Malikom, La Marinière - “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards” - Søren Kierkegaard. I choose this quote because La Marnière shows a woman looking forward unfazed by the stripes that cover her body like ropes or prison bars that want to tie her down or chain her. The stripes are bent because they follow the direction at which the lady is looking. In this still portrait, they symbolise a movement. La Marinière is a French word designating shirts with blue and white stripes famously worn by sailors. It also symbolizes French culture and style.

MILNE

Milne Publishing is proud to present Artist Talk Magazine issue 27. This issue is dedicated to celebrating all aspects of art.

Everyone featured within this issue have given interesting, in-depth, honest accounts about themselves, their work, views and ideas. In addition to the amazing images of the work they have produced, which I know you the reader will enjoy and be inspired by.

Thank you to everyone who entered our open call.

The cover of this issue is by Erick Mota, titled Brain Vs. Heart: Round 1.

“You’ve heard of the saying ‘the heart rules the head’ but in real life, things are never that simple. Every day we are forced to make decisions between our emotions and practicality, and I’ve depicted that war here.

In this unique artwork, you’ll notice both the brain and the heart are tied in a boxing match. There is no winner in this battle, showing that they are both worthy foes – each the other’s equal canceling out the successes of the other part and each other’s nemesis, destined to fight for eternity.

When I first decided to create this piece, I imagined it with the feel of a real boxing match with

a crowd, advertisements, and a referee. But then I decided against that to provide more meaning to the artwork. In every individual’s battle of the brain versus heart, there is no crowd, no advertisements, and we are our own referee.

It’s “you versus you,” as you decide between a problem-solving approach versus an emotiondriven approach in handling things.

This painting is titled “Brain Vs. Heart: Round 1,” and will be an ongoing series with Round 2 coming next, in a different setting, showing the ongoing battle that we face.

Each piece within the series will never show a winning side, but rather the beginning of the battle, leaving it up to the viewer to determine their own winner. There will also be a secret element in each one, with ‘Round 1’ featuring the heart wearing the shorts of Mike Tyson and the brain wearing the shorts of the late Muhammed Ali. ”

Thank you to everyone involved.

ERICK MOTA - BRAIN VS. HEART: ROUND 1

ERICK MOTA

Artwork by this artist ranges between £2,100 - £22,800. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

I consider myself a visionary artist with an approach to the canvas fueled by a profound philosophical and introspective understanding of the human experience. With each brush stroke, I invite viewers on a journey through the diverse facets of humanity, delving into the raw power of emotion and the shaping influence of culture on our personalities. Through my art, I aim to fearlessly explore the complexities of the world around me, transcending the boundaries of visual expression to create pieces that serve as powerful testaments to my unrelenting quest for knowledge and self-discovery.

My artistic repertoire is a rich tapestry of influences, woven together from the threads of personal experiences, my passion for psychology and organizational leadership, and my unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of those around me. As I continue to refine my unique voice within my craft, I remain steadfast in my commitment to helping others and leaving a lasting impression on the world through my art.

I was born and raised raised in Staten Island, NY, which is one of five boroughs that make up New York City. I was surrounded

by creativity and encouraged to nurture my own artistic talents.

‘Introduction to Oil Painting’ class at 22 that I found my true calling. I fell in love with the medium, quickly outgrowing the limited palette the professor wanted students to have and invested in more colors and brushes. My skill level impressed my professor, who encouraged me to take intermediate and advanced oil painting classes, both of which I aced, solidifying a passion and purpose as an artist.

My educational background is extensive, as I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, a Masters of Arts in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, an audio engineering degree from music school, and I am currently earning a doctorate in Organizational Leadership. My artistic training is largely selfdirected, showcasing natural talent. I always recognize the importance of continuous learning in different art forms to broaden an understanding of the styles and media that I work with, including studying portrait drawing weekly at a school in New York City where I draw live nude models each week.

My father, who is also an artist helped cultivate a deep passion for learning, reading, writing, drawing, music, sports, and video games. Even at an early age, as an introspective and inquisitive child, I had a fearless spirit, often taking on new challenges, like making comic books with my best friend, which we sold for pocket change. My summer vacations were mostly spent traveling to Venezuela and California, further enriching my appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and the importance of family. With a vivacious personality, I often made many friends, some of whom I have remained close with since preschool, even though I was often teased for being a class clown or talking too much in school.

Despite any early creative endeavors, it wasn’t until I took an

My studio is located in my home in Freehold, NJ. My large easels and large amounts of supplies have filled the space. My creative process is one of precision and intentionality. With an industrial air purifier at my disposal to neutralize strong fumes, I am able to work with oil paints in a seamless and effective manner. As the beats of hip-hop and R&B fill the air, I enter my “creative zone” where I am free to explore the intricacies of my craft.

Before making a single brush stroke, I usually spend a great deal of time researching my subject, gathering references, and observing, studying, and capturing the subject in all its glory. This process sets the foundation for my oil paintings, as I meticulously consider the size of the canvas, the colors I want to use, the ideas I want to convey, and any hidden details I want to include in my work.

With a seasoned approach, I meticulously prepare each canvas, layering it with gesso and sketching lightly before bringing the artwork to life. I utilize quick-dry sprays for specific areas, or even fastdrying oil paints at times. My process is optimized for efficiency

without sacrificing quality. Once completed, each piece is signed and protected with a UV sealant, ensuring its longevity for generations to come.

conventional norms. With a newfound sense of confidence, I create art for myself and invite the world to experience it on their own terms. Openly discussing the underlying meanings behind each piece, whether through social media or in person at art galleries, I invite audiences to delve deeper into my work and uncover its hidden treasures. The evolution of my artistic expression is an ongoing journey of self-discovery, marked by a growing confidence and vulnerability in sharing my vision with the world.

As my body of work expands, I have found a sense of direction that guides my creative pursuits. My versatility as an artist shine through in each painting, each one its own story, with a range of subjects that showcase my artistic range. I like to make my art stand out for its innovative use of psychological elements that evoke emotions and engage the viewer, whether it’s how titles of paintings are weaved together, the imagery, and the positioning of subjects to create timeless pieces that touch the soul.

As I continue to refine my craft, I take calculated risks to push boundaries and challenge

knowledge and intellect through rigorous study and analysis. With a presence in many prestigious galleries in New York City, I always look for opportunities to expand in order to make a larger presence. I have done the Art Expo NY and will be a part of Art Basel in Miami, Florida later this year. I have amassed a noteworthy collection of international awards, and some work was also honored with a momentous digital display in the heart of Times Square, New York City, courtesy of Artist Talk Magazine.

In my quest for artistic innovation, I have recently ventured into the realm of digital art, crafting mesmerizing NFT animations that elevate paintings to new heights. Staying ahead of the curve, I actively explore virtual galleries and art markets to stay relevant in the art world. I have started bringing each painting to life in the form of captivating, animated NFTs. To see works like the dynamic “The Game of Life,” come to life as an animation provides even more depth for the viewer to experience on the NFT-platform, Open Sea.

Through personal interactions with art aficionados at gallery exhibitions, I relish the opportunity to delve into the motivations behind my pieces and share my creative vision. I carefully curate professional partnerships, from art coaches to clients, to ensure that their perspectives align with my artistic pursuits. I want my artwork to stand out for my fearless approach to experimentation and constant evolution. I have always admired a quote by the words of the late Tupac Shakur, “You either evolve or you disappear,” which reminds me to constantly push the boundaries of my practice and strive to improve with each piece.

I am a true believer in the transformative power of art. To me, it’s a tool for self-expression, a bridge between cultures, and a

window into the soul. I see art as a way for people to tap into their inner artists and communicate emotions that words can’t capture. I want my art to embody my dedication to capturing the human experience. With tireless effort, I continually hone my skills and take on new challenges, driven by a desire to grow as an artist, striving to better myself,

sharpening my skills and embracing growth. Whether through timeless paintings, thought-provoking digital art, or words that I try to inspire others with, I want to leave a lasting impact on the art world and those who encounter my work.

SUNFLOWERS ON THE BEACH

Rouven Kurz, Cat Walk - Cat Walk is a candid street photo that captures a striking moment of beauty and mystery. A female person is backlit and is just shown as a silhouette walking across strips of light on a dark pavement, creating a sense of intrigue and enigma. Her posture reminds one of a model, as she confidently strides forward with grace and elegance. The light strips look like a crosswalk, suggesting a connection between the urban environment and the fashion world. The massive negative space makes room for imagination, inviting the viewer to wonder about the person’s identity, destination and story. Cat Walk celebrates the beauty of everyday life and the power of light and shadow.

Jitrachote White, Connection - This is a painting of myself and my son. I wanted this painting to convey the connection between me and my son. The warm colours both signify the warmth I feel towards him as well as the idea that we are connected through our bodies. The softness and lost edges also emphasise this idea. The suggestion of a window behind us suggest the idea of looking forwards to the unknown future.

During the first wave of the pandemic, my husband was redeployed to work in ITU doing long hours and was not able to spend much time with my son. I chose complimentary colours for them which is repeated throughout the painting to convey the harmony and peace he felt during the time they had together as well as the feeling of uncertainty.

Efthymios P. Pournaras, Breaking the riddle - A beautiful young girl, characterized by an enigmatic gaze, stares out at the viewer of the artwork as she gracefully rests upon an organic geometric structure. In the background, plain figures with barely discernible features acrobat on taut ropes, desperately trying to keep their balance and maintain the painting’s aesthetic. Which was your first thought, when you saw the composition? How did you interpret the figures and their attitude based on the detail and their size on the canvas?

Elena Masrour, If God was a DJ. - In the second painting, “If the God Was a DJ,” I depicted a woman as a DJ to spark important conversations surrounding gender roles, equality, and the rights of women. This painting is about the limitations imposed by Iran’s Islamic law, particularly regarding women’s participation in music. According to Islamic beliefs, women singing, playing music, or being a DJ is against spiritual morality. Through the painting, I challenge the restrictions imposed by Iran’s Islamic law and urge viewers to consider the value of women’s rights, and criticize societal norms and Islamic fundamentalism.

Elena Masrour, Biking in a sunny day - Women’s cycling has recently become a sensitive subject among religious organizations in Iran. Bikes are not available at bicycle stations in Iran for women or children under 15. The government’s main concern is Hijab, leading to women’s headscarves being a hindrance to good visibility while they are riding a motorcycle or bicycle. This painting is based on the story of my friend Maryam who explained how she was fined by the police while cycling to the university on the way home.

I particularly like to capture the interiority of faces and the intensity of an attitude or movement, with a minimum of means. Getting to the heart of the matter with just a few strokes of the pencil. The choice of tones and flat tints is essential, helping to create an atmosphere and ideas that suddenly take shape and color. “Love is like a mantra” is a drawing about an universal feeling that permeates every minute of our lives.

Sweet world of illusions and dreams...how it is sometimes needed to plunge into it, forgetting about reality. This painting tells the story about erasing the boundaries between the real and the fictional world. It is interesting because, on the one hand, it embodies the world of illusions through pink patterns and blurry outlines, on the other hand a clear and plain shape of the opposite cold shade of bright blue is given in contrast to further emphasize the side of illusions.

Mahboobeh Shahnavaz, UAE to the future - Heart of drawing is a boat in the middle which indicates United Arab Emirates map while converting to an Arabian horse, because I wanted to show how fast UAE is going to the future and also keep Emirates drawing like its map. The horse is running towards right side of the canvas which shows the future,in the middle present and left side past. I put a thermometer on the earth to show the importance of making decision for global warming. There are some intangible heritage of the UAE in my drawing like a falcon on a branch, Arabian coffee and sadu as a camel accessory.

Olga Fried, Dune - “Dune” is a part of the long-term project “Luxury and discipline” that focuses on life in Dubai through a postmodern lens, specifically referencing concepts developed by Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault. Oksana Kolosyuk, Leopard - A penetrating stare from the painting asks: What are you? Food or danger? So many animals are now on the brink of extinction. Perhaps after some time we will only know them from books and illustrations. The leopard has always amazed me with its beauty and courage. It has many names: jaguar, puma, mountain lion, snow leopard and genetically confirmed by scientists that this is one and the same animal. Today, through the fault of humans, this predator has practically disappeared from the face of the earth. And with my work, I want to preserve the memory of it for future generations and draw attention to the topic of ecology and that we must take care of each other as we live in a symbiotic world.

Irina Metz, Woke Up Too Early For Love, Rêves Français / French Dreams series - Pursue of Happiness in my art becomes a key to inner and outer Balance. “Woke Up Too Early For Love” compliments French Dreams Series (Rêves Français). It bears the lightness of “art de vivre” that lives in the air of Parisian sudios, Provencale fields and French Riviera mornings. The first glimpse of new day’s dawn as seen by morning people just before the world wakes up, aftertaste of sweet dreams and expectation of upcoming magic. The painting is created a la prima with oil colours linking my art to historical traditions of impressionists who depict eternal beauty of human and nature. I am re-thinking their heritage to create my path towards conscious pursue of Happiness. Discover

Niller Svenningsen, Sun’s out, guns out - “Sun’s out, guns out” is a painting consisting of oil, acrylic + collage on canvas. It is a chaotic and humorous scene that depicts a vibrant and surreal landscape with a central focus on the sun and the iconic Pink Panther character. The sun in the painting is portrayed as a melting entity, with its fiery orange and yellow hues blending together in fluid and molten forms. This melting effect symbolizes the passage of time, the transient nature of existence, and the transformative power of the sun’s energy. It invites viewers to contemplate the impermanence of life and the continuous cycle of creation and destruction.

Pedro Sousa Louro, Walking around my neighbourhood - Pedro Sousa Louro’s work immediately shows a textural tangibility. Earthy, material-focused, natural beauty is found in the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore, geometry plays a crucial role here, as clean white lines converse with blocks of muted colour. There is an almost archival, collage-like approach to applying materials and hues. It is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the archaeologist role, unearthing forgotten history layers. Educated at Chelsea College of Arts, Sousa Louro is among the most talked-about LGBTQ artists. Pedro has collectors around the globe, including Europe, the Middle East, India, Australia, the US, Russia and South America.

Maggie Bjorklund, Velvet Grass - I create to envision and challenge conceptions of body and spirit. My work questions how physical and intangible bodies interact in the natural world, and what ideas this unveils. With acrylic paint on canvas, I make ethereal landscapes that depict a “third place” between the spiritual and physical. In each piece, I employ visible, textured brushstrokes and layered compositions, balancing descriptive and ambiguous forms. Velvet Grass was inspired by the wild grasses behind my home. Their persistent perennial growth, the way they dance in the wind, and their collective beauty all reflect spirit. The piece depicts this realm beyond the physical while meditating on the holy interaction between body and nature.

Eric Paxton, Razing Cane - “Razing Cane” was inspired by an 80 acre conflagration that engulfed a sugar cane field in the Caribbean island of St. Croix. On controversial “sugar plantation” land, a prolonged drought had elevated the risk of fire, intentional or not, that combusted into a fast moving inferno, threatening neighbors, homes & fire crews. I watched the ember storm of fire brands & reflected on the history of the place, from a pre Columbian native settlement, to the generations of enslaved Africans forced into field labor. The painting conjures an Earth Spirit, observing the human energies surrounding such an impactful fire burn event. Frederiksted, U.S. Virgin Islands. 50x80cm/olpribri/

Lee Lee La Cubana, Frida’s Joy - Frida Kahlo is a well known inspiration amongst pop-culture and minority artists, however she would not favor the idolization of her image. Frida was a whimsical, sensual, promiscuous, and passionate young woman studying photography after her father, until the age of 18 when she got hit by a bus. The accident crippled her greatly yet Diego Rivera, a well known painter and older professor she was having an affair with, agreed to marry her. With a decrease in mobility, she was no longer pursuing photography and found inspiration in painting, learning what she can from her husband and extending herself to his network. Representative of the people’s perspectives. The subject matter is reflective of the duality of the everchanging  signs of our times. On one hand, we have the surreal, the fantastical imagery, revealed in the disguised attire. This is evident by the contrasting elements  of stripes verses red roses. On the other hand, we have  the awaken, the clairvoyant as expressed by the one eye. The one eye is the third eye. It communicates telepathically. It offers spiritual enlightenment. Elizabeth Coleman, stress / tension - Elizabeth Coleman’s artwork explores the intricate relationship between the human condition, emotional evocation, and the beauty of everything around us. The human condition binds us to one another and the raw experiences we share - grief, despair, and hope. Each person has their chains, and yet, chains are so permanent; instead, for some, they are vines of thorns. It’s not until they have tightened and grown that we notice the cuts and scars they produce. Then, may we seek relief, reprieve. And, even as we stretch and pull away - the struggle becomes more painful.

Echo Park Reflections was taken while exploring the area around a lake and then playing with color, shape and form on a computer, resulting in a painterly looking composition abstracting the recognizable image into something of more pattern and design with overlays of digital reworking, almost effecting a silkscreen quality. The flipped image reflection catches the viewer off guard but familiar lines and branches bring the viewer back to some sense of reality.

She depicts fruits and ceramics fragments, focusing the viewer’s attention on the most vibrant details such as the velvety texture inside a fruit or the fragment of a ceramic revealing a pattern. In this way, Emna rehabilitates these elements of everyday life that are not always perceived at their true value.

NINA BORNE, BAREFOOT ON THE GRASS - Is an abstract artwork that combines pink, pastel, and neon colors to convey the fragility and independent life I feel. The soft and vibrant color palette creates a delicate and energetic atmosphere. In this artwork, I have used different techniques to achieve interesting visual effects and textures. The strokes are smooth and fluid, creating organic shapes that intertwine and overlap with each other. The pink and pastel colors provide a sense of softness and delicacy, while the touches of neon add an element of surprise and vitality. But so gentle.

Erin Derby, No. 287 - Eternally drawn to botanical subjects, No. 287 is the latest in my series Reimagining Nature & The Nocturnals that celebrates the beauty, fragility, and vibrancy of nature, capturing fleeting moments of natural life in vivid detail. I aim to create timeless images that convey a sense of awe and wonder when interacting with the natural world. My work is inspired by the spiritual, therapeutic, and aesthetic significance plants can have in our lives. I strive to evoke an emotional response from my audience by capturing the delicate, ever-changing beauty of botanical life. My technique involves using daylight and colorful surfaces to capture everything in-camera, and then creating a mandala-like effect.

Mark Jeffrey Weiss, Untitled Gaudi Sketch - The painting began as an abstracted landscape, constructed over many months. The forms evolved with each trip to the canvas, applying rich, opaque layers of oil. Over the course of development, I drew from recent experiences while traveling in Spain. These memories helped shape the final composition, leading to a piece that reflects my journey in art and geography. Look for me and other works, on view in Miami, during Art Basel week.

Smaranda Sîrca, Life - I did this painting when I was fifteen in 2010 or 2011, before moving alone to another town to go to acting high school and taking a ten years break from intensive painting. Here, I was making sense of my feelings, uncertainty, anger, pain, hopelessness and wonder but also hope, bliss and life force, power regarding questions about my life and what I’m gonna do. I was painting with maturity the turmoil and peace of life changing and the hope of better things to come seen by 15 year old me. I added gold foil in summer 2022. This painting reunites 15 year old me with 27 year old me, a continuous soul.

Melanie Berardicelli, Sir Stephen - Devastated after the untimely passing of my older brother in 2020, I searched for answers to my questioning faith and comfort for my never-ending grief. It was by fate that I stumbled upon Paul Koudounaris’s book, Heavenly Bodies. I was enthralled with the glittering Roman Martyr Catacomb Saints; there lied the promise of the riches of heaven, and an answer to honoring the dead. I admired the dedication of the nuns who bejeweled these skeletal remains with their own gemstones. Through painting and embroidery, I re-imagine what these saints looked like during their lifetimes, giving them back their identities and re-christening them after the heroic people that I have known in my life.
