this issue 123 August can be a quiet month here in the office and out and about in Ashby with so many people on holiday. It’s a good time for reflection on the year so far and for planning the remainder of the year as once the kids go back to school in september it’s all back to normal and the countdown towards Christmas begins.

www.ashbychurch.co.uk tO lots of people life is getting up, going to work, coming home and watching tV, with some catching up with friends at the weekend. We rarely move outside our comfort zones and life can feel like we’re on auto-pilot. It sometimes feels as if days, weeks, maybe months even can pass without us making a decision about what we actually want to do with our lives; to stand back and take stock. Very often life-changing events, like a bereavement or a health scare, can suddenly catapult us into a different state of mind. to see life with new meaning or find ourselves looking for the bigger picture. What is the point of life? Why am I here? surely there must be more to life than this? We find ourselves looking at the world with a fresh focus. But often this fresh viewpoint will dull and we are back on the treadmill of life once more.

Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby

www.ashbychurch.co.uk

We spend quite a lot of time and energy on our physical health, eating the right food and doing regular exercise but what about our spiritual health; our eternal health? surely it is worth researching the options? Life is too precious to waste without stopping to consider ‘why’. Why are we here? Is there a bigger purpose? Perhaps there is more to life? I look at our beautiful world, at how incredibly balanced an ecosystem can be, how amazing the human body is and know there has to be more but often I’m too bogged down with my daily life to realise it.

Ashby Christadelphians are running a brand new course, called ‘More to Life’. It explores and questions in an informal way how to give life meaning, both now and eternally. there’s more to life than meets the eye – sometimes we just have to stop and look. Visit www.ashbychurch.co.uk for more info about the More to Life course.

body matters

Arthritis of the thumb...

OuR thumb is a little digit with big influence. Our thumb is what makes us as humans unique, and distinct from other mammals. We are the only animal on earth with a fully opposable thumb. It gives us the ability to strongly grip items, and enables more fine movements such as a gentle pinch, or grasp of a pen. We use it in nearly all activities from dressing, feeding, writing, driving etc. In fact, 4% of the brains motor power is devoted to the thumb.

THE THuMB jOINT the carpometacarpal joint (CMC) or thumb joint is located at the base of the thumb joining the thumb to the rest of the hand. the joint is formed where the trapezium bone of the wrist meets the 1st metacarpal bone. the CMC is a very mobile joint. the bones forming the joint are not a very good fit. therefore, there is little bony stability and it is dependent on muscles and ligaments afford its stability. this evolutionary advantage of greater thumb movement, means the joint is less stable and is prone to arthritic changes. Osteoarthritis (OA) of the thumb is a very debilitating condition. Our thumb is required in nearly all grasping and handling movements. When the cartilage lining the surfaces of the 2 adjoining bones wears away, the bones begin to rub against each other and become very painful.

RISk FACTORS FOR CMC ARTHRITIS • Overuse - Like all other joints the more stress we put upon our joints the more likely they are to wear. so in theory someone who does a lot of activity involving the thumb would be more prone to OA of the thumb. Examples include needle work, typing, DIY, racket sports etc. • Abnormal thumb motion - studies have found changes in joint motion of the thumb to be a good predictor of risk of developing OA in the joint before any changes are visible on x-rays.

• Generalised joint laxity – individuals with generalised joint laxity have ligaments that are more stretchy and allow their joints to move further than they normally should. the thumb as mentioned earlier doesn't get much stability from its bones so relies on the ligaments for this role. therefore, individuals with lax ligaments are more likely to suffer thumb OA

• Hormonal Influences - Interestingly women are 6 times more likely than men to develop OA of the thumb. It is thought this is due to the influence of the reproductive hormones. the reproductive hormones in females cause ligaments to be more lax. this means the joint is able to

12

with Sarah Kavanagh, Ashby Osteopathic Clinic

www.ashbyosteopath.com

move further than it normally should. Women who begin menstruation at a young age and go through menopause at a later age have a higher incidence of thumb arthritis. It is thought that this is because they have a greater exposure to reproductive hormones. TREATMENT

• Physical therapy in the early stages can help maintain a more normal range of movement and slow down the development of thumb OA.

• Injections – cortisone to reduce inflammation, and more recently a medication called synvisc which

helps lubricate the joint surfaces.

• Trapeziotomy – removal of the trapezium bone. Follow up studies show relief from pain, but individuals left with weakness and reduced mobility. • Ligament repairs.

• A combination of bone removal and ligament repair. It is unclear whether any surgical option is more superior to the others. It is an area that new techniques are likely to be devised.

As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition. For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book and appointment please call sarah Kavanagh or tristan Hill on 01530 440 442 or email contact @ashbyosteopath.com. venture theatre news

stAgE MAkEuP

It is a bit of a cliché to talk about “the smell of the grease paint” when talking about the attractions of theatre life, but makeup is one of those important things in stage craft which, when done properly, should go unnoticed. to find out more, we talked to one of our most experienced actors, Paul smith. Paul will be familiar to our audiences as an actor who takes on a variety of roles that often require him to change his appearance in subtle (and not so subtle) ways. Here is what he told us about Stage Makeup: “A strange subject for a crusty old Yorkshire bloke. However, if you enjoy acting, as I have for over 50 years, there comes a time when you need to alter your facial features to suit a character –

16

old, young, evil, drunk, ill, etc.

Theatre lighting has a tendency to smooth out the normal facial features (a bonus for some ageing celebrities!) so makeup is needed to correct it, although at the Venture Theatre, we are quite close to the audience so we can often get away without it.

Too much makeup is worse than none; enhancing the features that are already there is the key. For example, to “age up”, I would enhance the lines I already have with a light brown, although I don’t seem to need much these days! At The Venture Theatre, we can manage the basics, but for specialist things e.g. the ghost in The Haunting, we turn to experts such as Jenni Lennard at “The Biz”. This also gives us an opportunity to learn new skills.” If anyone is interested in this, or any other parts of our theatre, visit

us on our social nights, Mondays from 7.30pm onwards (except Bank Holidays). Our next production will be “On Golden Pond” at the end of september and we’ll be telling you more about that in the next issue. More details about our theatre can be found on our website ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk and on Facebook and Twitter.

on the beat Hello everyone...

suspects in the act of committing a crime or have just committed the crime and are in the vicinity.

10 099 1 999 LEICESTERSHIRE Police is asking people to think carefully before they dial 999 as trivial calls could potentially put lives at risk in a genuine emergency. In spite of regular appeals, time-wasters in Leicestershire have made inappropriate 999 calls with requests for telephone numbers, travel directions and other non-urgent enquiries.

Our call takers will deal with those genuine calls that need a police response but some people call 999 when they don't actually need the police or when the situation is not a genuine emergency.

Please do not use the 999 system to report general nuisance or anti-social behaviour e.g. noisy neighbours or an abandoned car.

You can contact Leicestershire Police on 101 for every other non-emergency situation - for example where no immediate police response is required or does not require police attendance at all.

If you have information about crime in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, you can contact us on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous on 0800 555 111. Please check any correspondence you may have received from Leicestershire Police as this will often include a telephone extension number to assist with swift and direct contact with the right people to assist with your enquiry.

If you know the identification (collar) number of a particular officer, you can use our voice messaging system to leave them a message. telephone 101 follow the instructions and when prompted, enter the officer's identification number to leave a message.

0800 555 111 Every minute spent speaking to a caller with a non-urgent enquiry jeopardises immediate responses to genuine emergencies, so please think before you dial.

You should only ring the 999 system if there is a direct and immediate threat to life / limb, or to property.

Prompt attendance is required to catch

24

Please note these emails are not monitored 24 hours a day. Please do not use them to report a crime or if you need to contact the police urgently. Please call 101, or 999 if it is an emergency. Calls to 101 cost 15p for the entire call from both mobile phones and land lines.

Holiday Reads book reviews

For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend.

MAGRUDER'S CURIOSITY CABINET

H.P. Wood

In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

DEAR AMY Helen Callaghan

When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters.

THE LAST OF US Rob Ewing

On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heart-wrenching story.

FISHBOWL Bradley Somer

All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shut-in’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining.

WOMAN ON THE EDGE OF TIME Marge Piercy

No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection.

fitness tips this month a little background on Fitness Republic owner Simon Pellecchia...

dEFINING moments EVERYBOdY in life will have a few defining moments that stand out. Those moments that can alter your personal life and your career. I’d like to share some of mine with you. When I first started training I was about 13 years old, my father had brought a small set of weights and a bench for himself to use. I remember being in the front room trying to lift these weights with all my friends there too. I could

58

hardly lift them! I felt a bit embarrassed to say the least and from that day on I started religiously training every day. that was my first real defining moment, something that sticks in my mind to this very day, little did I know then where it would lead to! By the age of 18 I had been training for a good few years, although the thought of being a fitness instructor had never really entered my mind. I left school at 17 not knowing what to do with myself. so much so, that my mum frog marched me into college and made me pick a subject to do. she wasn’t bothered what but as long as I was doing something to work towards a career of sorts. It was only the day after I had completed a 2-year business course that I walked past my local gym and saw an advert for an apprentice Fitness Instructor. I went in and started the following Monday! A definite career defining moment! Here I was to meet many people including Maria who is now one of Fitness Republic’s longest serving members of staff. We met back in 1991 and bless her, she hasn’t changed a bit! In 2007 me and sarah had an amazing wedding in Cuba. It was absolute bliss. sarah and I had met 9 years earlier at Holywell Health Studio in Ashby, she had managed the reception and salon

whilst I was the general manager there. sadly, Holywell is no longer there. 2008 saw the birth of our first child Lily, such a bundle of fun but very hard work, as any parent I'm sure will tell you. the biggest career defining moment was when I took the reins of Fitness Republic in May 2010.

I must admit it was a really tough decision to purchase the club as it wasn't in a good way. Financially it was struggling and staff morale was at an all-time low. And on top of this sarah was heavily pregnant with our second daughter, Esme. However, after much deliberation (oh and, plus seeing a physic!) we took on the challenge.

Honestly this has been one of the best decisions in my life, everyday it’s a pleasure to come to work, I have made so many friends here, love helping people to get the best out of themselves and enjoy doing my own training here too. It’s never been about money or wealth for me, but more about how you feel and how you can impact each and every day to make a real difference to people’s lives. can bear fruit A large tub can support a small shrub and even a small tree which is on a dwarf rootstock. This means you can bring colour and interest to a paved area. Potentially you can have fruit trees, salad crops, vegetables or herbs close to your kitchen door.

Rather than choosing an ‘ordinary’ tree, a patio fruit tree is a way of having a productive tree in a small space. It also allows you to move it to a sheltered place in winter if needed. Dwarfing rootstocks and genetically dwarf cultivars should do well in a large clay or concrete pot of no less than 50cm diameter. You may get less fruit than a tree planted in open ground and the life span may be limited to 10 years, but even so it is worth doing. I suggest not underplanting fruit trees in pots with bulbs or bedding plants as the tree will need all the nutrition it can get. Fruit trees in pots must be regularly watered as rainfall will not be enough. For pears and apples to pollinate there needs to be two types of cultivars. If your neighbours or properties close to you have apple or pear trees then your single tree will bear

fruit. genetically dwarf apple varieties you may try include, Maloni Billy, Maloni Lilly, Maloni Sally and Garden Red, all of which are desert apples. For small root stock apples varieties, Fiesta, Greensleves, Kidds Orange Red and Sunset are desert apples and ‘Arthur Turner’ Howgate Wonder and Lane’s Prince Albert are cookers. As for pears, a good genetically grown pear is ‘Garden Pearl’ and a patio pear is usually grown on a quince root stock and varieties such as ‘Beth. Beurre Hardy’, ‘Conference’ and ‘Concorde’ should all do well. similarly, there are genetically dwarf and grafted Cherries, Medlars, Plums and Gages available. slightly less common fruit tress such as Peaches, Apricots and Nectarines when grown in pots can easily be covered in winter helping to protect them from the cold and reducing the chance of fungal diseases setting in. the best fruiting tree for a pot is a Fig, and the restricted root growth helps the production of figs. In terms of compost, use a John Innes No. 3 and make sure the pot has holes for drainage and some broken crocks or stones in the bottom to aid drainage. tubs will need regular watering, and fertiliser a couple of times a year will help your plants, and every three years or so re-potting will be necessary. Happy gardening.

spotlight on... Did you know that cardiovascular disease kills more than 160,000 people in the uK every year?

Glenfield HOSPITAL

RIGHT on our doorstep we are lucky to have Glenfield Hospital with its reputation as a centre of excellence. It is also home to the university of Leicester British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre (CVRC) - a leading international centre for heart research which aims to bring together scientists, doctors and patients to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment available.

Research such as this needs patient involvement and to help

66

facilitate this, a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group dedicated to the cardiac research project has been formed. the group meets to receive and comment on updates from the research teams and to help the professional staff by giving the patient and public perspective. Members also help make sure communication with patients is clear and easily understood and spread the word about the research that is going on at Leicester’s Hospitals. those who get involved in volunteering for such groups often have first-hand experience themselves. Terry Finnigan, a groby resident of 20 years, is a prime example. Fourteen years ago he suffered a heart attack and collapsed at a Jubilee Party. He was lucky, as there were four nurses there who gave him lifesaving resuscitation until an ambulance took him to hospital. three weeks later he had surgery at glenfield Hospital and had a miniature Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) inserted which automatically sends a shock to restart his heart if it stops beating. terry is well aware that events could have gone the other way. His gratitude for such a lifesaving intervention and the extra years of active life it has given him have found expression in the tireless volunteer work he does for Leicester’s Hospitals. If you would like to be involved in the PPI group or want more information you can contact the department of Cardiovascular Sciences at glenfield Hospital on 0116 258 3021 or email sp504@le.ac.uk.

storytime “What are you doing here?” tony asked. “Come to check up on me?” Richard had anticipated some chaos when he popped round to visit his dad, but hadn’t expected to find him on the patio stood up to his armpits in a wheelie bin full of water. “No,” Richard lied. “Mum asked me to pop round to see if you’ve watered her Busy Lizzies.” though the sight of the drooping bedding plants had already answered that question for him. “Do you want me to ask what you’re doing?” Richard asked. “Or is it better if I don’t know?” “I don’t mind telling you,” tony said, “so long as you don’t spoil the surprise for your mum.” “The surprise that you’ve filled your dustbin with water and then climbed in it?” Richard asked. “No longer a dustbin, Dickie,” tony said proudly. “What you have here is a fully functioning hot tub. I wanted to surprise your mum when she got back from her spa weekend.” “She’ll certainly be surprised,” Richard agreed. “She can sit in here of an evening and put her white wine spritzer

and pickled onions on the open lid.” tony tapped the lid behind him where an empty pickled onion jar was rolling around. “These things go for megabucks.” “Why’s it bubbling like that?” Richard asked, studying the dark water more closely. “I borrowed the pump out of the fish tank,” tony said. “Can’t have a hot tub without bubbles.” “Don’t the goldfish mind?” queried Richard. “They’ll be alright for a bit,” tony said. “And how are you heating the water?” Richard asked. “You what?” tony said. “It’s a hot tub, so how are you making it hot?” “No, it doesn’t want to be hot,” tony scratched his ear with the pickled onion fork, “it’s for when you’re too hot, you know, to cool you down a bit.” “So you’ve filled the dustbin with cold water, stuck the fish tank pump in there and climbed in,” Richard said as calmly as possible. “Pleasant is it?”

70

“It’s not bad.” tony’s teeth rattled slightly. “I could stay in here all day.” “Surely you’d start to prune after a bit?” Richard noticed his dad’s finger tips. “How long have you been in there exactly?” “Not long,” tony said defensively, “I’ll get out when you’ve gone. Probably could do with a spot of lunch, now that I’ve eaten all the pickled onions.” “Why not get out now?” Richard said, then a horrible thought flashed through his mind. “You’re not naked in there are you?” “No!” tony batted the suggestion away. “I’ve got my best undercrackers on.” “So get out then,” Richard said. “Like I said,” tony looked uncomfortable, “in a bit.” “You can’t get out,” Richard grinned, “can you?” “I did have a try earlier,” tony said. “I’ll have another go in a bit.” “Do you want some help?” “No, I’m fine.” “You’re stuck aren’t you?”

Tub

“Well, maybe just a little bit.” Richard walked around the dustbin assessing the situation. “Hang on, Dad.” He took a firm hold of the back of the bin and tipped. “It’ll be easier if we release some of the water first.” the water sploshed gently over the side, wetting Richard’s feet. “Careful Dickie,” tony said nervously, “there are quite a few gallons in here.” Just then the sheer weight overwhelmed Richard and the whole bin tipped over. tony was thrown out onto the patio like the contents of a trawler net. “At least we’ve watered the Busy Lizzies,” Richard said. “You alright?” “Never better.” tony picked himself up. “Is there time to refill it before your mum gets back?”

a walk in the forest Standleys Barn & Calke Park Calke is one of my favourite places to walk – whatever the time of year the scenery is stunning. This walk takes in a quiet country lane, beautiful grassy fields, woodlands and part of the restored tramway – I loved it! It took me a little over one hour. Some of it is along a lane and both the fields and parkland may have cattle or sheep grazing at times so be prepared to put dogs on leads in places. Standleys Barn Farm has its own butchery and sells fantastic sausages that are made on the premises as well as meat from their own pigs and cattle. They’re open Friday and Saturday if you want to treat yourself. To get to the start of the walk leave Ashby via Smisby Road, crossing over the by-pass roundabout onto the B5006 towards Ticknall. Continue for about 3 miles until you pass Top Farm on your right then take the next right into Staunton Lane (signed Staunton Harold). Shortly after the road bends there is a wide area under the trees on the left where you can park. (1)

1

2

3

Leaving your car, walk down the lane in the same direction that you were travelling to pass by the drive to White Hollow Cottages on your right. Carry on along the lane and shortly before reaching standleys Barn Farm (which is visible ahead and on the left) look out for a wooden public footpath post on your left. Follow this footpath sign as it leads you over a stile marked with the National trust logo (2) and across the fields. As you reach the far side of this field aim slightly to the right of the large stone water trough and you will see a stile beside a gate which leads into the next field. Cross this stile and, following the footpath arrow, turn immediately right so you are walking along the field edge with woodland on your right.

Continue straight on along the edge of this field and half way along the next one you will come to some wooden fencing with a gate set back in it – cross the stile here (3) and turn right to follow the wide track through the woods. Remain on this track as it curves around and takes you through a small wooden gate before emerging onto the driveway through the grounds of Calke Abbey.

turn left on the verge alongside the drive and stay on there until you pass by a pond on your right. shortly after this bear left to follow the grassy track that leads away from the drive and through to a wide open area of grassland. Keep to the left as you walk around this open area and roughly two thirds of the way along you will come to a stile in the fence on your left. Cross over this stile and it will take you through a small wooded area and then over a further stile into a field.

5

4

After crossing the second stile (4) follow the path straight ahead of you across the field. Continue ahead, going through open gateways, to cross two further fields before coming to a stile. Don’t cross this stile – about 20 yards to the left of it is a small, wooden gate – go through that wooden gate and it will lead you down onto a hard core path that runs along the route of the old tramway.

turn left along the tramway and keep following it. It runs quite close to the road in places and you will go through a gap beside a large metal gate and then pass by a footpath sign that leads off over the fields to your right before the tramway emerges onto a lane. go straight across the lane and pick up the tramway again on the other side (5), staying on it until you come to some cottages on your left. Leaving the tramway, turn left to go past the cottages and then follow the driveway down to meet staunton Lane. turn left and follow the lane around the bend to arrive back at the start of your walk. All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

1 Preheat the oven to 1800C/fan 1600C/gas 4. grease a 33cm x 23cm swiss roll tin and line the base and sides with lightly greased baking paper. 2 Place the eggs and 150g of the caster sugar in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water and whisk with an electric whisk until the mixture is very pale and thick (see tip). Remove from the heat and continue whisking until the mixture leaves a trail when the whisk is lifted. 3 sift the flour over the mixture and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and tilt the tin to level the surface. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and just firm to the touch. 4 Invert the roulade out onto a sheet of baking paper dusted with the rest of the sugar. Cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave to cool completely. 5 Whip the cream in a large bowl until softly peaking. scoop the seeds and flesh from the passion fruit and fold into the cream. Peel the mango and cut a few thin slices to decorate the roulade; finely chop the rest. Remove the paper lining from the roulade and trim the edges. spread the passion fruit cream over the sponge and top with the chopped mango. 6 using the sugared paper as a guide, roll up the roulade from one short end. transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the reserved mango slices just before serving. TOP TIP the trick to a really light and fluffy fatless sponge is to whisk the mixture over the simmering water for at least 7 to 8 minutes to incorporate as much air as possible, and to fold in the flour very gently to avoid knocking out too much air.
