to personalizing your home’s aesthetic, try leaning into your senses to inspire change within your space.
Inspiration can be found everywhere around you – from taking cues from Mother Nature to “shopping” your own house or, with a little help from Air Wick, finding and incorporating your home’s signature scent.
Give yourself a residential refresh with these tips:
Rearrange Living Spaces
Breathing fresh air into a room doesn’t always require a complete overhaul, or even any construction or DIY projects. Sometimes all you need is a little rearranging. Shifting furniture to better suit your needs or let more natural light in can significantly improve the space’s aesthetic.
Additionally, the items you currently own are most reflective of your style; try “shopping” your own house by repurposing items from other areas or rooms to give them a fresh feel. When decor pieces are overused in one spot, they may feel brand new in a different space. These are practical and cost-effective tactics to create a new and inviting space for both you and any guests entering your home.
Introduce Plants and Greenery
When sourcing your design inspiration from nature, adding greenery is an inherent way to bring in the beauty and freshness of the great outdoors. To personalize your home with plants, visit a nursery or local flower shop and choose ones that are appealing to you based on their shape, color or size. (Continued On Page 19)
The health care system can feel uncoordinated and costly. One in 10 U.S. adults ration medication because they can’t afford their prescriptions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In fact, the more a patient must pay at the counter, the more likely they are to abandon their treatment. Other Americans simply lack convenient access to primary care providers and pharmacies, and go undertreated as a result.
Pharmacy services companies exist to fill these gaps in care. Because these companies sit in the middle of the health care delivery system, they have the unique ability to spot and solve problems across the supply chain to drive affordability and deliver improved clinical outcomes.
“Every day at Express Scripts, we use our clinical expertise and patient-centered programs to help the more than 100 million Americans we serve keep their health on track,” says Adam Kautzner, president of Express Scripts, a leading pharmacy services company.
Before filling your next prescription, check out these insights from Express Scripts:
• Check your coverage: At a time of rising drug costs and access barriers, some pharmacy services companies are helping people take their medications as prescribed. Express Scripts, for example, was the first in the industry to cap the out-of-pocket costs of insulin and other diabetic treatments, saving people more than $45 million in two years.
“A prescription drug doesn’t work if it’s priced out of reach,” says Kautzner. “Reducing out-of-pocket costs is the single best thing we can do to improve the health of people we serve.”
• Tools to stay adherent: Half of all treatments fail because people don’t take medication as prescribed and nearly one-quarter of hospitalizations are due to medication nonadherence, according to
the American Hospital Association. Further, chronic conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease have been on the rise for more than two decades – today, 60% of U.S. adults have at least one chronic condition. One of the biggest – and costliest – challenges with managing the rise of chronic conditions is ensuring patients get on and stay on the medicines they need.
Express Scripts is helping patients better understand and manage their conditions through comprehensive disease manage-
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States and it almost always begins during adolescence. Ac-
cording to leading medical advocates, pediatricians have a role to play in getting kids to quit vaping electronic cigarettes and using other tobacco products.
Ten percent of American students report using tobacco products, according to the FDA. And while there have been declines in the use of cigarettes among adolescents, the popularity of
e-cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco and nicotine products is on the rise. Smoking and vaping are both harmful to health, particularly to youth, whose brains are still developing and who are uniquely vulnerable to nicotine dependence.
That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has developed the Youth Tobacco Cessation Progressive Web
App. This new, free clinical decision resource, which can be used on a computer, tablet or offline mobile app, leads physicians through the following steps:
1. Ask: Screen for tobacco use with all youth, during every clinical encounter.
2. Counsel: Advise all youth who use tobacco to quit and have them set a quit date within
two weeks.
3. Treat: Link adolescents to behavioral treatment extenders and prescribe pharmacologic support when indicated. After the visit, follow up to assess progress and offer support.
The web app also provides a flowchart for clinical interactions, links to product descriptions, an AAP policy and clinical report, sample counseling statements, behavioral support options, such as texting services, quitlines and online resources, and detailed information on pharmacologic support, including nicotine replacement therapy.
There is currently little data on successful youth tobacco treatment strategies. In the meantime, clinicians can leverage existing literature and promising practices to support tobacco cessation in young people. To learn more and to access the Youth Tobacco Cessation Progressive Web App, visit aap.org/ HelpKidsQuit.
Tobacco use and nicotine dependence are significant health concerns. Pediatricians can use their vital, trusted role as a source of expertise, support and guidance to provide teens with confidential tobacco cessation care. (StatePoint)
ment, including condition-specific coaching, tracking medication adherence, and digital tools.
“By taking medications as directed and working with their pharmacist, patients stay healthier longer and spend less on health care, requiring fewer emergency room visits, hospitalizations and medical tests,” says Stephanie Smith Cooney, PharmD, senior director of independent pharmacy affairs at Express Scripts.
• Understand your pharmacy benefits: Prescription drug coverage is the most frequently utilized benefit that employers and health plans offer. On average, a pharmacy benefit is used approximately 11 times a year. Unfortunately, pharmacy care benefits, like all healthcare benefits, can be confusing.
That’s why pharmacy services companies are taking steps to give patients greater clarity. Starting this year, prescriptions from Express Scripts include an easy-tounderstand digital pharmacy benefits statement with drug price information, out-ofpocket costs and the value delivered.
• Pharmacy access: Pharmacists often fill care gaps in their communities, particularly where there are shortages of physicians, such as in rural areas. One in five Americans live in rural areas, yet less than 10% of physicians practice in these communities. This means longer wait times to get an appointment and more difficulty accessing pharmacies.
A new effort called the IndependentRx Initiative, is working to expand pharmacy care services to widely include such care as smoking cessation support, behavioral health screenings, biometric screenings, routine vaccinations and the administration of life-saving naloxone. The Express Scripts program will also increase what it pays rural independent pharmacies to make sure their businesses can continue to serve their communities.
To learn more, visit evernorth.com/affordableforall. Ensuring equitable access to affordable, quality pharmacy care and health services will not only improve health, but it will also help individuals, families and communities thrive. (StatePoint)
It’s been four years since the collective trauma of the pandemic created widespread grief, anxiety and isolation, but the psychological wounds of this period have not fully healed.
The American Psychological Association reports continued elevated rates of anxiety and depression among Americans, and mental health experts say that negative self-talk plays a large role in these conditions and other psychological issues. The good news? Individuals can work on subtracting a harmful inner monologue from the equation.
“Simple tools can help people break the cycle of negative selftalk and find some inner peace,” says Elizabeth Scott, PhD, a wellness coach, health educator and author of “8 Keys to Stress Management.”
That’s why Pilot Corporation of
America (Pilot Pen) is supporting the Erase Self-Negativity Initiative in partnership with key mental health and wellness experts, including Dr. Scott, and with guidance from America’s largest grassroots mental health organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
As part of the initiative, Dr. Scott and NAMI have created a guided exercise to help individuals begin their journey toward erasing the disempowering influence that negative self-talk has on their lives. The exercises include writing down the negative beliefs one holds about themself and then de-
stroying or erasing the writing, a practice that has been found by research to be helpful in minimizing those beliefs.
“Simply externalizing these negative thoughts empowers us to rewrite our narrative and opens the door to giving ourselves more grace,” says Dr. Scott.
Dr. Scott stresses that similar to maintaining physical health, consistency is key with mental health. This is why every April 10 will be recognized as National Erase SelfNegativity Day and the initiative will use the 10th of each month, as a day to start or revisit the writing exercise and reflect on personal progress.
Here’s what’s needed to get started:
1. A quiet, restful location, 2. A desire to create change
3. Paper
4. A FriXion erasable pen, which
offers more than just the ability to write and erase completely; but also symbolizes the power individuals have to change things and write more positivity into their story.
The Erase Self-Negativity Worksheet can be found by visiting eraseselfnegativity.com. For additional resources to understand how common, and treatable mental health issues can be, visit nami.org.
“While we can’t control the negative messages we might receive from the outside world, we can work on what we tell ourselves. With just a few minutes of quiet time, we can harness the transformative power of writing in a way that will challenge the damaging assumptions we hold about ourselves and foster more self-compassion,” says Dr. Scott. Military Appreciation Month is an annual reminder to honor the sacrifices and contributions of the people who serve in the U.S. military, and to recognize the importance of the support networks and camaraderie that boost their morale throughout their journey.
This year, the USO is continuing its long history of bridging understanding between service members and civilians with its “Human to Human” campaign, which is intended to build empathy for the sacrifices made by service members and their families, and to highlight the human aspect of military service.
As part of the campaign, the USO brought together seven pairs of strangers at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Each pair consisted of one service
member and one civilian, asking each other questions printed on cards the USO provided.

The conversations were surprising, powerful and unifying, with moments of realization, connection and even a few tears.
Civilians who participated say they walked away from the experience with a new understanding of how service members find strength in the support of others.
Here are a few ways you can join the USO in celebrating service members during Military Appreciation Month:
• Send a message of gratitude and support to those who serve.
• Watch the “Human to Human” video to experience the connection between service members and ci-
vilians when they discover they are more alike than they expected.
• Spread awareness and show appreciation for the people who serve in America’s military in person and online. Use the hashtag #MilitaryAppreciationMonth.

Whether you’re buying a fixer-upper or updating your current home, renovations will improve the functionality of your property and increase its value. Here’s your guide for making the process successful:
Set a goal: Prioritize renovations that help you meet your goals. For example, if you’d like to elevate your home’s aesthetic appeal, consider projects like landscaping the front yard or refurbishing a highly-trafficked room. If you’re more interested in guarding your home against natural disasters, consider exterior updates such as replacing the roof or windows.
Find inspiration: Browse home improvement magazines, websites and social media platforms for visual inspiration. Keep a collection of images and ideas that you can use to communicate with your contractor or designer.
Calculate return on investment: Certain projects can substantially reduce your utility bills while others can make your home more valuable when it’s time to sell. When calculating your renovation
budget, don’t forget to factor in the projected return on investment.
Build a budget: Speaking of budgets, you can use Freddie Mac’s budget worksheet available at my-
have built up in your home through refinancing or taking out a second mortgage can help cover the costs. Here are three mortgage products offered by Freddie Mac specifically designed to finance renovations:
home.freddiemac.com/resources/ budget-worksheet to help you avoid overspending.
Be sure to include a contingency reserve to pay for the inevitable unexpected costs that emerge along the way. If you’re short on needed funds, explore financing options with your lender. In some cases, accessing the equity you
• CHOICERenovation mortgages allow you to finance a wide range of renovations, including roof replacement, kitchen and bath remodels, and additions.
• CHOICEReno eXPress mortgages finance smaller-scale renovations and, like CHOICERenovation, offer the flexibility to work with your own contractors and
those at big-box home improvement stores.
• GreenCHOICE Mortgages can finance energy efficiency improvements.
Select your contractor: The contractor is critical to the success of your renovation. Get recommendations from trusted sources, including friends, family and verified online resources. Meet with multiple contractors to discuss your project and request bids to gain a more thorough understanding of project costs and which contractor can best meet your goals. Of course, don’t forget to verify their qualifications. Ask for project references and documentation to confirm they have the proper licensing and liability insurance. Once you’ve found the right contractor, make sure your agreement is in writing to avoid potential disputes. The contract should contain a budget, scope of work and payment schedule that all parties have agreed upon.
Develop your project: Work with your contractor to develop a realistic timeline for your project that
builds in extra time for unexpected delays. Before the work starts, you should also work with your contractor to obtain any permits needed and start sourcing materials.
Start building: Regular meetings with your contractor can help ensure that everything is on schedule, and that you are in the loop on any plan modifications. If changes are needed, make sure they’re submitted in writing as a change order.
No matter how thorough your specifications are, you should be prepared for unexpected issues along the way. So be flexible and work with a trusted contractor to find practical solutions to issues that arise. Conduct a final inspection once all renovations have been completed and make sure to address any issues with the contractor before making your final payment.
Home renovations can make your home safer, more beautiful, more eco-friendly and more valuable, and with the right preparation and execution, you can complete your project on time and under budget. (StatePoint)

Nestled in the heart of Gujarat, the city of Morbi is a land of rich heritage, historical significance, and architectural marvels.
The city is dotted with numerous palaces and mansions that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, showcasing the grandeur and opulence of the erstwhile rulers of the region.
One such architectural masterpiece is the Mani Mahal, which is a prominent landmark in the city and a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.
In this travel feature, we will delve deep into the history and legacy of this fascinating palace and explore its stunning architecture and intricate craftsmanship.
Mani Mahal was built in the early 19th century by Waghji Thakor, the then ruler of Morbi. The palace was constructed for his queen, Rani Biniya, and was named after a precious diamond that was believed to have been embedded in the palace walls.
The diamond was later lost, but the name Mani Mahal continued to be used for the palace.
The palace was designed by a team of skilled architects and craftsmen who brought to life the vision of Waghji Thakor.
The palace was built in the traditional Rajput architectural style and was adorned with intricate carvings, frescoes, and ornate designs.
The palace served as the royal residence of the Thakors of Morbi for many years until it was converted into a museum in 1947.
Today, Mani Mahal is a popular tourist attraction that draws visitors from all over the world to witness the grandeur and beauty of the palace.

The palace is spread over three floors and is connected by a series of staircases and corridors.
The upper floors of the palace are adorned with intricate jharokhas (overhanging balconies), which offer stunning views of the cityscape.
The palace is built using local materials such as sandstone, marble, and wood, and the craftsmen have utilized various techniques such as carving, inlay work, and frescoes to create stunning designs and patterns.

“This (election) is also like a festival, so I don’t have a problem voting in the heat,” said Lakshmi Bansal, a housewife.
Saturday’s voting in 58 constituencies, including seven in New Delhi, will complete polling for 89.5% of 543 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The remaining 57 seats will be decided on June 1, wrapping up a six-week election. The votes will be counted on June 4.
President Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar were among the early voters. Opposition Congress party leaders, Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, also voted in New Delhi.
Mehbooba Mufti, a former top elected official of Indian-controlled Kashmir, held a protest with her supporters Saturday claiming that scores of her party workers were detained by police to prevent them from voting. Mufti, the chief of the People’s Democratic Party who is contesting the parliamentary election in the Anantnag-Rajouri district, said she complained to election officials.
In West Bengal state, workers belonging to the All India Trinamool Congress party blocked the car of Agnimitra Paul, one of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party candidates, as she proceeded to vote in the Medinipur constituency. The two parties are rivals in the state and their activists often clash on the streets.
Trinamool leader and state’s top elected official Mamta Banerjee accused the BJP of launching an attack that left one activist dead on Friday in the Purba Medinipur district. Several houses and shops were burned in the area, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted Banerjee as saying.
Suvendu Adhikari, a BJP leader in the state, accused Trinamool members of attacking and killing an activist on Thursday, an accusation rejected by his rivals, PTI reported.
The election is considered one of
the most consequential in India’s history and will test Modi’s political dominance. If Modi wins, he’ll be only the second Indian leader to retain power for a third term, after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.
Most polls predict a win for the BJP, which is up against a broad opposition alliance led by the Congress and powerful regional parties. But a less-than-expected turnout in the previous five rounds of voting has left some doubts about the BJP’s projected margin of victory.
“When the polls began it felt like a one-horse race, with Modi leading from the front. But now we are seeing some kind of shift,” political analyst Rasheed Kidwai said.
“The opposition is doing better than expected and it appears that
Modi’s party is rattled. That’s the reason you see Modi ramping up anti-Muslim rhetoric to polarize voters.”
Kidwai said the opposition had challenged Modi by centering its campaign narrative on social justice and rising unemployment, making the contest closer than expected.
Modi ran his campaign like a presidential race, a referendum on his 10 years of rule. He claimed to help the poorest with charity, free health care, providing toilets in their homes, and helping women get free or cheap cooking gas cylinders.
But he changed tack after a poor turnout in the first round of the
election and began stirring Hindu nationalism by accusing the Congress party of pandering to minority Muslims for votes.
Hindus account for 80%, and Muslims nearly 14%, of India’s over 1.4 billion people.
Manish Bhatia, a New Delhi voter, said that “politics on the basis of caste and religion is dangerous for the country,” adding that voting should be based on how candidates perform.
Nearly 970 million voters — more than 10% of the world’s population — were eligible to elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years.
Voters’ relative apathy has surprised some analysts. In the five rounds of polling, turnout ranged between 62.2% to 69.16% — averaging 65.9%. By comparison, India’s 2019 national election registered the highest-ever turnout — 67.11%. Modi’s BJP won 303 seats in Parliament in 2019.
Modi’s inauguration of a massive Hindu temple for the god Rama, his massive roadshows and big public rallies raised the BJP’s hopes of a massive surge in voters’ support.
The current prime minister came
to power in 2014, dislodging the Congress party that governed the country for nearly 55 years after India won independence from British colonialists in 1947.
Before the election, the opposition INDIA alliance was seen bickering, but it has since held together, particularly after two chief ministers of two opposition-controlled states were sent to jail on corruption charges. Both deny the accusations.
One of them — New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal — has since been released on bail and returned to the campaign trail.
In March, Gandhi completed a 6,713-kilometer (4,171-mile) walk across the country, starting in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur, to raise awareness on issues of poverty, unemployment, and democracy with voters.
“The walk helped Gandhi boost his image as a serious politician among the voters, and that is helping the opposition,” Kidwai, the analyst, said.

Live plants offer multiple benefits, like naturally purifying the air, and studies have shown numerous therapeutic benefits of spending time with nature. Therefore, designing with natural elements, like house plants or flowers, can bring a sense of serenity into your home.
Find Your “Scentscape”
A home upgrade rooted in nature includes more than just what you can see and feel, it also includes engaging the sense of smell. One of the latest home decor trends, “scentscaping,” is growing in popularity as a way for individuals to enhance the ambiance of
their homes through tailored scent.
“Scent is an often-overlooked aspect of design,” said Egypt Sherrod, HGTV personality who is both an interior designer and real estate broker, and Air Wick partner.
“People tour homes and experience spaces with all their senses.
It adds a new layer to home personalization, as an authentic fragrance experience often heightens the aura of your space beyond its physical layout.
Scentscaping is the perfect way to add a bespoke vibe for your home that reflects your personal style, in turn creating a welcoming atmosphere.” With innovative de-
vices designed to deliver carefully blended scents like Air Wick’s Advanced Plug-In Scented Oil, you can enjoy long-lasting pulses of scents inspired by nature in the comfort of your home for up to 60 days on low setting.
With anti-fading technology, an on-demand boost button and adjustable intensity settings, you’ll notice the fragrances from the first drop to the last.
Introducing color to a room can transform its look, and the scale of change is up to you. You might repaint the entire space, simply paint
an accent wall or even just spruce up a corner with a pop of color. Incorporating accessories or decorative elements with new colors can also create some variety, such as including pops of seasonal-inspired colors in artwork and textiles.
A room’s lighting is an important detail for personalizing the type of mood and ambiance you are trying to achieve. Swapping out light fixtures for dimmers, for example, can create a brand new atmosphere, allowing you to adjust the light to the time of day and for your intended experience. (Continued On Page 24)
Stroke can happen to anyone – it happens to more than 800,000 people every year in the United States. Knowing the signs of stroke and how to prevent it can help protect you or your loved ones from disabilities caused by stroke.
That’s why the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health, created the “Know Stroke” campaign to disrupt stroke and help people in your community who might be at risk of stroke through prevention, treatment and research.
“Seconds are critical when someone is having a stroke,” said Dr. Clinton Wright, vascular neurologist and director of the Division of Clinical Research at NINDS. “It’s important to know the signs.”
Know Stroke
Most strokes happen when the brain stops getting the blood supply it needs to work properly. Without enough blood flow, the brain starts to lose function. Two million brain cells die every minute during stroke, which is why stroke preven-
tion is important. Preventing stroke protects you from developing disabilities that stroke may cause like speech problems, limited movement and memory loss.
Know the Signs of Stroke
Stroke symptoms often appear suddenly and can be easily missed. Treating stroke by getting to a hospital quickly is critical to prevent brain damage. If you see these signs, act F.A.S.T.:
• Face drooping: One side of the face droops when smiling
• Arm weakness: If both arms are
raised, one drifts down
• Speech difficulty: Slurred or strange speech
• Time to call 911: Do not drive yourself or your loved one – call an ambulance immediately if you notice one or more of these signs
Learning these stroke symptoms can help disrupt stroke before it disrupts your (or someone else’s) life. Other signs to look for include sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty seeing, difficulty walking and severe headache, especially one that occurs in a split second, called a thunder-clap headache. Remem-
ber stroke is always an emergency that requires fast action and medical treatment.
Know How to Prevent Stroke
Some medical conditions and lifestyle considerations can put you at higher risk for stroke. For example, high blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke. Stroke can be prevented by effectively treating high blood pressure as well as high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, smoking and obesity. There are several ways to lower your risk for stroke:
• Treat high blood pressure
• Exercise regularly
• Eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight
• Manage diabetes
• Quit smoking
• Control cholesterol
Doing your best to prevent stroke from happening is the No. 1 way to lower your risk of disabilities caused by stroke. Even if you have had a stroke before, you can still take steps to reduce your risk of more strokes. Treating these risk factors may also reduce the chance of developing age-related demen-
tia. For more information on the connection between stroke risk factors and dementia, visit mindyourrisks.nih.gov.
Know How to Recover from Stroke
As much as prevention helps lower the chances of having a stroke, it can still happen. Rehabilitation therapy is usually started in the hospital within 48 hours after a stroke. Health care workers help stroke patients relearn skills that were lost from the stroke or teach them new ways to compensate for remaining disabilities. Researchers continue to investigate how patients can restore blood flow to the brain and how to protect brain cells after stroke to improve recovery.
Know More
When you know the signs of stroke, you can help prevent a lifechanging disability for yourself or someone you care about. You could even save a life. Visit stroke. nih.gov to learn more about stroke risks, prevention and research.

(Continued From Page 01) Shreyas Iyer ended KKR’s decade-long wait and led his team to a titletriumph with an 8-wicket win on Sunday night. It was a one-sided affair where SRH failed to match the intensity and lost the third time against KKR this season. Kolkata bowled out Hyderabad for IPL’s lowest total of 113 in a final as Australia’s premier paceman Mitchell Starc returned figures of 2-14 to live up to his top billing in the cash-rich league. In reply, KKR chased down the target in just 10.3 overs with Venkatesh Iyer smashing an unbeaten 52 runs off just 26 balls to make it a cakewalk for his side.
Batting great Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on KKR for their all-round show in the tournament for clinching the title as he mentioned Gautam Gambhir and KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan in his
congratulatory post.
“What a consistent performance by @KKRiders! Their batters started the campaign with a bang, but it was the bowlers who took centre stage during the latter stages of the tournament. All their bowlers chipped in tonight, taking wickets and making the run chase rela-
tively easy. Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff on winning the third trophy for their franchise! @GautamGambhir and @iamsrk,” Tendulkar wrote on X. Meanwhile, he also talked about the Sunrisers who played a fearless brand of cricket in the league stage.
“Commiserations to @SunRisers, who very often lit up the IPL over the last 2 months, but couldn’t go the distance in the final. #KKRvSRH #IPL2024 #IPLFinal,” he added.
Legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also congratulated KKR for being the standout season as he also shared a heartwarming message for Shah Rukh for immense success in cinema and cricket in the past couple of years. “Congratulations to @KKRiders on being crowned @IPL 2024 champions. They’ve been the standout team all thru the season. Kudos to @ SunRisers for a stellar run - but the better team prevailed today. Special shoutout to @GautamGambhir for his fearless mentorship, and to the King of Hearts @iamsrk for his success in both cinema and cricket this year! #IPL2024 #KKR #SRH #KKRvsSRH,” Yuvraj wrote on X.
“Many congratulations @KKRiders on a 3rd IPL title. As @iamsrk says, Kisi cheez ko dil se chaho toh poori kaaynat use tumse milaane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai. Special credit to @ShreyasIyer15 for leading the side brilliantly in the field and executing the plans so well. Its great to see earlier Nehra ji and now Gautam succeed as mentors and win their team championships. Well done. #IPL2024,” he wrote on X. Former India allrounder Irfan Pathan pointed out the success formula of KKR which helped them clinch the season. “Congratulations @KKRiders @ ShreyasIyer15 @GautamGambhir @abhisheknayar1 #bharatarun #chandupandit When you have solid bowling group with 6 wicket taking options with two all rounders in it you will win the trophy,” Pathan wrote. Many drivers have difficulty selecting the best tire for their vehicle and driving needs. For many, tire selection starts at the size then jumps to what’s in stock or what’s on sale.
However, there are many factors to consider when you need new tires for your car, truck or SUV. Buying tires is an investment, so it’s important to make the right decision.
You may be surprised to learn determining the best tire is as much about the driver as it is the vehicle. Choosing the right tire requires considering where you drive, how you drive and what you drive.
You can explore these and other factors in the Treadwell tire-buying recommendation tool, which is based on a decade of data and realworld test results.
This tire recommendation tool combines millions of data points from tire safety checks and Discount Tire’s own test track where intensive tests are performed on tires from all major manufacturers, along with the driver’s location,
vehicle and driving habits, to generate a selection of personalized tire recommendations from a variety of brands.
With more than 20,000 different
tions tailored to their needs.
If you think it may be time to replace your tires, start with the Treadwell tool and consider these five expert tips to simplify the pro-
models of tires available for the everyday driver, it’s no wonder tire-buying can be a mystifying process. However, tools like this can help drivers make the most informed choice while having access to the same information tire technicians use in-stores alongside their expertise. The result: empowering drivers with information and op-
cess from the technicians at your local Discount Tire.
The type of driver you are, the kind of ride you want and how long you expect your tires to last are all factors in choosing the right tires. For example, thrill drivers might prefer tires with high levels of grip and
responsiveness while those who stick to long road trips are better suited for long-lasting, smooth riding tires.
Your location and the weather you regularly encounter when you drive influence the type of tires you need. For example, drivers in the upper Midwest require tires that perform well in extreme cold and winter weather while those in humid climates like the Southeast need tires that perform well in wet conditions.
Purchasing tires is an investment. Drivers should look at the cost of their tires over time, rather than the cost up front. In the long run, it may be more cost-effective to purchase a higher quality tire based on multiple factors like increased safety, improved handling and ride quality, as well as cost per mile.
Tire specifications can vary depending on the type of car you own. For electric vehicles and vehicles carrying heavy loads, it’s
critical to know how much weight your tires can safely support. Only install tires that meet or exceed the load requirements for your ride.
Two of the most important considerations when replacing tires are tread depth and tire age.
Your tires’ tread depth directly impacts your vehicle’s ability to stop. Tires are reaching the end of their life at 4/32 inches of tread. However, your tires may be underperforming even if more tread remains, particularly in rain or extreme weather conditions.
When it comes to replacing your tires, you should also consider their age. Because the materials used break down over time, experts recommend replacing tires that are six years or more past the date of manufacture.
To access the tool and complete the online survey to determine the right tires for you, visit DiscountTire.com/Treadwell. (Family Features)

Volunteering has always been a big part of Shelley Brosnan’s life, whether she was serving in her children’s school or in their Fairfax, Va., community.
When Brosnan retired, increasing her volunteer efforts was a natural next step. Serving with Volunteer Fairfax, an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program, she spends about 10 hours a week teaching new volunteers about helping older adults age in place, providing food for those in need and extending the capacity of local nonprofits.
“There’s so much to love about volunteering,” Brosnan said. “Providing purpose and serving the community are obvious reasons, but the connections I make with others are one of the greatest benefits. I just really love helping people and I’ve made friends through volunteering.”
Brosnan’s experience with volun-
teering is backed by science. According to the Mayo Clinic, having a solid social network improves both physical and mental health as it can boost happiness, increase your sense of belonging and improve self-confidence. As people age, many social avenues from earlier phases of life, such as school and work, no longer exist and making friends can be difficult. The Mayo Clinic suggests volunteering as a beneficial way to make friends and improve social well-being.
“Volunteering fosters more connected and less isolated older adults,” said Atalaya Sergi, direc-
tor at AmeriCorps Seniors. “Our research, focused on the impact of our programs, finds volunteering can provide positive health and well-being outcomes. In our study, 84% of participants reported stable or improving health and 88% had lower feelings of isolation within one year of volunteering. Each year, we match more than 143,000 Americans with volunteer opportunities, helping build connections and address societal issues, nurturing real relationships that help people become both happier and more fulfilled.”
Adults ages 55 and up, like Brosnan, can be matched with local volunteer organizations fitting their interests, skills and availability through AmeriCorps Seniors, the nation’s largest national service program for older adults, which offers three signature programs,
RSVP, the Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program. Brosnan, an RSVP volunteer, and others nationwide play crucial roles in community resilience and connectedness.
The time commitment for all programs is flexible, ranging from a few hours to 40 hours per week.
Research studies like the Harvard University Study of Adult Development, found that older adults who invest in, care for and develop the next generation are three times as likely to be happy as those who did not. Foster Grandparent volunteers Francois Mwabi and Jerome Menyo, based in Kentwood, Mich., are two more examples of the difference it can make to serve.
Mwabi and Menyo attest to the joy of impacting youth by passing on their wisdom and sharing their culture and language with students, many of whom are refugees
from different parts of Africa just as Mwabi and Menyo themselves were several years ago. The two volunteers are so popular among the students and staff that teachers had to work out a schedule for all their students to be able to spend time with them.
One of the reasons the program has such a positive impact is the intergenerational connections it helps establish. Benefits abound not only for the young, but particularly for the volunteers.
“We love being here because of the environment and the students who study here,” Menyo said. “The teachers like us. I help students who speak my language. I enjoy it and they enjoy it, too.”

Summer is the time to get outside and remember the importance of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed as a family. Encouraging children at an early age to participate in outdoor exploration can help foster lifelong skills.
For example, research published in the “International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health” found associations between nature exposure and improved cognitive function, brain activity, blood pressure, mental health, physical activity and sleep. What’s more, kids who play and take part in outdoor adventures learn skills like problem solving, according to the American Academy of Pediatricians.
However, for many families with little ones, this summer might be their first foray into activities like exploring playgrounds or enjoying backyard campouts.
Opportunities to be more active outdoors bring obvious benefits. With that in mind, it’s important that families embark on these activities with the proper fuel.
All the energy kids burn playing outdoors and taking on new adventures can work up an appetite, making it an opportune time to introduce new foods. It might even be a little one’s first time trying seasonal fruits and veggies that can help nourish family playtime.
“A healthy curiosity and freedom to explore are essential ingredients for successful adventures, but fueling all of that fun is equally important,” said Sarah Smith-Simpson, PhD, principal food scientist at Gerber. “Kids need well-balanced nutrition from a variety of sources to fuel their summertime play.” Ensure your family is ready to
make memories and enjoy the exciting adventures ahead with these tips from Smith-Simpson: Get Colorful with Fruits and Veggies
Serving a rainbow of colors with an assortment of fruits and veggies means nutrient-rich snacks that are equal parts flavorful and fun. One of the best parts about fruits is they’re easily transportable to bring along for warm days exploring a nearby park. They’re perfect for a quick snack on the go – just cut them according to your child’s age and developmental stage to avoid hazards like choking then pack them in a small cooler to keep
from spoiling. For preschool-age children, a variety of fresh produce can help them practice color recognition while enjoying favorite flavors. Stocking your refrigerator and pantry with apples, oranges, bananas, green and purple grapes, blueberries, blackberries and more allows children to explore a world of nutrition with bright colors that catch their attention.
Pack Plenty and a Variety of Snacks
It’s the time of year when infants and young children need extra fuel for playtime, making it important for parents to offer a variety of nutritious foods and flavors. A key part of inspiring exploration in young children begins with nutrient-rich snacks that help fuel their adventures. Introducing diverse foods can help expand palates and provides a wide range of nutrients to support the entire family.
When introducing foods into a child’s diet, consistency is key. Experts say babies may need to try a new food up to 10 times before they like it. With a variety of Clean Label Project-certified snacks, Gerber offers solutions you can incorporate into little ones’ diets and bring
along for family fun. Some snacks to consider for ages 12 months and over are toddler pouches in Apple Mango Strawberry and Banana Blueberry. For babies in the crawling stage, consider Lil’ Crunchies Mild Cheddar snacks.
Hydrate on the Go
Avoid dehydration by ensuring you’re bringing enough water for the entire family on all your summertime trips, whether they’re around the block or across the country. Use refillable bottles for mom and dad, and for little ones, be sure to pack non-spill sippy cups for toddlers that help avoid messes. Fill a larger container with clean water from home you can use to refill everyone’s cups, bottles and canteens to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Spring is nature’s cue to renew and refresh. Whether you’re looking to add value for potential sale or simply create a more comfortable living space, you can make the most of the season and breathe new life into your home with projects that provide a high return on investment (ROI).
Consider these top home renovation projects to tackle this spring from the experts at Westlake Royal Building Products – a leader in innovation, design and production of exterior and interior building products including siding, trim, mouldings, roofing, stone, windows, outdoor living and more – based on the 2024 Cost vs. Value Report from “Remodeling Magazine.”
Remodel the Kitchen and Bathroom
The average seller can expect an 96.1% return on a light touch to the kitchen, according to the report, and 73.7% on a modest bathroom renovation. Because personal preferences can vary widely among buyers, minor
upgrades can provide a higher ROI than large, upscale remodels. A few easy ways to refresh your kitchen or bathroom include updating shelving or adding new hardware. Decorative trim and mouldings are also costeffective ways to add visual interest.
Upgrade with Stone Veneer
As natural and textured home trends continue, homeowners are gravitating toward stone veneer, or manufactured stone, as it can replicate the look of real
stone, adding comfort, character and beauty to homes. An option like Versetta Stone from Westlake Royal Building Products offers the authentic, handcrafted look of stone in a panelized format that’s easy to install with nails and screws.

Consider updating old lighting fixtures with new ones to enhance the presence of natural light or changing the bulb wattage to further impact the mood.
Embrace the Scent of the Season
If you tend to make frequent edits to your home’s design, you may also find the idea of experimenting with different fragrances appealing. A short-term scent can be ideal for seasonal swaps, like trading fresh spring blooms for sweet summer citrus, for example. Lasting for up to 45 days on low setting, Air Wick’s Essential Mist Diffuser fills the room with a gentle, fragrant mist with natu-
ral essential oils so you can set it and forget it.
Adjustable settings are included on the device, and the cordless and portable design allow it to blend seamlessly into any home decor. Explore more inspiring ideas for incorporating a breath of fresh air into your home at airwick.us.
Scentscaping to Give Your Home a Personalized Style
Achieving your perfect scentscape begins with nature-inspired fragrances, including classics like White Sage + Mahogany, Lavender + Waterlily and Eucalyptus + Wild
Berry. If sweeter scents are your preference, consider enticing blends like Pink Watermelon + Mimosa, Lush Honeysuckle + Raspberry or Hawaiian Guava + Tropical Flowers. To establish a one-of-a-kind scentscape for your home, start with these tips from Sherrod:
1. Identify your scent preferences, whether leaning toward citrus, spicy, fruity, floral or woody notes.
2. Consider the scent’s intensity and the scent level you and your guests find pleasing.
3. If you plan on creating room-specific scents, or want to use different fragrances in each room, consider how these scents interact with one another to harmonize the scents with contrasts that add dimension.
4. Consider rotating your seasonal scents to freshen up your home and bring new energy to your space at different times of the year.
5. Maintain a scent balance so different scents do not overpower each other. Rather, create a soft and pleasing aroma that establishes inviting spaces throughout your home.

There’s also no need to paint, coat or seal once installed. Ideal for its ability to add texture and dimension throughout both home interior (accent walls and fireplaces) and exterior applications (siding, entryways and walkways), stone veneer – which comes with a 153.2% ROI – can influence mood, emotion and energy levels while serving as a focal point of your home’s design.
Install
Depending on the harshness of winter in your area and the age of your home, you may notice certain windows have developed drafts, allowing cold air to enter and heat to escape. Replacing drafty or outdated windows with modern, energy-efficient models is one of the most effective ways to enhance your home’s energy efficiency. Additionally, a vinyl window replacement brings approximately 67.1% ROI.
In some cases, applying a fresh coat of paint is enough to refresh your home. However, if you’re looking to enhance your home’s curb appeal while making a long-term impact, consider installing new siding or replacing existing siding. Because vinyl siding serves as an additional layer of insulation, improving the energy efficiency of your heating and cooling systems, it offers a 80.2% ROI.
Weather-resistant, low-maintenance siding like Celect Cellular Composite Siding, which is now available in on-trend colors including Imperial Red, a robust shade of red; Deep Pewter, a compellingly modern forest green; and Timberland, a rich, natural brown, won’t warp, sag or buckle and is built to withstand even the harshest weather conditions. Its patented interlocking joints provide a seamless look and it’s easy to install in small spaces, like along a knee or pony wall.
If you want to entertain guests outside, spring is a perfect time to get your patio or deck ready. While a new coat of stain can update your existing deck’s appearance and help protect it, spring is also an ideal time to build a deck if your home doesn’t currently have one. When choosing a decking material, cost and maintenance are two factors to consider. Composite decking offers a 68.2% ROI and is low maintenance as it’s not susceptible to cracking, warping and weather damage.

The largest melting pot
The United States is a melting pot of languages, and among the myriad tongues spoken, Indian languages hold a significant place. With a growing Indian-American population, the linguistic landscape of the US has been enriched by the diverse languages from the Indian subcontinent. This article delves into the top five Indian languages that resonate through the homes and communities across the United States.
Hindi

Even the legendary director SS Rajamouli also poured appreciation on this short film for its win.
At the same time, a Malayalam film titled “All We Imagine As Light” has made history by being the first Indian film in 30 years to qualify for the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival.

onstrates the growing influence of South Indian cinema on the global stage.

Turbo marks Mammootty’s third release in the year 2024 after his films Bramayugam and Abraham Ozler, where he played an extended cameo role alongside Jayaram.
By: Entertainment DeskMammootty starrer Turbo opened to a whopping Rs 6.2 crore on Thursday. The film, however, might see a drop in its day two collection as the Malayalam action comedy has earned around Rs 2.71 crore, as per early estimates by Sacnilk.
On Day 1, Turbo had earned Rs 17.3 crore at the worldwide box office. The makers took to X to share, “#Turbo grossed 17.3 crores worldwide on Day 1! Such a humongous opening across the globe, thanks to our incredible audience for the endless love & support.”
Turbo marks the veteran star’s third release this year after Bramayugam and Abraham Ozler, where he was seen in an extended cameo alongside Jayaram.
Despite the anticipated drop, the film has already managed to outdo the two-day collection of Mam-
mootty’s other 2024 releases.
Turbo, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 70 crore, revolves around Jose, played by Mammootty, who is forced to relocate to Chennai from Kerala. While Jose reaches Chennai, a bunch of surprises await him such as the character of Raj B Shetty and others. The film, upon its release, garnered praises for Mammootty’s performance at the age of 72. However, the movie’s poor script failed to keep the audience hooked.
In his review, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote, “From the outset, Turbo suffers from poor writing, exacerbated by unimpressive moments and “jokes” that mostly don’t land.
Despite the instances being all too familiar, none manage to leave an impression or evoke excitement, except for the stunt sequences, which owe their success entirely to the technical team, especially stunt master Phoenix Prabhu.
As the film progresses, writer Midhun Manuel Thomas’ script continues to decline, with his attempts to balance mass, comedy and drama
mostly backfiring due to consistently weak writing.”
Turbo, directed by Vysakh, is written by Midhun Manuel Thomas. Apart from Mammootty, the film also stars Kannada actor Raj B Shetty and Telugu comedian Sunil, marking their debut in Mollywood.
Anjana Jayaprakash is also seen in a pivotal role in the Mammootty starrer. The movie is produced by the leading star himself under his banner Mammootty Kampany.
This year has been eventful for Mollywood with the success of films like Premalu, Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham and Aavesham.
The movies went on to enter the highest-grossing Malayalam films list. It needs to be seen if Mammootty’s latest film manages to make the cut.

The movie is directed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim fame and backed by Lyca Productions.
Amitabh Bachchan, who last worked with Rajinikanth in the 1991 film Hum, shared the update on the project on his personal blog.
‘But ever the dissatisfaction…’
“Another day at work comes to an end and the end too of this project, for me ..But ever the dissatisfaction of a doubt, when in reflection, whether the work done was to sat-
isfaction and whether there shall be an opportunity to have another try to redo and maybe improve the
previous ..
“There is ever the apprehension that the Production or the Director may not give you another chance .. but as you reminisce at night, it disturbs you and you wonder .. So a request has been made and there is promise that the opportunity to redo and improve shall be given .. but let us see .. The summer season in India has brought with itself a surge in travel, for which the train is the most preferred mode of transport for most people. While the scorching summer is pushing people out of their homes to cooler places for vacations, the Lok Sabha elections, being held across the country in seven phases, have further compounded the number of travelers across state borders as they exercise their right to vote.
While the Indian railways have been an integral part of nationbuilding and the lives of its citizens, they also have had a major influence on Hindi cinema serving as an important plot point in many stories on the celluloid.
Here are some Bollywood films where the trains played a pivotal role in the narrative.
‘Saathiya’, which was released in 2002, had the Mumbai local as an important catalyst to the love story between its lead pair. Vivek Oberoi, who made a sensational debut with ‘Company’ in the role of a gangster, underwent a 180-de-
gree shift for his role of a lover in the film, which was a Hindi adaptation of ‘Alai Payuthey’ directed by Mani Ratnam.
‘Jab We Met’ is a defining film in Kareena Kapoor Khan’s filmography, the one that established her as a leading female force in Hindi cinema. The story of ‘Jab We Met’ can’t be separated from the train on which she finds Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor) without a purpose, only to later change his life for good.
Who could forget the fascination of Geet (Kareena) for the side berth? The two miss out on the train twice and embark on a journey where they get to know more about each other.
‘Baton Baton Mein’, directed by Basu Chatterjee tells the story of an honest and hard-working middle class as they make their way around the Bombay of the 1970s.
The director set a major part of the film in the 9:10 local that his protagonists commuted in.
As legendary ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is, it has also given the famed scene to Hindi cinema where Raj is aboard the train, calling Simran for one last time as her father tightly holds her hand. It was at that moment when Chaudhary Baldev Singh (played by Amrish Puri) underwent a change of heart.
As he understands Raj’s eternal love for Simran, he lets her go with the dialogue, “Jaa Simran jaa, jee le apni zindagi.”
The list would be incomplete without the mention of ‘The Burning Train’. The multi-star film tells the story of passengers aboard a special train Super Express which suffers sabotage. The film has quite a few elements like the James Cameron di-
rectorial ‘Titanic’ mainly in terms of the luxury and the novelty that both the modes of transport promised and a tragedy that leaves the passengers scrambling inside a limited physical space. The film was one of the most expensive films of its time given its production value.
The song ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ deserves a special mention in this list. Although the plot of ‘Dil Se..’ has no relevance to the trains, it’s the song that has over the years gained a cult status and why not? Afterall, it features some of the finest talents in our cinema including Shah Rukh Khan, Malaika Arora, Mani Ratnam, Sukhwinder, A. R. Rahman, Gulzar, Farah Khan, and Santosh Sivan.
The iconic song was shot on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway Line. The narrow-gauge railway and the geography of Ooty posed a serious logistical challenge to the crew but, eventually they came out shining at the other end given how the song and its visuals have aged in 26 years since its release.
