PROPERTY ADVICE

Advice On Presenting Your Home For Sale As local independent estate agents, we know that it is imperative to advise our clients on the complete house selling process. As always, first impressions are important to a potential buyer’s decision making process. Listed below are our top tips on readying your home for the market: 1. Many prospective purchasers will drive past your home before arranging a viewing. If the property looks untidy this could be a chance lost. Windows should be cleaned, paintwork wiped down, pathways and driveways swept and the garden tidied. 2. Make space for your prospective buyer to park outside the front of the house. Driveways should be well presented and cars sensibly parked to give a true reflection on the amount of parking on offer. 3. Welcome prospective buyers into what could be their new home. If the weather is cold then light the fire or get the central heating on to give a warm, homely feeling.

Made to measure curtains, valances, pelmets, tie-backs and cushions etc. Velvets, prints and plain fabrics.

Call in and see our huge range of blinds (including Venetian, Vertical, Roman, Pleated and NEW Vision blinds)

14

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

4. In our opinion buyers still value a proper home so ‘de-personalising’ isn’t always a positive thing, however ‘de-cluttering’ almost certainly is! An extra cleaning effort can feel like hard work, however ensuring that your home is spotlessly clean will set you apart from the competition. 5. Often home to toys, spare paint and old projects, it is worth tidying the garage so that a viewer can at least appreciate the space on offer. 6. Finally, be prepared for viewers to look everywhere! Especially on a second viewing, buyers will more than likely want to see inside storage spaces, airing cupboards, wardrobes and maybe even in the loft.

SANTA FUN RUN

Sign up TODAY for the

Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk 2017!!

Ashby Life are very proud to be sponsoring the Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk for the third year running and the 2017 event, organised by the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle, is promising to be bigger than ever. Over 1,000 Santa’s took part in last year’s event and early indications are even more will be running, walking and maybe even dancing through Ashby on Sunday 3rd December. Amazingly last year’s event raised over £11,000 for local charities including Hospice Hope. This year four local charities have been chosen to benefit from the funds raised – these will be Hospice Hope, Rainbows Children’s Hospice, Wishes 4 Kids and Staunton Harold Sailability Trust. All have been chosen in recognition of the great work they carry out within our community across all ages and all groups. More details of each charity can be found on the Ashby Santa Fun Run website. So that even more funds can be given to these wonderful charities every Santa entering is being asked to raise some sponsorship of their own – they can even choose which of the four charities their sponsorship money goes to. This is a great way for friends, parents and grandparents to show their support. Entries are now open so don’t delay signing up. simply head over to the website: www.ashbysantarun.com. It couldn’t be easier – simply fill out the online entry form. Countdown to the big day by following Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk on Facebook and don’t forget to head down to the Bath Grounds to watch the start and cheer them on along with the ‘real’ Rotary Santa.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

How to avoid

Wireless Woes….

With an abundance of devices needing wireless connection to the internet, we find ourselves getting more and more frustrated with the performance and range of our wireless networks. Many routers provided by Internet Service Providers are adequate but by no means superb. However, many ISP’s prefer you to use their routers for convenience and support, so here are a few suggestions on how to improve your signal: Firstly, make sure your router is off the floor and ideally in the centre of the house, thus giving an improved coverage. Make sure there are no obstructions around the router, especially electronic devices, phones, microwaves etc, as these all have an ability to interfere with the signals.

Many standard routerrs use an automatic channel selection, but this can be unreliable at best. For those of you who are more “techno minded”, try a free Wifi Analyzer app which can tell you what channels other nearby routers are using. Then you can select a better channel which doesn’t clash if you know how to do that on your router. Whilst there have been many DIY methods including making a reflector out of tin foil to beam the signals, it is often easier to invest in a Wireless Extender or Repeater. The basic type simply take a good signal (say in another room in the house) and boost it. If the signal is rather poor, or you want a signal to be available a fair distance away from the router (say a summerhouse), you can use powerline kits. Powerlines are a brilliant bit of networking hardware, and so easy to install. You simply plug them into the mains and they communicate over your electric network, thus giving you endless possibilities. Wireless versions are also available offering you a reliable alternative to using plug in signal repeaters. To find out more about repeaters and powerline adapters, come in and see us for a friendly chat. We are sure to have a solution available for you at your local Which? ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Remembering It’s that time of year again… “Remember, remember the 5th of November” – a time when we light bonfires to remember and celebrate the foiling of the infamous ‘Gunpowder plot’ to blow up King James I and his government. On the very night Guy Fawkes’ plot was thwarted in 1605, bonfires were lit to celebrate the safety of the King. It became an act of thankfulness for the king and his safety. Today, we still light bonfires to remember this event. How often however do we stop and remember events and people who have been significant in our lives? Life is so busy we barely have time to reflect on the events of the last 24 hours let alone think about important people and moments throughout our lives. That’s the point, we rarely do. There are countless individuals in history who have led significant lives and had a huge impact on the world we live in today. How often do we stop and think about them?

30

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

If someone actually died so you could have a better life wouldn’t you stop and remember them? I’m guessing you would. Well, this is exactly what Jesus did. Two thousand years ago Jesus suffered and died as an act of love for us. He died and was then raised to life again so we can have a hope of a better future; eternal life if we choose to believe in him. Surely this is worth remembering? While we’re finding time to celebrate a foiled plot from 1605, let’s also take time out to remember other momentous events in our individual and collective lives, not least of course this incredible act of love from Jesus who gave literally everything, including a brighter hope for our future. Take a moment and remember today. Useful Bible passage to look up: Romans 6 v23 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes Spotlight on

This month’s spotlight charity was brought to our attention by one of our regular advertisers; The Flooring & Bed Company who told us about all the wonderful work this charity carries out. As with all our local charities we’re sure you’ll be amazed to find out more about the tireless work carried out by their volunteers and the vital role they play in our community. Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes (LRBB) are entirely run by volunteers with the aim of providing support to the local NHS and associated organisations in a variety of essential ways. This includes providing a free courier service for hospitals in Leicestershire and Rutland transporting blood, pathology samples, scans and other medical essentials. They also help with the transport of donated breast milk for premature babies at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in liaison with Midlands Milk Bank. In addition to this they will soon be delivering blood to the Leicestershire Air Ambulance base at Castle Donington. There are currently around 65 members in the charity including a Fleet Controller, Membership Secretary, Fundraising Co-ordinator and of course the team of Riders. As well as providing the essential courier services members have their work cut out building awareness of who they are and what they do, raising funds to cover the cost of the vehicles tax, insurance, fuel and service costs and of course recruiting new volunteers.

There are currently several roles available for volunteers, all vastly different yet equally important: Controller: The first point of contact for each job. They speak to the NHS, get the details of what needs to be moved, liaises with the riders and monitors the rider progress to ensure they are safe. Fundraiser: This may be standing in front of a supermarket shaking a money tin or giving a presentation talk to a group of scouts, rotary clubs or a school. It’s all vital in helping LRBB to deliver their service. Rider / Driver: The duty riders are the front line of blood biking. Riders are ‘on call’ for a shift (typically 7pm to 7am). Riders will be 25 years old and above and must have 2 years recent experience in handling and riding large motorcycles. They are usually active motorcyclists who will own and ride their own motorcycle. If you’re interested in any of these roles then simply email supporters@lrbloodbikes.org.uk

You can find out more information at www.lrbloodbikes and you can keep up to date with all their latest news on Facebook (LRBloodBikes) and Twitter (@LRBloodBikes). If you feel that you could help either through fundraising activities or sparing some time then you can also email enquiries@lrbloodbikes.org.uk

FABCO show their support for LRBB!! Local firm; The Flooring & Bed Company are keen advocates of Leicestershire Rutland Blood Bikes. As Tony explains; ‘We were first made aware of Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes (LRBB) through a good customer of ours, Jonathan Bostock and his wife. They had had a personal close connection to the life-saving job that LRBB did after their first granddaughter was born prematurely and needed urgent life-saving blood products. Jonathan’s passion for their cause and his unwavering commitment really inspired us to help, and the rest they say is history!” The Flooring & Bed Company have made a lump-sum financial donation to help with the fabulous life-saving services that they provide throughout the Midlands area and beyond, as they rely solely on charitable donations and fund raising activities.

Tony went on to say; “It is our intention to make this worthwhile cause one of our Charities of the Year for 2018 and we hope the local communities will actively support both this charity and the events that we will be holding throughout 2018 in support of LRBB”.

Tony and Eddie hand over their donation

HERITAGE CENTRE

Remembering…. At a recent conference, I told another delegate I was grateful for the name-badges we’d been given. ‘At least I won’t forget my name!’ I told him. I was only half-joking: remembering, at the grand old age of 46, seems to be getting more difficult. I really do go upstairs and wonder what I went for; I forget people’s names and fall-back on the warm Yorkshire catch-all ‘Love’, and have been trying to buy honey for weeks now but somehow always come home without it! Good, then, that there are a couple of special services at St Helen’s Church over the next month to help me – and us – remember. The first, on Sunday 5th November at 6pm, is called ‘A Time to Remember’. This is a quiet, reflective service when we remember our loved ones who have died, read out their names and light a candle in their memory. There will be beautiful music, inspiring readings and the company of others who have been bereaved.

1 OCTOBER – 20 NOVEMBER

You’re very welcome to join us. Then on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November, at 9.30am St Helen’s is hosting the town’s traditional Remembrance Sunday service. At the same time, Holy Trinity is hosting a service suitable for younger children before we meet together at the war memorial just before 11am. And on any Saturday or Wednesday you can come to the Heritage Centre to remember (or discover) Ashby’s story. Come and remember – lest we forget. Revd Mary Gregory Rector of St Helen’s Church

AMTG NEWS

Our Spectacular Return to Ivanhoe College! This month we wanted to look back to our sell-out Concert on 7th October at the Ivanhoe College and celebrate the wealth of young talent we are proud to have in our Group. From Thomas Longland’s and Evie Midgley’s hysterical performances in the opening Willy Wonka sketch, to Elliot Hill’s and Olivia Carroll-Walsh’s poignant performances in the Oklahoma sketch in the second act, our audience saw how truly talented and versatile our younger members are. We are very proud of them all – Maisie Axton, Adam Bailey, Josh Benfield, Abby Betteridge, Olivia Carroll-Walsh, Ella Cope, Millie Dagley, Elliot and Oscar Hill, Thomas Longland, Evie Midgley, Emily Poole, Hannah Rushman, Eden Wedgbrow and Jenny Wells. Special mention must go to the outstanding solos by Ella Cope (“Where is Love” from Oliver!), Eden Wedgbrow (“How Far I’ll Go” from Moana), Evie Midgley (“Home” from Beauty and the Beast), and Olivia Carroll-Walsh (“Quiet” from Matilda). The girls sang with such maturity – it is hard to remember they

are all age 12 and under – we were bursting with pride to watch them entertain our audience. We were also fortunate to include some of the hugely talented girls from Dance Network in our programme. All were incredible (Darcy and Sophie Boddington, Lillie Davenport, Maisy Walker, Eden Wedgbrow) and the acro performance by Chelsea Scott and Alice Jarvis to the Skyfall soundtrack was breathtaking. So on to My Fair Lady – you can still join our great group, come along and see how truly remarkable AMTG is! For further details of how to join, please send an email to enquiries@amtg.org.uk. We really look forward to hearing from you!

LOCAL BUSINESS

Hola to new local business – Angelus! This month we welcome on board a new local business with a difference; Angelus specialise in providing unique, bespoke tours to European teenagers to learn English here in the UK. The team consists of Dominique and Elena. They have recently relocated to Ashby from Bath and are hoping to get to know all you Ashby folks out there. Angelus are currently seeking host families within Ashby for their 10 day immersion tours next July. The students are from Asturias on the northern coast of Spain and are needing families willing to offer a home from home experience for their stay in the UK. The families are rewarded with excellent rates of pay per night in exchange for their enthusiastic, welcoming interaction with these motivated and dynamic pupils. The immersion programme offers the language students a dazzling array of cultural, educational, historical and sports activities to entertain them throughout the week and as such, they leave their host families after breakfast and return for an evening meal from Monday through to Friday. No transport or lunches are required for the students during this time.

Dominique

The intervening weekend sees the student stay with their host family and participate in English family life. Angelus are extremely keen to hear from you – particularly if you have teenage children. This has been a very successful venture in Bath with most of their host families signing up year after year and some lasting European connections made between host and student. For more information please call Dominique on 07712 341734 to discuss hosting in more detail.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Scented winter plants Tiny flowers can produce an explosion of winter scent. It is often the rather unassuming looking plants like Sarcococca confusa, a plain evergreen plant that over the winter will produce a mass of creamy white flowers. The smell is like sweet vanilla and it fills the air.

Similarly, the very pretty pink and heavily scented Daphne ‘Jacqueline Postill’ is one of the winter flowering varieties of Daphne, that will stop you in your tracks to search for the source of the heady perfume. Note that Daphne can be tricky in the local clay soils and so grit and soil improver is a good idea at the time of planting. Many plants that are usually discreetly in the background can be valuable at this time of year. A garden is not just about summer January and February highlights are equally as important to plan. There is a spicy scent from the frail yellow flowers of Hamamelis ‘mollis’, or Hamamelis ‘Wisley Supreme’ and ‘Jeremy Gold’ are also both very scented. The variety with a deep burnt orange flower is ‘Vesna’. Hamamelis are commonly known as witch hazel, but

some don’t have a scent so do look out for one that I have listed above. A sheltered place in the garden, one that you frequently walk past, is an excellent place to put your winter scented plants. Indeed a pergola or porch is perfect for the winter flowering honeysuckle, Lonicera ‘Winter Beauty’. This one has a stunning sweet smell from its flowers which can last from December to April. For me the star plant for winter scent is the Viburnham in the varieties V. ‘Charles Lamont’ and V. ‘Dawn’ which can flower from October to April. They are a welcome sight and smell. The tiny flowers are pink/white in clusters. In the bare winter this plant becomes a focal point. Some Viburnham can grow up to 3 meters high and so are useful shrubs, and they require little maintenance. For your winter scented pots, remember that some Crocus’s are scented and in particular, Crocus ‘Bowles’s White’ is excellent. It has pure white petals from yoke yellow centres and will start flowering in January. Similarly Iris unguicularis ‘Mary Bernard’ will flower in a large pot with gritty compost, or in well drained soil within a border, ideally facing some sun. They will come up every winter from November to February with fantastic purple flowers. I suggest a pot or two of these with scented crocus placed by a front door to encourage you into the cold outdoors. Happy gardening!

Flu Vaccinations for Children

Just a reminder to parents and carers that we now have plenty of stock of the nasal flu vaccination for children aged 2-4 (excluding children in Reception who will be immunised at school). It’s just a quick squirt up each nostril for children and will protect them against the really unpleasant effects of flu. Please book with reception now if you would like your child to have this vaccination.

Colds & Flu

It’s coming to that time of year again when coughs, colds, sneezing and sore throats are abundant. These are all the signs of the common cold. If you have any of the following symptoms raised temperature (3940c), sweating, overwhelming tiredness, chesty cough and sneezing these are signs that you may have flu.

Most healthy adults do not need to see a doctor for colds or flu. You should rest your body; drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids; ask your local pharmacist for advice AND remember antibiotics will not help colds, flu or sore throats. Children or adults with chronic health conditions, very high temperature or severe pain should seek medical advice. Quality Gifts That Won’t

Break the Bank

Building sets are popular with children and adults alike. They’re also a great way to spend some quality one-on-one time together. Keep an eye out for the K’Nex STEM Explorations range, which incorporates elements of science, technology, engineering and maths. The vehicles set (£24.99) includes pieces for seven different vehicles, two working motors and instructions for five experiments. LEGO is 85 years old this year. There are now literally hundreds of kits to choose from. The Lego Elves range centres on a girl called Emily Jones who finds her way to Elvendale. The range has been added to this year, with a new story focusing on Emily’s sister, Sophie, who is kidnapped by a goblin. Sets start at a few pounds and come with linked activities and videos online. The Capture of Sophie Jones kit (£17.99) proved a real hit with our eight year old tester and her dad. Wooden train sets make for hours of entertainment. Younger children can quickly become bored once the track is set up though. Hape’s new Rainbow Route Railway and Station Set (£59.45 from Amazon) is brightly coloured and has lots of extra features to keep kids amused. There’s a bead maze, tambourine track, shape sorter and minixylophone, and it’s suitable for toddlers aged 18 months and up.

• One movie night, complete with popcorn • Two hours of den building with Mum • A hot chocolate with whipped cream • One day of no chores • A pamper evening with face masks and a manicure • An extra hour to play before bed • An hour of playing the game of your choice with Mum and Dad • Baking cakes with grandparents

Gifts under £5

Most children enjoy reading or being read to. You’ll find plenty of books to choose from on The Book People’s website www. thebookpeople.co.uk, with up to 75% off RRP. When we checked there were 950 picture books for under £5, and thousands more across other age groups.

Gift experiences

When you look back on your childhood, you’ll probably remember days out with your family more than particular toys. Lots of child-friendly venues offer gift vouchers, including pottery barns, cinemas and amusement parks. Search online for local venues, or take a look at www.virginexperiencedays. co.uk and www.redletterdays.co.uk. Animal adoption gifts often include regular updates on the animal, along with magazines and a cuddly toy. Adopting a tiger through Born Free (www. bornfree.org.uk) costs just £2.50 a month. How about a personalised book of vouchers? Search for templates online, or design your own on www. canva.com then fill in the vouchers with activities that are free, or low-cost, such as:

If you enjoy making gifts, you could:

• Use scraps of felt to create a roll-up fuzzy felt game. • Fill a Kilner jar with the dry ingredients for chocolate chip cookies. • Make playdough (mix and heat on the hob 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of warm water, 1 cup of salt, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and a few drops of food colouring). Finally, when it comes to games and jigsaws for 2 to 7 year olds, you can’t go wrong with Orchard Toy, see www.orchardtoys.com. There are plenty of options for under £5, including Jungle Snakes and Ladders, Little Bug Bingo and Dinosaur Dominos.

MONEY MATTERS

What Firms Can Expect From Making Tax Digital The UK government’s pilot of the digitalised tax system ‘Making Tax Digital’ has now started. For many businesses preparing to move over to the digital side, there will be plenty of unanswered questions. Here’s what to expect from the tax reforms. In its 2015 spring Budget, the government announced its plans to modernise the current tax system, with a view to requiring non-incorporated business (including landlords and sole traders) to submit quarterly tax information to HMRC from April 2018. While the changes being introduced are designed to make tax affairs easier for businesses, it also presents the biggest shake up to the tax system for two decades. Making Tax Digital Timing Many felt the impact of digitising tax would hit small businesses hardest. The government responded in the 2017 Budget by allowing 3.1 million small businesses who operate below the VAT threshold one extra year to prepare themselves before they must submit digital tax records. Those unincorporated businesses with turnover greater than £85,000, under current plans will still need to comply from April 2018. So what should you be aware of for your business? Say goodbye to the annual tax return Efficiency was a key motivator for the government when changing how businesses supply tax records; scrapping annual tax returns for a quarterly update by businesses and a subsequent year end reconciliation. It could be argued this will create more work for businesses. However, advances in book keeping software should help ease the burden.

For any help with these issues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk As this concession has only recently been announced, software providers are under pressure to produce this software tool, calling on some in the accounting profession to delay the introduction of the new regime. Real-time tax updates One of the key advantages Making Tax Digital will bring, is that business owners will no longer have to wait until the end of the year to find out their tax liability. The digital tax system will collect and processes tax in real-time, reducing repayments and tax-due from accruing; something businesses will certainly welcome.

Introducing a centralised digital tax account Under Making Tax Digital, each business will have a digital tax account and, even if you’re exempt from the digitalised tax processes on introduction, it’s advisable to set up your digital account sooner rather than later. This will be a centralised HMRC system where you can view and update your tax information. Many have welcomed this as a tailored service for businesses.

Agent access Making Tax Digital will allow tax agents to access their clients’ data held by HMRC, when given permission to do so. The ‘all seeing’ approach will enable agents to give their clients greater clarity on their tax position for the year.

HMRC has also introduced a concession, to enable tax payers to continue to use spreadsheets for record keeping. This is a welcome allowance, but an additional software package would be required to make spreadsheets compliant with Making Tax Digital.

As so many of our services nowadays can be accessed digitally, it’s no surprise then that tax was next. Despite the initial outlay for every business to turn digital, the system should in theory make life simpler for book keepers. But for now, time will tell.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

What happens when a play comes to an end? Here at Ashby Venture Theatre our latest play ‘Journey’s End’ recently came to an end itself. Usually our set will be dismantled and our props returned back to our stores, however, this time they have got the chance to continue their journey serving a purpose for a local community project. Deana Wildgoose, the leader of the upcoming ‘Famous 50’ remembrance exhibition in Coalville couldn’t pass up a chance to see our production which tells the story of four soldiers anticipating a massive German attack on the British trenches in 1918. Our set recreated the typical environment soldiers would live in with tattered blankets, sandbags for pillows, tin mugs and wooden

78

crates for chairs. Instantly Deana knew our set and props would be perfect for her exhibition and after a discussion with our stage manager turned up on the Monday after our final production with two men and a van to collect it. The props will feature in a recreated WW1 trench designed and created by Ashby and Coalville school students. The exhibition will also feature poetry, poppy workshops and life size cutouts of soldiers. The Famous 50 Community exhibition will open at Coalville Market on November 11th (12pm -4pm); November 12th (12pm2pm) and run every Tuesday (9am-2pm), Friday and Saturday (8am- 4pm) thereafter.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Exercise your problems away! We are all aware that exercise has multiple benefits to our physical and mental health and wellbeing, with reduced risk of certain diseases, improved cardiovascular endurance, muscle growth and a lower resting heart rate. Exercise can benefit many medical conditions, speak to your GP before up taking any exercise programme but here are some medical conditions that may greatly improve from exercise.

Arthritis

The goals of exercising with arthritis are to: 1) preserve or restore range of motion and flexibility around affected joints, 2) increase muscle strength and endurance, and 3) increase aerobic conditioning to improve mood and decrease health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. In fact, exercise is considered the most effective non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement in patients with osteoarthritis.

Depression

Regular exercise can boost your mood. It is especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression. Exercise releases a chemical in the body called endorphins that interact with the brain to reduce the feeling of pain, they also trigger a positive feeling which is why some people call them the happy hormone.

Diabetes

People with diabetes are encouraged to exercise regularly to have better blood sugar control. Exercise helps the body to become more sensitive to insulin. By combining exercise with a healthy diet it can reduce the demand for insulin in the body which means it is actually possible to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Fibromyalgia

Exercising will benefit all of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain, fatigue, and sleep problems. It can help maintain bone mass, improve balance, reduce stress, and increase strength. Getting regular exercise can also help control your weight, which is important to reducing the pain of fibromyalgia. One of our members, Nina, had this to say “I have a few health issues including back degeneration and fybromaliga, both my GP and physiotherapist suggested that gentle exercise may help control the pain and immense fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. I was very sceptical and Nina thought his advice was mad as I could hardly walk from my car to the house without severe pain and discomfort.

Simon assured me he could offer me a safe and supportive programme and he would supervise and guide me every step of the way. We started off very slowly and worked together finding a workout that would suit me. Over the weeks I was able to do far more than I ever imagined possible and I am taking less pain killers, my mood improved and I’ve lost weight too! There are still days I feel better than others, but overall exercise has had a very positive effect on my life. I would encourage anyone in a similar position to give exercise a chance, small steps with good support can have a very positive impact on your life.”

Do you need a gym?

Any form of exercise is going to be beneficial, so if you like the outdoors or a certain sport, exercising in any way shape or form is going to be better than being inactive. Gyms can be very beneficial as you can have professional help on certain exercises and the instructors may have prior knowledge to your conditions and needs. Check out next month’s issue for details on our Boditrax and health checks available free here at Fitness Republic.

Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Seborrhoeic Keratosis

These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells. Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several centimetres across and sometimes they can become sore or itchy. On dark skinned people, the same growths can form in clusters or chains in which case they are called Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra.

Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make-up is rarely successful. At one time they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosmetic issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves little or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and soft.

Work is progressing well on the new premises in Harby, near Melton Mowbray. I hope to be taking appointments from the 23rd October. Please feel free to contact me or check the website for updates. Many thanks. Apologies for any inconvenience.

BOOK REVIEWS

Gift Inspiration

Books make great gifts. If you’re stuck for inspiration or looking for some ideas for your own Christmas wish list, check out this month’s recommendations. For fans of Sarah Waters and Susanna Clarke:

The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock Imogen Hermes Gowar The year is 1785 and widower John Hancock finds himself the owner of what appears to be a dead mermaid. The artefact proves the talk of the town and gains John access to a whole new circle of society, a society that includes the alluring courtesan, Angelica Neal. 18th century London is brought vividly to life in this enchanting debut novel.

Love a good psychological thriller? Add this to your wish list:

The Stolen Child Sanjida Kay Without giving too much away, The Stolen Child centres around Zoe, Ollie and their daughter, Evie. Evie was adopted by the couple from birth, but starts to receive letters and gifts from a man claiming to be her father. A man who says he wants her back. Full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Enjoyed The Rosie Project and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time? Try…

The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr Frances Maynard Elvira doesn’t see the world in quite the same way as most people. As a result, she lives a fairly sheltered life, caring for her overbearing mother and indulging her interest in biscuits. But then her mother has a stroke and Elvira has to find her own way in the world. With a great storyline, well-rounded characters and plenty of humour to boot, Frances Maynard’s debut novel is a triumph.

Love dystopian fiction such as The Hunger Games and Divergent? Try…

The Gender Game Bella Forrest In Violet Bates’s world, women rule. Men have few rights and boys can be sent away if they’re deemed capable of aggression. Across the river it’s another story – in Patrus men have the power. Violet is serving time in a detention facility when she’s offered the chance to have her slate wiped clean, in return for completing a mission in Patrus. An enjoyable, easy read.

If you like Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman, try…

Hannah Green and Her Unfeasibly Mundane Existence Michael Marshall Smith Eleven year old Hannah Green finds the world isn’t quite as mundane as she thought, when it turns out her grandfather is in league with the devil. The world is out of kilter, and the unlikely trio have to work together to put things right. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great descriptions, bags of humour and believable characters.

Fans of The Great British Bake Off will be clamouring for this one…

Nadiya’s British Food Adventure Nadiya Hussain As Nadiya says, British food today is a melting pot of cuisines from different cultures. This book reflects that, with twists to classic British dishes and more modern favourites. The book ties in with Nadiya’s latest TV series, so includes several of the dishes featured on the show. You’ll find recipes such as Minted Lamb and Apple Pasties, Mango and Passionfruit Jam Roly Poly and Masala Eggy Bread. Recipes are simple to follow, with attractive photographs and engaging introductions.

PET’S CORNER

How to care for your pet in the With colder weather now upon us, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll take care of your pet to minimise illness and make sure they’re safe. So what areas should you be thinking about?

Paws

Although dogs’ paws may be more at risk of damage from frost and icy conditions when they go for walks and runs, other animals also experience pain in this area. They can suffer from cracked paws, and pick up salt deposits, which if ingested could cause stomach issues and illness. • Check paws for build-up of snow or ice between the pads – wipe with a warm washcloth and dry well, checking for cracks or irritation, and keep fur between the pads clipped short. Your vet may be able to recommend balm or ointment/oil to soothe their paws.

Arthritis

If your pet suffers from arthritis, they’ll stiffen

colder weather

up in the cold weather and may find it difficult to walk. • Provide a heated mat in their bed – cosy sheepskin or fleece mats bring relief from arthritis, allowing your pet to enjoy the rest they need.

Older animals

Older pets can suffer more at this time of year, even if they don’t have arthritis. They’ll be less flexible generally, and potentially more susceptible to picking up germs. • Make sure they exercise enough – carry on taking your dog out for regular walks, taking into account the wintery conditions. Take advantage of a break in the weather if you can, an nd choose your route carefully.

BOARD GAMES

Board Games have come out of the cupboard! 2017 marks the third year of The Big Christmas Board Games Day and the popularity of new generation board games continues to soar. This is remarkable in a world where computer games are becoming more and more immersive, but there definitely seems to be a social benefit in being at a table with your friends and family, live and in-person. Board games have hugely varied themes and complexities so there is something for everyone and all ages. The tactile nature and beautiful design of many of these games also adds to the experience. Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people. YOU WILL NEED l

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

IN THIS WORLD NOTHING IS CERTAIN BUT DEATH AND TAXES  PART 2

In the second part of our two-part article on estate planning we will take a brief look at some of the structures that allow us to reduce inheritance tax, or ‘IHT’ on an estate. In a short article, we can only briefly touch on each topic and with each there are many intricacies to be considered. Only individual advice can establish if something is appropriate to you. Inheritance tax is a one-off tax paid on the value of an estate (i.e. your assets) over £325,000, the current ‘nil-rate band’. The Net estate, after deducting exemptions, reliefs and nil-rate band is taxed at 40% (or 36%, if 10% or more of your net estate is left to charity). 1. Trusts: Bare, discretionary, flexible interests – although there are complex rules surrounding the use of trust, they remain a useful tool in helping pass wealth down the generations. Early use, as well as in a Will can help reduce the tax burden. They can also exert some control over how assets are used. Trust can be administered by families with appropriate advice and are particularly useful to blended families where many interests need to be fairly served. 2. Pensions – Under new pension freedom rules, most pensions are now able to be part of your legacy (to a spouse, children and beyond). Reviews on pensions established before 2015 are

essential to ensure that the new rules can be applied to your pension pot. Contracts before this time may not offer the facilities that new contracts offer. Pensions can offer a legacy that is limited only by the size of the pension pot* that is potentially outside of the inheritance tax regime. * The pension lifetime allowance and any potential subsequent charge if the lifetime allowance is breached may affect the amount that is inherited.

3. Life Assurance – taking out whole of life cover and excluding this from your estate by using a trust, can allow you to provide a lump sum to pay for any IHT that is due. It can help reduce the assessable estate and ensure funds are available and ‘liquid’ when the bill arrives. Nothing costs more than acting in error and estate planning remains a topic that is full of myths and mistakes. Advice from a qualified adviser can save your family much more than it costs. If you would like to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss your estate planning or to look at any other financial needs, please contact Ian Staley Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Planners Limited on 01530 567020.

CHESS PUZZLE

Whi hitittee too pla lay ay and win

Henry Edward Bird (1830 – 1908) learned to play chess at the age of 10 by watching players at Raymonds Coffee House in London. By age 16 Bird was a leading British amateur. Although an accountant by profession, his games show much imagination. In this game played in London in 1857 he finishes off Adolf Anderssen (1818 – 1879 ) with a devastating attack. Note that White must play the exact right moves to win. Discover your genius at chess by coming to our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Absolute beginners are very welcome. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
