the central figure, a Puerto Rican woman with European features reminiscent of the traditional girl from Vermeer’s masterpiece. However, her presence transcends mere homage; she becomes a beacon of Nuyorican history and identity, her gaze and stance exuding strength and resilience.

Adjacent to the main figure, a traditional New York bodega cat rests peacefully on a shelf. This inclusion not only nods to the ubiquitous presence of feline companions in such establishments but also serves as a pointed commentary on recent political controversies. The cat’s role as a sleeping hunter of pests echoes the metaphorical idea of supporting those purging “undesirable” elements, subtly alluding to the political backlash faced by Goya in light of their support for Trump.

Through “Chica de la Perla,” Lee Lee La Cubana seamlessly weaves together layers of cultural references and social commentary, inviting viewers to contemplate the intersections of art, identity, and societal dynamics within the vibrant tapestry of New York City.”

Thank you to everyone involved.

“Chica de la Perla,” a captivating mixed media artwork by Lee Lee La Cubana, offers a vibrant homage to Johannes Vermeer’s iconic “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” reimagined within the setting of a New York City bodega. Nestled amidst the Goya aisle, this fusion of cultures and iconography invites viewers into a rich tapestry of symbolism and commentary.

ASHLEY MIAH

Artwork by this artist ranges between £200 - £2,600. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

Lee Lee La Cubana (Ashley

Miah) is an Afro-Latina artist and SHE.E.O. of The Culture Candy, hailing from the vibrant Lower East Side of New York City.

Her artistic focus lies in the realm of acrylic painting and design, where she skillfully brings to life contemporary pop-art pieces that reflect her unique experiences and perspectives. Using popculture, personal experiences, and Caribbean, Black And Latinx cultural references,

Ashley creates contemporary popart pieces that represent a moment in her journey that “also provokes a memory for the viewer. It is like having a conversation with the viewer, connecting our individual experiences through nostalgic response to imagery.

At the core of my art lies an empowering message about internal wealth and the recognition of one’s intrinsic value.” Symbolized by her signature, a diamond, Ashley’s artwork serves as a reminder of the inherent riches that reside within each individual. By spreading this message of internal wealth through her art, she aims to inspire others to embrace their own unique worth and potential.

SPREAD LOVE, 2024

Ashley’s artistic journey began during her early life when she independently immersed herself in art, ultimately leading her to attend the renowned “Fame School” Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art. Raised in the urban New York City environment, she was discouraged from taking specialized exams and seeking education outside of her zoned district, however she prevailed with determination to explore her talent. Continuing her dedication to the field, after high school she pursued her passion and

obtained a B.F.A. from Hunter College.

Having been born and raised in the vibrant Lower East Side of New York City, Ashley draws inspiration from her urban surroundings. She creates contemporary pop art paintings that cleverly incorporate elements of 90’s and current pop culture, femininity, hip hop and the unique urban culture of the city drawing from her experiences as a mixed race woman from a pregentrified NYC neighborhood.

At the heart of Ashley’s art lies a powerful message about internal wealth and the importance of recognizing one’s intrinsic value. Ashley believes that even the poor have riches, even the underdog is good enough, and even those labelled hopeless are hopeful. “There is richness in our culture, the values we pass down, the stories we tell, there’s wealth in surviving, in how we connect, we set styles they take for a reason, we build the vibrant cultural value in neighborhoods they gentrify, we season the foods they trend.”

6

In recognition of her community work and artistic expression, Ashley is currently an artist at Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea, and was honored as one of Forbes “30 Under 30” Local 2023 and Crain’s “20 in their 20s” in 2022.

Her creations are a compelling blend of her upbringing in urban New York City, the journey into womanhood, and the exploration of internal wealth and self-discovery. Ashley’s community work mirrors her artistic value with a mission for making space in the art scene for

creatives just like her. In 2020 she co-founded The Culture Candy, a minority women-owned NYCbased Art Organization dedicated to celebrating Culture, the arts, and underrepresented artists.

The Culture Candy’s vision is rooted in the belief that every artist, regardless of their background or identity, deserves equal opportunities to contribute to the larger art scene. The team is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages young minority,

female, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented creatives to pursue their artistic passions. Through a range of pop-up, art party events, gallery exhibitions, and public curations throughout NYC, The Culture Candy strives to empower these artists to embrace their uniqueness and challenge traditional boundaries in the art world. They also offer resources to artists through community programs, art-entrepreneurship coaching and online courses, and portfolio reviews. By nurturing their talents.

7

The Culture Candy aims to enrich our cultural landscape and promote diversity, equity, and representation in the arts. Ashley and her team believes that art has the power to transcend barriers and ignite meaningful conversations, sparking positive change in our communities.

“Together, by supporting living underrepresented artists, we will build a future where diversity thrives, and the arts become a unifying force that brings us all closer together #fortheculture”

As a founder of The Culture

Candy, and an up and coming Pop Artist, Lee Lee La Cubana (Ashley) uses her role as the proclaimed “SHE.E.O.’’ of her arts organization and her artistic career to encourage other women to take charge and demand space for their dream life. Ashley believes the traditional corporate American environment was not built for women, minorities and creatives to thrive. As an identifier of all three of those categories, she aims to lead an empowering work-life culture through her public endeavors as the head of an arts organization and an up and

coming artist. In every opportunity earned, Ashley has made room to reach a hand out for other underrepresented artists to step into spaces and open doors for a future of inclusion. “As women, we are all creators of life, we are all the SHE.E.O.’s in charge of our destiny’s, demanding respect and shining our light onto the world. Holding the doors open for other sisters to walk through with even more ease than the last.”

Michael Madden, Bucolic Passing - I live in the beautiful countryside of Southwestern Ontario, which is disappearing due to rapid urban development and sprawl. “Bucolic Passing” is a meditation on environments that have been and continue to be disrupted, re-formed and irreparably changed by human interference. This interrupted landscape is juxtaposed to the presence of an untamable cloudscape. The work is rendered with coloured pencils directly upon a birch ply wood panel. The wood grain, like a palimpsest, is visible and integral: the medium remains on the surface of the harder wood fibres and allows light to “occupy” the “in-between.

Claudia Lowry, Chameleon - This painting is based on a tribal woman from the Amazon rainforest. I love that people can be so integrated with their natural environment and wanted to portray this in my painting. The name ‘Chameleon’ came to mind when thinking of how well some of the tribes people can blend in with their surroundings in the rainforest. I included some native flowers that were indigenous to the amazon such as the ‘Angels Trumpet’ flower for the beauty of the habitat and also the carnivorous ‘Monkey Cup’ to indicate the hostility present in some of the rainforest’s inhabitants.

She admires Frida’s unwavering devotion to her Mexican indigenous heritage, evident in her cuisine, attire, interior design, and vibrant, fervent artwork. Utilizing Frida’s sketches and letters to Diego Rivera from “The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self Portrait,” Kara meticulously covered the canvas before painting Frida’s portrait. There is no foundation, it’s like the body is stepping away from its shadow, it is like peering in the mirror with eyes closed, I would touch my face and draw my portrait with my fingers, stripping the impurities of my portrait covered in paint and debris and in stillness wonder why the material is heavy on the head. What I feel is happening through my art is the distillation of the facade and the reveal of the complicated person beneath. This portrait spoke to me loud and clear while I was painting her... in a gruff and confident voice, she declared ‘You can’t tell me anything I don’t know, I’ve seen it all’ So don’t try to pull anything off on her. Ryan Ford, anti-shy - “I use art as an outlet to express how I feel at a specific period or time of my life which helps me deal with anything that gets thrown at me.” Ryan Ford, an artist hailing from Bristol, channels his thoughts and emotions into captivating portrait drawings. His latest venture, aptly named “unapologetic,” delves into the realm of unapologetic behavior. The centerpiece, “anti-shy,” beautifully captures the essence of embracing one’s true self, urging us to shed our shyness and conquer any obstacles that come our way. This powerful message is further reinforced by the interplay of light and darkness, as well as Ryan’s distinctively bold and textured strokes.

Daniela Reis, The gravitacional Power - People behold only what lies within themselves. This enigmatic “self”the Great Unfamiliar, the depths of the looking glass - remains repressed and silenced, in order to coexist with the prevailing “willing suspension of disbelief.” The relinquishment of the “essence of existence” mentioned by Merleau-Ponty, serves to uphold the equilibrium and coherence (rather than the substance) of all things. Art serves as an aperture, creating a space for us to encounter the genuine essence of existence. We exist obscured, bound by societal norms and the overwhelming circumstances of our everyday lives. Art exposes the abyss, the culmination of the mirror’s reflection, and the myriad possibilities and connections that lie beyond.

Tenny Lo, Blue sanity - Blue sanity and melancholy are two states of mind that often go hand in hand. Blue sanity refers to a state of mental well-being and balance, where one’s thoughts and emotions are coherent and rational. It is a state of being mentally healthy and stable. While blue sanity and melancholy may seem contradictory, they can coexist within an individual. It is possible to maintain a general sense of mental wellbeing and balance (blue sanity) while experiencing moments of sadness or melancholy. These emotions are a natural part of the human experience and can contribute to personal growth, introspection, and creativity. Discover More - Instagram: @tennymix_art

Gaia means “Goddess of Earth”. I painted a blooming flower. The flower is blooming, transitioning, offering life and nourishment. This painting represents me from where I was and what l’m becoming. Inbal Kristin, Into the wild - In life, there are moments when our eyes capture something truly remarkable. This piece came to life after I witnessed a bird perched on a branch amidst a lush backdrop of plants. I was captivated, feeling as though I had stepped into a magical realm. I seized the moment with my camera, and upon returning home, I digitally transformed the image to reflect the enchanting scene my eyes had beheld: a bird gracefully perched on a branch, overlooking a vibrant and fantastical garden. Preserving this moment was paramount to me, so I rendered the branches and the bird in a solid color, creating a striking contrast against the vivid and textured background. This contrast serves to accentuate the ambiance I sought to convey.

Rajul Shah, REVIVAL - As an internationally acclaimed artist, my work is influenced by the concept of kintsugi as a powerful metaphor for the human experience and the chakra system, which represents the energy centers within our being. Similar to the way kintsugi restores broken pottery, the balancing and healing of our chakras is instrumental in addressing the energy imbalances within us. Each chakra is associated with a specific color, symbolizing various aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. For instance, the color orange corresponds to the 2nd chakra, Svadisthana, which governs creativity, joy, prosperity, and pleasure. When this energy center is unbalanced, it can lead to a sense of discord in these vital aspects of our lives.

Zhongqi He, Eat+ - EAT+ is a book binding project that challenges the authenticity of printed media. In China, dietary therapy is widely practiced and extensively discussed in books and papers. However, it is important to note that much of the common knowledge regarding food supplements is inaccurate. Despite this, books hold a significant level of credibility for most people, leading them to unquestioningly accept the information they contain. EAT+ visually presents the traditional Chinese dietary therapy found in books and papers. I carefully selected several common food therapies and calculated the precise daily intake required for each to be effective. Next, I transformed this valuable data into the number of pages and skillfully utilized.

Sarah Hurn, Wonky Vessels - A captivating mixed media composition featuring collage, paint, and oil pastel on paper. The graceful contours of the pottery I collect and my enduring passion for patterns, stemming from my previous career as a textile designer, serve as my artistic inspiration. Following my graduation, I thrived as a freelance textile designer for 7 years. Subsequently, my diverse career path has led me to roles as a gift shop owner, embalmer, and prison officer, with intermittent ventures into painting to satisfy my creative yearnings. After a life-altering car accident forced me to leave my job, a lengthy and ongoing recovery process eventually enabled me to resume painting. Since relocating to Scotland 2 years ago, I have participated in 4 exhibitions.

Stephanie Chatila, Untitled (Conflict in Space Series) - Part of the ‘Conflict in Space’ series, this artwork unveils my art studio as a vivid reflection of conflicting techniques and colors, embodying the psychological journey of an artist confronting a blank canvas. The piece captures the intense process of attacking the emptiness with emotionally charged strokes in the background, illustrating the artist’s struggle of implementing creativity onto the white canvas. The bold, defining strokes in the foreground narrate the story of the art studio, each mark resonating with

Eliana Sá, Free - It is interesting to delve into a world in which we simply hover and flow in space where there is no time. In another dimension in which everything is energy in dynamic movement. On a journey or in moments, it is when wandering that a mark of freedom and lightness is left. In a universe where forms are reduced, light emerges between patches of color, highlighting its brightness in an area of contrasts. This fluidity takes us. Alternately, between stagnant moments, there is an urgent gesture that gives life with the necessary force, creating movement. In moments of expansion, the gesture gives of itself spontaneously. The paint itself, in its different thicknesses, plays into this balance, which is the inner world that each person carries with them.

Alexandru Crișan, Thoughts (detail) - Alexandru Crișan (b. Bucharest, Romania 1978) is a visual artist interested in the existential complementarity of objective and nonobjective forms of expression. As far as the latter is to be unpacked, his “counter-professional” career in photography began in 2008; his paintings stand, for almost three decades, as the most intimate, borderline atavistic, acts of divulgence. Assuming that taxonomy is of any consequence, he is partial to fine-art photography and Abstract Expressionism. The eclectic nature his projects is, therefore, a given. When it comes to the acrylic heart-chambers work, uncanny sentiment of intimacy that gradually found its safe house within the lyrical abstractions spectrum.

Leigh Witherell, Arul “We are the Story” - Grieving fathers often find themselves feeling lost and isolated during their grief. The loss of a child is an unimaginable pain, and fathers may experience a range of emotions that they struggle to express or understand. Society often expects men to be stoic and strong, which can make it difficult for them to seek support or share their feelings openly. They may feel isolated in their grief, as others may not fully comprehend the depth of their sorrow. Additionally, fathers may feel lost as they navigate a new reality without their child. The combination of these factors can leave grieving fathers feeling disconnected, alone, and unsure of how to move forward.

C Dragon, GOD COULDNT FORGiVE - Is a compelling piece that forms part of the romantic painting thesis titled “LOVERGRLLL.” The artwork captures the intense emotional passion of its subjects, symbolized by the fire that emanates from the focal point of the painting. This piece delves into the anguish of unrequited love while also portraying elements of deep passion. Drawing parallels to the mythology of Goddess Kali, the subject in “GOD COULDNT FORGiVE” holds her lover’s severed head, akin to the heads that Kali wears as a symbol of karma. The fire that engulfs the severed head represents the need to release and move on, yet the subject remains tragically attached, burning her hands as she leans in to kiss her departed lover.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s “The Modulor,” NHBH lacks a ‘heart,’ so I added it to play with contrasts. is a tribute to the great alchemical work, an allegory of royalty of human consciousness. A broader consciousness, free from the limitations of the mind that prevent full self-realization. In this path of initiation, the darkness, in its nocturnal blue colours, was not opposite to sunlight, but contiguous and necessary. There could not be the solar eye of reason without the nocturnal wisdom gaze of not-consciousness. The darkness in alchemy was the descent into the underworld, not a punishment but the gift of losing all certainties and being reborn to a new life like a Phoenix.

Luminous Transparencies explores colour relationships and our perceptions of colour. It focuses on the nuances of colour placement, and how the appearance of one colour can be altered by other colours surrounding it. This sculptural piece was made using 6 different colours of perspex, each with varying degrees of transparency. By viewing the piece at different angles, the appearance of the perspex in the centre changes. It becomes a lens that uses colour and natural light to alter it’s appearance. Monica Maja Richardson, Friday I’m in Love - This artwork holds immense significance for the artist, as it exudes joy, vitality, love, and vibrant colors. The title “Friday I’m in Love” is a nod to the renowned song by The Cure. Music is an integral part of Monica’s creative process, a constant source of inspiration, with many of her paintings being named after a song. Upon completing this painting on a Friday night, the title felt fitting and perfectly encapsulated the essence of the piece.

Sheryl Ruth Kolitsopoulos, Boy In Big Blue Chair - I’ve always been moved by the beauty I see in life. My hand-painted lithograph, “Boy In Big Blue Chair,” captures a boy’s yearning to play outdoors, even when nestled in a comfortable chair. Drawing is my passion and the cornerstone of my art, whether employed alone or in tandem with painting. My deep connection to the subject matter guides my artistic choices in terms of line, movement, composition, value, and color. It’s all intertwined. Rachel Borntrager, I’m Staying - My work is line and color driven abstract paintings in which I use my own breath and nervous system to guide the brush in my hand. I lay raw canvas on the ground and then over the course of a few days or weeks, add layers of mixed acrylic, ink, charcoal, and oil pastels. The lines and colors take on the responsibility of language. This technique prioritizes my body’s way of making meaning instead of my brain’s. The result is a visual expression and discovery of fuller memories I hold in my body.

engel hramm, Abstraction du corps 2 [Body Abstraction 2] - The series Body A(bs)ttraction represents an abstraction of the body until it reaches a new graphic state composed of the median lines of the various planes of the artist’s body. Like Duchamp in his Nu descendant un escalier, n°2, engel hramm breaks free of artistic and bodily constraints to propose a new way of representing the body that goes beyond the static aesthetics of the nude and the individual relationship to the nude, emphasizing the universal human machinery that is the source of progress.

Charlene Walker, Firewalker - This artwork is part of a series that explores the effects of climate change using symbolic landscapes. My recent creations delve into the current truths reflected in the Australian terrain. Bushfires, inherent to Australian life, have now become a global occurrence. Our extensive influence is profoundly affecting the Earth’s climate and ecosystems. The strain on the environment and the constant threat of bushfire, as well as the disregard for vulnerable lands, are recurring themes in my recent body of work.

Christa Strauß, Memoki Teshikamireku - The symbol of peace is embodied by the dove. The goddess embodies the essence of gratitude. Mushrooms symbolize longevity. The dragon signifies luck, wealth, intelligence, and virtue. The crane symbolizes vigilance and the potential for change. The third eye, or 3.Auge, represents elevated consciousness. In my art, every element holds significance. Each motif is intended to communicate something to the observer. The overarching theme is global peace. Respect and the unity of religions and cultures are paramount.

Robyn Ivy, One In A Million - This piece was created as a statement about the challenges women face in any industry. Growing up, I thought Aaliyah was everything- talented, beautiful, kind, and independent. It was hard for me to accept the lack of control she had in her life. Someone told me I made her look angry, but as women, I think we all feel that way when hitting the wall of misogyny, repeatedly. For me, this piece is about reclaiming the strength we may feel we lost over the years.

Anna Yakusheva, “And you are you?” - This piece is part of a series titled “Journey to Inner Freedom”. Through this work, my aim is to emphasize the significance of resisting the lure of ego and the mind’s projections, breaking free from dependence on external opinions, societal norms, illusions, and the artificial constructs of our world. It serves as a reminder of the importance of detaching actions from emotional biases, disregarding external critics and internal attitudes, and acting authentically, rather than succumbing to self-deception and betrayal in pursuit of acceptance and validation. It sheds light on the illusory nature of our comfort zones and the ways in which we betray ourselves by comparing our lives to others.
