Ashby Life Ltd

October issue Thursday 14th Sept

Autumn has always been my favourite season so whilst the final bank holiday weekend signifies the end of the summer along with the return to school and shorter days, darker nights I don’t feel gloomy. There is so much to look forward to across the rest of 2017 in Ashby. September in Ashby means the Statutes will be in town, October heralds the return of Ashby’s FABulous (page 18) swiftly followed by Halloween, Bonfire Night and then the excitement of (dare I say it?) Christmas. On page 26 we have all the key dates of upcoming Ashby events in the latest newsletter from Ashby Town Council.

Rockleigh House 37 Burton Road Ashby de la Zouch LE65 2LF

This is a particularly exciting month for the Ashby Life team as we embark on our first fundraising event; Charity Link’s Leicester 3 Peaks Challenge on Sunday 24th September. Find out more about what we’ve signed up for on page 10! Wish us luck (we may need it).

Would you like the chance to go camping, climbing, potholing, lead community projects while transforming young people's lives? As a section leader, you will do all of this and more, using your skills and learning new ones. As part of 4th Ashby Scout Group, you will plan and deliver a safe and exciting programme for young people, making sure every young person gets the chance to spend at least one night away each year. SPOTLIGHT ON...

Our Leicestershire

3 Peaks Challenge!

Earlier this year we decided as a team that we would find a local fundraising event to tackle together. The intention was to show support for one of the many smaller local charities we showcase each month in the magazine by raising the maximum amount of money we can to help their cause but also to find the perfect event to test our strength, stamina and team skills. There were so many to choose from – this year alone we have covered Help for Heroes, Measham Community Library, Age UK, People Express, Alex’s Wish and many more invaluable local charities working tirelessly within our community. In June we told you all about a wonderful local organisation called Charity Link and the work they do impressed us so much we decided to tackle their upcoming event; the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge. To recap, Charity Link works to improve the lives of people in poverty, hardship or crisis across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire. Funds raised are used to provide everyday items that can make a massive difference to people’s lives, items such as beds, clothing, cookers, mobility equipment and visual aids and also to provide food in emergencies. Charity Link offers this support to individuals in need across our entire community. This includes elderly and disabled people, the victims of domestic violence, those with a chronic illness or mental health issue and vulnerable families struggling to make ends meet.

The challenge itself takes place on Sunday 24th September and involves a 16.5mile trek across fields, woodlands and even quarries. The walk takes in the two highest peaks in Leicestershire – Beacon Hill (814ft) and Bardon Hill (912ft), along with the famous Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, plus a few other hills along the way (including Billa Barra). With a target completion time of 6 to 7 hours we will be pushing ourselves to the limit. Training has begun in earnest….. Our aim is to raise as much money as we can to support this amazing charity. If you would like to sponsor us then please visit our JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ashbylife. Every penny helps so no matter how small your donation it will be gratefully received. We will keep you posted on our training and our progress on the day via our Facebook page so if you’re not already, remember to follow us on www.facebook.com/ashbylife.

Wish us luck!!! If you’d like to learn more about Charity Link and all they do then visit www.charity-link.org If we’ve inspired you to tackle Leicester’s 3 Peaks yourself and you want to sign up to join us on the big day then contact Rachel Markham at rachel.markham@charitylink.org or download the registration form on the website.

Ashby’s FABulous

Put Saturday 7th October in your diary now! For the fourth year, Ashby’s FABulous will be transforming Ashby town centre into a gallery of live models as the shop windows come to life! The theme for this year is the 1920s. Imagine jazz music, flapper dresses and the Great Gatsby….Gold balloons will adorn the shops and help promote a sophisticated party atmosphere. The models will be posing from 10.30am to 12noon and then again from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. In their lunchtime break Market Street will be running street entertainment from local dance schools including JAKs Academy and Stagecoach. There will also be live music from a local swing band from Music Academy for Schools covering a whole host of tunes by Irving, Berlin, Gershwin and Cole Porter. This unique event always draws in the crowds and last year there were 43 live windows and 86 models involved across so many different businesses from butchers to beauty salons, cafes to DIY shops. The whole town

pulls together each year to celebrate our shops, cafes, bars and other businesses. This year the reins have been passed over to a brand new Ashby FABulous team who hope to help the event continue to flourish and grow even bigger. The team consists of Sarah Brooks (Sarah Brooks Photography) who will be perfectly placed to capture some great shots of the big day, Rachel Austin (Dolce Café) and Natalie Bone (Events Administrator for Ashby de la Zouch Town Council). Many of the models for last year’s event came from Ashby School or the businesses themselves but if you know anybody willing to pose for a few hours or would like to volunteer yourself or just offer some help then please contact the ladies at ashbysfabulous@outlook.com

TOWN COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

There have been so many events in Ashby this summer and each and every one has had a great turnout and immense local support whatever the weather. On Saturday 22nd April the Italian Street Market returned to Brook Street with a wide range of delicious fresh Italian produce which proved to be very popular. At the end of May, Ashby Art’s Festival was another huge success with seven galleries across town, a multitude of events and the amazing outdoor gallery. The first ever Ashby Festival of Transport took place on Sunday 2nd July with an array of vintage cars and vehicles. And now in its eighth year, Jim’s Tractor Run and Family Fun Day once more took over the Bath Grounds and in fact the whole town with its parade of almost 100 tractors and vehicles on Sunday 30th July. Despite the showers the town turned out in force to enjoy the rides, stalls and ever popular Fun Dog Show. New this year and a huge hit were Charnwood Forest Alapacas. There are plenty more events coming up and here’s a reminder of the dates to put in your diary: 15th to 19th September – Ashby Statutes 1st October – Phillip Bent Commemoration Ceremony 7th October – Ashby’s FABulous 11th November – Armistice Day 12th November – Remembrance Day 2nd December – Christmas Fair and Market 3rd December – Santa’s Fun Run More details of each of these events can be found on the Town Council website and will be shared via Ashby Life. AND IN OTHER NEWS…. Over twelve months ago the Town Council acquired two defibrillators for use in the town centre. These have now been installed at each end of town with one placed near to the public toilets on Derby Street and the other in Huntingdon Court. Work is due to begin on North Street with demolition of the old Health Centre imminent. The addition of a new car park with 48 parking spaces is just one of the developments planned for North Street. The car park will be kitted out with electric points and facilities for future town events and access to Hood Park Leisure

Centre improved along with general regeneration of the area. The Ashby Project is progressing well across all areas with development of the marketing and branding of the town nearing completion. We will bring you further details of this in upcoming issues. Ashby’s Neighbourhood Plan has now been submitted for consideration by North West Leicestershire District Council. Following a consultation period of six weeks it will then be subject to an examiner report. Finally, the town council have invested in a new Christmas lighting scheme for Ashby. We won’t give too much away as we don’t want to spoil the surprise but the trees we have had in recent years will be replaced. The large tree outside WH Smiths will remain as will Blackfordby’s usual lights and tree. DATES FOR TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS These are published on the Community Board of Ashby Life each month. The public are welcome to attend and there is always a slot for public questions. Find out more about your Town Council by visiting the offices at Legion House, South Street, Ashby de la Zouch, calling 01530 416961 or via the website at www.ashbydelazouch.info

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Bent VC was a courageous soldier and leader of men whose valour during the Great War deserves greater recognition than it has received to date. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, yet was educated at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School. After enlisting as a Private at the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914, Bent showed such talent and leadership that by the time of his VC action on October 1st 1917 he was one of the youngest soldiers to hold the rank of (Temporary) Lt-Col in The Leicestershire Regiment, known affectionately as the “Royal Tigers”. Finally, LtCol Bent showed such outstanding gallantry in leading his men that he was awarded a posthumous VC. He was only 26 years old when he was killed leading a charge after shouting, “Come on The Tigers!” Ashby Museum is publishing a book on the centenary of his death on 1st October, to coincide with the laying of a VC Paving Stone behind the Town War Memorial that Sunday. A temporary exhibition at the Museum will run from mid September until mid November. The Museum will be holding its Annual General

Meeting on Saturday September 16th at 10.30 a.m. Members of the public are very welcome to attend. Come along and meet us and find out what has been going on during the previous year. Light refreshments are provided. Friends of Ashby Museum The talk on Wednesday September 20th at 2 p.m. will be about the history of the brewery and will include some information on the work they did on Cafe76. Please book your place at the museum, either in person or by calling 01530 560 090.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Sunday School is Sunday Cool..! What does the term ‘Sunday School’ mean to you? Old fashioned and outdated? Pointless and unnecessary? Our local and national daily newspapers are full of reports of increased crime rates, addiction and depression in the younger generation. It may surprise you that the Bible can provide the answer to these and other problems. That’s where Sunday School comes in. Bible teachings can give children a really positive set of values and a sense of purpose in life, as well as respect for other people and a perspective on the world we live in. The Bible teaches God’s principles and encourages positivity, optimism and hope for the future. By learning these things, our children can be better equipped with the tools to live respectful, loving, honest lives – values which we hope most people would agree are worth aspiring to.

Helping children to live, laugh and learn is something we, at the Ashby Christadelphian Church, have supported for many years. We have classes catering for children from age 4 upwards. Younger children have lots of fun with craft activities, singing and bible stories; older ones have fun too in more grown up ways; all the time, building Bible based life-skills and friendships. If you’re still not sure about Sunday School, why not come along to one of our weekly charity coffee mornings held at our hall on Thursdays between 10am and 12noon? You can meet some of our members, see the Sunday School rooms, look at the displays and get a feel for the place. Alternatively check out our website www.ashbychurch.co.uk. IN YOUR GARDEN

Your favourite colour

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360

My suggestion is to choose a single colour, your favourite colour probably, and make that the theme of your garden. This one colour concept was first made popular by garden designer and writer Vita Sackville West in the 1930s.

sometimes had white marbling or variegation. She used white blossoming Almond trees for structure at the centre of the garden, and also lots of white Roses, Delphiniums, Veronica, Artemissia and Gypsophilia.

Vita made a famous white garden at Sissinghurst, in Kent, which is now open to the public through the National Trust. She divided acres of gardens into rooms by planting hedges and having walls to create separate spaces. The flowers were only white, whilst the foliage was green or grey, and

Closer to home, the white garden created at Coughton Court in Warwickshire shows what might be achieved in an average sized garden with a single colour.

Alternatively, the rhythmical repetition of flowering plants in shades of blues against the monotone green of the grass and smart hedges would be truly stunning. A lively red or orange scheme may be more your thing, however these colours are generally difficult to grow in a shady space. A compromise may be for such hot colours to be in a sunny south facing border. As with all colour options, you can extend the season of flowering by planting spring or autumn bulbs as part of your planting plan. Using a single colour emphasises the form, shape and textural quality of the plant. A restful and unfussy garden can be achieved by only using green and banishing any other colour, and even any flowers. Both traditional and modern spaces can be created with just green hedges. A limited pallet of colour and plant can be crafted in a way to give different styles and atmospheres. A little careful planning is all that is needed. Happy gardening!

BEAUTY TIPS with our resident beauty expert, Emma from Rose Beauty! Have you ever experienced sunburn? I’m guessing that almost all of us have! Yes, we know it’s wrong and we kick ourselves when we are wincing with pain but what is happening to our skin when we burn? What Is A Sunburn? A sunburn is the skin’s response to extreme ultraviolet (UV) exposure. In as little as 10 minutes of intense UV exposure, the skin sets into motion a system of defence. The first indication of damage is redness. This is the body’s inflammatory response in situations requiring repair and is a result of dilating blood vessels. The skin will then start to lose moisture, which will be apparent with a feeling of tightness. Slowly, skin cells will start to thicken and melanin pigment will be produced (tanning) this is the bodies attempt to stop the UV rays from penetrating to the deeper layers and damaging the DNA of the cells. I Have A Sunburn, What Should I Do Now? Get out of the sun immediately. If skin is severely blistered, seek help from a medical practitioner.

Drink plenty of water as you may be dehydrated. Take a cool bath (no products added) and then blot skin dry. Apply a soothing after-sun gel to red areas and stay out of the sun and the heat. Look for ingredients such as Clove, Liquorice, Lavender, Cucumber and Yucca to reduce irritation, pain and redness. If exposure is greater than the body’s ability to repair then more serious consequences may result. Irreparable damage may have occurred in the form of premature aging or skin cancer that may only reveal itself later. So think twice next time you decide “just another ten minutes,”

TECHNOLOGY

Tech for the new term The best solutions for students and schoolwork It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey

Dell Dimension £369

Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best allrounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but

Google Chromecast £30-£69

50

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99).

Lenovo P2 around £300

In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money. co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be.

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS When it comes to choosing colours for paint, many of us would go for a lighter colour as we fear dark coloured walls or ceilings would make the room look darker and feel smaller. This has always been an uncomfortable topic for most people - even the professionals! What if there were actual beneficial reasons for you to paint the walls or ceilings in the darker shades; i.e. to make a room with taller ceilings feel lower, or to make larger areas feel more cosy….would you then consider darker shades to get the desired effect? There are many things which can be hidden in the dark as they become less noticeable or invisible to the human eye, this is why many theatre backdrops and ceilings use dark shades, even black, to conceal the chaos of messy cables and equipment! So, in this issue, we will focus on the benefits and reasons for painting ceilings and walls in darker shades to balance the proportion and amount of light exposure in our living spaces. • Emphasis of paneling or feature trims • To make a ceiling look lower

Interior tips with FABCO in-store designer Eddie Ong • To make a ceiling look taller by painting it the same dark colour as the walls • To add drama • To conceal ‘messy’ cables or unattractive walls • To echo other elements in the room, or to add your own ‘cool’ style! We hope this feature has given you food for thought, and that you’ll look at darker colours in a whole new light!

BODY MATTERS

Patella femoral syndrome What is the patella-femoral joint? The knee joint is made up of 3 bones. The femur (thigh bone), the tibia (the leg bone) and the patella (the knee cap) The patella (knee cap) sits in a shallow groove (the trochlear) at the front of the femur (thigh bone). This joint is known as the patella-femoral joint. As we straighten and bend our knee the patella moves up and down in this groove. Like all joints, this joint is lined in cartilage and bathed in synovial fluid. This enables the patella to glide smoothly up and down in its groove. What are the symptoms of patella-femoral syndrome? The primary symptoms is pain or aching in the front of the knee. This is usually worse when sitting with a bent knee for prolonged periods of time. Squatting and kneeling positions could also aggravate the pain. What causes patello femoral syndrome ? Repeated stress on the joint can weaken and soften the cartilage, and this is what causes the pain. As the cartilage breaks down, instead of the patella (knee cap) gliding smoothly in its groove, it rubs against it and causes pain. The damage can vary from a slight disruption in the cartilage to a complete breakdown in the cartilage and bone on bone contact. Things that put stress on the joint include: Overuse – such as a lot of high impact exercises and jumping sports Muscular imbalance – causing the knee cap to move incorrectly in its groove Prolonged sitting – as there is more pressure on this joint when the knee is bent Other biomechanical problems, increasing stress across this joint. Such as flat feet, knocked knees, bowed legged etc Previous trauma – such as a fractured knee cap Arthritic conditions 58

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Treatment Treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms and identifying the cause. Treatment may involve Resting from activities that aggravate the pain and applying ice. A doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories Taping techniques to improve the position of the knee cap and how it moves up and down in its groove Soft tissue massage techniques to loosen tight structures Strengthening exercises to correct the alignment of the knee cap Correction of underlying factors such as orthotic to correct flat feet As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition. For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book and appointment please call Sarah Kavanagh or Tristan Hill on 01530 440 442 or e-mail contact@ashbyosteopath.com. SCARECROW FESTIVAL

Heather Scarecrow Festivall the 2017 winnners

This year’s Heather Scarecrow Festival was another huge success from the sheer number of scarecrows involved, the variety, the quality of the displays, the tongue in cheek humour of many and the way the whole village came together to proudly show all the crowds of visitors just why you should visit year after year. All this despite the constant threat of a downpour (yes, we got caught in one of those). The winners have now been announced and we’re glad to see our own personal favourites were up there in the top five! What about yours? Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

PARENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO INSURE THEIR POSSESSIONS THAN THEIR HEALTH

Whilst 75% of UK families have home contents insurance, only 13% have income protection insurance for themselves or their partner.

Yet the data gathered in a recent survey (Aviva 2017), reveals that 43% of parents are concerned that they or a member of their family could develop a serious illness. More than one in four UK families say they have experienced a loss of income due to ill-health, serious illness or death of a long-term partner. Events like these can cause severe financial problems that can be difficult to overcome. HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY MORE RESILIENT Being a parent brings huge financial responsibility, so it can really pay to have a plan in place that would provide protection if the family experienced one of life’s unexpected and unwanted events. Coping with a long-term illness or injury can be stressful enough without the added pressure of money worries. Taking out an income protection plan will mean that there are funds available when they are needed most.

These policies pay out if you’re not able to work and earn money due to illness or injury. They provide valuable protection for breadwinners, the self-employed and employees who receive limited or no sick pay from their employers. TAX-FREE PAYMENTS The maximum amount you can claim is usually your net monthly earnings after tax, minus any state benefits you may receive. This could be around 65% of your gross earnings and is usually tax-free. Policies pay out after a deferred period, typically between four and 52 weeks, and can continue until you return to work or the policy term comes to an end.

There’s a wide range of policies and benefits available so it makes sense to get advice that will help you make the right choice for your family circumstances. Please contact Ian Staley, Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Planners Limited on 01530 567020.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Vanity?

I remember when I started weight training and going to the gym at 13 years old, and back then it was all about getting bigger muscles to impress!

Whatever your reasons for going to the gym they are the right ones. That means if you’ve made a decision to start training for a particular reason then it’s your personal reason and it can’t be wrong in any way. At this time of year we hope we’ll have some sun and be exposing our bodies more. All of the promotions we see are geared towards that beach body program in preparation for this. The problem with this is that leaving yourself with a few weeks to get in shape is going to be hard work. Getting that body of your dreams, the ones you see in magazines and on social media, takes time. What you can do in a small amount of time though is make a real difference to your current shape and fitness, and even faster progress can be made with the addition of a proper training plan and some personal one to one attention.

turn makes our joints have to work harder. Have you ever seen a 65-year-old person that hobbles about, but in contrast seen a different 65-year-old that is still running marathons? I use the analogy that if you had an old car and never started it up and never gave it a run out every so often, the chances are it wouldn’t start when you needed it, but if you started it up and ran it a few times per week then it would give you more chance of it lasting longer. This is the same as the human body, give it a workout and challenge it a few times per week and chances are it’ll last a bit longer and give you a better quality of life. Health & Fitness need not always be about the way you look. After all the most important muscle in the body is the one you can’t see - The Heart! So please don’t think that the gym is all about muscles and bodies, there’s much more to it than that, and at Fitness Republic helping you is what we’re all about, so pick up the phone, call us today and get your engine started!

At Fitness Republic personal one to one training has increased dramatically. Years ago it was deemed only the rich and famous could have a trainer, nowadays it’s much more affordable and a good trainer can accelerate your results through the roof! (Remember though that some of the bodies that you may aspire to take many years of training and healthy eating.) Back to my previous point that as I’ve got older my initial purpose for training has changed. I still want to look the best I can as this helps me to have more confidence and to feel better and more positive about myself, but now I also want to be healthy and fit from the inside too. As you get older we start to lose muscle, and this in

ON THE BEAT Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is used within Leicestershire to help detect, deter and disrupt criminality including tackling travelling criminals, organised crime groups and terrorists. As a vehicle passes a police monitored Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera, its registration number is read and instantly checked against database records of vehicles of interest. Police officers can intercept and stop a vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests. The use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition in this way has proved to be important in the detection of many offences, including locating stolen vehicles, tackling uninsured vehicle use and investigating cases of major crime. It also allows officers’ attention to be drawn to offending vehicles whilst allowing law abiding drivers to go about their business unhindered. Searches of Automatic Number Plate Recognition data can confirm whether vehicles associated with a known criminal has been in the area at the time of a crime and can dramatically expedite investigations. Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Advanced Electrolysis

Advanced Cosmetic Procedures (ACP) uses shortwave diathermy to remove a large variety of skin blemishes such as skin tags, blood spots, thread veins, spider naevi, warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, milia, epidermoid cysts, age spots and other benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions. Most ACP treatments give superb results with most blemishes being completely removed. Even quite large skin defects can be treated so as to leave little or no flaw, particularly when compared to the scarring that remains following traditional surgical removal.

Skin Tag Removal

Many people have skins tags which can be quickly and safely removed using ACP. These benign tumours typically grow to about the size of a grain of rice but can be as big as a raisin or even larger. They may be flesh coloured or pigmented and some are pedunculated (grow on a fleshy stalk). They can be successfully removed by ACP leaving smooth skin once the area has completely healed.

This is an inexpensive, quick and safe procedure – Free initial consultation by fully qualified, insured and licenced practitioner

SEASONAL RECIPES

lamb koftas WITH MINTED COUSCOUS

S E RV E S4 Ready in 50 minu tes

This flavour-packed dish is great for a late summer lunch or dinner. Serve with warmed flatbreads and tzatziki, if liked. FOR THE KOFTAS l l l l l l l l

1350g lean minced lamb ½ red onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 2tsp ground coriander 2tsp ground cumin 1tsp smoked paprika 2tbsp fresh chopped coriander Squeeze of lemon juice

FOR THE COUSCOUS l l l l l l l l

225g couscous 3tbsp olive oil 1tbsp lemon juice Âź cucumber, finely diced 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 3tbsp fresh chopped mint 4 tomatoes, cut into chunks Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish

TOP TIP Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

METHOD 1. To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic, spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced. 2. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for

Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs.

PET’S CORNER

How to keep an eye on your It’s important to regularly check your rabbit for signs of illness, as it’s not always obvious when they’re unwell. One of the best ways to do this is to wrap them in a towel to stop them moving around while you check the following: Eyes Eyes should be bright, clear and dry. If they’re runny it could be a sign of dental problems, a scratch on the eye, or possibly in-growing eyelashes. Nose and mouth The nose should be dry and clean. Check that your rabbit’s front teeth aren’t chipped or broken by holding their head with one hand, and gently lifting their lip with the other. Ears There should be no redness, dirt, wax or discharge in your rabbit’s ears. You may need to sit in a good light or shine a torch when checking their ears, as it can be difficult to see potential problems in this area. Feet You’re checking for any abrasions, inflammation,

rabbit’s health or build-up of dirt in their paws, and also that the heels of their back feet are not sore. The best way to check the feet is to hold your rabbit with their back against you. Bottom It’s crucial to check their bottom is clean as flystrike is a serious threat to rabbits during the warmer months of summer and early autumn. You may need to bathe their bottom regularly for this reason. Skin Rub your hand against the direction of their fur - skin should be free of lumps, abrasions, and inflammation.

Intriguing Reads

Secrets, lies and mysteries are at the heart of this month’s picks. The Marriage Pact Michelle Richmond Newlyweds Alice and Jake are invited to join The Pact. The group seems to have just one goal – making marriages work. All members need to do is agree to follow the rules for a happy marriage, and accept support if they struggle. However, as Alice and Jake soon find out, there are consequences for breaking the rules, and The Pact is, like marriage, for life. A tense psychological thriller you’ll want to devour in one sitting. Pieces of Happiness Anne Ostby Recently widowed, Kat invites her four old school friends to join her on a cocoa plantation in Fiji. Now in their sixties, the women each have their own reasons for wanting to leave their old lives behind. Together they set up as chocolatiers, and let the island heal old wounds and allow them to make peace with their lives. As the subtitle says, this is a ‘Novel of Friendship, Hope and Chocolate’. Perfect for fans of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The Life She Was Given Ellen Marie Wiseman Lily knows she’s different. After all, her parents have kept her locked away for all of her nine years, in case she scares people. But then one day, in 1931, her mother drags her away from Blackwood Manor, and sells her to the circus. Fast forward to 1956 and Julia returns back to the home she ran away from. Two women, one house, 25 years apart; will the secret of Lily finally come to light? HEALTH

Organ Donation Week Organ Donation Week (previously called National Transplant Week) takes place from Monday 4th to Sunday 10th September this year. This awareness week is vital because organ donation is still mired in myths. But it saves lives, and that life could be yours or that of a loved one. 96% of us would take an organ if needed. Yet only 29% of us are on the Organ Donor Register. “People waiting for transplants depend on people being willing to donate their organs and sadly, on average, three people die every day across the UK due to a shortage of donated organs,” says Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant. The Need for Donations In the UK, fewer than 6,000 people a year die in circumstances where they can become a donor and many are unregistered. There are currently 6,342 people on the UK transplant waiting list. During the last financial year, over 400 people on the waiting list died. The most commonly transplanted organs are the heart, kidney, lungs and liver. But the pancreas and small bowel can be transplanted too, along with tissues such as corneas, heart valves, skin, bone and tendons. Becoming an Organ Donor Joining the Register expresses your wish and legal authorisation to donate organs. Everyone who is legally competent can register, irrespective of age and health. However, you cannot become an organ donor if you have Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), cancer that has spread in the last 12 months or HIV (although you may be able to donate to another person who has HIV). Although children can register, their parents or guardians are still asked for consent before donation occurs – except for Scotland, where parents or guardians of children aged 12 and above can’t legally overrule their wish to donate. Donation of organs usually occurs after brain stem death (permanent loss of brain activity) or circulatory death (irreversible loss of heart and lung function). However, currently living donors outnumber deceased donors from either group. So, what’s ‘living donation’?

114

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Living Donation In 2016/17, 950 people became living donors. Living donors can donate a kidney, a small part of their liver or discarded bone (after a replacement operation). If you have a planned caesarean, you can donate blood from the umbilical cord after birth. This contains stem cells that can treat life-threatening diseases like leukaemia. Living donation is particularly vital for the 5,000 people in the UK who need a kidney transplant. Last year, more than 250 patients died waiting for a kidney. Donating your kidney straight to a recipient you know is called directed kidney donation. “We hope people across the UK will get behind the week and the opportunity it presents to focus people’s attention on organ donation,” says Sally Johnson. How to Register as an Organ Donor You can register online at www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ register-to-donate/ or at your GP surgery. You can also register when applying for a driving licence, European Health Insurance card (EHIC) or Boots Advantage card. Wales adopted a soft opt-out policy in 2015. If you don’t opt out of organ donor registration, you’re presumed not to object to being a donor. How to Donate Organs or Tissues as a Living Donor: To donate organs, contact the transplant centres listed at www.odt.nhs.uk/transplantation/transplantunits-in-uk/ To donate tissues, contact the National Referral Centre on 0800 432 0559 or email: national.referral.centre@ nhsbt.nhs.uk. ROADSHOW

COMES TO TOWN Krugerrand

Breitling

THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in The Royal Hotel, Station Road, Ashby De La Zouch LE65 2GP and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.

Amber Urgently Required

Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.

116

So, on Monday 11th September you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! CHESS PUZZLE

The Long Battle –

The annual British Chess Championship is held in August, so you just missed it!

Bla lac acckk too pla lay ay and annd draw drraw w

In the first round the stronger players take on the weaker.

8

The top rated player, grandmaster David Howell 7 (grade 2702) with white, played Graham J Moore (grade 2155). The difference in grading meant it 6 was unlikely Mr Moore would even draw. So what happened? Black defended well and the endgame commenced at move 44 with a drawn position. Mr Moore then held out until move 107, with the position shown here. The black king has three moves. Only one will draw. Which is it?

To play chess you can visit our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at the Ivanhoe Social Club. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cloudy2Clear GUARANTEE All Customers That An Average Quote Will Take No Longer Than 20 MINS!!!
