Happy September, Auburn Bay! Welcome to the September edition of the Resident Relations eNewsletter! As summer quickly fades, we can begin to embrace the arrival of fall. This month, I'm excited to share updates, upcoming events, and important information to help you transition smoothly into the new season. Whether you're settling into back-to-school routines or looking forward to new opportunities, we have plenty to keep you connected and engaged. Here’s to a fantastic September!

Boathouse Hours Update: Our boathouse will remain open until water temperatures drop to 10 degrees, although please note our reduced boathouse hours: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. To streamline your experience, you can use our watercraft reservation system for boat rentals.

Save the Date: The 2024 Annual General Meeting is scheduled for October 3rd at 7:00 pm.

Gatehouse Notice: The Gatehouse is now closed for the season. It will reopen for our fireworks event but will remain closed afterward.

Kreative Kids and Seniors Social Drop-In: We're thrilled to announce the return of our Kreative Kids and Seniors Social DropIn! Check out the upcoming fall dates.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a day to reflect, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations about our shared history. Let's commit to listening to Indigenous voices, supporting their stories, and working towards reconciliation—not just today, but every day.

Boathouse Information Watercrafts Available: Paddleboards Crusader Paddleboards Pedalboats Rowboats Kayaks

We have updated our watercraft reservation system!

Scan the QR Code located at the boathouse. Don’t have a phone? Use the iPad available at the front of the boathouse to complete a reservation.

1. Once you scan the QR code, you will be redirected to the watercraft waitlist homepage. Ensure you read over our boat rental rules and regulations and check the box to continue.

2. Our watercraft availability allows you to see what boats have line-ups and which boats are currently available to reserve. Select your watercraft for the correct amount of people and review the time-limit for your boat selection.

3. Fill in the required information. If you have a temporary membership, you are able to enter your Auburn Bay address by clicking the box.

4. Finalize your booking by hitting submit. Your registration will be confirmed and you will receive a text message to the number you entered once your watercraft is ready.

Please note: if you do not claim your boat within the 10 minute timeframe your reservation will automatically be canceled.

REDUCED BOATHOUSE HOURS IN EFFECT As we transition into the fall season, the boathouse will be updating its hours. Hours of operation will be 10:00am6:00pm. Please note that the majority of our seasonal staff members have left for the year, so we are down to a limited number of boathouse attendants. We kindly request your patience and understanding as we operate with a reduced team.

Boat and Stand Up Paddle Board Rules ABRA watercraft can only be signed out by residents aged 16+ with a valid membership card Lifejackets are MANDATORY on all ABRA watercraft.

(ABRA highly recommends that you bring your own lifejacket as we cannot guarantee the availability of our lifejackets) Boats can be taken out for 90 minutes SUP's can be taken out for 45 minutes Requests to sign out ABRA watercraft can only be made for the current timeslot. Requests for later time slots will not be granted Requests are subject to availability and are not guaranteed Failure to comply with ABRA rules & regulations may result in suspension of watercraft rental privileges.

Community Update: Lake Levels We at the Auburn Bay Residents Association (ABRA) share our community’s concerns about the current lake level. Rest assured, we’ve been actively advocating on behalf of Auburn Bay to address this issue.

Before the water restrictions came into effect, we sought to try and gain permission from the City to fill our lake. Unfortunately, our requests were denied. We’ve also been in close communication with Councillor Evan Spencer’s office, and there is hope that once the restrictions are lifted, we’ll be able to top up the lake.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to maintain our beautiful lake for everyone to enjoy.

General Rules

Bicycles, liquor, and glass bottles are not permitted in the park.

Scooters, rollerblades, roller-skates, skateboards are not permitted in the park.

Use of boogie boards or other such types of equipment will only be allowed when nobody is on the beach or in the swimming area.

All Flotation/Splash Island toys are not to exceed four (4) meters in diameter.

Pets are not permitted in the park, in the lake or on any ABRA managed property and pets are not allowed on the ice in the winter. Lake Shore/Lake Access homes must also comply.

Open fires are not permitted in the park. Only charcoal briquettes are to be used in the barbeques.

Smoking and/or e-cigarette usage is not permitted in any of the building facilities, park, pathways, and lake access ways.

Members must refrain from using foul language in the park and rambunctious and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.

The use of motorized boats (including battery operated motors) or other vehicles is prohibited (except as required by the Association for maintenance or security purposes).

Motorized remote control driven boats, planes, vehicles, and such are not permitted on ABRA property.

Jumping or diving from any dock owned by the ABRA or from any boat is strictly prohibited.

No person is permitted on the lake while Thin Ice signs are posted.

No person shall at any time discharge, deposit, throw, dump, or place any trash or debris of any kind whatsoever (including, without limitation, any toxic or dangerous substance or material) in the lake, all of which are strictly prohibited at all times.

The Auburn Bay Residents Association does not provide supervision or lifeguards for park/lake. Guardians are responsible for their children at all times. Members and guests will enter and use the park facilities at their own risk.

Need your Membership?

Homeowners: Bring a copy of your Certificate of Title, as well as government-issued photo I.D. with the Auburn Bay address on it to Auburn House to receive your permanent membership card.

Tenants: Ensure your landlord has completed a Transfer of Privileges form & sent in their Certificate of Title. Bring in your tenancy agreement & photo ID with the Auburn Bay Address. Headshots & documents can be emailed into csr@auburnbay.org or taken/provided at the office. Our office is open from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily.

Youth Membership Cards (12+) Did you know that youth 12 years and older are eligible for a membership card?

How to obtain a youth membership card: Parents/Guardians must provide a birth certificate and must fill out a Children’s Waiver Form in order for any children, aged 12 to 15, to receive their membership card. Photos can be taken at our main office or sent via email to csr@auburnbay.org Children’s Waivers must be filled out to receive a youth card. The form is available through the link below.

Children under 12 will not receive cards and may only utilize the facilities when accompanied by an adult.

Youth without a membership card are not permitted in the facility alone.

Membership Rules GENERAL MEMBERSHIP RULES All ABRA membership card holders MUST be respectful of ABRA property and staff.

All members must present their membership card to gain entrance to the park and facility.

All ABRA households, in good standing, are permitted to have five (5) guests per day.

Property owners are 100% responsible for their guests while using ABRA amenities.

Residents must reside with their guests when using ABRA amenities.

Members are not permitted to sign in other Auburn Bay residents – no exceptions.

All ABRA amenities and facilities are “Use at Your Own Risk”.

Members must adhere to ABRA rules and regulations while using ABRA amenities and facilities.

Membership cards remain the property of the Auburn Bay Residents Association.

ABRA will seize and suspend access if the holder of the card breaches the rules.

All members accessing the Auburn Bay amenities must always carry their membership card and present it upon request of the Auburn Bay Residents Association staff.

Membership cards are not transferable, including between members of the same household.

Lending your membership card to another person is prohibited and will result in a temporary suspension of membership privileges as determined by ABRA. If a membership card is lost or stolen, residents will be charged a $10 replacement fee.

Short term rentals and Air B&B’s are not permitted to obtain ABRA membership.

Private lakeshore and lake access docks are private property and not to be accessed by anyone other than the residents who reside in these areas.

Please allow up to 72 hours for all membership cards requests to be completed.

Our mission is to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles for all members of our community. Our equipment library is entirely free because we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to play. Feel free to donate any gently used sports equipment and take what you need!

7 Tips to Help Ease Kids’ Back to School Jitters Easing back to school jitters for kids can be challenging, but with some thoughtful preparation, you can make the transition smoother.

Start School Routines at Least a Week Before School Starts Start adjusting bedtime and morning routines a week or two before school begins. This helps children get used to the school schedule, making the first days less overwhelming.

Attend School Open House Together Many schools host open houses in the weeks leading up to the start of school. Does your school have one? Find out if they do and plan to attend.

Familiarity with the environment, classrooms, and playground can reduce anxiety.

Help Your Child Focus On the Positive!

Reminding your child about the positives—like reuniting with old friends, making new ones, or wearing a favorite outfit—can help ease their worries about returning to school. Focusing on these exciting aspects can make the transition feel more positive.

Involve Them in Decisions When Possible Will your child be taking the bus, walking, or getting a ride during the first few weeks of school? What do they prefer—hot lunch or cold? Let them make decisions, like choosing their school supplies or picking out their first-day outfit. Involving them in these choices can build excitement and give them a sense of control.

Read Books or Watch a Show With a Focus on School Reading books or watching shows about school can help your child relate to characters who share similar feelings about starting a new year. Seeing others face and overcome common school challenges can reassure your child that their emotions are normal and manageable.

Encourage Open Communication Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous and encourage them to talk about their feelings.

Reassure them that other kids may feel the same way.

Model Positive Coping Skills

by Managing Your Own Stress Children look to their parents for cues, so manage your own emotions about back to school. If you’re calm and positive, it can help your child feel more confident. Reinforce the positive by letting your child know how proud you are of them and their good choices as they return to school.

RENT A PICNIC SHELTER! Did you know you can rent one of our six picnic shelters in our park? Whether it's for an upcoming birthday party or just a family beach day, Auburn House offers rentals for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 3 hours.

Planning to book? Head down to Auburn House to secure your rental. Please note that picnic shelter rentals must be booked in-person at the main office.

Requirements to book: Homeowners or Tenants Insurance must be provided at time of booking. (Policy Number, Expiration Date and name of insurer) Valid Membership Card The picnic shelter may be rented for private functions only, at a rate of $25.00 per hour.

With a shelter booking, members receive a 25 person guest list.

TENNIS/PICKLEBALL COURT RESERVATIONS Outdoor Court reservations are now open, however please be aware of the following: We have implemented a new reservation system this season. In order to use this system you will need to create an account through the “Create my account” button located on the page linked below.

This new system will allow individual Pickleball courts to be booked (currently only available on the North Courts).

Please take note of the map and which court you are booking. There are currently no signs out at the courts to designate pickleball courts, however they will be installed soon!

Please be aware that the Auburn Bay Residents Association has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination towards ABRA staff, contractors and other patrons due to their race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, gender identity, gender expression, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin marital status, source of income, family stats, or sexual orientation of that person or that class of person.

Individuals who partake in discriminatory behaviour are subject to disciplinary action as per the recommendation of the ABRA Board of Directors Disciplinary Committee.

Safety Rangers is a free educational program offered by ABRA, aimed at providing valuable knowledge about practicing safety. Safety Ranger participants explore a variety of different safety topics through digital workbooks designed for their specific age group.

GYM SCHEDULE & INFO Please be aware of the rules for our gymnasium: Indoor Courts do not have a reservation system.

All courts are on a "first come first serve" basis.

However, all players must abide by the rotation system and take turns alternating game play when there are more groups than courts.

Once a match is complete, the next available players will head to a court to start their game. *Please be courteous, fair, and respectful of all users. Auburn House staff do not delegate game times and/or rotations.

ABRA DOES NOT PROVIDE GYM SUPERVISION

Drop-in Fees for Guests Adult guest drop-in fee: $10 Youth guest drop-in fee: $5

OPEN GYM & SPLIT GYM Open Gym (Non-Netted): Basketball, floor hockey, dodgeball... open gym is an all-ages opportunity for family and youth to use the gym for sports!

Split Gym (Half Netted, Half Non-Netted): Half the gym accommodates non-netted sports and half accommodates pickleball or badminton.

DROP-IN PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE, NO EXCEPTIONS.

ADULT DROP-IN REMINDER: Please note that our Adult drop-in times are 16+ only. No children are permitted in the gymnasium during these times. Children under the age of 12 are NOT to be left unattended in the facility.

GYMNASIUM RULES AND REMINDERS All users must check-in at the office before entering the gymnasium.

Adult members are permitted to bring up to 5 guests (per household) Residents MUST remain with their guests while using ABRA amenities.

Guests are not permitted into the facility until their resident is present.

Youth members (12-16 years, with written parental consent) up to 2 guests (per household) Indoor shoes are mandatory for all users.

The gymnasium is not a makeshift locker room. All users must use the designated changerooms in the bathrooms.

No outdoor hockey sticks or pucks permitted.

No food or drink (except water).

Gymnasium Schedule is subject to change at any time without notice.

Please respect the designated dropin times.

Please DO NOT put tape on the gymnasium floor to make your own court lines.

ABRA will be monitoring this going forward.

As a community, we come together on this day to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples, remembering the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never returned home.

This day is a call for us all to reflect, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations about our shared history. As a community, let’s be committed to listening to Indigenous voices, supporting their stories, and working towards reconciliation—not just today, but every day.

Educate Yourself: Learn about the history and ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, and Indigenous rights. Reading books, watching documentaries, and attending lectures can deepen your understanding.

Support Indigenous Businesses and Artists: Purchase goods from Indigenous-owned businesses and support Indigenous artists, musicians, and authors.

Attend Community Events: Participate in local events, such as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation gatherings, workshops, and cultural celebrations hosted by Indigenous communities.

Advocate for Change: Support policies and initiatives that promote Indigenous rights, land acknowledgments, and cultural preservation. Write to your local representatives or join advocacy groups.

Engage in Conversations: Discuss truth and reconciliation with friends, family, and coworkers to spread awareness and foster a broader understanding of these important issues.

Reflect and Acknowledge: Take time to reflect on your role in reconciliation, acknowledging the past, and considering how you can contribute to a better future.

UPCOMING EVENTS End of Summer Fireworks Spectacular Saturday, September 7, 2024

Fun starts @ 6:30pm | Fireworks @ approx. 9pm (after sunset)

Auburn Bay Residents ONLY

Experience the magic of summer’s twilight at the End of Summer Fireworks Spectacular, set against the backdrop of the serene waters of Auburn Bay Lake. Before the main event, enjoy bouncy houses and roving entertainment while indulging in treats from the Calgary Mini Donut food truck and Red Mountain Kettle Korn. As night falls, sip on a warm cup of VHF Coffee while watching in awe as the sky ignites with a dazzling display of fireworks. Whether on the shore or under the stars, it’s the perfect finale to a season of shared memories and moments.

Please Note: The use of propane fueled, or otherwise, portable fire pits are not permitted for use in the park. *THIS EVENT IS FOR AUBURN BAY RESIDENTS ONLY* Membership cards are MANDATORY for access and are required from everyone. NO CARD, NO ACCESS. Live alone?

New for 2024! Experience the fireworks like never before as a spectacularly unique pyromusical! This year, you’ll be able to sync the stunning display with perfectly timed music directly through your phone via a pyrocast app. To download the Pyrocast app, scan the QR Code below. Then, enter code "JH99" into the app to hear the music for the fireworks on your mobile device. Make sure to bring along a Bluetooth speaker or head phones!

SPECIAL EVENT FAMILY MUSTER POINT: We will be implementing the ‘Special Event Family Muster Point’ for our End of Summer Fireworks event. We highly recommend to all residents, particularly those with children, to familiarize yourselves with the location and the details of the Family Muster Point. See more information below.

Event Advisory For safety reasons, the lake will be closed prior to and during this event. There will be NO boats, SUP’s, nor watercraft or inflatables of any type permitted on the lake. We also ask that everyone stays out of the water during this time. This includes those who have lake access or lake shore properties.

The boathouse will close for rentals at 7:00pm (or earlier, if needed) in preparation for our event.

Please also keep all dogs and pets safely indoors (preferably with human companionship) for the duration of the fireworks show. While fireworks are awesome for humans, they are frightening and overwhelming for pets.

This enchanting event showcases the incredible talents of local artisans, crafters, and home-based business entrepreneurs.

SPECIAL EVENT FAMILY MUSTER POINT Hey Auburn Bay! We would like to remind all of our residents and guests that safety is always our number one priority. This year again, we will be implementing a Special Event ‘Family Muster Point’ for all our of outdoor family events, which will be located in the splash park area.

We highly recommend to all residents, particularly those with children, to familiarize yourselves with the location of the Family Muster Point upon arrival to an event. Please speak with your children to ensure everyone knows, should you be separated from your group or family, to meet up at the Family Muster Point. We will have staff stationed there to quickly help reunite your group.

Should you have a member go missing from your group, it is a good idea to know what everyone is wearing for a description. It is of the utmost importance that all residents know where to go, and what to do in case of an emergency.
