With the freezing temperatures outside as I write this it feels strange to be working on our Easter issue and I’m longing for those longer, lighter days with hopefully warmer weather. Nevertheless Easter is only a matter of weeks away and on pages 58 & 59 we have all the details of the local Easter church services. One thing that always amazes me about Ashby is the sheer volume of local events whatever the time of year. This month we bring you details of the upcoming Town Council events, the Aldi Ashby 20 Road Race, ideas for family fun over the Easter break and our usual What’s On guide for March. Happy Easter everybody!

TOWN COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Welcome to the first Town Council newsletter of 2018. We have lots of news to share and plenty of dates for your diary. However, let’s start by looking back to the close of 2017 and the launch of the new Christmas lights and tree. We’d like to thank everyone for their feedback. All of your views will be considered when we are planning the lighting schemes for 2018 and beyond. Back to 2018 and we’re very pleased to announce that the 2018/19 budget has been set and charges for Council Tax have been frozen. The Ashby Neighbourhood Plan is currently with the Examiner and assuming no major issues are raised we will proceed to the next step; a referendum by early Summer. Blackfordby has now been recognised as an area requiring a Neighbourhood Plan of it’s own. Focus groups have been launched to start looking at the detail of this following a successful meeting on 5th February. Work on the Ashby Project is well under way across all quarters. The Heritage Quarter team now have a prioritised list of potential improvements to our open spaces and town signage. Work on the car park in North Street, as part of the development of the Culture & Leisure Quarter, has temporarily slowed as the discharge of a planning

10

condition for surface water drainage is due from Leicestershire County Council. Nevertheless completion is still expected in late Spring / early Summer. There will be an event to relaunch Ashby Lido (the open air pool) in May. The town walking and cycling strategies are moving forward. As part of the Marketing & Rebranding of the town we have produced three videos promoting the town and the Ashby Project all of which can be viewed on our newly revamped website: www.ashbydelazouch.info Finally we’re working closely with Ashby Town Centre Traders to plan improvements to the shopping centre of the town. Ashby has some amazing events coming up this year. Here are the highlights for the first half of the year. Look out for later events and more details on all of those listed below in upcoming issues. ASHBY LADY OF LOURDES CHURCH The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes was designed by Frederick Walters in the French Romanesque style. The foundation stone was laid in 1913 and most of the building work took place during the Great War. It was almost finished by 1916. Mass and other services were being celebrated by then. However, for various reasons, the Church was not totally complete until the 1920s. Initially the new Church was served by the priest from the established parish of St Charles, Measham, where the Church shared a building with the school. Both Churches were built through the generosity of the Hastings (Loudoun) family, with Flora Paulina Hetty Barbara Hastings, Duchess of Norfolk, leaving jewels in her will to be sold to build Our Lady of Lourdes. As the Church was mainly built during the war, and because the date of completion is uncertain, the parish community is celebrating our Centenary Year in 2018, the centenary of the end of the war. Bishop Patrick McKinney celebrated Mass for us on Sunday, February 11th, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. We had a wonderful day with a full Church and a celebration lunch at the Royal Hotel. Ashby Catholic Community is now bigger than

Measham, but St Charles Primary School, now in its own buildings at Measham, still serves the children of both parishes and has strong links with both. You can find out more about the Church and parish at ololstcharles.blogspot.co.uk or by contacting Father Colin Patey on 01530 412237. The school contact details are on stcharlescatholicprimarymeasham.org, and 01530 270572.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Is your child nervous, scared or anxious

at the idea of a haircut?

This month’s spotlight article takes a closer look at an invaluable service available for parents of children with additional special needs. Does your child struggle in social situations? Are they nervous, scared or anxious at the idea of a haircut? Tip Top Hair Design based in the Ferrers Centre at Staunton Harold are well known for their hair salon and barber shop but did you know they also have Jigsaw Days especially designed for children with additional special needs, ADHD, Autism and other conditions on the spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders? Jigsaw Days take place once every eight weeks on a Sunday when the salon is normally closed. You’re guaranteed a private, calm and safe environment. The salon is well set up with toys, a box of fidget toys and stress balls, games, tablets and PEC cards to help relieve any sensory issues. Snacks and drinks are provided. Plus, every child completing their haircut receives a certificate of their achievement. The friendly staff; Jacqui and Ruth have hands on experience with these type of needs as both have children on the autistic spectrum. They are well aware how tricky a simple visit to the hair salon can be. For children on the spectrum it can simply be

an overload of sensory issues – hair falling, unusual noises, odd sensations to name but a few. Since launching in August 2017, the Jigsaw Days have been a huge success with five star reviews and glowing praise from customers. Michelle has been taking her son; Sammy along to the Jigsaw Days and has been bowled over by the service she has received; “They go above and beyond anything I’ve known before (and believe me we’ve tried our share of hairdressers!). They understand. Simple as that. They understand, accommodate and let him lead Th he haircut. Sammy started off not liking scissors th being used, so they managed with just clippers. b Ruth constantly sweeps hair away from him, as she R kknows this completely freaks him out. Without her doing this I wouldn’t even get him on/off the chair. He now trusts these two ladies and not only have they helped him get over his fear of scissors he even had his hair washed at the salon today. Sounds like nothing? Any parent with kids on the spectrum will understand... this is major! I cannot praise Tip Top hair highly enough. They’ve turned around a very traumatic experience (for my son and myself) into one he actually quite looks forward to... Oh, and his hair looks amazing too…” If you’d like to find out more visit their Facebook page @jigsawdaystiptop or to book an appointment for the next Jigsaw Day then please call 01332 862740.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Hard Drive Failures and Cloud Backup Here at PC Clinic we are seeing an increase in Hard Drive failure, both on desktop PC’s as well as portable laptops. There is no way of telling when it will happen, but rest assured at some stage your Hard Drive will most likely give up behaving. So, for those of you who don’t know, a Hard Drive is the storage device for your computer. Not only does it store all the files and program information that makes your computer work, but it also stores any documents, photos, music etc. We can re-install Windows, we can install your programs again subject to relevant licences, but your personal data can be another story altogether. We are often tasked with data recovery, and on less serious cases, we can get most of the data back. More affected drives often end up being referred to our data recovery specialist, and the costs here tend to increase quite a bit! So, what is the best way to prevent data loss? Firstly, look at doing regular backups, either manually or using software to automate the process. Common backup media used are DVD’s, USB memory sticks and

USB external hard drives. The trouble here is that DVD discs deteriorate and are small in capacity, as are USB memory sticks. Then you have external hard drives which are great until they decide to fail too! So what is the best solution? We heavily recommend that you do one of the above, regardless. Couple this with an off-site cloud based backup solution which automatically sends a copy of your precious data to a system “out there” which only you have access to. That way if all else fails, you have 2 additional places where your data is located, one of which wouldn’t be located with the computer. From a disaster situation, having your data stored in the cloud is a brilliant idea as it’s always safe and stored away from home.

Visit our dedicated website, www.protectplus.info for package details and options for cloud backup solutions.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Monkey puzzle tree This is a really unusual looking tree which bears no resemblance to a monkey. It is in fact a type of conifer that has the official Latin name Araucaria araucana. Native to Chile it is the hardiest of all the conifers and grows over 40m high. It is incredibly prickly with rigid pointed needles along its branches. It was once commented that it might be very difficult for a monkey to climb and hence the common name ‘monkey puzzle’. These trees date back 200 million years and were around at the time of the dinosaurs. You can see a huge 40meter high monkey puzzle tree locally at Calke Abbey, close to the road that runs between the house and the church. In this parkland setting this tree is perfect. It is a tree not appropriate for small domestic gardens. I suppose because they are available about a meter high and look like fantastic structural plants, which they are, people buy them not realising they get too big for most gardens. As they grow these trees become very greedy and take all the water and nutrients from the ground

around them, so much so that very little will grow underneath. Also these trees tend to drop their branches and the huge heavy prickly branches could do some serious damage. A young tree has branches down to the ground but as they become older they shed the lower branches. A mature tree with its lower branches all shed looks rather like an enormous chimney sweeping brush. This species can live for as long as 1000 years and the trunk could have a diameter of over 3 metres. Surprisingly, Araucaria can be found on the slopes of rocky volcanoes and its bark is fire resistant, even surviving lava flows! However, in order to thrive, the monkey puzzle tree requires cool moist conditions which are free of pollution. In Chile local tribes eat the seeds from the tree and these are a staple of their diet. Every tree has either male or female flowers. The seeds are dispersed by squirrels and birds and are pollinated by wind. In the 1800s and 1900s the timber from the Araucaria was used in mines as props for railway sleeps and paper pulp. As the trunk of the tree is big and straight it was historically used for ship’s masts. However since 1990 the trees have become protected.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Spring into Life

Yellow daffodils along a green grassy bank, pink cherry blossom on the trees, bright blue skies and frolicking white lambs in the fields…Springtime brings a wonderful array of colour stemming from the beauties of new life. It’s so amazing to watch the flowers bloom, see new animals be born or hatch and everything start to warm up a bit! Interestingly, the origin of the word ‘spring’ stems from the old English word ‘lencten’ or lengthen, relating to the lengthening of the days and the increasing amount of daylight; something it feels like we’ve been waiting a long time for! As much as we might like the winter with it’s bright, crisp days (and the odd cloudy, wet one!), the fun to be had in the snow and the cosy winter nights, we can’t help but look forward to the light and warmth that spring intimates is on it’s way. It’s a bit like this in the Bible. Just like in the natural world around us we see all the ‘dead’ plants coming ‘back to life’, so the Bible talks about the new life we can have through following Jesus. One story which

30

really brings this to life is the story of Noah. From a world covered in water where everything seemed dead, God saved a faithful man, his family and a pair of every kind of animal, in order to bring back to life the population of the world. And when he had placed them safely back on dry land he put a rainbow of many colours in the sky, as a promise that he would never flood the world again. He gave them new life. This new life also brought new possibilities and opportunities; to try new things, maybe new ways of planting, new places to explore and new hobbies to take up. So coming into spring, perhaps it might be apt to come along to Ashby Christadelphian Church and find out more about the new life God offers you and his promises of a new world. After all March is the time to ‘spring forward’ not ‘fall back’!

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Trent Valley

TThis month we visit our second d of the six carved noon columnss. o EEach of these represents the ccharacter of a different part of tthe National Forest and this one iis carved in the form of a flood marker reflecting the natural wetlands in which it is located. Croxall Lakes is situated at the joining of the River Trent with the Tame and the M Mease and provides habitat for a ri and breeding birds. There wide range of wintering he edge of the lake, close to is a hide situated on the the noon column, and itt is well worth taking a pair of binoculars. Among the sspecies seen on site are d short eared owls lapwings, oystercatchers and n water voles being there are also signs of otters and present. We took our dogs on th this walk up to the x noon column but if you want to explore further you should be aware that there are parts of the site where dogs are not permitted.

2

Our walk starts at the Croxall Lakes Nature Reserve car park which is situated on the A513 at Alrewas. If you are coming in from Catton it is on the right just after you go under the railway bridge. The closest postcode for Sat Nav users is DE13 7AR. This short stroll a like to takes less than 30 minutes though you may e reserve or spend time exploring other parts of the e hide. You doing a spot of bird watching from the could also combine your walk with a trip to the a National Memorial Arboretum (adjacent to Croxall o on the Trent & Lakes) or a visit to Fradley Junction e aaway). We fo a lovely quiet spot in n terms of meeting very few people but don’t be surprised tto see trains passing by on the embankment above you fairly regularly. p There are a few openings where you can walk e shore of the lake getting a good o right down to the view of the island in places. Ju ust keep following w the marker posts (2) along the h wide track as itt bends around. After a while you willl come to the h bird hide (3) on your left hand side e. The sun will shine directly ec to the thrrough the h slot for about 15 minutes around true no n oon (which is 12.06 in wintertime and 1.06 in summertime). ti O n On the opposite side of the track to the noon co n is an archway (5) which leads underneath n olumn the railway line and into the eastern side of the n ur reserve. THE ASHBY PROJECT

The Ashby Project Last year we brought you news of the launch of the Ashby Project and its ambitious plans for the regeneration and development of the town. Work is ongoing across all of the stakeholder groups and an update of their progress to date is in this month’s Town Council newsletter on page 10. The Brand and Marketing team have accomplished a great deal with the official launch of the new town logo and branding back in November. This can now be seen on the doors of Legion House and on the wonderfully redesigned Town Council website; www.ashbydelazouch.info Jo Holland, tasked with co-ordinating all of the teams has now taken the next step and welcomed on board the very first Ashby Town Brand Ambassador; David McDowell – aka The Bee Farmer. We met with David to understand what this means and more importantly, why he has chosen to do this. David is well known locally primarily for his Bee Farmer products such as honey, candles and wax products stocked by The Health Workshop in Rushton’s Yard and North’s Deli on Bath Street. However, this is only one side to the business. David now offers experience days for all ages which include a safe-guarded tour to view a live hive. He also offers local children education at Key Stages 2 and 3 providing tailored bee experiences based around their science curriculum. School even have the option to rent their own hive! Working with Chestnut Woodlands Forest School in Moira, David is also running BeeKeeper Training courses.

Town Council are proud to have local entrepreneurs such as David working closely with our retailers, schools and residents. It’s all mutually beneficial. If you’re a local business owner or brand then you could be just what Jo and the team are looking for to grow awareness of the Ashby Project and promote our town. You can contact Jo at joholland@ashbytowncouncil.org.uk To find out more about David and the many services and products he offers then visit www.thebeefarmer.co.uk or follow him on Facebook - @DavidTheBeeFarmer

So what does the role of Brand Ambassador involve? David’s products will now feature the new Ashby Town logo alongside his own logo. It’s a marketing partnership – showing that each supports the other. David is proud to be a part of the Ashby Community and to show support for the town and the exciting plans for growth and redevelopment led by the Ashby Project. Ashby 54

BEAUTY TIPS with Zowie from Mrs P’s Powder Room. This month we welcome on board a new addition to our panel of local experts; Zowie from Mrs P’s Powder Room. Zowie kicks off her beauty tips with some invaluable advice on looking after your nails…… 1. A great way to protect your nails from staining would be to use clear high gloss nail varnish purchased from any superstore and reapplied as required …. just remember if you do have gel under always remove polish with non-acetone nail varnish remover. 2. Always get nail enhancements removed by a professional to avoid damaging your natural nail. Most nail technicians remove the product they have applied for free if replacing or for a small charge. What’s better? Fresh nails in a beautiful condition or weak thin nails that break and tear?? NEVER PICK THEM OFF!!

grit such as 200/240 is gentler so is better for your natural nails. Always only file one way as this is less traumatic to your nail bed, never back and forth. 4. Use hand moisturiser regularly. Look for one with UV-Filter to protect the hands from premature aging. 5. Use cuticle oil ….massage into your cuticles and nail bed 3 times a week to keep your nails and cuticles hydrated. 6. Exfoliate your hands! Yes, exfoliating isn’t just for your body, you should do this with a scrub containing botanical oils. This will remove old dead skin cells and moisturise your skin promoting new skin regrowth. Over time it will also REDUCE small lines and wrinkles!! Et voila, beautiful nails!!!!

3. When filing your nails at home always look at the grit of the nail file. A high

HOME & INTERIORS

Give your home a

new colour scheme

Starting a new year can make most of us feel quite uncertain but at the same time excited. So, to kick off this year’s first interiors feature why not give your home a fresh coat of paint? There are colour schemes that will give your home a fresh new look and get your home ready for the spring season. With the daffodils, snowdrops, blue bells and tulips all blooming in succession over the next few months they’ll be carpeting the woodlands and lawns with an extravagant display. Why not take inspiration from nature when deciding on colour schemes? This month we give you the top five colour schemes to choose from:

1. Golden Ochre - For an energetic start, go for the golden ochre which became one of the key trends last year. This yellow hue will energise and give your home a boost of sunny energy! 2. Sage Green Add a sage green colour with neutral walls to work with furniture made from natural materials. Include greenery such as house ferns and succulents and botanical wall art to add an amazing soothing colour which will give your home a sense of tranquility. 3. Shades of Purple - Pantone has recently announced its colour of the year “Ultraviolet”, so you will see shades of purple appear in many home furnishing stores. Accessorizing the room with vases, cushions, and soft furnishings will be enough to turn any head with this vibrant colour. Before too long, you will have bluebells to fill the vase! 4. All White - for those who are uncertain about which colour to go for, white on white is a great safe option for you to add any colour to the scheme. 5. Pink Blush - taking the inspiration from the pink blossoms, pink bluebells and tulips. A hint of pink will certainly work well with any soft pastels and fill your home with love, heartwarming feelings and happiness. 62

BODY MATTERS

What is arthritis? Welcome to all! This month I will be discussing ‘arthritis’. What is arthritis? Arthritis simply means inflammation of the joints (‘arth’ meaning joint and ‘itis’ meaning inflammation). There are many different types of arthritis, of which the most common is osteoarthritis (osteo-arthr-itis, bone-joint-inflammation). This particular type of arthritis is often referred to as wear and tear. This wear and tear can be age related, or can be due to past trauma such as a fracture, or overuse, for example a typist suffering with arthritis in their hands and wrists. What are the symptoms? Joint pain is the first symptom noticed by most people suffering from arthritis. This pain is generally persistent and can be aggravated by excessive movement or activity. Even writing, getting up from a chair, walking, typing, throwing a ball, holding an object, or turning a key can cause the problem to flare up. Often muscle tightness or over protecting the painful joint in the early stages after an injury

may increase risk of further pain. Inflammation of the joint is characterized by swelling, redness, and warmth. The body responding to the irritated joint causes this arthritic symptom, which is actually a normal reaction, but can occasionally leave the patient wary of over working the joint or putting weight on it. Joint deformity, occurs in more severe arthritic joints. For example in the hand, the fingers may look crooked, or in the knee, the joint appears larger. This is the body laying down more bone tissue in an attempt to stabilise the joint. As a result, the person suffering from arthritis is unable to use the affected area in the same way as before the arthritis set in. As you can imagine this is an arthritic symptom that shows up in the later stages of the condition Stiffness - Those with arthritis typically have a loss of the range of motion in the affected area. A person with arthritis in the shoulder for example, may not be able to lift his or her arm higher than a certain point. This may be related to deformity or may because of tightened muscles and tissues around the joint. How can osteopathy help? Unfortunately arthritis is an irreversible condition. So any existing bone wear and tear changes cannot be altered. However, osteopathy can help with 3 of the points above. Pain, swelling and stiffness. Using treatments such as massage, stretching, and mobility exercises I have had positive results with patients of all ages and stages of degeneration. Many arthritis sufferers are able to manage their symptoms well and are able to lead a normal life. As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition. For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book and appointment please call Sarah Kavanagh or Tristan Hill on 01530 440 442 or email contact@ashbyosteopath.com. VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

The Start of a New Venture? The Venture Theatre has a brand new website! Pip Gorringe has been working with Ashby based Kangaroo UK to give the website a fresh modern look using much of the existing content originally written by another one of our members, Wendy Freer. The website is frequently updated with what’s on at the theatre, allows you to book tickets online and has plenty of information on our past shows, history and our actors/ actresses. The Venture Theatre holds monthly meetings with the management team who voted on lots of exciting new ideas put forward by Kangaroo. Pip hopes the new easier to navigate website will attract new blood to the theatre not only to watch our shows but to act in them as well! Currently a Marketing Manager with 8 years experience in the industry, Pip kick-started and facilitated the entire process. Pip sees the website

and rebrand as a new start for the theatre; “This is just the beginning for the new website as soon we hope to add monthly blogs and also reviews of our performances to the website as well. If anyone has any other ideas then we’re all ears as we’re hoping to make it a vibrant exciting site that everyone can enjoy and gain something from. New pictures of shows, the theatre and cast members are also always welcome!” Visit our new website at www.ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

Childhood Memories We were delighted that our Childhood Memories loan box was recently borrowed by Griffydam Primary School to support Key Stage 1 and 2 learning. If other schools wish to make use of any of our 8 loan boxes, please get in touch with the Museum on 01530 560090. They cover a wide range of interests. Representatives from NWLDC have also borrowed two of our boxes in a presentation for training purposes and given us very positive feedback. Also we were pleased to loan a small section of our Standard Soap archive, to help with a practical talk on personal hygiene, to Stuart Warburton who used it with an after-school history club partnership between Coalville History Society, All Saints School and Ebenezer Baptists. Thanks to Robert Eaton, we have just been given further material from Stevenson and Barratt, who were important estate agents in Ashby for much of the 20th century. We will give more details of this acquisition in next month’s issue.

If there are any Davenports in the town who want to investigate their family history, we have a detailed family tree going back to Joseph Davenport 17101773. Please contact Pat Dixon on the above number. Friends of Ashby Museum The next talk will take place on Wednesday March 14th at 2pm. The speaker is Wendy Freer and she will talk about the life of Ann Ayre Hely, the Crimean war nurse who lived at Ravenstone. The cost is £3. Please book your place for what will surely be a popular talk. More details about the talk in May to follow.

COALVILLE WRITES

‘ Coalville Writes’ Literary Festival – March 8th to 10th –

Words in all their guises are coming to Coalville this March as part of Coalville Writes, a festival of writers and writing, poetry and prose and all things word-related for adults and children alike. Award-winning author, Joanne Harris, will be performing work from Honeycomb, a collection of 100 dark and interconnected tales to be published later this year. #Storytime, is a live show, featuring excerpts from the book, along with projections, original music and songs, written and performed by Joanne and her band. It premiered in London as part of the Tête-à-Tête festival and is an intimate, quirky and darkly magical show for anyone who loves folklore, fantasy and fairytale. Bittersweet Chocolate Co will be on hand to satisfy sweet cravings at a screening of Chocolat. Journalist Emma Bamford replied to a‘crew wanted’ advert, quit her job and bought a one-way ticket to Borneo to live on a boat with a man she’d never met (and his cat). She’ll tell all about her adventures in exotic, far-flung places and explain how she landed a publishing deal to write about her escapades. She’ll also be giving advice on life writing – including why it’s not always a good idea to start at the beginning! Emma Pass, author of critically acclaimed books for young adults (ACID, The Fearless), will give an insight into the secrets of creating alternative futures and imaginary worlds, from generating ideas to deciding what people in your world eat for breakfast! Sophie Snell, will deliver dark and twisted tales based on folklore from the furthest rural corners of the British Isles. Andy Reeves will help the children (and their adults) to invent monsters and bring them to life in drama and poems. Dr. Rhyme, our strolling minstrel, will be writing bespoke poems and a giant metal Whale might swallow you whole to offer a playful and submersive theatre experience. 88

There’ll be a chance to buy fantastic books that you won’t see anywhere else in the pop up book fair, with stalls from local writers, booksellers, and independent publishers, as well as screenings of Adaptation and The Borrowers and much, much more. Coalville Writes was created with support from Arts Council England, The National Forest and NW Leicestershire District Council. FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

All you

lovely ladies!

Like many of you lovely ladies out there I have also hit the big four zero, and am well aware that my body is changing and starting to prepare for a long and sometimes troublesome journey of what is known as the “female menopause”. Now, I don’t know about you but I take my health very seriously and know that I need to look after my body now more than ever to prepare it for the rollercoaster ride ahead. Women today are living 30-50 years after the menopause so it has never been more important to educate ourselves on health and fitness. Regardless of what stage of the menopause we are at, whether it be approaching it, going through it or enjoying life beyond it, the more knowledge we have on how to help our bodies

90

cope with this process, then the happier and healthier we will be. Depending on stage, there will always be associated health conditions such as hot flushes, night sweats and sleeplessness. These are just some of the milder conditions that may affect us, but one that is slightly more serious is osteoporosis. This is a medical condition often appearing for ladies during the menopause. The bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue due to hormonal changes that directly affects our bone density. This can have a massive impact on our daily lives causing pain, stiffness and tenderness in the affected area. Now it’s not all doom and gloom as although this can be quite a serious condition it is also one of the most preventable and sometimes even reversible. This most definitely isn’t done by popping fancy pills and potions, this is done by exercising and eating a sensible diet. Ensure

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

you get a wide selection of antioxidants from fruit and vegetables as they are not only essential for bone growth but will also keep our heart and vital organs healthy. Together with the correct diet, exercise is key to maintaining bone health. Studies show that lifting weights over a period of time can help prevent bone loss and may also even help to build new bone. Just following a simple plan of flexibility, aerobic and strengthening exercises for 30 to 40 minutes three times a week really can make all the difference, not only as a preventative measure for osteoporosis but also to keep your blood pressure down, your weight in check, your muscles and joints supple and to overall feel good about yourself! For any further advice or guidance or one of our FREE 7 Day Passes, please pop in and see us for a chat, and just remember that old saying – ‘Life begins at 40!’We promise you won’t be disappointed.

The lovely member pictured has dramatically improved her osteoporosis with regular strength training with us here at Fitness Republic. She benefits from regular guidance and program changes from our coaches.

The simple plot follows pompous Professor Henry Higgins (Keith Reynolds) and Eliza Doolittle (Laura Jones) as they weave their way into each others’ lives and hearts.

Added to all this, AMTG Producer/ Director David McKnight and Musical Director Alan Hutchinson have introduced an Opening scene and an Ascot scene to marvel at, which of course demonstrates their joint flair at bringing a musical completely to life! You have to be there to see what a marvellous and original job they have done!

l

8 sun-blush tomatoes, drained and chopped 3 tbsp freshly chopped coriander 2 tbsp olive oil

98

TOP TIP Cajun seasoning is a spicy blend of spices, chilli powder and herbs such as thyme and oregano. You’ll find it on the spice racks in the supermarket.

1. To make the meatballs,

place the pork, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, Cajun seasoning and coriander in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a few seconds until thoroughly mixed. Alternatively, mix well with clean hands.

2. Shape the mixture into 24

meatballs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 10-15 minutes until browned and cooked through. Shake the pan frequently to turn the meatballs.

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

3. Meanwhile, place the

couscous in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to just cover the grains. Leave to soak for about 10 minutes until all the liquid has been absorbed. Separate the grains by stirring with a fork. Add the onion, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Divide the hot couscous

between four serving bowls. Thread the cooked meatballs onto metal skewers and serve on top of the couscous.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

When is a church not a church? Many people today think of ‘the church’ as a building, but the word, from the Greek ‘ekklesia’, means “an assembly” or “called-out ones.” So the root meaning of “church” is not as a building, but of people. When Jesus’ followers met together in the early days of the Christian church, they met in private houses or in public spaces. But by the third century AD Christians had started to remodel existing buildings or build separate structures so that they had readily available facilities specifically for their needs. Here at St Helen’s we are a church of people who happen to have two rather wonderful buildings. The religious building, as well as being a place of worship, has had many other uses over the centuries - used by the local community as a meeting place for guilds or a hall for banquets, as a venue for plays or for fairs, and even, as a garrison for soldiers in the civil war. As for our new building, although it is very much a Heritage Centre, it also continues the tradition of being a multi-functional venue. Since its opening 4

months ago it is already a mother and toddler group, a conference hall, a music venue, a café, a board room, a party space, an art gallery, a lecture theatre, a dining room, a school classroom and even a ‘gym’ for fitness classes! So, how would you like to use this beautiful, and versatile, new building? To hire either our large hall or our meeting room, ring 07392 409745 to come and have a look around. We love showing it off!

PET’S CORNER

What Should You Feed Your New Puppy? Puppies require a special diet with extra calories and nutrients to help them develop strong muscles and bones. It’s easy to overfeed them when they’re young, as their stomachs are very small, so regular feeding throughout the day is better than giving them one or two larger meals. But what types of food should you offer your puppy, and how do you know how much to feed them? Complete dry foods Dry food can provide complete nourishment for your puppy, but you should buy the best you can afford. Although ‘premium’ brands are more expensive, you don’t need to use as much per meal as with the cheaper brands, due to their enhanced nutritional content. If your puppy doesn’t like dry food because it’s too hard, you can soak the biscuits in warm water for a few minutes to make them easier to chew.

Wet foods Tinned or pouched puppy foods are available in a wide range of flavours, but it’s advisable to choose one that your pet can easily digest, such as chicken and rice. As with the dry food, you can also buy ‘complete’ wet foods for your puppy, which are nutritionally balanced and highly beneficial for their development. Whether you feed your puppy wet food, dry biscuits, or a combination of the two, portion size is extremely important whilst they’re developing. Always check the instructions on the packet or tin, or ask your vet for guidance – they’ll also be able to keep a regular check on your puppy’s growth.

BOOK REVIEWS

March Medley

This month’s collection of recent releases includes modern fairy tales, a psychological thriller and historical fiction at its finest. Happiness For Humans P.Z. Reizen Romantic comedy meets sci-fi in this enjoyable novel. Aiden’s creators know that he’s an intelligent piece of software, which can read books in under a millisecond, review films and tell jokes. What they don’t know is that Aiden has developed feelings, or that his favourite person is Jen, who helps develop Aiden’s conversational skills. Aiden decides Jen would be happier in a relationship, so sets her up on a date. But Aiden isn’t the only intelligent AI on the loose, and not all of them have such good intentions. The Toymakers Robert Dinsdale It’s 1917 and pregnant teenager Cathy Wray seeks sanctuary at a London toy store. She soon discovers that these toys are unlike any she’s ever seen before. There’s a clockwork dog that’s devoted to his master, paper trees that grow from seed, and toy soldiers that wage battles on their own. Cathy learns to call The Emporium home, and the people who own it her family. But then the First World War breaks out, and nothing will ever be quite as magical again. The Toymakers is a must for fans of Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus. The Sacrifice Box Martin Stewart Five friends make a pact one summer’s day, when they find an old stone box in the woods. Several years later, one of them breaks the rules and dark forces are unleashed, including a killer teddy bear, zombie crows and a demonic puppet. The five must put aside their differences and come together to appease the box before it’s too late. Aimed at teens and young adults, The Sacrifice Box is a winning blend of coming of age drama and supernatural horror.

White Chrysanthemum Mary Lynn Bracht Approximately 200,000 young Korean women and girls were enslaved by the Japanese army in the Second World War. Thousands of these ‘comfort women’ died from the abuse they experienced. White Chrysanthemum tells the fictional story of 15 year old Hana, who is kidnapped after stepping in to rescue her little sister, Emi. Several decades later, we meet Emi in her desperate last attempt to find out what happened to Hana all those years ago. While White Chrysanthemum is, at times, painful to read, it’s impossible to put down and a must-read for lovers of historical fiction. The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night Jen Campbell This collection of modern fairy tales is dark, twisted and beautiful, and range from the macabre to the heart-warming. You’ll read about a mermaid in an aquarium, a boy who suspects his sister has two souls, and a man who uses animal hearts to keep his girlfriend’s love. There are elements of wellknown myths and fairy stories, but this collection is more Brothers Grimm than Disney. Captivating. Everything Is Lies Helen Callaghan Sophia arrives home one day to find her mother dead and her father lying in a pool of blood. The police are convinced it’s a clear case of attempted murder-suicide, and Sophia is the only one who can prove her mother’s innocence. As she delves into her mother’s past, she uncovers tales of a secret cult, and learns more about her family, and herself, than she could ever have imagined. A tense psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns.

COULD YOU BE AN ISA MILLIONAIRE?

Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are a great way to invest free of tax on the income and any capital gains. The amount you can put in each year has gradually increased. A growing number of people are becoming ‘ISA millionaires’ as a result of rising stock market prices, and the steady increase in the annual ISA allowance. GENEROUS ANNUAL LIMITS The allowance for the 2017-18 tax year is set at £20,000, meaning that couples can put away up to £40,000. Sadly, it seems that the ISA message hasn’t filtered through to everyone. HMRC has produced data that shows only two thirds of those earning more than £150,000 a year use up their ISA allowance each year. With pension contributions subject to annual and lifetime limits, ISAs represent an excellent way of topping up retirement income, although the cash or shares could be subject to inheritance tax on death, unlike the types of pension that can be passed on to beneficiaries more taxefficiently. MAKING IT TO A MILLION If you were able to invest your full ISA allowance in a stocks and shares ISA every year, the ISA limit increased by around

2% each year, and your investments made an annualised return of 5% after fees, you too could join the elite band of ISA millionaires in 22 years (purely an example for illustrative purposes). Of course, we must underline that this is not guaranteed, because stock markets can and do go down as well as up. PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE If you’re planning to invest this tax year, it’s a good idea to put plans in place as early as possible. The longer your money is invested, the more time it has to produce tax-free returns. You can’t carry any unused ISA allowance into the next tax year, so don’t risk missing out on the valuable tax breaks available. We can help you investigate the choices on offer and help ensure you use your allowance wisely. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current investments and financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, on 01530 567020.

CHESS PUZZLE

Beiein inngg the thhe bes ests Wilhelm Steinitz, born in Prague in 1836, was the first undisputed world chess champion, from 1886 to 1894. He was also a prolific writer on chess and introduced some new ideas. There was fierce opposition, and so began an ‘Ink War’ in the media. Steinitz won and his theories are still being used today. This position arose in M Hewitt v. W Steinitz, London, 1866. Black has sacrificed a rook to get an attack. It’s Black to play and win. One way starts with 1...Rf2+, but what is the other sensational way to win? If you have a passion for chess, please come to our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Beginners welcome. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
