it’s local FOLLOWING the huge success of the first ever Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk last Christmas, the fun returns on 4th December this year and Ashby Life are extremely proud to once again be sponsoring the event.

of all ages and entire families walking and running through the streets.

The Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk is by no means a traditional race with no race ace numbers or times recorded. More than anyy thing this is a Christmas family event which h brings together the whole town. The 3km route starts and finishes at the Bath Grounds and is flat and family friendly so suitable for everyone.

Last year’s numbers surpassed everyone’s expectations and over £6,000 was raised for charity, the majority of which went to local charity; Hospice Hope. This year’s run will again be raising much needed funds for Hospice Hope and a number of other local charities through the Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Ashby Castle who own and promote the Santa Fun Run aim to make this an annual event enabling the community to be part of the fun but also supporting local charities.

Last December 625 Santa’s congregated on the Bath Grounds for a warm up with Fitness Republic before setting off en masse around the 3km route. It was a sight to behold with Santa’s

8

Entry to the event is just £10 for adults (16 and over) and just £5 for under 16's. The entry fee includes your Santa suit, beard, hat and a medal upon completion of the fun run and walk. If you’d like to register then simply head over to the website www.ashbysantafunrun.com and complete a registration form. There has already been a lot of interest so make sure you don’t miss out by registering today. Why not enter the whole family? We’ll be there so see you on the big day!

ashby’s FABulous Ashby’s FABulous 2016 ‘This one’s for you Lorna’...

A great success for Ashby and for Lorna too!

THE magic of live windows returned to Ashby for the third year running on Saturday, 1st October, with Ashby’s FABulous 2016 ‘this one’s for you Lorna’.

This was a town wide event to celebrate what Ashby has to offer and the community work of Lorna Titley who was so passionate about Ashby Town. The Ashby’s FABulous event was first held in the town in 2014 and was organised by Lorna Titley. Lorna was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in January this year.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Ashby and despite the weather in the afternoon, Ashby town centre was full and very lively!

This year’s event was bigger than ever with 43 live windows, 15 magic themes and 86 models involved. So many different businesses in Ashby were involved including butchers, fashion retailers, bridal shops, hairdressers, beauty salons, pet shops and parlours, florists, opticians, charity shops, cafes and food retailers, DIY shops, local Yoga

16

classes, travel agents, home interiors, gift shops, furniture outlets, fabrics and sewing, a bed shop, card shops, a chemist, a toyshop and a sweetshop. A number of models were provided by Ashby school and the rest were enthusiastic volunteers including Lorna’s daughter and grandson, Leonie and Arthur (pictured top) who were the live models in Shellbrook Toys window.

“Lorna was very passionate about the Ashby Film Nights that take place at The Lyric Rooms, so we thought we would run a movie theme fancy dress to tie in with this - enabling businesses unable to have a live window to also be involved and add a little more magic to the day.” said Julie Brownlow of Ashby Image & Print. Movie characters seen on the day included James Bond, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Wizard of Oz, Grease, ‘Allo ‘Allo, Minions, Alice in Wonderland and A Hundred and One Dalmatians. Once again, Ashby’s hair and beauty salons

gave their time and expertise, free of charge, to promote models

styling. These included; Classic Cuts of Ashby, Keith Hall, The Temple Hair Spa, Trendset and Vanilla Funk, The Beauty Rooms, Rose Beauty Services and Uruku Beauty salon.

Fashion retailers and charity shops provided, outfits, florists supplied bouquets and vintage shops tea sets and accessorises for the models who posed from 10:30am to 12noon and 1:30pm till 3pm. “Lorna was so passionate about Ashby’s FABulous and its potential for promoting what Ashby has to offer, we felt that we needed to make sure Ashby’s FABulous happened this year. The whole town was alive with balloons, movie magic and live models.” said Clare Birch, one of the Ashby FABulous team.

money matters Editorial by Lisa Emery of Baldwins

LATE FILING PENALTIES Don’t get caught – file on time! SELF-ASSESSMENT season is just getting into full swing, which means that many small businesses and accountants are busy getting tax returns successfully filed on time.

But although HMRC says more than 10 million people filed their tax returns by the January 31st deadline this year, there are still hundreds of thousands who will fail to complete theirs on time. And if you are usually one of them make sure you do things differently this year and file it on time.

Here's how you can still get your tax return completed even after the deadline has passed, and suggests some steps you can take to avoid making the same mistake again in the future.

You can ACT NOW and avoid all of the penalty problems! See the following helpful chart:

Penalties for missing the tax return deadline LENGTH OF DELAY

LENGTH OF DELAY

1 day late

A penalty of £100. This applies even if you have no tax to pay or have paid the tax you owe.

3 months late

£10 for each following day - up to a 90 day maximum of £900. This is as well as the fixed penalty above.

6 months late

£300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is the higher. This is as well as the penalties above.

12 months late

£300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is the higher. In serious cases you may be asked to pay up to 100% of the tax due instead.

Have you got a reasonable excuse not to file on time?

There may be a very good reason why you haven’t filed your tax return on time in the past, such as a serious illness, or a death in your immediate family.

HMRC call this a 'reasonable excuse' for filing late, and you should tell them what has happened as soon as possible. Don’t wait until they send you a penalty notice. Fill in and submit a claim form to let them know.

Examples of other reasonable excuses would include computer breakdown as you try to file (of either your system or HMRC’s), your records being destroyed in a fire or flood so near to the deadline that you can’t recreate them, or receiving your online activation code late despite applying for it in plenty of time.

Relying on your accountant to fill in and submit your form for you, though, is not a reasonable excuse, as HMRC still hold you responsible for your own tax affairs even if you have engaged an accountant.

Also, taxpayers who persistently file and pay late are more likely to attract unwelcome attention from HMRC in the form of visits from inspectors, as HMRC may suspect your records are not up to scratch. If that turns out to be the case, they can also levy penalties for this, on top of the ones imposed for filing and paying your tax late.

18

These are as well as the penalties above.

PuT SySTEMS IN PLACE FOR NExT YEAR

Start to collect your tax return paperwork as soon as you can after 5th April 2017. Have a box file to keep documentation for each tax year, such as interest certificates from your bank, dividend vouchers showing money received on shares, and so forth. But for this year – come and see Baldwins NOW and lets get your tax filed ON TIME!

open 4 business

IncredibleKids

A VISIT to the brand new Incredible Kids Day Nursery recently opened on Ivanhoe Fields Business Park is time well spent for any local parent. The purpose built site has masses of both indoor and outdoor space with every facility imaginable including a parent room for Mums still breastfeeding or those leaving their little one for the first time but not wanting to venture too far. There’s hi-tech security on every door, plenty of parking for drop off and pick up and the location is perfect for parents commuting to work with easy access to the motorways.

Samantha Corbin, the owner of the new nursery, has a wealth of experience and knowledge from having six children of her own to running two successful nurseries already in Hilton and Pride

26

Park and this shows. Everything has been considered not only through the eyes of a nursery owner but as a parent.

There is an established team of local staff, who between them have over 90 years of experience in childcare, and an on-site chef to cook fresh meals for the children each day. The team work closely with parents and are developing links with local schools.

A tour of the nursery reveals large, airy rooms each kitted out accordingly for either babies, toddlers or pre-school kids and a sensory room is in development. As the site is designed specifically as a nursery the smallest detail has been considered such as the low level windowsills for the babies to peer out into the garden and the remote controlled blackout blinds to allow them to nap in the middle of the day.

The nursery offers any parent a tour and/or a free taster session so that you can see how the nursery works, the facilities on offer and most importantly meet the staff. Give them a call on 01530 415 566 to find out more or drop in for a chat. you’ll be amazed at what you find.

a walk in the forest

T Ticknall Tramway Tunnel and Limeyards

T This is a brilliant walk to take the kids on as it has a tunnel plus caves, rocky outcrops and p ponds to explore along the route. I would recommend taking torches - the tunnel is lit by s shafts and you can see the end but it can be slippery and is uneven underfoot. For those who 1 aaren’t surefooted but would still like to enjoy the walk there is an above ground option to avoid tthe ttunnell iitself. th t lf l All l ll around an hour for the walk. If you fancy refreshments afterwards The Wheel in Ticknall does Allow excellent meals (booking is advisable) and the village shop and tea rooms offer hot drinks, cake and light refreshments. The walk starts from Ticknall Village Hall car park which is 2 situated just off Ingleby Lane in Ticknall. The postcode for sat nav users is DE73 7JW.

Leave the car park by the gate in the corner which leads back out onto Ingleby Lane. C Cross over the lane and turn right to walk downhill towards the v village. After a short distance cross the main road, opposite The (1) W , and then turn left for a short distance before turning Wheel r right into Banton’s Lane by a wooden footpath sign. Continue t through the small gate at the end of the lane and follow the f footpath arrows to bear right across the field. You will pass tthrough an open gateway and then a new wooden gate (2). A econd small gate which Almost immediately after this gate turn right to pass through a second l you down a slope to the old tramway. Turn sharp right and you will see the entrance 3 leads tto the Ticknall Tramway Tunnel ahead of you (3). Built in 1805, the tunnel was part of tthe tramway linking the limeworks at Ticknall with the Ashby Canal and was closed in 1915. *Those who wish to avoid going through the tunnel itself s should turn left after the new gate, follow the path to reach and cross over the e main drive of Calk Calke Abbey, and then look for a stile on the far side of the drive which will lead them down to the other end of the tunnel. *

4

After emerging from the tunnel, you enter Ticknall Limeyards, a site of special scientific interest. This path always makes me think of Lord of the Rings as you can definitely imagine hobbits, elves and goblins living among the ferns, rocks and hanging creepers! Keep straight ahead down the track, following the green National Trust arrows, and ignoring any paths off to the side. You will pass over a small metal bridge (4) with an information board off to the left of it and a little further on you cross over a beautifully restored old stone bridge (5). Go through a wooden gate and then underneath a stone archway (6) before arriving at a narrow gap by a rocky outcrop with a stile on your left. ay like to o make a small Cross the stile to emerge onto a grassy area with ponds on your left hand side. You may diversion to explore the ponds before leaving over the stile on the far side of this area. After damp weather there is a small waterfall which cascades down the rocks on your right just after the stile - in the winter when it freezes i is particularly beautiful. it

6

A After a short way you join a wide track. Turn left and follow the track down to reach t main road through Ticknall. Turn left along the road, and the 5 c continue along the pavement, crossing over where the path on t left ends, until you pass under the bridge just before the the m main entrance to Calke Abbey. Immediately opposite this e entrance, take the path up the grassy area on your right up to a gap beside a gate which leads onto the end of Chapel Lane. T Turn left to go through the gate and then walk along Chapel L Lane to arrive back onto Ingleby Lane. The gate leading into T Ticknall Village Hall car park is now immediately ahead of you.

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

As you may be aware eyebrows with most things go through fashions. But whatever the current fashion it’s always in vogue to have your brows preened and looking tidy. But what is the perfect brows for your face shape? Here some simple tips to give your face an instant lift.

• Take a makeup brush to help guide you and place next to the side of the nose in line with the tear duct. This tells you where your brows should start.

• Now place from the side of the nose to the outer corner of the eye this will tell you where your brow should end. • A slight arch in the centre will lift the face and open up the eye area. The arch should be just above the iris (black dot in the centre of the eye).

Lashes

Lash enhancements are becoming more popular but what’s right for you?

Whether it’s strips lashes, cluster lashes or individual lashes there is something for everyone!

Strip lashes and cluster lashes are great for an evening out. Once applied they give an immediate effect enhancing the eyes and can be removed easily along with your makeup, before bed.

Individual semi-permanent lashes can dramatically enhance the look of the eyes. These are single lashes applied to a single natural lash. The natural lashes are thickened and lengthened. These can last up to a month and are maintained.

TOP TIP To make your own guacamole, mash the flesh of 1 large ripe avocado with the juice of half a lime, 2 chopped tomatoes and a handful of freshly chopped coriander. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

& Caramel Sauce

yOu WILL NEED

• 115g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 115g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 115g self-raising flour • 1tsp ground mixed spice • 1tbsp milk

GET STARTED

Makes 4. Ready in 1 hour 20 mins

• 55g ready-to-eat dates, chopped

• ½ tsp vanilla bean paste (see Tip)

FOR THE SAuCE

• 50g unsalted butter

• 75g brown sugar

• 75ml double cream

1 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Lightly grease 4x 175 to 200ml oven-proof ramekin dishes (or metal pudding basins) with the extra butter. Line the base of each with a circle of baking paper.

2 Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture begins to curdle. Sift over the rest of the flour and mixed spice and fold in until thoroughly combined. Fold in the dates, vanilla bean paste and milk.

3 Divide the mixture between the prepared dishes and cover each with a square of pleated baking paper then pleated foil and secure with fine kitchen string. Place the dishes in a deep roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for about 50 minutes until risen and firm to the touch. 4 To make the caramel sauce, gently heat the butter and sugar in a small pan, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Simmer for 1 to 2 minutes until syrupy then remove from the heat and stir in the cream to make a smooth sauce. Turn the puddings out onto warmed plates and spoon over the sauce.

TOP TIP Vanilla bean paste has a very intense flavour so use sparingly. If unavailable use 1tsp vanilla extract or for a change of flavour try 1 to 2 tsp coffee extract instead.

rocks arranged to emulate a stream in a landscape. Bridges are for the purpose of crossing water but symbolising too the linking of ‘this world’ with heaven. Ornaments such as stone lanterns similarly have dual purpose, the practical benefit of lighting a garden and creating a sculptural element.

THE Japanese garden designers do not use a master plan from which most of the garden detail is set out, like most western designed gardens. Instead they focus on each element, placed one at a time as the balance of the space is considered before the next ornament, stone or plant is arranged. Their technique is to put items in an asymmetrical way, rather than in the traditional symmetrical western arrangement.

Often miniature landscapes created as a garden will be enclosed with walls or hedges. Such walls can be seen as frames or a clean backdrop for other details within the garden. Tightly clipped evergreens against the stark surface of a wall or raked sand, focuses attention to the plant. Windswept pines represent perseverance and bamboos and grasses that bend with the wind show the power of resilience. It is the empty space, or voids, within Japanese garden that give visual space, allowing room for tranquillity and thought. Water is a key element in a Japanese garden and is often portrayed through the use of gravel or small

These eastern gardens are of course linked with religion and meditation. So for example the clearing of fallen leaves, or raking gravel in a wave pattern is a simple and slow process which despite its simplicity requires attentiveness. In Zen, the principal of cleansing the garden becomes a restful and meditative task. Hold this thought when you are raking and clearing up the last of the endless fallen autumn leaves in your garden! Happy gardening.

JOBS FOR NOVEMBER... 1 Leave some leaves for the hedgehogs and put food out for birds. 2 Plant Tulip bulbs. 3 Bare root season will start mid to late November for hedging, trees and roses. 4 In areas of heavy clay, dig and cover with some well rotted manure or other organic matter ready to fork over what is left in the spring months. 5 Prune currants and gooseberries.

ashbeian mtg news REHEARSALS began very loudly on Tuesday 4th October, when our wonderful Fagin’s Gang met the regular membership at the first rehearsal for Oliver!

Cor Blimey! What a night!

To say we need a much bigger rehearsal venue is probably the best understatement anyone has made recently! With 40 children, the existing Junior and Adult members, plus the new members who auditioned successfully on the same night too, the Hall was bursting at the seams! All that was missing was a line of dogs wanting to audition for the part of Bullseye! There is something really magical about a room full of children and adults who were all together for the first time – and who spent the best part of two hours singing through the songs from Act One of Oliver!, under the expert baton of Alan Hutchinson, our Musical Director, and his band of resident musicians. Anybody visiting our rehearsal hall for the first time could be forgiven for thinking that we have all spent months together – not just two hours – the whole team bonded immediately, and that first night was proof, if it were needed, that the AMTG family is doing what it does best – enjoying ourselves and working to bring another successful production to the 400 Hall, Repton, in a few months’ time. There is a lot of hard work yet to do – at the time of writing the Principal auditions have not yet taken place – but from 4th8th April 2017 we will be hoping to see you in the audience

48

when we invite you to “Consider Yourself One of Us”! To find out more about us please go to our new website at amtg.org.uk – the online Box Office opens on 1st November 2016, and we are certain that tickets will sell extremely quickly for Oliver!. We are always keen to hear from anybody who would like to help backstage with our productions, and although we have held our acting new members’ auditions for this year, there is still the opportunity to come and be a part of the team – email enquiries @amtg.org.uk if you would like to come along. And finally, we do need a Bullseye! If any canines out there would like to get in touch with us to audition, we’d be very, very pleased! It is a starring role and the successful Bullseye can look forward to making friends with 100 new people – and that’s just the cast and crew!

spotlight on... THE Maria Hanson Foundation (me&dee charity) is a local charity many of you may not have heard of yet. It offers families affected by life limiting illnesses a wonderful gift – a stay at the seaside for what may be their final family holiday together.

When it’s uncertain how long a family have left together making memories such as these is invaluable. The Found-ation arranges holidays at Mablethorpe in two caravans for a week’s much needed break – all at no cost to the family. Each family receives their own private beach hut for their stay along with grocery vouchers and every attempt is made to cover individual health needs from respirators to kidney dialysis to carers.

The holidays are offered to anyone of any age, with life threatening, life limiting and terminal medical conditions as well as serving and exserving military who have sustained serious injury and PTSD through their service. Just a few examples of the many families who have been helped can be found on the website www.mariahansonfoundation.org.uk and show the huge difference this makes at such a difficult time.

Maria Hanson (pictured left), the lady behind this wonderful charity, set up the charity in 2006. Her work has been recognised through her MBE and at the Pride of Britain awards. However the real reward is the help she offers to hundreds of people every year.

Each holiday costs the charity £200. Each year the Foundation requires £40,000 to continue its good work. To find out more about making a donation, offering support or volunteering then visit www.mariahansonfoundation. org.uk There are a number of ways to make a straight forward donation – by text, online or by setting up a monthly direct debit. Alternatively a donation of £200 covers the cost of one whole holiday and makes you a member of the exclusive 100 Club. Of course you could also look to organise a fundraising event or become involved in one locally. The next event in Ashby will be the LoveLBG Ladies Business Group Christmas Lunch at The Lyric Rooms. Tickets cost £29.50 and include a two course Christmas lunch and a number of festive stalls to get some Christmas shopping done. The event will be raising money for The Maria Hanson Foundation.

MONTHLY uPDATE WHEN yOu CALL… At the request of the GP Partners, upon booking an appointment, you will be asked to give an idea of the reason for making the appointment. This information will assist our trained Receptionists in booking your appointment with the most appropriate clinician and to allocate the correct amount of time. We appreciate that some patients may not wish to disclose what type of problem they have and it is perfectly acceptable to refuse to offer this information at the time. However, we would urge you to co-operate as far as you feel able to, as it is in your best interests that this information is requested. We would also add that this information is very helpful for all clinicians and also in preventing appointments being booked inappropriately. ONE PROBLEM – ONE 10 MINuTE APPOINTMENT POLICy… We appreciate that patients would like to make the most of their booked appointments for both their own convenience or feeling they don’t want to burden the doctor with multiple appointments, so often attend with a list of problems. Unfortunately, a 10 minute appointment is not sufficient to safely and effectively deal with

more than one problem. For your clinical safety and so that the doctor can best deal with your most significant problem we kindly ask that all patients stick to our ‘One Problem per Consultation’ policy. Please do not be offended if the doctor asks you to rebook for your other problems. We are working in your best interests in order to keep you safe. We would always encourage patients to book double appointments if there is more than one issue that needs to be discussed. If you have missed our two Saturday Flu clinics, don’t panic! If you are eligible, you can drop in to Castle Medical Group to have your flu vaccination on a ‘sit and wait’ basis during the following times on Monday to Friday: Morning 8:30-12:00, Afternoon 15:00-17:30.

STAFF CHANGES… We would like to welcome Hannah, Becky, Michelle and Jayne to the Reception and Admin Team as we continually strive to improve the call and queue waiting times in Reception. On the clinical team, we have several locums joining us on various days to help meet demand for GP appointments. In the nursing department, we have also appointed another new practice nurse, Lisa Hunt. Finally, Sarah Humphreys will be joining us towards the end of the month as a Nurse Practitioner.

st helen’s heritage project

St Helen’s Community Heritage Centre

Also discovered were the remains of a causeway, civil war trenches and the remains of a tithe barn. Smaller finds tell us of the activities taking place on the site, the kind of food eaten and the links the church has with Lilleshall Abbey.

All of this information will be documented and available for visitors to see in the summer of 2017. We are now working with an interpretation company to better interpret the artefacts and monuments we have and to show our archaeological finds going back to the Stone Age.

St Helen’s Heritage Project has got off to an excellent start.

The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of £604.800 to St Helen’s Church to help fund a threeyear programme of heritage activities and to create a Heritage Centre alongside the existing St Helen’s Cottage. The new build already has a roof and we can now see definitions of rooms appearing. For a project that first began some six years ago, this is a welcome sight.

The programme aims to show the heritage not only of the historic church building, but also of the site and how it links in with the Castle, the original Boys Grammar School and the wider town of Ashby-dela-Zouch.

With a tower built by Lord Hastings in 1474, the building stands on what is thought to have been an existing church that was alluded to in the Domesday Book. The church was extended in the 1800s to provide for the growing number of worshippers and this has given us the shape we have today. The bell tower is furnished with 10 bells.

An archaeological dig, undertaken before the Heritage Centre could commence, has revealed that it will stand on what was the site of a medieval vicarage.

76

We are presently training tour guides and welcomers and creating activities for adults and children to take part in. We are looking forward to groups booking guided tours, uniformed and other younger people’s groups and school parties visiting to take part in heritage activities. We will visit groups and schools to share lots of information, deliver presentations and bring activities with us. Our Heritage Centre will have rooms for hire, a state of the art kitchen and outside facilities to enjoy our garden. There will be displays showing the finds from under the building and items that are currently not on show in the church. We will run craft courses for adults that relate to items in the church such as stone carving, stained glass making, calligraphy, candle making etc.

We are creating a programme of events to share with you the heritage of a corner of this market town. The church is always open between 9.00am and 5.00pm so please drop in and see what we are doing. If you would like to be part of this project as a volunteer (we are currently seeking researchers and cataloguers for our finds), please get in touch with the Heritage Officer on 07435 564 236 to learn about the opportunities available.

LIGHT

www.ashbychurch.co.uk

OF THE WORLD

MANy of us were brought up with the rhyme “Remember, remember the fifth of November” and certainly the festivities of 5th November continue to catch the imagination of young and old. Over the years it has become an institution, celebrated with bonfires, and ever bigger, brighter and more expensive firework displays each year.

But have you ever stopped to think of its origins? Fireworks originated in China and were first made around 2000 years ago. Thanks to Guy Fawkes in 1605, however, we have now come to associate them with the 5th November, harking back to his foiled terror attack against King James I to blow up parliament. His punishment was to be burned on a ‘bone-fire’, something still simulated today – just for fun of course! Guy Fawkes was a prime example of how dangerous fire

80

Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby

can be. Just think of forest fires, fires down mines, even the Great Fire of London in 1666 which destroyed 13,000 homes. Fire has great power. Yet when controlled, fire can also be incredibly useful. We use it for heating, cooking, transport, manufacturing, even the odd relaxing candle-lit evening!

It can serve an even greater purpose though; to remind us of Jesus – the ‘Light of the world’. Just like the contrast of the bright flash of fireworks against the dark night sky, Jesus stands out as someone to follow. Although we may sometimes feel that the world hasn’t moved on from Guy Fawkes, with its terror attacks, famine and disasters, fire can remind us that Jesus is able to give us all hope. For the world can be changed for the better by all those things which Jesus came to bring: love is more powerful than hatred, peace is more powerful than violence, and light is more powerful than darkness. The future is bright, the future is… Jesus.

venture theatre news IS November too early to start thinking about Christmas? Here at the Venture Theatre we have been thinking of it for several weeks with our next production Comfort and Joy in rehearsal. Christmas dinner is a disaster, relatives arrive who always get on your nerves and you receive presents that you can’t wait to get rid of! Sound familiar? This hilarious play, written by the singer and comic Mike Harding, is all about the sort of family Christmases that are all too familiar to many of us. At the Venture Theatre, we usually try to choose a play for the start of the Christmas season that has a festive theme and that will also send the audience away at the end aching with laughter. This one certainly fits the bill. It was put on at the Venture Theatre in 1999 and brought the house down then. 18 years later we feel sure it is well worth another showing. Director Paul Smith says: “It was 19 years ago when I first read this play; then it was brand new. I grew up with

84

the comedy of Mike Harding (The Rochdale Cowboy), and his contemporaries Jasper Carrot and Billy Connolly, so I found it difficult to read through the whole play without collapsing with laughter. History seems to be repeating itself at the rehearsals already. Another bonus is that some of the original cast are still available to take on roles and they are still laughing! I am enjoying producing this show again, so I hope you'll come along and enjoy the finished product with us.” The play opens on Thursday 24th November and runs to Saturday 26th and from Wednesday 30th November to Saturday 3rd December. Tickets are available now from Ashby Tourist Information Centre (01530 411818) and online at https://www. ticketsource.co.uk/ashbydramaticsociety So if you want to know how a psychotic cat, a flatulent dog and strange new neighbours fit into this chaotic Christmas scene, have a really good laugh and go home feeling grateful that your own Christmas can’t possibly be as bad, don’t miss Comfort and Joy.

fitness tips

Hold off Diabetes WE all know that being active and taking regular exercise is good for us both physically and emotionally but more importantly it can play a vital role in helping our bodies deal with various health problems, one of these being diabetes. There are over 4 million people living with this condition in the uK according to figures released by diabetes uK in 2016, with 80% of these being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is very often associated with excess body weight, high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol. Fortunately type 2 diabetics don’t have to rely on insulin injections and can help control their symptoms with the right diet and exercise.

Exercise can also massively help to prevent and treat Type 2 diabetes in many ways. Firstly, the more active we are, the easier it is for us to manage our weight, which is a huge contributory factor. Also regular exercise will also help to reduce cholesterol levels as the more body fat we lose the lower our cholesterol levels will be.

Exercise plays a large part for people with type 2 diabetes in helping them prevent any long term complications. Unfortunately, people with diabetes are at more risk of developing blocked arteries which can lead to a heart attack, so the fitter you are the lower the risk of this happening.

Before any exercise program is started its very important that you make an appointment to see your doctor so he can check on your heart health and blood pressure, once your doctor is happy for you to start, away you go. Just remember it is really important to allow your body to build up fitness gradually, especially if you haven’t exercised in a long time.

Try your hardest to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week as your long term health really does depend on it. We all find it hard at times to motivate ourselves especially on those cold winter nights when all you want to do is stay snuggled by the fire, but this is when it’s a good idea to encourage friends and family to join you, the key is to make your sessions fun and interesting as once you start trust me you won’t look back! Furthermore, exercise can be free, can be carried out anywhere and anytime and has immediate effect on your health. AT FITNESS REPuBLIC we are dedicated to help you exercise safely and effectively. Why not try one of our 7 Day Free Passes, and see what were all about! We will guide you all the way to ensure you feel very comfortable and at ease with us. Visit www.fitnessrepublic.co.uk and fill out our 7 Day Pass sign up form on our home page.

body matters

Sprains & Strains...

with Sarah Kavanagh, Ashby Osteopathic Clinic

SPRAINS and strains to muscles and joints happen to all of us and for most they are a painful, but temporary reminder to be a little more careful. Prompt action can help your body to heal faster and may prevent further injury or prolonged pain.

Strained or ‘pulled’ muscles often happen when we over exert untrained muscles, train without properly warming up or try to go beyond a joint’s natural flexibility. Sometimes we feel the pain straight away, however some injuries might not cause pain until later on. What can you do?

Remember RICE (Relative rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation), using these can help to relieve the pain and start the healing process.

RELATIVE REST : The first thing to do if you feel pain is to reduce the offending activity – pain is usually your body’s way of telling you that there is something wrong that needs your attention. It can be normal to feel a little sore after exercises for a day or two, but if it is more than this, pushing through the pain is rarely beneficial.

However, movement stimulates the healing process so stay as mobile as you comfortably can. Try to keep the joint moving through a comfortable range of motion, without forcing it to the point of pain. This will help to encourage blood flow and keep your joint flexible whilst it heals. This is particularly relevant for back pain as gentle exercise, such as walking, can help. You should slowly build your activity levels up as soon as your symptoms begin to resolve and as soon as you are able.

ICE : Cooling the area using an ice pack can help to reduce swelling and pain. Wrap a thin tea towel around the area so as to avoid direct skin contact and then apply the pack to the injured area for 10 to 15 minutes. You should repeat this several times per day for the first 72 hours. This will help to control inflammation, making it easier for your body to get blood and nutrients to the area and resolve the injured tissues.

COMPRESSION : Gently applying a compression dressing may help to temporarily support the injured joint and reduce swelling, though remove this immediately if there are signs that this

104

www.ashbyosteopath.com

is reducing the circulation to the area (numbness, pins and needles, the skin turning white or blue etc).

ELEVATION : If the injury is in the lower limb (knee or ankle), elevating the area a little can make it easier for your body drain fluids that might accumulate around the area, causing swelling. For example, if you’ve hurt your knee, sitting down with the knee raised on a low foot stool may ease your pain.

Seek medical attention. If you have pain that can’t be controlled with over the counter painkillers, can’t put weight on the injured limb, experience paralysis or loss of sensation or the swelling is very bad seek help from your local A&E department, urgent care centre or telephone 111 for advice.

If the pain or swelling fails to improve within a week, a visit to an osteopath may be beneficial. They will be able to assess the injury, advise you on the correct treatment and can provide some manual therapy which may help it get better faster. For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book an appointment please call Tristan Hill or Sarah Kavanagh on 01530 440 442 or email contact@ ashbyosteopath.com or please feel free to visit www.ashby osteopath.co.uk

Fry Porks Night

“Are you the guy selling hotdogs?” A stocky man with a bald head approached Paul’s stall. Paul had been left in charge. Angela, who was the first aider, had abandoned him to deal with a couple of incidents. He might have known this would happen, the special Parish Council bonfire night never passed without incident. Knowing the Risks

Alcohol causes around 10% of the UK’s deaths and diseases and is linked to 60 serious conditions. Yet over 9 million people in England exceed recommended drinking limits.

THIS year, Alcohol Awareness Week (14th-20th November) focuses on ‘Knowing the Risks.’ So what are they - and how much is too much? THE MAJOR HEALTH RISKS Cancer: Alcohol is a major cause of cancer and increases absorption of carcinogenic chemicals from tobacco. It’s responsible for many oesophagus, bowel, liver and breast cancers, and around a third of throat and mouth cancers. Just one daily drink increases your risk.

Brain function and mental health: Long-term misuse can cause memory and reasoning problems and changes mood, personality and the brain’s shape, size and structure – symptoms of Alcohol-Related Brain Damage (ARBD) or AlcoholRelated Brain Injury (ARBI). It can also cause alcohol-related dementia and earlyonset dementia.

Liver damage: Liver disease deaths are at record levels. The liver processes alcohol, but too much can cause cirrhosis (liver scarring), hepatitis (liver inflammation) and fatty liver disease.

Heart and Circulatory System: Just one drink a day raises blood pressure, increasing the risk of hypertension (permanently elevated blood pressure), stroke and heart attack.

Diabetes: Alcohol misuse can lead to chronic pancreatitis, while alcohol’s appetite stimulation and calories can cause obesity. Both conditions can lead to diabetes.

Pregnancy & Childbirth Problems: Drinking in pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth, and foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in your baby, potentially resulting in stunted growth, facial abnormalities, epilepsy, hearing and ear problems, hormonal disorders, liver damage, kidney and heart defects, a weak immune system and learning and behavioural problems.

Accident and Injury: Even small amounts of alcohol impair coordination, reaction times and decision-making, making driving and machinery operation far riskier. In recognition of this, Scotland has reduced its drink-drive limit down to just 22mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Reduced Fertility: Regular and/or heavy drinking can reduce male fertility through impotence and reduced testosterone, libido, sperm quality and sperm quantity. Even light drinking can reduce female fertility.

Impaired Development: Alcohol can affect the normal development of the brain, liver, bones and hormones in adolescents and affects their mental health and judgement, too. If 15-17 year olds drink alcohol, it should be under parental supervision and never more than once a week. Under-15s shouldn’t drink at all.

HOW MuCH IS TOO MuCH? Alcohol Concern says there’s no ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption as regards cancer risk and the government, in light of recent evidence, has reduced and renamed its recommended limits. Its new ‘low risk’ limit is a maximum of 14 units a week for men and women, spread over at least three days. A unit is around half a pint of normal-strength lager or a single measure (25ml) of spirits. A small (125ml) glass of average-strength wine contains around 1.5 units.

Remember, too, that some of us process alcohol less efficiently. Women usually have less mass, a higher fat to water ratio and lower levels of the alcoholprocessing enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, and our genetic make-up also affects the efficiency of this enzyme.

chess puzzle

CHESS PuZZLE White to play and win.

The world chess championship runs from 11 to 30 November in New York. Sergey Karjakin (26) is challenging Magnus Carlsen (25) in a high octane match of 12 games. If it’s tied, an Armageddon game may be played. That’s still chess. Now the puzzle here would be solved in seconds by these two grandmasters. You may take a little longer. Note: as in this position, you can be a piece down and still win.

To play chess you don’t need to be a grandmaster or under 25. Just come along to your local chess club at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Call Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details.

122

Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
