COMPETITION TIME

Win a family ticket

to this year’s Ashby Show!!!! The Ashby Show at Cattows Farm in Heather is a key summer event for NW Leicestershire with crowds of thousands attending each year. The 2017 show on Sunday 9th July promises to offer as much entertainment, excitement and shopping as we have all come to expect. Back again by popular demand are the Bolddog Lings Motorcycle Display Team. Make sure you don’t miss these top-ranked freestyle motor-cross riders perform their amazing, heart-stopping tricks. Show times are 12.45pm and 4pm. Between displays you can meet the riders and get a closer look at the bikes. With livestock show classes for some of the best cattle, sheep and horses in the country, this traditional agricultural show links town and country. You can sample the region’s best food in the popular British Farm Produce marquee, see how farming has progressed through the years with the brilliant display of old vintage tractors and marvel at the massive machines used in farming today. The Greyfriars Accumulator Show Jumping class will bring the country’s best show jumpers along to compete for the £500 top prize. Competitors will race against the clock building up points for each jump they clear. If shopping is more your thing, then this is the place for you with over 200 trade exhibitors selling everything from the latest fashions, handbags, jewellery or something for the garden. Children will be entertained throughout the day by Punch & Judy, Stilt Walkers, Bouncy Castles and Go

Carts. Teenagers can have fun on the Bucking Bronco and see who can stay on the longest. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads. Enter them in a class or two in the Fun Dog Show and perhaps go home with a rosette. There are plenty of tasty food outlets offering a wide range of meals and a beer tent for when you’ve earned a drink! The main sponsors of the show are local farmers, Livesey Bros from Packington, who grow exotic mushrooms and breed top class Hereford cattle. LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS

Massey’s celebrate their 70th birthday!! Massey’s DIY store in Swadlincote is celebrating 70 years in business this month so we thought it was the perfect time to share more of it’s history…… Founder; Reginald Massey was a painter and decorator and was repeatedly asked for small quantities of paint which, at the time, couldn’t be purchased. He began decanting paint into old treacle tins to sell and as a result, Masseys was born, with the initial store being founded in 1947 by Reg and his son, Brian on Swadlincote Road. During the 1970s, Brian’s two sons, Peter and Robert, joined the company. By 1987 it had outgrown the high street shop and so a new purpose built store was erected at 29 Swadlincote Road. Sadly, Brian passed away a few years later, but Peter and Robert continued to expand the business. In 2012 it was again necessary to expand the store’s footprint. Peter’s son, Andrew, joined the business along with Robert’s daughter Jacqui and after two years of planning and building, the current store opened in Spring 2014.

Masseys has been in Swadlincote since 1947 and prides itself on offering customers expert advice, product support and a great environment in which to shop. With the growth of the internet, prices have remained competitive in addition to a complete shopping experience that now features a cafe. As well as admiring the artwork on buildings around town forming the ever popular outdoor gallery be sure to enjoy some of the many workshops and activities scheduled over the week. The event is a true credit to the town. See www.ashbyartsfestival.co.uk for details.

vehicles will fill the streets along with food and entertainment stalls.

March saw the return of the hugely successful Ashby 20 Road Race as over 1,300 runners took to the streets with overwhelming local support from over 250 people offering refreshments, medical support and traffic control. The first ever Ashby 20 children’s race also launched on the Bath Grounds. Together they raised an amazing £3,800 for Leicestershire Search and Rescue, Endurance Explorer Scouts and the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle.

Designs for the Cultural & Leisure Quarter are being finalised and plans for marketing, sponsorship and branding for the town are under development by the Marketing & Communications task team.

In April, the Italian Market on Brook Street had a fabulous turn out and the organisers are keen to return and make this an annual event.

The first meeting was held to discuss the launch of a Blackfordby Neighbourhood Plan and next steps to register it agreed.

Throughout the summer we can look forward to a number of town events – make sure they are in your diary so you don’t miss them.

The new Mayor of Ashby was elected on 15th May and in next month’s issue we will bring you more details on who they are and how they plan to carry out their new role.

On Saturday 3rd June the Ashby Fake Festival will take over the Bath Grounds for a day of top music including headline tribute acts of Oasis, Guns N’ Roses and Green Day as well as five local support bands. The brand new Ashby Festival of Transport takes place on Sunday 2nd July on Market Street, Brook Street and the Bath Grounds. Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Seborrhoeic Keratosis

These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells. Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several centimetres across and sometimes they can become sore or itchy. On dark skinned people, the same growths can form in clusters or chains in which case they are called Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra.

Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make-up is rarely successful. At one time they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosmetic issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves little or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and soft.

This is an inexpensive, quick and safe procedure

THE PROBLEM WITH CASH ISAs When interest rates fell to a historic low of 0.5% in March 2009, who would have guessed that eight years later not only would they still be at such an incredible low level, but they would have fallen even further to the current all-time low of just 0.25%? This level of interest is great news for borrowers, but the consequence is the negative impact on the level of interest rates available on your savings and Cash ISAs. To counter this problem, some people have taken out fixed interest rate deals over the years to increase the returns paid on their Cash ISAs, but it is only when these deals mature that the reality sinks in and they realise just how low interest rates have fallen. Fixed rate Cash ISAs are no longer offering the headlines rates of 3% - 5% per annum; most current ‘deals’ are offering much more modest

rates in the region of just 1% p.a. for instant access accounts, and around 1.50% - 1.75% p.a. if you are willing to tie your money up for the next 5 years (source: MoneyFacts April 2017). With the latest inflation announcement in March showing that inflation is currently running at 2.30%, the only certainty is that your savings will lose value in real terms. So, what can you do? Having a chat with a suitably qualified local IFA might be a good idea. They can help you review your existing savings and Cash ISAs, and explain your options in a clear, concise language to help you get the most out of your savings in the future. So, what are you waiting for? Please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation.

FITNESS TIPS

From one dad to another…...

The Dad Bod! You may have come across the term ‘Dad Bod’ in many fitness articles, particularly on social media, but what does it really mean?

Well, this has been a real talking point lately with many famous people in the spotlight. Essentially, the dad bod is a kind of physique that you may have if you attended the gym occasionally, amongst drinking heavily at the weekend, with a few slices of pizza thrown in for good measure! So not massively overweight, but no washboard abs to speak of either. So, a bit of muscle with a bit of a beer belly!

Is your Dad Bod really that bad?

Well, the Dad Bod can have some serious health issues. With being overweight you can increase the risk of some cancers, abdominal fat can be a big contributor to heart disease, diabetes and depression to name but a few.

So, what to do about it!

Now speaking as a father, working out like an athlete is going to be real hard, with endless ‘daddy’, school pick-ups, dinner time demands and being a general taxi service to the kids! 26

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Show your kids how it’s done!

So, let’s get realistic. First point to tackle is the weekends, trying to nail down better eating and drinking habits. I’m not saying to cut everything out but cutting down would be a great start. Preplanning what to eat at the weekends is going to be a massive help, especially if takeaways are a usual occurrence! You can easily make your own pizza, chinese or indian, with healthy ingredients, maybe get the kids involved too, I know mine love to create their own pizza! So, to the body. The upper body is the focus here, and primarily the shoulders and moobs (man boobs!). Building the shoulders and shaping the chest is going to add massively to your physique. For Chest I recommend: Bench Press, Incline Dumbell Fly, Decline Dumbell Press and Press-ups. For Shoulders I recommend: Barbell Press, Lateral Raises & Front raises. You can perform these exercises either at the gym, which is recommended or even at home.

To Conclude All in all your body should be something to be proud of and that cannot be measured by anyone but yourself. My advice is just my opinion as I like to be proud of my physique as it makes me feel happy and confident. I can assure you though that the feeling of being in shape and being happy with your body is amazing and translates to many other areas of your life, plus it is a brilliant example to our kids, as we are their teachers and role models. Helping them to develop healthy habits and exercise regimes early in life helps them to stick with it as they get older, and this can never be a bad thing! If any of you dads need any more advice or help, then don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Online Crime Reporting Online crime reporting has launched in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, giving residents the ability to report incidents online. Online reporting aims to increase the number of ways the public can make contact with the force and to give people the chance to report crimes to us at their convenience in a way they feel comfortable with. Inspector Aimee Ramm is one of the officers working to launch online reporting. She said: “Many people do a lot of things online now – banking, shopping and booking holidays – which were traditionally done over the phone or in person, and we want to make that shift to offering an online service too.” Reports will be managed by officers working in the Investigation Management Unit (IMU), and actioned as they come in. Detective Inspector Mark Ringrose heads up the IMU. He said: “As a force – like many forces across the country – we

are very phone centred with almost all crimes we deal with called in to the control room. With a digital shift to online, being able to report non-emergency crimes by sending an email is an appealing prospect for some members of the public.” Online reporting is to be used for non-emergency crimes only – things that traditionally the 101 number would be used for. For any emergency, or for the reporting of a crime in action, always dial 999. PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

OPEN GARDENS

Ashby de la Zouch

Open Gardens Weekend

Launched in 2008 with just two gardens raising money for Cancer Research UK, Ashby Open Gardens has certainly grown from strength to strength in the years that have followed and on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June this year will have at least 13 beautiful gardens across Ashby open to visitors. Last year’s event broke all previous records and nearly 600 visitors helped to raise £2,800 in aid of the Air Ambulance Service and Hospice Hope. It is hoped that can be exceeded this summer. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your own garden or simply enjoy a stroll around these charming displays, you’ll get to see a vast array of stunning and

unusual plants in glorious locations. There will also be plants for sale and scrumptious cakes to enjoy. Details of the gardens are on the website: www. ashbyopengardens.co.uk and on the ‘Passport’ that will be required to access the gardens. The ‘Passport’ costs £4 per adult (accompanied under 16’s free) and covers all gardens for both days. They are available on the day from any garden, or in advance from North’s Deli, La Zouch restaurant or Ashby tourist information. Profits from this year’s event will again be donated to the Air Ambulance Service and Hospice Hope. The gardens will be open both days (10th & 11th June) from 11am to 6pm. SPOTLIGHT ON...

Charity Link

Join the team making strides to help local people in poverty Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity as we tell you more about the invaluable work they do and how you can become involved and offer support. If you’re looking for a fun yet demanding way to help a local good cause then we have the perfect solution…. Charity Link, a charity which supports people in poverty, hardship or crisis throughout Leicestershire, is looking for individuals and teams of friends, family or work colleagues to join it for its ‘Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge’ on Sunday 24th September 2017. The charity, which has been providing essential items, including food, clothing and beds to local people for over 140 years, has devised a unique 16 mile route which takes in the two highest peaks in Leicestershire - Bardon Hill and Beacon Hill. The third ‘peak’ is that of Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, where the challenge starts and finishes. The challenge was launched by the charity in 2016 with 40 challengers taking part. After a successful inaugural event the charity hopes to double the number of participants this year. Challengers can choose to walk with the main group (the target is around seven hours) or for those looking for an extra challenge, runners are welcome to see if

they can beat the Charity Link Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge record. There is a welcome pit stop at Bawdon Lodge Farm, Nanpanton, and other support around the route. Registration costs £15 and challengers also raise extra funds. Due to the unique way in which Charity Link works, for every £10 raised it can provide £50 worth of essential items – so by taking part you really will be helping to improve the lives of the most vulnerable local people. To find out all the details visit and to register visit www.charity-link.org/leics3peaks. Charity Link also runs a range of other events and challenges throughout the year: Why not take part in Charity Link’s annual Golf Day at Beedles Lake Golf Course near East Goscote in Leicestershire on Friday 6th October or join the Charity Link team in running the Leicester half / marathon on Saturday 15th October. There are so many ways to help raise funds whilst having fun with friends and family or with work colleagues - just get in touch to talk through any ideas you have. INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

2017 key trend alert:

Travel-inspired trends

With warmer weather on the way, many of us are thinking about our summer holidays. So, let us use this as our inspiration to search out beautiful designs for your home. Many of the best interior designs draw inspiration from the four corners of the globe. Through travelling, we are able to experience different climates, culture and traditions. The exotic ‘Intrepid Explorer’ trend will be huge in 2017, bringing a sense of adventure into our homes to escape our chaotic urban lifestyles. The focus will be heavily traditional handicrafts, with a huge focus on the use of recycled materials such as wood, rattan, glass and textured fabrics. This theme allows you to create an eclectic display of sculpture, photos and treasured collections from your travels. To achieve an authentic look, try and stick with an earthy warm colour palette, such as terracotta, warm ochre and the natural tones. The focus is to let the furniture and soft furnishing do their work whilst the

Interior tips with FABCO in-store designer Eddie Ong colour scheme complements the whole design. When sourcing furniture items, look out for items made from ethically sourced, organic or recycled materials. Tribal print cushions and a pouffe, mixed with a textured sea grass, Kilim or oriental rug will instantly provide some key ingredients to this delicious look. Why not create your own large patchwork floor cushions using old fabrics and dress your room with different size lanterns, coloured glass bottles, and exotic house plants, such as cactus and ornaments from your travels? Finally, complete the design with some picture frames with photos from your holidays!

From beautiful, hand-carved French style bed frames to elegant and timeless upholstered beds, FABCO offer their customers great choices, quality and value for money. There are many quality beds, mattresses and beautiful headboards to choose from. Fabco’s ‘Sealy Studio’ has many of Sealy’s top models on display for you to try out. There’s also Luxury British Handmade beds from Relyon and Somnus and many more at their Ashby showroom. Once you walk through the showroom doors you’ll feel at ease, as their aim is to be on hand to answer any questions you may have; but there’s definitely a ‘no-hassle’ policy in force and reassuringly no high pressure sales. The delivery of your bed is easy peasy too: their Premier Delivery service includes, assembly of your new bed and removal of the packaging, for recycling or re-use. Why not visit FABCO Ashby’s biggest bed showroom and try all the latest bed and mattress collections for yourself? They are open 7-days a week and are located next to Aldi, opposite Pets at Home and Wickes.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

June Museum News The Museum was delighted to welcome nearly 300 pupils and their staff from Littleover School, Derby. They seemed to enjoy and learn much from the illustrated talks we gave, which neatly complemented their visit to Ashby castle. We have just received from Vertigo, a supplier of museum exhibition material, a showcase which contains a collection of local traders’ tokens. These date from the mid-17th century to Co-Op tokens of the 1950s. The display has now been placed in the Zouche Gallery. Lesley Hextall’s photographic display in the Loudoun Gallery was deservedly well-received. The next temporary exhibition in June and July is entitled ‘The Past and Material Culture’ – a glimpse into the past through local archaeology. Our summer programme of evening town history walks begins on Wednesday June 7th. These are always very popular so it is advisable to book a place. Call in at the museum or telephone 01530 560090. Come and stroll round with our guides and learn more about Ashby’s fascinating history.

The cost is £4 and we leave from the museum at 7 p.m. The new edition of ‘Ashby Past and Present’ is also on sale in June. More details in the next issue. Friends of Ashby Museum Martin Vaughan’s talk on Wednesday 17th May, on local wildlife photography, was well attended. Look out for details of our next talk on Tollgate Brewery in September.

BODY MATTERS

What are

Sinuses?

Our sinuses are hollow cavities within our facial bones. They are lined with tissue called mucosa. We have 4 main sinuses on each side of the face. Frontal, Ethmoid, Maxillary and Sphenoid. Each sinus is connected to the nasal passage by a channel. Normal healthy sinuses have a constant flow of air into the sinuses and production of mucous which travels through and drains into the nasal passages. What is sinusitis Sinusitis occurs when there is a blockage of one of these channels that drains the sinus. This can be due to: structural reasons; such as a deviated septum or narrow passages swollen mucosal tissue. The causes of such swelling include:

What is the treatment for sinusitis? Sinusitis can be acute (short lived) or chronic (more than 12 weeks). If it is acute the symptoms disappear completely. If it is chronic the symptoms linger. The main aim of treatment is to reduce the swelling. It may involve saline nasal washes, decongestants, antibiotics, antihistamines, allergy testing, or surgery to remove the blockage and widen the drainage channels Can osteopaths help the symptoms of chronic sinusitis? By working on your head neck and rib cage osteopaths can help unblock the nasal passages and drain the sinuses. In chronic sinusitis, this can help ease the symptoms of congestion and facial pain. Osteopathic treatment is not a cure for viral, bacterial or fungal infections. However, it can help reduce the pain and congestion of sinusitis. As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition.

AMTG NEWS

Oliver becomes one of the “Children of the New Forest”! Here at the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group we always say that young people are the life blood of our group, and that is true of all that appeared in our latest triumphant production of Oliver! in April. It is with immense pride that we can report one of our Olivers, Liv Carroll-Walsh, who is a pupil at Derby High School, has been chosen to join the Youth Music Theatre Company of 2017. Liv will be performing in the musical adaptation of Frederick Marryat’s “Children of the New Forest” in August 2017 at The Barbican Theatre in Plymouth. After Liv’s three hour audition at the Birmingham Hippodrome, YMT offered her a place saying “Congratulations on scoring so highly in your audition, although our casting process takes into account much more than just your ability to sing a note or learn a piece of choreography. To be offered a place on Children of the New Forest – YMT’s under-16s project for 2017 – means that you impressed us with a particular sense of maturity

and leadership ahead of your age, as well as your vocal and physical skills”. Liv will attend a 2-week residential summer school in Plymouth where she will work with professionals who have been involved in a wealth of musical theatre projects, and she will then appear in the production at The Barbican. AMTG wish Liv a most enjoyable time with YMT and we are very proud of her. It goes without saying that her parents Emma and Dave and all their family are over the moon about Liv’s forthcoming experience!

PET’S CORNER

Help your dog to be

fit and healthy

As we all know, it’s very easy to put on weight during the winter without even realising it. The same applies to your dog, who might currently be displaying a larger than expected stomach - but it’s easy to help them lose weight and become fitter. It’s not always obvious that your dog is gaining weight though, so it’s a good idea to have regular checks using your vet’s scales. Taking photos of your dog every few weeks during the whole year will also reveal any additional poundage. So what else can you do to help them shed their excess weight during the longer days of summer? Not just walks Variety is the key to faster weight loss, and incorporating play into their exercise regime will work wonders. You can build a home-made agility course using large boxes and tubes, or buy the ready-made versions from pet stores and supermarkets. Hide and seek, or playing ball

games on the beach will also be well received. Portion control Exercise plus careful control over how much your dog eats is a powerful combination for losing weight. It’s so easy to lose track of their food intake during a day, but choose a good quality food that will be easily digested. Help from your vet Most vets run weight-loss clinics which are useful if you also have any health concerns about your dog. The vet can offer valuable advice, and make sure you’re giving them the correct food.

onto the canal towpath - this is marked by a smart black signpost. Turn left along the towpath to go back under the bridge, following the marker post in the direction of Congerstone. The path will briefly le ead you away from th he waterside as it go oes up to cross a new w bridge by Bosworth Maarina. After the bridge yo ou dro op back down and will now be walking alongside the e canal all the way until you arrive at Shackersttone. Canal bridges are all numbered - your start point was bridge 42 and you will remain on th he towpath h until you reach brid dge 52. At bridge 44 look out forr the sig gn about the Ashby Canal Site of Special Scientific Interestt which tells you about some of the e plant and animaal life in the area. There are several benches en rou ute which appear to have been donated by members of the Ashby Canal Society (many thanks to them, it’s a great idea) - bridges 46 or 47 are co onvenient spots for a break around the half-way mark. The sign by bridge 49 is a good er of the challenges faced by those living and d reminde working on the canal in years gone by (and still todaay, I guess!) - it made me smile, as did the floating g fuel station moored shortly before bridge 52.

4

When you reach bridge 52 the towpath will lead you up to the bridge as the path swaps to the other side of the canal here. Turn right over the bridge but instead of rejoining the towpath on the other side turn right again into the driveway that leads down to Shackerstone lk - now it iis time ti Station. This is the end of your walk to relax, and perhaps enjoy some refreshments, browse the gift shop or take a few pictures, before catching the train back to Market Bosworth station.

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Would you vote for this person? People who run for political office (local, national or even international) make all sorts of promises. Like “If you vote for me or my party then we’ll solve this problem or improve this service”. We hear and read about them all the time and no doubt many of these promises are made with the best of intentions. But how often are they kept? Imagine you had the chance to vote for someone who could solve all problems; not just of this country, but of the entire world. Someone with the power and integrity to end war and violence to bring lasting peace. Someone who could cure all diseases and end suffering. A candidate who you knew you could trust to feed the hungry, free the oppressed, and eradicate poverty. We guess you’d vote for such a person? Well, why wouldn’t you? Interestingly, the Bible tells us that just such a ruler exists – Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is going to

return to this earth and put right all the wrongs we see around us. Although he doesn’t need your vote in an election, he does invite all who want such things to become his followers and try to live in a way that God wants us to. Sound interesting? Don’t just take our word for it – read the Bible and see why followers of Jesus firmly believe they have a leader who they know they can trust. Not someone caught up in scandal or sleaze, speculation or spin – Jesus will rule with truth and justice. Completely different from any political leader, from any party, in any country. You don’t have to wait for another election, you can vote with your heart and mind today. Useful Bible passage to look up: Psalm 72 vs 6-8 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Canine Partners Canine Partners are a wonderful local charity who we have featured in the magazine many times before. Their work in transforming the lives of people living with disabilities by partnering them with trained assistance dogs is invaluable to the community and amazing to see. This month I got to visit the local Canine Partners training centre in Osgathorpe and meet one of the dogs and trainers to understand a bit more about the Weekend Fostering programme they run. At around 14 months of age the dogs enter their advanced training programme which runs for 15 weeks. Having just left their puppy parents these budding assistance dogs spend their whole week learning and need loving weekend foster homes to allow them time to relax, sleep and have fun. Put simply it’s about time for the dog to enjoy being a pet – lots of love and cuddles and for the foster parents to enjoy the dog. The foster parent role may be temporary but the long term effect is immeasurable. Weekend foster parents are asked to make a 15 weekend commitment, taking the dog in to their home from Friday teatime through to Monday morning and will need to live within a 15mile radius of Osgathorpe. If you live close to the training centre then the dog you foster can potentially stay with you every evening and simply be dropped off each day for training. During the weekend, it will be essential for the dog to follow their usual routines as regards being fed and

toileted but guidance and advice is readily given by the trainers. At the end of each weekend the foster family are asked to fill out a short ‘school report’ giving feedback on how the dog is coping in a home environment. If you’re considering fostering you’re likely to have lots of questions. On the first Thursday of each month Canine Partners runs a 2 hour session for those interested. It’s a chance for people to visit the site, meet the dogs and the trainers and understand more about the fostering process. Once signed up a home check will be carried out to ensure all is suitable for the dog and then it’s a case of waiting for the right dog and the right home to be matched up. Fosterers are really well supported by Canine Partners at every stage. The scheme is flexible and made to work both for the fosterers and the dogs. Fosterers get training one on one as well as in group sessions and are provided with all the dog needs such as bedding, food, bowls and toys. All they ask the fosterers to give is their time and love to the dog. Fostering a Canine Partners dog offers you the chance to enjoy your weekends with a dog without the lifetime commitment of a pet, you get to meet and spend time with these wonderful animals and know that you are playing a vital role in transforming the life of someone with a disability.

Local Teacher Wins Prestigious

National Photography Awards

Local teacher, Fiona Millington Pipe, has now been recognised both nationally and internationally for her skills as a photographer. Wife and busy mum of two, 38-year-old Fiona is Head of Junior School at Manor House School and she also runs a successful photography business from her home in Ashby de la Zouch. Recently, Fiona won three awards for photographs submitted to the prestigious ‘Image of the Month’ competition. The awarding body is The Guild of Photographers, an internationally accredited UK trade association with a reputation for excellence. Naturally, Fiona was delighted by the news. “Commercially, I have had images accepted by Arcangel, publishers in London and Paris, but I was particularly pleased to get recognition from the Guild. The judging is very tough so winning a silver and two bronzes in January and going on to win a further six bronzes in February and March represents a real achievement.” Very much an active member of the local community, Fiona is the daughter of policeman, Mervyn Wass. Mervyn was a local beat officer in town for many years before his retirement. Fiona’s mother has worked tirelessly for a local charity “The shuttlewood Clarke

foundation” for years and her grandparents and great-grandparents owned Mill Farm in Ashby until 2005. Fiona’s twin sister runs the busy hairdressing business, Tip Top Hair Design, in the Ferrers Centre, former stables in the grounds of the Staunton Harold Estate. Fiona and sister, Jacqui, regularly collaborate on creative photo shoots, especially those which involve vintage or retro styling because this is one of Jacqui’s specialisms. She has been asked previously to style hair at Goodwood Festival and Fiona feels very fortunate to have a sister with this creative talent. Although Fiona is best known for her delightful family portraits, the silver and bronze awards recognise her creativity as a photographer and her ability to coordinate all the various professionals needed on a shoot. The winning images, of model Kate Laura from the ‘Ice Queen’ series and a headshot of fashion model Georgia Annable, really demonstrate her versatility.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

Introducing our president...

As our 2016/17 season of plays comes to an end, we decided to feature our President, Margaret Holdich-Monk.

Margaret will be a familiar face to you if you come to our plays, even if you have never met her, as her face appears on the first page of all our programmes. Margaret joined Ashby Dramatic Society in 1960 or 61, before the Venture Theatre came into existence. In those days the Society met in a room above Shellbrook toy shop but soon after that they began to rent a room in the Lamb Inn Yard which they eventually bought. There the group met, rehearsed and made all the scenery before putting on plays in the Town Hall. In those days, Margaret herself appeared on stage and all the plays were directed by the Society founder Len Matthews. All the other members were expected to “muck in” and help with everything else from painting the scenery to sorting the costumes. It was only a small group in those days, but they still managed to put on four plays a year.

In the 1970s, the Society bought St Helen’s Parish Rooms and converted the building into a proper theatre. Money was very tight and the Society worked hard at fundraising; on one occasion they even raffled a car!

Nowadays, Margaret sits on the Management Committee as President, d writes her address for the programmes and always enjoys taking up her seat in Row G at every production. Our plays begin again in September and we’ll be telling you more of the plays in next month’s issue. Ashby Dramatic Society welcomes potential new members. Join them at Club Night on any Monday evening from 8pm and perhaps help them achieve another 300 successful and sparkling productions.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Wonderful Wisteria I am sure you will have noticed this beautiful flowering plant in the last few weeks over walls and pretty houses making a chocolate box scene of towns and villages. The flowering season is from April to June. The abundant white/purple/blue/ pink flowers hang magnificently giving off a heady sweet scent. These Wisteria in our gardens are either from China (Wisteria sinensis), or Japan (Wisteria floribunda). There is also a Native American variety but it is not as good as the Asian varieties and so it is not grown often. Despite its delicate beauty it is of course hardy, and as well as having interesting twining of stems in winter it has a lovely fresh green leaf every spring. Wisteria sinensis flowers before the leaves appear and the stems twine anticlockwise, whereas Wisteria floribunda has the leaves and flowers at the same time and the stems twist in a clockwise direction. Not only can this beautiful plant be grown as a climber across walls and over pergolas, it can be grown in a pot as a freestanding standard tree, with the help of a supportive frame. This is a great way of enjoying the benefits of Wisteria in a confined space. In fact, the finest example of Wisteria grown as a tree that I have seen is in the compact grounds of St Giles Church in central Norwich.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 Wisteria will do very well on a sunny wall, but will tolerate some light shade. It is a deciduous climber which can spread in excess of 30 meters wide and 10 meters high. Your plant will require careful and regular pruning. Pruning is not complicated but just requires shortening new growth in July /August and also in January/ February. In summer all the pruning required is to cut back the new whippy growth to five or six leaves. This will control the size of the plant and stop it climbing into guttering and roofs. The winter pruning is just cutting back to two or tree buds to tidy the plant up whilst it is dormant. This twice yearly maintenance will improve the flower display. Take care not to prune in early or mid summer or you will reduce the flowering in the following year. Also remember to water in very dry spells as an especially dry summer may give fewer flowers the next year. In spring, Wisteria benefits from feeding with Growmore or Fish Blood and Bone, or a liquid tomato feed will do them good. Many Wisterias have the RHS award for garden merit and these are the most popular varieties: Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Shiro-kapitan’ which is white flowering. Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Showa-beni’ which is pink flowering. W ‘Burford’, which has lilac blue flowers on very long racemes of about 90cm. Wisteria ‘Caroline’, has blue/purple flowers. Happy gardening!

Inspirational Stories Tales of wartime, refugees and hardships overcome.

Behold the Dreamers Imbolo Mbue Jende and Neni are firm believers in the American dream and know they can achieve a better life for themselves and their son. Jende works long hours as a chauffeur for the wealthy Clark Edwards and his family, while Neni does care work and studies to be a pharmacist. Then Jende is told his application for a green card has been rejected. As cracks also start appearing in the Edwards family’s lives, it seems the American dream may not be all Jende and Neni hoped for. Alone on a Wide Wide Sea Michael Morpurgo Six year old Arthur is shipped off to Australia in 1947. He’s put to work on a farm and treated as little more than an unpaid servant. All he has left of his life in England is his lucky key, and memories of the big sister who stayed behind. Years later, Arthur builds a boat for his daughter Allie, to take her back to England and find his sister. A powerful story of what it means to be a family, Alone on a Wide Wide Sea is 10 years old this year. Why not lose yourself in Arthur’s story this summer? The Girl Who Beat ISIS Farida Khalaf and Andrea C. Hoffmann ISIS kidnapped Farida Khalaf from her Northern Iraqi village in 2014. Beaten, raped and sold as a slave, the teenage Farida refused to bow down to her captors or to convert to their religion. After numerous attempts, and nearly being beaten to death, Farida eventually escaped with five other girls. Having been granted asylum in Germany, this is her harrowing tale as told to Andrea C. Hoffmann.

The Nightingale Kristin Hannah Two sisters in France at the start of World War II. One wants to keep her head down, wait for her husband to come home and keep her daughter safe. The other plans to do everything in her power to fight the enemy. Each will end up making her own contribution, resisting the Nazis and saving lives. As much a tale of sisters as it is of war, this is a truly powerful read that will haunt you for days afterwards. The Girl with Seven Names Hyeonseo Lee Hyeonseo Lee gives us a glimpse into life in secretive and oppressive North Korea. She was raised in a country where the slightest sign of resistance against the government is punishable by torture or death. At 17, Hyeonseo fled to China, leaving behind her family, and wasn’t able to see them again for 12 years. She is now an advocate for refugees and speaks out about the plight of the people who still live in fear in North Korea. Her TED talk has been viewed 4 million times, by people across the world. Goodnight Mister Tom Michelle Magorian This classic tale tells the story of a cantankerous old man who takes in an evacuee in World War II Britain. Tom Oakley is gruff, reclusive and still grieving for the wife and son he lost so many years ago. His ward William has his own demons to battle, including an abusive mother. Together they learn to put the past behind them and trust in each other. When Will is summoned back to London and fails to keep in touch, Tom knows something’s wrong and sets off for the City to bring Will home.

Like a work of art there is simplicity and beauty. There is also an element of surprise, as in the problem shown here.

One clue: Look for a vertical and a lateral element in the solution. Have a go.
