Droupadi Murmu (née Tudu, born 20 June 1958) is an Indian politician who is the president-elect of India. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She

is the first person belonging to the indigenous, scheduled tribe community to be elected President of India. Prior to her presidency she served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand between 2015 and 2021, and held various portfolios in the cabinet of Government of Odisha

Draupadi Murmu Becomes 15th President Of India

NDA nominee Murmu crossed the 50 percent mark after the third round of counting to emerge victorious in the poll over her rival Sinha.

The NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu emerged victorious in the presidential election by bagging a total of 6,76,803 votes over her rival Yashwant Sinha who polled 3,80,177 votes.

In a statement, Sinha also expressed concern over the country’s situation, saying India has never seen “political corruption of such magnitude”, and this, coupled with the “poisonous politics of polarisation”, poses a grave danger to democracy and communal harmony.

Making an official announcement after the fourth round of counting, Returning Officer P C Mody declared Murmu as the winner with 64.03 percent votes. Sinha got 36 percent of the valid votes polled.

Murmu bagged votes from a total of 2824 electors, including 540 MPs, while her rival Sinha got votes of 1,877 electors including 208 MPs in the election.

There were a total of 4809 electors, including 776 MP with total vote value of 10,72,377, but votes of 53 electors including the maximum of 15 MPs were declared invalid in the election held on July 18.

A sizeable number of MLAs from across state assemblies crossvoted in support of President elect Draupadi Murmu, defying their parties’ stated support to Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, sources said

BJP sources said around 125 MLAs from different assemblies crossvoted in her support.

Counting of votes also suggests that Murmu was the beneficiary of crossvoting from 17 MPs. Assam, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh assemblies witnessed a significant

number of Opposition MLAs voting for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s candidate.

Civilians Can Soon Fly To Space? ISRO Eyeing ‘Space Tourism’ With Gaganyaan Mission Just Like SpaceX

ISRO is currently working on several other missions as it looks to conduct its first human spaceflight launch with the Gaganyaan mission.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was in the process of developing indigenous capabilities towards space tourism through the demonstration of human space flight capability to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (INSPACe) also sought to promote active participation of the private sector in carrying out end-to-end space activities, which also includes space tourism.

To a question on space diplomacy, the minister said ISRO pursued

international cooperation and relations with 61 countries in varied domains of space activities.

Fasting as a potential treatment The study assessed nerve regeneration of mice where the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve running from the spine down the leg, was crushed. Half of the mice underwent intermittent fasting (by eating as much as they liked followed by not eating at all on alternate days), while the other half were free to eat with no restrictions at all.

They observed how fasting led to the gut bacteria increasing production of a metabolite known as 3-Indolepropionic acid (IPA), which is required for regenerating nerve fibers called axons—thread-like structures at the ends of nerve cells that send out electro-chemical signals to other cells in the body.

Investigation reveals metabolism link The researchers also studied how fasting led to this nerve regeneration. They found that there were significantly higher levels of specific metabolites, including IPA, in the blood of diet-restricted mice.

To confirm whether IPA led to nerve repair, the mice were treated with antibiotics to clean their guts of any bacteria. They were then given genetically-modified strains of Clostridium sporogenesis that could or could not produce IPA. “When IPA cannot be produced by these bacteria and it was almost absent in the serum, regeneration was impaired. This suggests that the IPA generated by these bacteria has an ability to heal and regenerate damaged nerves,” Professor Di

Giovanni said. Importantly, when IPA was administered to the mice orally after a sciatic nerve injury, regeneration and increased recovery was observed between two and three weeks after injury.

The next stage for this research will be to test this mechanism for spinal cord injuries in mice as well as testing whether administering IPA more frequently would maximize its efficacy. “One of our goals now is to systematically investigate the role of bacteria metabolite therapy.” Professor Di Giovanni said.

More studies will need to investigate whether IPA increases after fasting in humans and the efficacy of IPA and intermittent fasting as a potential treatment in people. “I watched my mother serve as the main caregiver for my father with COPD,” said Africk, president of Respiratory Health Association (RHA). “The follow-up appointments, the coordination of his care with his care team, the supervised exercise – my mother juggled it all.

She was the driving force in my dad’s care.”

Luckily, because of the work he does, Africk said, “I was able to put our kitchen table conversations in front of a dedicated team of patients, caregivers and providers, and ‘The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit’ was created. We worked to simplify some of the most complicated parts of being a COPD caregiver and provide resources to help.”

According to Jim Kiley, M.D., director of NHLBI’s Division of Lung Diseases, “COPD is a complex disease that over time can become debilitating. That’s why early diagnosis, treatment and disease management are so important.

It can be overwhelming for many patients and their families.”

Patan Durbar Square

Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of the city of Lalitpur in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attractions is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.

The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newar architecture. The square floor is tiled with red bricks. There are many temples and statues in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square built by the Newa People. A center of both Hinduism and Buddhism, Patan Durbar Square has 136 “bahals” (courtyards) and 55 major temples.

The square was heavily damaged by the earthquake in April 2015.

The history of Durbar Square is not

clear. Although the Malla Kings of Lalitpur are credited with the establishment of the royal square, it is known that the site is an ancient crossroad. The Pradhanas, who settled around the site before the

Mallas, have connections with the Durbar Square. Some chronicles hint that the Thakuri dynasty built a palace and made reforms to the locality, but there is little evidence of this. Scholars are certain that Patan was a prosperous city since ancient times.

The Malla Kings made important changes to the square. Most of the current architecture is from the

1600s, constructed during the reign of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla and his son Srinivasa Sukriti. Some of the notable Malla Kings who improved the square include Purandarasimha, Sivasimha Malla and Yo g a narendra Malla.

Patan is one of the oldest Buddhist cities. It is a center of both Hinduism and Buddhism with 136 bahals or courtyards and 55 major temples. Most of these structures are in the vicinity of the Durbar Square.

Krishna Mandir Krishna temple is the most important temple in Patan Durbar Square. A three-storied structure, it was built in the local variety of Shikhara style called Granthakuta.

The stone carvings along the beam above the first and second-floor pillar are most notable. The first-floor pillar carvings narrate the events of the Mahabharata, while on the second floor there are visual carvings from Ramayana.

The temple was built in 1667 by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla. It is said that one night the King saw Lord Krishna and his consort Srimati Radha standing in front of the royal palace. He ordered a temple to be built on the same spot. There are 21 golden pinnacles in the temple. Below the pinnacles are three stories. The first floor holds the main shrine of Lord Krishna with shrines of Radha and Rukmini at each side. The second floor is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the third to Lokeshwor (Avalokiteshvara).

The square is crowded with thousands of Hindu Pilgrims and devotees during Krishnastami.

Bhimsen Temple Bhimsen Temple was built by Srinivasa Malla in 1680. It is renowned for its three interconnected golden windows. Bhimsen is a

great personality in Mahabharata.

He was known to be brave and strong. In Newa, he is traditionally worshiped as a god of business and trade.Tourists are not allowed inside the temple.

Vishwanath Temple Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to God Shiva. It was built in 1627 during the reign of Siddhi Narsingh Malla. The roof supports are decorated with erotic carvings similar to imagery widespread in Shiva temples in India. The temple is guarded by two stone elephants in the front entrance. On the other side of the temple is the sculpture of a bull, Shiva’s vehicle. A stone linga is enshrined inside the temple.

“When I received the e-mail about my selection, I could not believe it for a moment,” he said. “This award definitely shows the importance of energy efficiency improvement and reducing emissions.”

As the former lead propulsion system engineer for General Motors’ IMPACT electric vehicle, Raja may be better known as the man who helped advance the technologies that led to the first commercially produced electric vehicle, the GM EV1 in 1995.

He calls himself a “futurist” because he is always working on futuristic projects. After ushering in the era of electric and hybrid cars from 1989-2006 by advancing the technologies including the EV1, he left his position at GM/Delphi for his next revolutionary project.

At Rolls Royce, he worked on advanced architectures for more electric and hybrid electric aircrafts bringing to life his notions of converting ancillary equipment used on aircrafts (like air conditioning and cooking devices) to electricity, leading to next generation aircrafts beyond the 787 Dreamliner-types.

With those futuristic projects in the past, he says the next big thing will be flying cars – and he’s all in. If his track record is proof, it may be time to look skyward for a parking spot. “Professor Rajashekara does not see limits, only possibilities. Electric vehicles are changing the way the world moves, and he has played a vital role in the exploration and improvement of this innovation,” said Renu Khator, University of Houston president. “I congratulate him for this well-earned global distinction and for his role in positioning the University of Houston as the ‘Energy University.’”

The Prize

Rajashekara is the winner in the New Ways of Energy Applications category for outstanding contributions to transportation electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions. He is engaged in power plants for electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles; electric and hybrid electric aircraft systems; hybrid flying vehicles and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. He is the owner of 36 U.S. patents and 15 foreign patents.

The prize honors “outstanding scientific research and scientific-technical developments in the field of energy which promote greater efficiency and environmental security for energy sources on Earth in the interests of all mankind.”

He is joined as a 2022 laureate by Viktor Orlov, chief specialist of the Centre for Innovative Technologies (Rosatom in Russia) and pioneer in thermonuclear physics; and Mercouri Kanatzidis, professor of chemistry and materials science at Northwestern University and senior researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory. He is one of the most highly cited chemists, with more than 1,450 published scientific papers.

The laureates were selected by the international committee of scientists from 11 countries: the United States, Italy, China, Hungary, India, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Korea.

The awarding ceremony will be held during Russian Energy Week in Moscow, October 12-14.

“I have been working on transportation electrification for a long time, starting with Rail Transportation in ABB, then electric and hybrid vehicles in General Motors and Delphi, and then for Aircraft electrification in Rolls-Royce. At the University of Houston, I was able to continue to work in this area and advance the technologies for reducing emissions,” Rajashekara said. Even with that pedigree though, Raja was shocked when news of the award came.

Reducing Food Insecurity In Infants And Toddlers Food insecurity isn’t a new problem in the United States, but the economic upheaval created by the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the problem.

During the pandemic, households in the United States with children experienced an increase in food insecurity, despite overall rates of food insecurity staying the same.

In 2019, 13.6% of households with children were food insecure, but by 2020, that number increased to 14.8%, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In general, child food insecurity rates are higher than overall food insecurity rates, according to the annual Map the Meal Gap study conducted by Feeding America, a nationwide nonprofit network of food banks. According to data from the Children’s Defense Fund,

this is particularly prevalent among low-income families, single mother households and Black and Hispanic households.

What Food Insecurity Means for Children Food insecurity and hunger are closely related but not quite the same. People who are food insecure don’t have reliable, ongoing access to an adequate supply of affordable, nutritious food. Hunger is a physical condition; food insecurity reflects barriers to obtaining food such as finances, physical location and transportation.

Infants and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies because their nutrient needs are high, especially in relation to the size of their stomachs and appetites. Caregivers in food-insecure

households may have little choice but to settle for cheaper, energydense but nutrient-poor foods. As a result, food-insecure infants and toddlers are not receiving adequate nutrition even when they may be receiving enough calories to satisfy hunger.

Even if a child isn’t physically starving, inadequate nutrition can negatively affect health in numerous ways, including immune system function, low weight, learning and developmental delays, vitamin deficiencies and more.

Ways to Help Promote Better Nutrition Support good nutrition during infancy and toddlerhood for your own children and others in the community with these practical tips:

• Participate in (or introduce those in need to) aid programs. Government nutrition assistance programs help provide essential nutrition needs during infant and toddler years.

One example is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides a variety of resources including food and health care referrals to support mothers and young children at nutritional risk, including pregnant, breastfeeding and post-partum women, as well as infants and children up to age 5.

Another example is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides benefits low-income families can use to purchase nutritious foods.

For children and adults who are en-

rolled in certain care programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps ensure they have access to nutritious meals and snacks.

• Make purchases that work extra hard. In addition to producing foods that encourage better nutrition for children, some brands also make contributions that help offset food insecurity. When you’re organizing your endof-life affairs, preparing a will is likely high on your list of priorities. What you may not realize is that there are different kinds of wills.

A last will and testament is probably what you think of first; it’s a legal directive about how your as-

sets should be handled upon your death. An ethical will, on the other hand, isn’t a legal document at all. It’s a way for you to convey thoughts, life lessons learned, the intentions behind your will and wishes for your loved ones.

Amazing Journey Rajashekara’s history of becoming a giant in his field is even more impressive than his innumerable accolades. As a little boy growing up in a village in India with his parents and two brothers, he lived in a one room lean-to that he said was smaller than the office he now occupies at UH. He read by kerosene lamplight and though neither of his parents were educated, his mother was determined that her children would do better and be the

best at whatever they pursued.

High school came to his village in time for him to attend. He cobbled together scraps of paper, gluing them to do his homework.

His biggest challenge was money. In today’s dollars, the salary his father made per month would equal about $1.75. But his circumstance held neither he nor his siblings back.

One, like him, is an engineer and the other is a doctor. An innate and unrelenting will to achieve was borne in the Rajashekara family.

Coming from such humble beginnings, Rajashekara says he is proud of his role in convincing a skeptical society that electric cars could become reality.

But he says he’s proudest of his ability to help students, colleagues and friends succeed. “To help them succeed in their lives and professions is what I want to see,” he said.

Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director, Criticare Asia Hospital, said, “His condition worsened on Monday morning and we had to put him on a ventilator. He got a cardiac arrest and died at 7.45 pm.’’

Southern Films Sweep 68th National Film Awards; Suriya, Ajay Devgn Share Best Actor Title Chennai, July 22 : Director Sudha Kongara’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which was partly inspired by events from the life of Captain G.R. Gopinath, founder of India’s first budget airline, swept five National Awards, including those for Best Feature Film, Best Actor and Best Actress at the 68th National Film Awards.

The awards were announced in New Delhi on Friday.

Malayalam actress and playback singer Aparna Balamurali, who played the female lead in the film, was named Best Actress, and Suriya, who played the male lead, share the Best Actor honour with Ajay Devgn for Om Raut’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’.

The film also won awards for Best Action Direction and Best Female Playback Singer.

Rajasekhar, Mafia Sasi and Supreme Sundar, who did the stunt direction for the film, will collect the action award.

The Best Female Playback Singer award went to Nanchamma.

‘Tanhaji’ also took home the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
