MAY EVENTS

It’s a Good Day for the Blues

Through May 23

Though you might not believe it at first glance, Gail Morris is predominantly a landscape painter. In her first book, well-known artist Wolf Kahn describes her work as “spare and elegant.” Often compared to Mark Rothko, Morris works with color to distill the landscape to its visual and emotional essence. Typically scraping more paint off the canvas than she leaves on, her seemingly simple use of color is truly complex in nature, as she decides how to layer her paints to create different hues, producing a pleasant blend of imagery. This show at Bonner David Galleries, incorporating the inspiration of the ocean and music, presents her latest fusion of hues in a geometric style. https://bonnerdavid.com

Yeehaw!

Wondering about the name of the new restaurant that opened in Tempe called Feta Cowboy? The locale’s focus is a blend of the bold flavors of the Mediterranean and the Southwest—so it all makes delicious sense.

Feta Cowboy offers a fresh, in-house crafted menu with customizable, build-your-own options that cater to every taste. The fast-casual destination is perfect for a quick bite on the go or as a place where you can relax and unwind with a glass of wine.

“At Feta Cowboy, the food and flavors are a delicious manifestation of our beautiful American gastronomical experience

and the interconnectedness of global cuisine,” says Bassel Osmani, co-founder. “Healthy nutrition and layers of flavor come together in unique ways to create simply amazing food.”

Here is where rustic flatbreads meet tortillas, shawarmas meet asada, and kebabs meet barbecue. The menu includes signature bowls, burritos, and pitas, as well as a variety of dips and seven flavorful sauces, including Zhug, harissa, and toom. Craft your own dish or enjoy a menu choice such as the Spicy Chicken Bowl or Hummus and Brisket.

A Unique Sports Grill

Ready for something a little different? The area’s first women-focused sports grill recently opened in Phoenix. At Title 9 Sports Grill, women’s sports are front and center. Here, you’ll find wall-to-wall coverage of women’s sports, a menu inspired by legendary female athletes, and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.

The game-day vibes are electric, and every fan (yes, even you, fellas) gets to experience the excitement, passion, and community of supporting women in sports.

PERFECT NOSTALGIA

Popular bar and restaurant The Bar recently opened a second Valley location in the Uptown Phoenix area (its first location is in the Arcadia area).

If you’re a fan of the late-1990s to the early-2000s, stop by and embrace the nostalgia. There’s a massive bar in the dining room, dartboards, pool tables, fun and vibrant murals, CDs adorning the walls, and a black-lit game room with

everything from Skee-Ball and video golf to a classic claw machine.

DJs spin tunes on the weekends, and there’s dart and pool tournaments, too—as well as karaoke, bingo, and trivia nights.

If you’re hungry, try the wings or the smashburger.

Yes, It’s True

David Morton—of the Morton’s Steakhouse family and DMK Restaurants—is back with a new concept. Hearsay Social Kitchen and Perks Café is where dining meets entertainment. Located in the Biltmore area’s Esplanade destination, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner from a unique, fully electric kitchen, turning out creations that offer a balance of bold flavors and comforting familiarity.

“We want a dining experience that feels both exciting and accessible, with each plate designed to highlight quality ingredients alongside innovative techniques,” Morton says.

The menu choices span from the Egg White Frittata and Breakfast Burrito to the Tuna Hamachi Poke Bowl and Pan Seared Salmon.

There’s also a robust cocktail program, along with local beers, wines, and coffee from local roasters. Esplanade, 2501 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; www.hearsay-phx.com

Playing With Fire

When in Arizona, make sure to try Sonoran live fire fare—which is available at the new Glenrosa restaurant at Grass Clipping Rolling Hills, Arizona’s only lighted golf course.

The custom-made live fire grill is the centerpiece of the kitchen and lends to the feeling that you’ve stepped into a Sonoran hacienda.

The menu features family-style platters with ribeye, tortillas, roasted vegetables, and rice and beans, along with tacos, salads, and salsas. These all pair with Glenrosa’s beverage program, where cocktails are made with scratch mixes and fresh squeezed juices.

Tacos Dorados—crispy tacos stuffed with chile Colorado beef, pickled veggies, and consume—are popular for lunch. For dinner, try the 20 oz. bone-in ribeye with charred onion and roasted veggies or the Pescado Zarandeado, which is red snapper marinated in chile Colorado, chimichurri, and charred onions.

A NEW STANDARD

Recently, Downtown Phoenix’s beloved Roosevelt Row area gained a new locale called Industry Standard

A concept created by three local hospitality pros, the restaurant is a dynamic dining experience that blends modern American and Asian fusion cuisine with a vibrant community atmosphere.

Though the food menu is limited, it hits all the right highlights—flatbread, street corn, a roast pork sandwich, and mac and cheese, to name just a few choices—and the options pair with innovative cocktails.

Check the calendar for live DJ entertainment.

THINGS TO DO

IN THE VALLEY

Spring in a Glass

The only thing better than the Valley’s perfect patio weather this time of year is enjoying it with a light, bright seasonal cocktail in one’s hand. Here are six must-sips this spring.

1

AVOCADO

Throughout the spring, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North is celebrating the allure and natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert across all of its menus. The Avocado is among the most popular seasonal selections, boasting both The Lost Explorer Tequila and The Lost Explorer Espadín Mezcal, as well as creamy avocado, lime, and smoke salt. $20. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale; www. fourseasons.com/scottsdale

2

THE BLAZING BLOOM

Radiant in hue and layered in flavor, The Blazing Bloom at

Tell Your Friends is a striking blend of Gray Whale Gin, Aperol, and apricot, delivering a balance of bright citrus and stone fruit sweetness. The contents are shaken with an egg white to provide a silky texture, and once strained into the glass, it is finished with Fever-Tree club soda, which provides a refreshing effervescence. $20. 17797 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.tellyourfriendsaz.com

3

BLACKBERRY BASIL BURRO

The Glenrosa Bar at Grass Clippings Rolling Hills debuted with a bang last month, thanks in great part to this refreshing

vodka-based beauty. It features locally-owned Roxx Vodka, known for its smooth flavor profile, as well as muddled blackberries, peppery basil, lime juice for acid, and a touch of ginger beer for effervescent zest. $11. 1415 N. Mill Ave., Tempe; www.glenrosarestaurant.com
