Sue Trusler, Simplicity - Life can often become very busy, overloading our senses and causing tension. Simplicity is an empty space, touched with the simple beauty of merging colours. With no distraction it encourages a sense of calm and tranquillity. Complex leaves, stamens and petals are deliberately excluded, to allow the basic structure to stand alone. Less is often more, in this instance minimal visual stimulation encourages the mind to become calm and achieve a moment of stillness in a busy world.

Haley Barclay, Bloom - This painting is the first in my series I’m calling “Bloom.” It’s all about the way we grow and change during our journey. This one is about changing your perspective and removing negativity and toxicity from your life. By doing so you can blossom into the best version of yourself. Violet flowers have a lot of meanings but for me, the ones that stuck out while I was painting Bloom were awareness, inspiration and mental clarity.

Alexander Hadden, Protector - To explore the energetic blueprint of this image of a man and his dog I chose to focus on the naturalistic beauty of the connection rather than the intimidating presence of the characters. So, with vivid tones, the figures are unified in a burst of high expression and with the title of ‘Protector’ the audience is asked: who’s protecting whom?

The gently approaching wave through calm water and the soft evening glow of the setting sun provide a sense of peace and tranquility to the viewer. Violet Headley, Emergent - “Emergent” is an enigmatic digital art piece. It is whimsical and colorful and depicts a woman rising above the water line. Although her head is above water it is shrouded in a thin veil and you can not see her eyes. There are also numerous butterflies flitting around. If you look closer you can even see another figure joyously raising her arms. Is it joyous, transformative or sad? Symbolically the art represents the balance that is so necessary in life, the balance between dark and light, feelings and thoughts, work and play. It raises the question as to which is more important, the conscious or subconscious mind?

It serves as a visceral representation of the tragic reality of our deteriorating environment. Each layer of mixed media artwork reflects a facet of global environmental catastrophe—from global warming and plastic pollution to rampant degradation of water, air, and soil. The resulting natural disasters, symbolizing the Earth’s call for help, further compound this tragedy. In the series “Beauty of the Times,” I aim to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of diverse cultures through traditional women’s dress. Various customs and traditions converge to create a harmonious blend of enchanting beauty, with the evolution of time also evident in the women’s attire. Catarina Diaz, Amaranthine - This exuberant composition transports us to the Rococo period. The protagonist looks us straight in the eye, her hair flowing into flamboyant feathers, and wings in the shape of petals emerging from her back. This lightness, also present in the liberating butterfly, contrasts with the weight of the still life on which she rests her hands: a wooden mandolin, an iron chalice, amaranthine fruit and the powerful feline by her side. All these elements are traversed by sinuous golden lines, a deconstructed aureole closer to the contemporary universe. Because it is in moments of pause, almost always forced, that we find our true essence. Because only what is eternal can bring us the truth. The one thing I noticed though was the lack of representation and varying aspects of life. I was seeing nearly exclusively heterosexual based love scenes with predominantly white couples. I wondered where all of the artwork was that included people with different backgrounds and who did not fit the status quo. I wanted to see art which represented love that involved other characters who could relate to a wider audience. The colour and composition is something that happens organically. In this scenario, I wanted the characters to be at ease with each other so I portrayed them in cool blues and greens, colours often associated tranquillity but can also be sombre. Discover

The image is created a la prima with oil colors linking it to historical traditions of impressionists who depict eternal beauty of human and nature”.

Niller Svenningsen, Sun’s out, guns out - ‘‘Sun’s out, guns out” is a painting consisting of oil, acrylic + collage on canvas. It is a chaotic and humourous scene that depicts a vibrant and surreal landscape with a central focus on the sun and the iconic Pink Panther character. The sun in the painting is portrayed as a melting entity, with it’s fiery orange and yellow colours blending together in fluid and molten forms. This melting effect symbolizes the passage of time, the transient nature of existence, and the transformative power of the sun’s energy. It invites viewers to contemplate the impermanence of life and the continuous cycle of creation and destruction.

Rosemary Coan, Family Collage - I was hoping for one day to design something that would honor the original and forgotten settlers who boarded the New Netherland ship and landed on Noten Island which today is Governers Island which sits just below Manhattan and considered the birthplace of New York. During lockdown I spent time to investigate my ancestry and traced two of my descendants to being one of the first families aboard the New Netherland. In the collage artwork is my third great grandmother who married a Huguenot whose lineage of Walloons founded a town in New York in the 1600’s so going back farther brought me to Phillippe Dutrieux and wife Susanna. Have English characters in my lineage as well and more to come.

Lamees Farooq, Umaya - In my artwork, I captured the Emirati culture through the portrayal of an elderly Emirati woman adorned in traditional attire while gracefully balancing a water jar atop her head. In Emirati culture, we often refer to elderly women as “Umaya” out of respect and appreciation. Using a combination of gray and black watercolor paints and pen and ink, my intention was to portray the deep connection of heritage and tradition, as well as the rich history that is crucial to Emirati society. The delicate layers of watercolors allowed me to infuse the piece with dark hues, while the intricate details rendered in pen and ink provided depth to the woman’s attire and the jar of water. This artwork serves as a tribute to the resilience, strength, and timeless grace of Emirati women, who have long been the custodians of tradition and culture in the region.

It takes immense strength to reconstruct your identity after enduring years of traumatic experiences. Choosing to be alone rather than settling for toxic company is an act of bravery. Ethan Edwards, Runny - Portrays a mesmerizing portrait of a woman, her face adorned with a nosebleed. The artist has ingeniously employed colors inspired by the captivating synthwave aesthetic, reminiscent of the vibrant graphics and effects from the magnificent eighties era. Through a captivating blend of hues, the artwork encapsulates the woman’s pain and exhaustion, as they fade into the abyss that lies beyond her countenance. The luminous neon shades serve as a nostalgic homage to an era marked by excessive consumerism and ostentatious materialism, while simultaneously shedding light on the unknown individual’s misery. Ethan, the gifted artist, often delves into profound themes of cynical nihilism, depression, dehumanization, and the commodification of human existence. His artistic approach gracefully intertwines striking colors and sentimental echoes of the synthwave.

most significant contribution to the Seychelles art scene to date has been to sculpt a full-size bronze statue of a young Seychellois seafarer to commemorate the lives of all those Seychellois who have been lost to the sea since the settlement of the islands 250 years ago. This project, the brainchild of local personality Mr. Robert Grandcourt who hails from a family of distinguished mariners, will be erected on Praslin next to the new passenger jetty at Baie Ste Anne and will long remain as a monument to the seafaring spirit that epitomises the island lifestyle and also to Joseph Norah’s exceptional art for capturing it so eloquently for all eternity.

This painting of the couple embodies unwavering commitment and a steadfast determination to forge a shared existence. Standing upon the precipice of steps or a bridge, a noteworthy detail emerges: there is no solid ground or support for their next step. Erick Mota, Digress - This artwork depicts the contrast between our expectations for life and the reality that unfolds. While studying Freudian dream interpretations during my undergraduate years, I developed a fascination with the symbolic significance of owls. According to cultural and spiritual theories, owls represent change, intuition, knowledge, and wisdom. In the realm of dreams, they symbolize our subconscious intuition and a profound comprehension of life. Furthermore, owls are also associated with learning, protection, luck, hope, and transition. Amidst a transformative phase in my life, as I transitioned careers and pursued my psychology PhD, everything still felt tumultuous and uncertain. I turned to painting to express my emotions. I wanted to show both chaos and control. Owls represent intuition, so this painting is about trusting my intuition while navigating the chaos of life.

Erick Mota, Digress 2 - In the Digress series sequel, this painting delves deeper into the theme of life taking unexpected turns in directions we never anticipated or prepared for. During my psychology undergraduate studies, delving into Freudian dream interpretations ignited my curiosity about the symbolism of owls. Representing transformation, intuitive growth, knowledge, and wisdom, owls can be seen as symbols of the changes in our lives that seek protection, luck, hope, and transitional phases. According to Freud, seeing white owls in a dream indicates an encounter with someone who will drastically alter your world, eagerly anticipating your meeting. The emotional resonance of the dream serves to heighten our awareness of the profound impact it has on our waking reality, with the color reflecting the energy or emotions we are currently navigating.

Erick Mota, Digress 3 - “Digress 3” marks the latest addition to the ‘Digress’ series, symbolizing the unexpected twists and turns life takes, often diverging from our carefully laid plans. Owls, in various interpretations, symbolize transformative change, intuition, intellect, wisdom, and understanding. According to Freud, red owls appearing in dreams signify the expulsion of negativity from the subconscious mind. The presence of red owls in dreams reflects the influence of external opinions, the hectic pace of life, and the vulnerability of an individual, seeking unity amidst chaos. The color red signifies one’s energy and emotional essence, urging attention to seemingly insignificant decisions with profound implications. Red owls also embody ambition and passion, urging relentless pursuit of goals amidst life’s unpredictable course.

Seen through the lens of humanity, the conflict between righteousness and wickedness, light and shadow, and virtue and malevolence initiates with a clash of principles with God, a metaphysical force, set to emerge victorious in the battle against the instigator of wrongdoing in the grand scheme of “The Game of Life.”
