DINING, REDEFINED

The world-famous immersive dining experience Le Petit Chef, featuring the “smallest chef in the world,” is now at the iconic Arizona Biltmore for a limited time. The experiential culinary show blends cutting-edge 3D projection mapping, creative storytelling, and the locale’s culinary excellence to deliver a multi-sensory adventure.

Developed by the Belgian

art collective “Skullmapping,” this concept restaurant uses proprietary 3D projection technology to bring a 6-centimeter chef to life on your table. Each course is introduced by a carefully choreographed animation in which the animated chef “prepares” your dish in front of you, transforming dining tables into theatrical stages. You’ll be guided through an imaginative

and entertaining four-course culinary journey, where the dishes mirror the miniature chef’s virtual travels around the world.

An intimate epicurean adventure, each show seats just 18 guests. Tickets are $195 per person and the junior’s menu is $79 per child.

New modern-day lifestyle boutique

Jonathan and Max offers a selection of decor, art, accessories, and thoughtful gifts for men, women, and children.

The boutique is located in Uptown Phoenix in a 500-square-foot space, and entering it is akin to stepping inside owner Shauna Kupetz McRae’s own mind—you’ll discover a hand-curated collection of tasteful gifts (items she would choose for her own loved ones) along with a smattering of everyday items, like McRae’s own favorite lip balm, her go-to local coffee, and beverage

decanters that serve as a reminder to slow down and savor moments with loved ones.

“The store is a reflection of my life; it’s things that I would have, gifts I would purchase for my friends and family,” McRae says, laughing as she notes that it’s a bit of an eclectic selection. “There’s no psychology behind my buy-ology, it’s just an assortment of beautiful and useful things that catch my eye, that I think others might appreciate, too.”

Saguaros, Solitude, and Secrets

Ironwood Forest National Monument

The many reasons visitors head to Ironwood Forest National Monument

They come for everything from mountain biking to night photography and hiking to evening campfires. They come hoping to spot some of the last indigenous herd of Big Horn sheep in the Tucson Basin and to view the 80-arm saguaro, the tallest ironwood tree in Arizona, as well as what’s left of a Titan Missile Silo.

They come by the thousands—a little under 200,000 per year, in fact.

We’re talking visitors, of course, who arrive at Ironwood Forest National Monument—which takes its name from one of the longest living trees in the Arizona desert—to view the rugged, wild desert sanctuary’s stunning scenery and explore its secrets.

This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the proclamation creating Ironwood Forest National Monument, which was one of the first national monuments established as part of the Bureau of Land Management’s National Conservation Lands system. National Conservation Lands represent the most ecologically significant and exceptionally unique landscapes.

Ironwood Forest National Monument spans over 189,000 acres and is home to some of the world’s oldest ironwood trees, as well as mesquites, palo verdes, creosotes, and saguaros. There is also a wealth of desert wildlife, and cultural sites include ancient petroglyphs and the remnants of historic settlements.

“In one respect, the Ironwood Forest hasn't changed much in the 25 years since its proclamation,” says Tom Hannagan, president, Friends of the Ironwood Forest. “That was the original intent, as it is part of the Conservation Lands program."

Visitors can also take in the stunning mountain ranges, including The Silver Bill, Waterman, and Sawtooth, which rise from 1,800 to more than 4,200 feet in elevation.

In all, it’s a truly unique showcase of the Sonoran Desert.

“As a nearly native Tucsonan, I realized that I had never seen a Gila monster in the wild. When I visited Ironwood the first time, I spotted one and it was so special,” says Stefanie Boe, tourism and marketing manager, Discover Marana. “The wildflower, cactus blooms, and birds were also just spectacular. It feels like you have the desert to yourself, and it's there just for you. It's pure magic.”

Cool Summer Fun

The temps may be soaring but the fun is all super chill. Here’s where to find cool summer fun in the Valley of the Sun

Even though it’s hot here in the Valley, there is still plenty to do and see. Explore a variety of destinations for a cool summer escape. From surf parks to water parks and splash pads to museums, there are so many ways to chill out.

Splish Splash WATER PARKS

Enjoy thrills and chills at one of Metro Phoenix’s water parks. Yes, even in the desert water fun abounds.

First, many hotels and resorts offer day passes, so even if you’re not staying at a locale overnight, you can enjoy the ambiance and water features (check with the location directly or at www.resortpass.com).

JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (www.jwdesertridge.com) has the 140,000-squarefoot AquaRidge WaterPark, complete with a lazy river, three water slides (including a dual-person vertical wall tube slide), splash pads, a waterfall tower, the adults-only Sky Island, and more. At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (www.marriott.com), find Adventure Water Park, which not only features the iconic Kierland FlowRider flow-board simulator, but a lazy river, 110-foot water slide, and the Tommy Bahama Relaxation Reef private “island.” Meanwhile, Arizona Grand Resort & Spa offers the 7-acre Oasis Water Park (www.arizonagrandresort.com) with its eightstory thrill slides, giant wave pool, a 25-person hot tub, and a special area perfect for younger children, while Great Wolf Lodge (www.greatwolf.com) features an extensive indoor water park designed with kids in mind. At Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (www. scottsdaleprincess.com), dig your toes into the sand

beach, slide down water slides, and enjoy the popular Summer at the Princess events, such as dive-in movies and fireworks. And at The Phoenician (www.thephoenician.com), there are ≠several pools, and the Kids Zone includes a treehouse with a swaying bridge, water slide, splash pad, and more.

There are also destination water parks, such as Six Flags Hurricane Harbor (www.sixflags.com/phoenix), with water slides, a wave pool, the adventure river, splash areas, a kids’ pool, play structures, and more. Meanwhile, Golfland Sunsplash (www.golfland.com/ mesa) offers a variety of amusement park and water park activities that range from laser tag and bumper cars to water slides (including the new nine-story-tall Riptide), an activity pool, and a wave pool. Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic & Fitness Center features a waterslide, lazy river, pool, and splash pad (www.scottsdaleaz.gov), while Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center in Chandler (www.chandleraz.gov) has a family play pool, interactive water feature, two water slides, a lazy river, spray pad, and water vortex.

And, while not a true water park with rides, Revel Surf in Mesa (https://revelsurf.com) offers plenty of adventure. It is open for year-round surfing for everyone from beginners to advanced surfers, with lessons and gear available. There is also cliff jumping, a beach, and a skate flow park.

From top: Tour Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West; enjoy pool time at The Pemberton. Opposite: Slide down the water slide at The Phoenician.

From top: Enjoy a pool party at Caesars Republic Scottsdale; try out the Kierland FlowRider at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa; play at the AquaRidge WaterPark at the JW Marriott

Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

SPLASH PADS

If you have young kids and running through water rather than big rides is more to their liking, there are also several splash pads around town. Of course, adults are welcome to indulge their inner child at these locations, too! Head to Desert Ridge Marketplace (www.shopdesertridge.com), Scottsdale Quarter (www.scottsdalequarter.com), Tempe Marketplace (www.tempemarketplace.com), Civic Space Park (www.phoenix.gov), Sunset Palms Park (www. glendaleaz.com), and Espee Park (www.chandleraz.gov).

POOL PARTIES

Arizona may be a dry heat, but it’s still very hot. With temps like these, we take our pool parties seriously. Locations go all-out with their experiences, with DJs or concerts, dancing, food and drink specials, and more.

In Scottsdale, the new Caesars Republic Scottsdale, a Hilton Hotel (www.caesarsrepublicscottsdale.com) embraces the summer season with its Cleopatra’s Pool Party every Saturday and Sunday. There’s live DJ entertainment, signature cocktails, activations, and more. Nearby, the hip W Scottsdale (www.marriott. com) brings back its popular WET Deck pool parties every Friday through Sunday. Also in Downtown Scottsdale, the mid-century modern Hotel Valley Ho (https://hotelvalleyho.com) features DJs spinning tunes every Friday through Sunday to get the party going. Nearby, Maya Day + Night (https://mayaclubaz. com) was transformed for the 2025 summer season and offers a luxurious, high-energy, sleek destination that hosts world-renowned DJs and celebrity guests at its pool during the day, and transforms into a

sophisticated nightlife experience as night falls.

In Downtown Phoenix at The Pemberton (www.thepemberton.com), a unique outdoor destination, new pool experience Ibiza is open every Friday through Sunday and offers an immersive escape that blends a Mediterranean paradise with Phoenix’s electric energy. Also in Downtown, the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown (https://sheratonphoenixdowntown.com) hosts Splash After Dark, an adults-only rooftop pool party with live DJ sessions.

And at Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass (www.playatgila.com) in Chandler, the iconic Oasis Pool Party is held on select Saturdays and features celebrity guests and internationally recognized DJs (June 28: Nate Smith, July 19: Two Friends, Aug. 23: Lil Jon).

NOTE: Many of these pool parties are for ages 21-plus only; day passes or tickets are available.

Take it to the Lake (or River!)

Water sports, boats, and other water fun can be had at one of the local lakes. Swimming isn’t allowed at the man-made Tempe Town Lake (www.tempe.gov); however, you can rent kayaks, pedal boats, paddle boards, electric boats, or go fishing. Just 17 miles northeast of Carefree is Bartlett Lake (www.bartlettlake.com), where you can swim, fish, and rent a boat, kayak, water skis, or jet skis. About an hour from Phoenix is Canyon Lake (www. canyonlakemarina.com), where you can fish, swim, jet ski, waterski, scuba dive, and more—and take a

dinner cruise, scenic cruise, or astronomy cruise on The Dolly Steamboat (https://dollysteamboat.com), a replica of a classic American sternwheeler. At Lake Pleasant (www.maricopaparks.net), near Peoria, there’s boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, kayaking, an inflatable obstacle course, and more. There’s also H2-Whoa!, the lake’s tallest floating water slide.

For those who would rather lounge in the water, grab an inner tube and float down a river. Salt River Tubing (www.saltrivertubing.com) offers tube rentals and a shuttle bus service to the Salt River, where those ages 8-plus can float through the Tonto National Forest.

Chill Out Indoors

While in many areas of the country people head outdoors during the summer, in Metro Phoenix, we head indoors. Spend time at these fun locations while soaking up the air conditioning.

Arizona Boardwalk (www.azboardwalk.com) is a Scottsdale destination with a number of attractions, including the Museum of Illusions (https://moiscottsdale.com); Odysea Aquarium (www.odyseaaquarium.com), the largest aquarium in the Southwest; Butterfly Wonderland (www. butterflywonderland.com), the largest indoor butterfly conservatory in America; Cluville (https://cluville.us), an escape room designed for kids; and more. There are also dining spots and shops at Arizona Boardwalk. For an icy time, head to the Ice Den (www.coyotesice. com), an indoor ice skating rink that has locations in Scottsdale and Chandler.

After you’re done with a day of fun, book a dinner at the iconic restaurant LON’s at the Hermosa Inn (www.hermosainn.com), which opens its private underground wine cellar (kept at a cool 57 degrees)— for a one-of-a-kind, prix-fixe, five-course culinary menu, offered Thursday through Sunday nights.

MUST-SEE MUSEUMS

Another way to get out of the heat is to tour one of the Valley’s many museums. Popular destinations include Phoenix Art Museum (https://phxart.org), the largest art museum in the southwestern United States; the Musical Instrument Museum (https:// mim.org), the world’s only global musical instrument museum, which also offers a summer concert series; Arizona Science Center (www.azscience.org), which includes hands-on exhibits; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (https://smoca.org), also known as SMoCA to those in-the-know, and dedicated to contemporary art, architecture, and design; the Heard Museum (https://heard.org), a top museum for the presentation, interpretation, and advancement of American Indian art; and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (www.westernspirit.org), offering the story of the Greater Western region.

Those who enjoy architecture can explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West (https://franklloydwright. org), Frank Lloyd Wright’s (1867-1959) winter home and desert laboratory. Meanwhile, children enjoy the Children’s Museum of Phoenix (www. childrensmuseumofphoenix.org), which is one of the top children’s museums in the nation.

Clockwise from top left: Explore the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM); slide down a floating water slide; visit the many locations at Arizona Boardwalk; cool off at a pool party at W Scottsdale.

Nestled among the Red Rocks with stunning views and positive energy, Arabella Sedona will enchant you. Here, dramatic desert scenery and outdoor adventures exist in perfect harmony with fine art galleries and mystical sanctuaries. Mountain bike and hike over 300 miles of trails to panoramic overlooks, then relax and enjoy nature’s beauty in one of our hot tubs or heated pools. We offer complimentary hot breakfast daily, stargazing and live music weekly, and are a pet-friendly resort. Our many complimentary amenities and warm, friendly staff will delight you!

THINGS TO DO

IN THE VALLEY

5 Secret Speakeasies

SEEKING OUT THE VALLEY’S BUZZIEST HIDDEN HAUNTS

During Prohibition, hundreds of hidden bars popped up nationwide. These secret spots would be nicknamed speakeasies because they required guests to “speak easy”—or quietly—about them. While Prohibition is long gone, hidden speakeasy-style haunts continue to be popular in the Valley. Here are some stunners.

1

STRAIGHT UP WHISKEY BAR

There is a telephone booth situated just off the main lobby at Hotel Adeline. Given it's 2025, anything other than a smartphone feels out of place. Or is it? The telephone booth is a hidden door, and that door is the clandestine entrance to Straight Up Whiskey Bar, a secret lounge that requires a password to enter (ask those at the front desk to provide it). There, enjoy premium and rare whiskeys, as well as specialty cocktails and a great menu of wines in an intimate, modern setting. 5101 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.hoteladeline.com

2

TELL YOUR FRIENDS

Tell Your Friends—recently named Bar of the Year at the 2025 Bar & Restaurant Expo Industry Excellence Awards and Arizona’s Iconic Speakeasy Experience at the Foodist Awards—is an underground experience hidden beneath The Americano restaurant. Accessible by a nondescript door inside the award-winning eatery, upon descending down the staircase, prepare to be enveloped by a sea of florals followed by a Great Gatsby art deco vibe, complete with velvet drapes and brass art installations. The luxe

drinks are complemented by live music nightly. 17797 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; https://tellyourfriendsaz.com

3 THE CAVE

Located in Downtown Phoenix, popular experiential bar Quartz features gemstonethemed cocktails. While impressive on its own, hidden behind the main bar space is a secret doorway. Those who sneak through will find The Cave. This “gem” inside of Quartz features rose-gold mirrors from floor to ceiling and features a menu inspired by deserts around the world. Every cocktail tells a desert story through flavor and offers some sort of whimsical sensory experience for the guest. 341 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix; www.quartzphx.com

4 THE MADAM

When The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, a Curio Collection Resort by Hilton, debuted its renovation last year, it had a few tricks up its sleeve, including a new speakeasy called The Madam. Inspired by

the 1920s, the ultra-intimate space is only accessible to those with the secret password. To find it, explore the brand’s social media or connect with the staff while on property. Once armed with it, make your way up a staircase from the lobby to a hidden room of wonder. 7700 E. McCormick Pkwy., Scottsdale; www. thescottsdaleresort.com

5

POPPY’S OFFICE

Paul Keeler, often called Poppy, was a giant in the Arizona culinary scene, beloved for Liberty Station American Tavern & Smokehouse and Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse, among others. When he passed away in 2021, his family honored him by creating Poppy’s Office. Tucked in near Liberty Station Terravita, the speakeasystyle cocktail bar is a near replica of Keeler’s private office, complete with personal mementos, family portraits, and memorabilia of Keeler’s favorite teams. 34522 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; https://poppysoffice.com
