LET’S TALK ICE SAFETY The arrival of winter brings your favourite holiday activities and seasonal sports. Whether it's a laid-back ice skating session with loved ones or some friendly hockey games, make sure to keep safety a top priority. Water safety doesn't end just because the lakes has frozen over.

BEFORE YOU GO: Teach children to call for help loud and clear if they are in trouble. Kids: check with a responsible adult before heading onto, or near, the ice. Check that the ice is smooth and at least 10 cm (4 in) thick. Check with local authorities for more information on ice thickness.* Understand that ice is often unpredictable. In spring weather, thick is is not necessarily safe. During spring melt, impurities in the ice melt quickly, creating weak spots. Ice seldom freezes or thaws at an equal rate. If in doubt, don't go out!

ON THE ICE: Obey all signs posted on, or near, ice. Ensure that children only play on, or near, ice while a responsible adult supervises. Use the buddy system - never walk on ice alone.

IF YOU HEAR A CRACK: Lay down and crawl on the ice. Crawl or roll back to land.

SELF RESCUE TIPS: Float on your stomach, facing the shore. Reach forward onto the ice - do not push down on it. Kick your legs to slowly push your torso onto the ice. Crawl away from the hole. Get medical help immediately. If you can't climb onto the ice, float in the water and call for help loud and clear.

Helping Others: Phone 9-1-1, then call out the self-rescue steps. Push or throw something (e.g. long stick, rope, floating aid) that the victim can use to get out of the water and float on.

*The ABRA posts the lake's ice thickness on AuburnBayRA.ca

Take steps to help protect your household pipes from freezing

Every winter some Calgarians experience frozen water pipes which can result in water outages. The City’s Frozen Pipes Prevention Program works proactively with homes considered at higher risk due to factors such as location, depth and configuration of water pipes and history of freezing. However, recently we have noticed an increase in frozen pipes in homes that are typically at a lower risk, where taking some of the steps below could have prevented household pipes from freezing.

1. Keep your thermostat at a minimum of 15°C, even if you’re away from home. 2.Eliminate any cold drafts in unheated areas where water supply lines are located. This can include basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages and under bathroom and kitchen cabinets.

Commemorative Days: December Another month filled with significant commemorative dates and events that celebrate various aspects of culture, history, and awareness. Here are are some upcoming commemorative dates to look out for in December. December 3 - International Day of Persons with Disabilities More than 6.2 million Canadians have a disability – and many have disabilities that are not visible. Persons with disabilities face discrimination, incur many additional expenses, and often encounter barriers to finding meaningful and well-paid work. We recognize those on this day and make it a point to work together to help make our country a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible place to call home. December 6 - National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it. It is also a time to take action. Achieving a Canada free from gender-based violence requires everyone living in this country to educate themselves and their families and communities on gender-based violence, centre the voices of survivors in our actions and speak up against harmful behaviours. Stay up to date with all commemorative dates and months through the Government of Canada website

LAKE ICE RINK BUILDING INFORMATION SESSION RECAP From the ABRA Maintenance Team

If you weren't able to attend our Lake Ice Rink Building Information Session, here are key highlights for your consideration: The Lake Ice Rink Building Information Session, run by Kirby, our Landscape and Amenities Weekend Foreman. This session served as a platform for the ABRA Maintenance team to share valuable tips and insights on constructing resilient and smoothly surfaced ice rinks with residents.

Building a smooth, even rink can be a tedious process but some minor alterations can make all the difference. From snow removal, to flooding and solutions, to common ice problems, we hope these quick tips will allow for a smoother ice rink building process this winter.

Snow Removal Tips Shovelling Stretch beforehand to warm up your muscles and take it slow. Drink water and stay hydrated. Shovel frequently during a snow event. Fresh snow is lighter and there is less to move. Push instead of lifting when practical. Keep elbows close to body and knees bent. Lift only what you can comfortably manage. Lift with your legs, keep your back straight. Dress warmly in layers, avoid cotton.

Snowblower Only use gas snowblowers outside. Inspect unit before use. Clear objects (extension cords, pucks etc) off the rink and surface to be cleared before it snows. If the augers get jammed, turn it OFF and use a small shovel or tool to clear the jam. Check shear pins. Keep hands away form all moving parts. Take breaks when needed, be aware of vibration and fatigue. Wear protective, durable gear to keep your hands from getting cold.

LAKE ICE RINK BUILDING INFORMATION SESSION RECAP From the ABRA Maintenance Team

How to Flood your Rink

Temperature Tip

Flooding provides a uniformly smooth skating surface without overwhelming the ice. However, flooding the entire area simultaneously can result in an uneven and bumpy surface. When ice isn't flooded in layers, the bottom and top may freeze, leaving the water in-between to form fragile shell ice. This type of ice is not durable and is prone to breaking open, allowing oxygen to enter. It's advisable to flood in thin layers and allow each layer to freeze before proceeding.

An optimal and stable temperature for effective freezing is typically around -10 degrees Celsius. This specific weather condition facilitates a swift freezing process for the ice, striking a balance that prevents the hose from freezing too quickly. It's essential to find this sweet spot, as it allows for efficient ice formation without compromising the functionality of the equipment.

Ice Problems & Solutions Ice surfaces should be assessed regularly for cracks. A good rule of thumb is to repair anything that is wide enough to catch a skate. Having small sections of low quality ice is okay. The colour of the ice is a great indicator of durability.

Fixing Cracks Add snow to a bucket of water to create slush. Fill cracks in the ice with the slush you created and level it out. A putty knife works great for leveling out but a toboggan sled is another great alternative to repair cracks.

Colour of Ice Matters There are three colours of ice. Each means different things when it comes to the ice’s strength: Blue ice is clear and strong and the safest ice of all The colour of ice deepens with increasing thickness because water is naturally turquoise blue. It forms when the temperature drops below minus 8 degrees Celsius. White Opaque ice or snow ice is only half as strong as blue ice - It is formed by wet snow freezing on the top of existing ice. It can be very dangerous if this ice has formed on top of ice that is not completely frozen. When this forms, it takes even longer for the lowerlevel ice to solidify. Dull grey is a sure sign of unsafe ice - This grey colour means the ice is unsafe and that water is present. This ice will NOT support much weight. Grey is very common in the spring and in faster moving water all

*Remember: Lower ice quality means more ice depth is required for safe recreation

winter long.

Ice is never 100% safe. Excerise caution always

Community News PET OF THE MONTH:

! i g i G t Mee This eight-year-old cutie is as sweet as can be! Named in honor of the singer Regina Spektor, Gigi is a petite, fluffy kitty who's very shy around strangers and not a fan of cold weather. She was born in Brazil, this should be the reason you'll never see her leaping into the snow. She prefers to stay cozy indoors. But when summer comes around, her excitement is noticeable. She just can't wait for the warm sun to shine.

Submitted by Evilyn

Gigi's go-to spot is her favorite cat tower, right by the window, there she spends hours snuggled up, daydreaming about kitty adventures and watching people passing by on the street. But here's her little secret – she treasures the simple things in life. Gigi would gladly trade any toy for a bottle cap or a hair tie. She's a cat who finds joy in life's modest things. Do you have an adorable pet? The Auburn Bay Community wants to meet them! Email a picture and a brief description to rrcoordinator@auburnbay.org to be featured in upcoming newsletters!

This event is for Auburn Bay Residents Only (one Auburn Bay household only per RSVP). RSVP’s and your Family Booking Fee* must be submitted through Eventbrite via AuburnBayRA.ca. Advance registration is required. No tickets will be available at the door. Please note that membership cards are MANDATORY to be presented upon checkin with your Eventbrite ticket. *Due to the large number of no-shows and last minute cancellations we encounter for our popular holiday events, thus effecting our overall allowance for guest numbers, a nominal flat rate family booking fee ($10.00 + GST + Eventbrite fee**) has again been incorporated to help alleviate this issue.
