Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Last year’s debut Hello Heritage was a great success and we want to build on that this time around. “We are very proud of our heritage in North West Leicestershire and this is your chance to immerse yourselves in it. LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS An important local historical figure; Ann Ayre Hely is to be honoured with a Green Plaque from Leicestershire County Council which will be installed on the outside wall of Ravenstone Hospital historic almhouses. The unveiling will take place on 27th September and will stand as a permanent tribute to her life and achievements. Ann was born Ann Ayre Bradshaw in the village of Ravenstone in 1919 and was obviously a very courageous and able woman. From a very ordinary background (her parents kept the Plough Inn) she went on to volunteer as a nurse during the Crimean War and worked in two hospitals in Turkey, firstly Smyrna and then Renioi. Ann was clearly good at her job and highly thought of. An entry in the nursing register at the Florence Nightingale Museum describes her as “a very superior woman, a clever nurse, excellent temper, honest, sober, trustworthy and obliging, a great peace-maker amongst others.”

On her return to England after the war she nursed Florence Nightingale herself for a short while and was chosen to nurse the mother of Queen Victoria but the Duchess died before Ann could take up her post. At the age of 78 she was honoured with the Order of the Royal Red Cross military nursing medal. After her death in 1902, her story was almost forgotten and even her medal was lost. The new Green Plaque will be available for public viewing from 28th September onwards.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Age UK befriending service Are you a ‘people’ person? Do you like to chat but equally are you a good listener? Can you spare an hour or two regularly to really make a difference to an older, isolated person? Then you could be a great befriender!!! As we grow old there are many challenges to face and these aren’t always limited to health issues. For example, loneliness is more common than you think for the elderly. “Currently, a million people over 65 feel lonely ‘often’ or ‘always’ and 3.7 million people live alone, many with no means of getting out and about.” (English Longitudinal Study on Ageing) Social isolation and loneliness affects a person’s quality of life. Life changing events such as becoming housebound, losing your carer or your partner, not having your family around you during the day or a change in your health and your ability to get out and about can disconnect you from the outside world and leave you feeling lonely. Often people do not want to ask for help but no one wants to be lonely every day. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, working together with North West Leicestershire District Council offers a volunteer befriending service aimed at tackling loneliness and providing much needed company and friendship for older people within our area. This works by matching an older person with a befriender who will visit or call on a regular basis to enjoy a chat, provide a listening ear or perhaps provide support to get out and about in the local community. Initially as a volunteer it’s about finding out about your new friend, their interests and how you can best help them. All volunteer befrienders receive training and support.

advice team or local social opportunities, details of which the volunteer befriender can provide. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland currently has a list of local elderly residents in North West Leicestershire seeking friendship and company. Just a few hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to somebody and make you a new friend. A current volunteer befriender sums up the benefit to him of his befriending role; “I have been visiting Jack for just over a year now. He just wants to see somebody for a coffee and a chat, I get a tremendous warm feeling from that experience.” If you could be a friend to a local, older person and offer a regular visit to them please get in touch with Donna Watson, Befriending Co-ordinator at Coalville Library, High Street, Coalville. LE67 3EA. Whether young or old, male or female, Donna would love to hear from you. Call 01530 460 553 or 01530 833 000 or email donna.watson@ageukleics. org.uk You can also find out more online at www.ageukleics.org.uk

The befriending project not only tackles loneliness and isolation it can also act as a gateway to other services provided by Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland such as their local day care centres, their free information and

YOUR WELLBEING

How to keep that holiday feeling!! Holidays are an essential part of life for physical and mental health whether it is a few days camping or flying to sunnier climates. Just the term ‘holiday’ can make us psychologically relax. We allow ourselves to break from routine, do fun things, avoid domestic chores, take part in new experiences, do things that give us pleasure (reading, exercise, sleeping, intimacy) and focus on relationships that are important to us. Despite the feel good factor so many of us return to ‘normal’ life as soon as we walk through the front door and before we have even finished unpacking. Then how often do we start planning for the next holiday so that normal day to day living can feel like a drag? Trying to retain the ‘holiday’ mood can be achieved by making a few life changes. Once a week give yourself a break whether that is sitting in the garden doing nothing, reading a magazine or a book or a family night out. Although it may sound indulgent it can help you sustain better physical and mental health which makes you more productive between holidays and life much more fun and less of a chore.

Futureminds can help people learn the art of relaxation in individual 30 minute sessions, we also offer life coaching to help put you in control of your life and of course counselling for issues which keep resurfacing. Please call us on 01530 414144 to make an appointment or look at our website www.futureminds.co.uk

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Behind the scenes.... Like most businesses, there’s always a lot more going on behind the scenes that meets the eye. Let’s take a look at my gym, Fitness Republic. On the outside hopefully everything looks great and you feel amazing when you’re in the gym. On the inside there are many day to day activities that myself and the team focus on. First and foremost are our members. We have endless conversations on how we can motivate you guys more, how we can keep you attending regularly, as that’s where the results come from. Consistent training can be hard and any way we can make it easier, then the more chance you will attend regularly. Our monthly gym challenge is a really good example of this. Also, we like to give you a gentle nudge if you haven’t been attending. Maintenance is a big part of behind the scenes too. I hate it when things are out of order, so regular checks and identifying problems before they arise is a daily task.

34

Cleaning is a major part of our days too, with so many of you guys popping in for your workouts, we always strive to keep on top of the cleanliness and are very proud of our reputation for this. Staff progress is something that is on the very top of my list of day to day activities too. I firmly believe that I have the best staff and alwaays trying to push them further and help them improve as the better they are, the moree they can help you too! We have regular handovers, team m meetings and staff training, plus we have invested in two new apprentices for the future! (More on Brooke and Alex next month!) Many members will tell you how friendly and close our team are - and how much fun we have! Marcus became manager almost 2 years ago and keeps the team organized and motivated.

A big shout out now to Sarah, who takes care of our social media channels. Social media plays a massive part in our day to day activities and keeps us in close contact with a lot of our members, it really can be a full-time job, but Sarah is brilliant at capturing the essence of Fitness Republic!

physique. A fantasticc achievement rewarding his commitment to his training and vegan diet.

Our own personal fitness development is also a huge part of what we do. Keeping ourselves in tip top shape is a daily occurrence, with all staff training themselves most days. It’s why we all got in to fitness in the first place! Hopefully we can give you inspiration from how we look and feel! Just take a look at Marcus - lots and lots of hours of total dedication goes into his training for competitions! Marcus recently came 2nd in UKBFF classic championship - men’s

Last but not least our class schedule is amazing, with great classes taught by a great team of instructors that work closely alongside our team, Jacqui, Lauren, Gina, Eliza, Sam, Claire Stapley, Claire Wilkinson, David and Kate. Keeping the schedule running week in and week out without any hiccups is very demanding, but these guys pull together amazingly and help each other (and us!) out whenever needed and are truly unsung heroes in my eyes! Summing it all up, FR is all about teamwork, as one of my favourite saying is ‘Teamwork makes the Dream Work!’ By Simon Pellechia Fitness Republic

BODY MATTE ERS

Sciaticaa This month’s Body Matter’s article takes a look at Sciatica. The Sciaatic nerve is a very large nerve that starts in n the low back (being created by five smaller nerves leaving the spine),which then trravels through the pelvis, into the buttockss and then runs down the backs of the legs. Att its largest the nerve is roughly the same thicckness as your thumb, making it the largest neerve in the body. Although sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain, the true meaning of the term is often misunderstood. Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a medical diagnosis for what is truly causing the symptoms. This point is important, because treatment for sciatica or sciatic symptoms will often be different, depending upon the underlying cause of the compression. So, the correct diagnosis of the cause of your pain is of paramount importance to your overall management and recovery. Here are a few of the more common causes osteopaths, such as myself, see in clinic: DISC PROLAPSE OR HERNIATION (slipped disc) This compression happens in the spine when the fluid centre of the disc escapes and puts pressure on the nerve as it leaves the spinal cord. Pain is often in the back of the legs and will often last for many months. ARTHRITIS IN THE SPINE As the spine gets older it is normal to see signs of wear and tear, however the changes occurring can cause the holes that the nerves leave through to reduce in size, which increases the likelihood of compression. Although the arthritic changes are not reversible, corrective treatment can drastically reduce the pressure in the affected area and will often relieve even the most severe symptoms. PIRIFORMIS COMPRESSION This is a muscle in the buttock which when tight can cause pressure 42

on the nerve causing nagging leg pain. It can occur due to long periods of stretch or in response to joint aggravation. SACROILIAC JOINT PROBLEMS These are two very large joints between the pelvis and the spine which can become locked or painful producing muscle spasm and difficulty with particular movements. Females are particularly prone to this around pregnancy due to changes in pelvic posture and hormonal influences. TRIGGER POINTS are points in muscles that mimic pain caused by a nerve. This is not true sciatic compression at all. When muscles are tight for long periods they start to suffer with a lack of oxygen as blood is unable to enter them. This causes pain, which can often radiate all the way to the foot, even if the muscle in question is located in the buttock. This type of pain is very easily treatable using massage and other techniques to increase blood flow. As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition.

For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book an appointment please call Sarah Kavanagh or Tristan Hill on 01530 440 442 or e-mail contact@ashbyosteopath.com Please feel free to visit www.ashbyosteopath.co.uk

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

PENSIONS JARGON  BUSTED No one should be deterred from planning for their retirement by the jargon used in the pension industry. Happily, we are well versed in turning complex financial terms into plain English. Here we unravel a couple of terms that you may have come across and be unclear about. ANNUITIES When you retire, you can choose to take some or all of your pension pot as an annuity, an insurance product that provides a guaranteed income for life. One of the benefits that annuities provide is security. Unlike other retirement income products, and with the exception of investmentlinked annuities, you aren’t exposed to stock market risk which could erode your income. On the downside, should you die early, the residual value of the annuity dies with you; there is usually no return of capital to your estate. DRAWDOWN With income drawdown, you take a retirement income direct from your pension pot while leaving the rest of the cash invested, providing an opportunity for future growth. There is no minimum amount for drawdown, so you could,

52

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

for instance, take your 25% tax-free lump sum and choose to leave the remaining funds invested. You can also move funds into drawdown in stages, known as partial or phased drawdown. The 25% tax-free amount doesn’t have to be taken at once on retirement – smaller amounts can be taken over time, each with 25% tax-free. Once in drawdown you can access funds as you need them. You could, for example, vary the amount you take each year, taking less if you wish to remain in a lower tax band, or more if you have plans to spend. After taking your 25% tax-free cash, your withdrawals will be subject to income tax and your drawdown income is added to any other income you receive in that tax year. It’s important to remember that taking large withdrawals may result in you paying tax at a higher rate. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current pension plans and financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Just start reading! As the summer holidays draw to a close it will soon be time for children to start their new school year. I’m sure you remember that nervous feeling of going back to school after the summer, getting back into the old routine and getting out of the relaxed habits of the summer break. Back at school, children will be introduced to new areas of learning – new topics, subjects and source material. Children will be given new reference books, full of the information they’ll need as they study. Their hope is that the effort and training undertaken now will help them throughout their life in the future; help them to develop skills; help them to be happy. In the same way that children start studying new books at the beginning of term, there’s an amazing book that we can all pick up and read. It’s a book that can give us all we need to have a happy and

54

fulfilled life; that’s still as relevant today as it was when it was written centuries ago. It doesn’t matter whether we are 5 or 105, the Bible has something for each of us. Want your kids to know more? We have a friendly, thriving Sunday School at 10am every Sunday, where children learn about the Bible and its message. Scheduled at the same time, we also have Bible Hour for adults which tackles challenging everyday issues, using the Bible to find solutions. Don’t own a Bible? Drop in to our church hall and we’ll give you your own copy of this amazing book for FREE. It’s the text book for life – you simply have to pick it up and start reading! ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

A M T G revisit the Cornish coast after 50 years! In 1969 we took to the stage under our original name (the Ashbeian Gilbert and Sullivan Society) at the Town Hall in Ashby to perform The Pirates of Penzance. It seems rather fitting that 50 years later we will be setting sail again for Cornwall in April 2019 with this classic comedy. A fresh take on one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas, our hilariously updated version took New York by storm when it premiered in Central Park in 1980, leading to a subsequent smash-hit Broadway run. The story follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. Frederic rejects the pirates’ way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. When the Pirate King discovers Mabel’s father, MajorGeneral Stanley, has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, it leads to a fabulously funny stand-off between the swashbuckling pirates and the police.

With so many memorable roles in this fabulous production, we’re delighted to be bringing it to Repton, and give a gracious bow to our former Members from 1969 as we tread the same rocky coastal pathway through this hilarious show. The box office at amtg.org.uk will be live very soon, and we are also still very keen to hear from budding pirates, daughters, and police officers who would like to join us. New and returning members are always welcome – please send a message to enquiries@amtg.org.uk

PET’S CORNER

Is Your Pet in Pain?

September is Animal Pain Awaren ness Month

It’s definitely worthwhile paying attention to changes in your pet’s behaviour, as it could indicate that they’re in pain. September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, so here we look at some of the signs you should look for. Altered sleeping patterns Some pets sleep more when they’re dealing with pain, whilst others are less able to sleep because of the discomfort. If your pet’s general sleeping pattern has altered noticeably, it’s worth looking a little closer at other behaviours, as it could be a sign of physical distress. Changed social interactions It’s more obvious when your pet withdraws from social interactions if they’re naturally gregarious, but even quieter animals may be noticeably withdrawn when they’re feeling pain. On the other hand, they could be more aggressive, or generally less tolerant of people and other animals around them.

Drop in appetite Hum mans tend to lose their appetite when in pain, and it’s the same with anim mals. If your pet is eatin ng less and appears to be losing weight, speak to your vet as there might be a serious underlying cause. Change in eye appearance When an animal is in pain, it often shows in their eyes, which can appear strained, potentially with larger dilated pupils. Dogs and cats also sometimes squint, and develop bloodshot eyes. It’s often an animal’s general behaviour that alerts you to their pain, but by keeping an eye out for these telltale signs, you’ll be able to react quickly and deal with the cause.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Highgrove Royal Gardens

I recently had a wonderful day visiting the gardens at Highgrove. This is the private home of HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. The gardens are charming and the separate areas link effortlessly and interestingly into one another. The gardens have been shaped and developed over the last 35 years with a view to enhancing the setting of the house. This aim has been achieved through careful planning and with the help of a few top plants people and designers such as Rosemary Very, Sir Roy Strong, and of course a very talented gardening team. One of the more recently opened parts is the carpet garden inspired by a Turkish carpet. The shapes within the carpet were interpreted into a garden space for the Chelsea Flower Show in 2001 and then later transferred to Highgrove to be recycled and enjoyed. It is a surprising space and very tranquil, enclosed by pink walls and cypress trees.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 There are various different areas including a cottage garden with a pink, yellow and blue theme; a Mediterranean garden; a Thyme Walk edged with golden yew topiary and hornbeam pleeched hedges; a terrace garden by the house with a mill stone water feature at its centre and four recently planted 150 year old olive trees from Spain. Unsurprisingly there is also a really lovely productive kitchen garden which is entirely organic, as you would expect, and is divided into the shape of the crosses of Saint George and Saint Andrew by the plant Buxus semperviren (Box) hedges. At the end of the Azalea walk there is a statue of Diana, The Goddess of Hunting. It is here in this part of the garden I saw my most favourite thing – an inscription over a doorway in Egyptian hieroglyphics which translates as: ‘the Flowers in the garden are a reflection of the stars in the sky’. I suppose unsurprisingly, as we are talking about a royal home, there also happens to be room for an arboretum too, which within in it hides a ‘sanctuary’ - built as a place for contemplation. Space for all these different gardens is not the norm, but in fact this place does feel imaginably liveable and homely. I think this has been achieved by being thoughtfully done slowly over time, for the enjoyment of the owners. Profits from the garden tours are donated to the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation and information about forthcoming tours can be found at www.highgrovegardens.com

Happy gardening!

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

These are a few of our favourite things What are your favourite things? Bright copper kettles? Warm woollen mittens? Brown paper packages tied up with strings? I’m not sure they’d be on everyone’s list. But what about the glorious colours of trees in the Autumn, and kicking through a pile of Autumn leaves? Or what about the sound of beautiful voices singing, and the experience of listening to music with others, sharing the enchantment of it, or the excitement or the buzz or the joy? Music is very special to us here at St Helen’s, as Ashby folk know, which is why so many people come to our Advent and Christmas carol services, starting their festive celebrations with the sounds of our glorious choir. This Autumn here at St Helen’s we are sharing our love of music by presenting an Autumn Concert Series. It begins with 8ctave on 14th September, and continues with Mosaic on 12th October, and Concordia’s Remembrance Concert for the end of World War 1 on 10th November (for which ticket sales will go to the British Legion.)

8ctave is a group of beautifully voiced Leicestershire priests! Many local people will have already delighted in the voice of Reverend Adele Adshead, but it seems she’s not the only singing priest in the area. A group of singing vicars has got to have the potential to be one of all our favourite things!

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Our summer exhibition, Policing Ashby, was opened on Wednesday 1st August by Assistant Chief Constable Jason Masters of Leicestershire Police. The exhibition highlights developments in the policing of Ashby from the Parish Constable with his stocks and pillory to today’s Neighbourhood Policing Team. It aims to entertain: pictures of olden-days moustachioed policemen, inform: the famous Ferrers murder case and some lesser known incidents such as the 1865 election riot and draw out some comparisons between then and now. To bring things right up to date, our local Beat Constable PC Mark Arjoo agreed to come into the museum on August 9th to answer visitors’ questions and queries. This riveting exhibition has already attracted many visitors and runs until September 30th. Congratulations to one of our trustees, Carol Walton, on her superb display on Leicestershire Police. Much hard work went into this and linking up with the police over the last few months.

The Museum is delighted to have been commissioned by Ashby Town Council to prepare three information sheets to be converted into freestanding display panels for the Loudoun Monument in Bath Street, Ashby Cemetery and Hood Park. They will be similar to those on the Bath Grounds. This is another example of the Museum being actively involved in promoting the town’s rich heritage for both its own inhabitants and for visitors. We are still looking for volunteers to help with reception duties and archiving. This only needs a commitment of two hours once a fortnight. Please do come in to see us (Monday or Wednesday mornings) for further information.

TECHNOLOGY

Tech for the new term Get your child’s next computer for less From clothes to computers, the cost of sending your offspring to school, college or university seems to increase every day. So how can you be sure you’re not spending more on technology than you need to? The trick is to get the maximum bang for every buck – and sometimes that means avoiding false economies. A cheap laptop may save you a few pounds now, but it might not be able to cope with everything your child needs it to do; for example, a Chromebook laptop may be ultra-cheap but if your child’s going to be using it instead of a TV its small scree en isn’t going to be a lot of fun.

HP Chromebook Laptop

Another option is to consider a refurbished Mac. Refurbished computers are computers that have been sold and then returned. Sometimes that’s because of a fault that has since been corrected or because a customer simply changed their mind; sometimes it’s because the laptop was leased to a company and returned after the lease period is up. Whatever the reason, it can’t be sold as new. That can mean good discounts even on fairly new computers.

It’s important to understand the key differences between new an nd refurbished computers. The sweet spot for budget hey ship without faults but Th laptops is around the £300 may have damaged or missing mark, and if you go much paackaging, and they may have below that you’ll be cutting ght cosmetic damage on their lig corners. It’s often a better caase. The warranty is much idea to shop around for a shorter, and any AppleCare second hand laptop on insurance you take out will Gumtree or eBay (if you’re run out on the anniversary Acer Aspire budget laptop careful: stick to reputable of the date the Mac was sellers and make sure you follow the buyer first sold, not the date you acquired it – so for protection policy so you’re protected against any example you won’t be able to buy AppleCare for a shenanigans) – a powerful laptop that’s been well refurbished Mac that’s three years old. looked after for a year or two may be a better buy As you’d expect, the older the Mac the bigger the than a brand new, super-cheap laptop. discount – and if you’re a confident eBay buyer That’s particularly true of Apple laptops. VENTURE THEATRE NEWS Ashby Venture Theatre are excited to perform the hit radio comedy ‘Welcome to our Village Please Invade Carefully’. When the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green is invaded by an alien race called the Geonin, the local residents come up against Uljabaan, the smooth-talking leader of the aliens. Whilst everyone else is keen not to “rock the boat” and some think having the world run by alien marauders might actually be an improvement, Katrina is determined to stop it and sets up a resistance movement. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 2, ‘Welcome to our Village - Please Invade Carefully,’ was hailed “the sitcom success story of 2012…” by the Radio Times. Writer Eddie Robson has written books, comics and short stories for both television and theatre including a variety of spin offs for the BBC television series Doctor Who. ‘Welcome to our Village - Please Invade Carefully’

will be performed in a radio play style at the Ashby Venture Theatre for one week only from Tuesday 2nd October to Saturday 6th October 2018. Tickets are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre and online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ ashbydramaticsociety.

Foot Files: CRACKED HEELS With summer in full swing and temperatures soaring here at Perfect Feet we see a lot of dry and cracked heels. This is not only a cosmetic problem but can be painful to walk upon if the cracks become too deep. WHY DO YOUR HEELS CRACK?

ADVICE AND TREATMENT

A few common reasons why this may happen include:

• After bathing use a pumice stone to gently file heels.

• Open back footwear leaving skin exposed to the elements.

• Use of a heel balm with 25% Urea in twice daily to rehydrate.

• Diabetes or being overweight.

• Podiatrist use sterile surgical blades to safely remove any excess hard skin to the heels so moisturizers are more effective.

• Hard skin building up on the heel causing to dry and crack. • Certain skin condition like Eczema or Psoriasis.

• We will provide self-care tips.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Forest Rock and 1

Holly Heyes Wood

This interesting walk takes you on a circcuit from just outside Whitwick towards Mount St Bernard Abbey and around Whitwick Quarry before returning via a section of the Ivanhoe Way. There are some steep bits as you climb up through Forest F Rock Wood and then down and around the side of the e same s hill and you’ll pass by two stone circles though they h certainly aren’t Stone Henge! There are spots where you ou could enjoy a picnic in the later section of the walk, especially if you have lovely weather as I did. The walk takes around an hour and enjoys views ar of Whitwick Quarry and Mount St Bernard Abbey, plus a M pretty stretch through Holly H Heyes Wood. The walk starts on Leicester Road in Whitwick. As you the road goes up the hill out of Whitwick there is a grey hit dry stone wall on your left, look for a wooden kissing gate leading to Forest Rock Wood with a space where s a couple of cars can pull in beside it. For SSat Nav users, the postcode LE67 5GJ should bring you to the start. Go through the kissing gate to Forest Rock Wood (1) and follow the path straight up the hill, it’s steep and there are a couple of tracks off to either side on the way up but keep to the main path all the way, passing by a large rock on your way up (2), until you emerge at a circle of small stones right on top of the hill.

2

Walk into the centre of the circle - there are two paths leading off, take the smaller one that goes back down the side of the hill to your left. This path will curve around to the left and drop down through another rather overgrown, circle of stones before arriving at a T junction with a yellow footpath post with 2 arrowss on (3). Curiously both of the arrows point the same way ((to your left) - I wonder if someone put one on the wrong n way? You actually want to turn the other way (to your ou right) so that the dry stone wall is on your left. Soon you will start to pass attractive rocky outcrops to the left eft and you will see the green chain fence surrounding Whitwick quarry W on your right (this fence will feature later ate in the walk too). Keep straight along this path until you reach a T junction at the end of it where you can justt see the top of Mount St Bernard Abbey in the distance. Turn right at this junction, following the yellow arrow allong the next path. Ignore n

3

the public footpath that goes off to your left across the field, el keeping straight on instead. d You will have a wall on your left for a little way hil The quarry is and then go steeply uphill. now on your right and as you continue on this stretch you enjoy some fine views across it (4). Stay on this path h as it curves right and is joined by another path a coming in from the direction of Mount St Bernard Abbey which is off to your left.

Shortly after the end of the quarry the path forks - take the unmarked ed right hand fork, turning so that the e Abbey which was visible to your left is now behind you. Fo ollow this along o onto a wide track and ke eep bearing around u to the right (away fro om the marked d path). As you walk along thiss track (5) the e green quarry fencing is on your right again and you will pass a permissive e way arrow shortly befo ore em e merging in the carr park of Midland Quarry Products.

5

C Cross straight over the main road from the car park a aand then n tturn left for just a few yards – look for a narrow path on your right that leads through the ttrees and n out into the corner of the field behind d them. G Go down this path and then up the field edge (narrow in places) to join a track at the end of the field beside de three large stones. Turn rightt onto this track (you are now on the Ivanhoe Way) and d following it you will pass by the entrance to t Coalville e Meadow, a site of special scientific interest (6), and then come to green metal barrierss marking the entrance to Holly Hayes Wood.. Keep straight ahead on the main path through the wood to emerge between houses e on to St Bernards Road. Turn left, then n first right and first right again to return to Leicester Road with the start of the walk justt a short distance along to your right on the e opposite side of the road. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ON THE BEAT

We are currently seeing an increase in so called ‘car key burglaries’. A car key burglary is a crime where someone breaks into your home with the specific aim of removing your car keys and stealing your car. An operation is in place to find and arrest those responsible, and car owners are being urged to take some simple crime prevention measures to protect their car. The best advice is to hide your car keys and keep them well away from the front door taking them upstairs with you when you go to bed. Steering wheel locks are becoming more popular again and can prevent the car being stolen even if someone has the keys – they also act as a deterrent. If it has an alarm or immobiliser then make sure it is switched on. You can also have your vehicles windows etched with its registration number or the last seven digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN). This can put criminals off, as it makes your car more difficult to sell. It also makes it easier for the police to identify and/or return your vehicle if it is stolen. Always park your car in a garage if you have one.

Finally, if you’re aware of anyone behaving suspiciously around your home or vehicle, please call us immediately on 101 or visit leics.police.uk/ contact-us for ways to report. If there is a crime taking place, then dial 999. PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

BOOK REVIEWS

Books to make you think The Salt Path Raynor Winn Raynor and her husband Moth lost their farm just days after finding out that Moth was suffering from an incurable, lifelimiting illness. With no money and nowhere to live, the couple made the decision to walk the South West Coast Path – 630 miles through Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. The Salt Path is the true story of that walk – the challenges Raynor and Moth faced, the people they met and the things they learnt along the way. Once Morris Gleitzman Morris Gleitzman’s series follows a Jewish boy called Felix in Poland during the Second World War. Felix runs away from an orphanage in search of his parents, who disappeared several years before. Along the way, he befriends a girl called Zelda, and receives help from various people he meets. As you’d expect, the story is harrowing at times, but it’s also funny, uplifting and impossible to put down. This one will stay with you for a very long time. The Dark Between Stars: Poems Atticus Atticus has become something of a social media sensation over the last couple of years. His latest book, The Dark Between Stars, is out this month. The poems cover themes such as living with purpose, loneliness, and the highs and lows of a life welllived. Each poem is just a few lines long (some are a single line) and many of them are illustrated or accompanied by a photograph. Several of Atticus’s poems are also available at www.instagram.com/atticuspoetry.

Fantastically Great Women Who Made History Kate Pankhurst A follow-on from Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, this children’s book includes stories about a diverse range of women, from Boudicca to Harriet Tubman. The tales are engaging, fun to read and brought to life with colourful illustrations. Each story only takes a few minutes to read, so this is a perfect book to read with your child at bedtime. You might just learn something new yourself. Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found Cheryl Strayed Wild became an international bestseller back in 2013, and was made into a film adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon. If you missed both, add the book to your wish list today. After losing her mother at 22, Cheryl fell into a downward spiral that saw her cheating on her husband and taking hard drugs. She ended up packing a backpack and setting off on a 1,100 mile hike from Mexico to Canada. Along the way she both found her way ‘back to the person I used to be’ and discovered the adult she wanted to become. Papier notebook www.papier.com Everyone needs a space to put their thoughts down, whether it’s for a simple to-do list, a gratitude diary, or ideas for a novel. Trello, Evernote and Hemingway are useful online resources, but if you prefer putting pen to paper, you can’t beat a notebook from Papier. More than 400 designs are available to choose from, each of which can be personalised with your name and the purpose of the book.
