TE AROHA GOLF CLUB

Golfing at Te Aroha

Te Aroha Golf Club is one of the oldest sporting facilities in Te Aroha, having been in existence for more than 100 years. Residents in the community are encouraged to become members so they can enjoy the club facilities where, in addition to full membership there are options such as a 9-hole category, junior golfer, associate etc, including a first year reduced subscription, most with fee payments available on a time-payment basis. Twilight golf on Tuesday evening allows a great opportunity to try out the game in a more social atmosphere; players do not have to be members of the club to enjoy these evenings. Management of the club rests in the hands of the all-volunteer committee with sub groups attending to such club activities as tournaments, team events, twilight golf, catering etc. The course and club facilities are available to Corporate or Charitable organisations for "Golf Days" with packages to suit particular requirements for the group. Recently the club hosted the 64th Thames Valley Match Play Championship event, noted as one of those Te Aroha events where visiting players just keep on turning up every year for this popular 3 day event. Membership numbers are being retained at present but to encourage participation by entry level players on those who just want to 'try out', the club at this time of year offers Twilight Golf. On Tuesdays from 5pm, players can make up their own team of four or join in with another group for a social game over 9 holes, where even the novice golfer can benefit in a fun game format, followed by drinks/snacks in the clubhouse afterwards.

Scott Simpson, M P Coromandel Huge reduction in youth crime A great deal of time in Parliament is spent formulating policy. It often takes enormous amount of time, debate and consultation. And then there is the task of working out how to best implement the policy. That is why it is hugely satisfying when a policy not only achieves the intended results but far exceeds expectations. As Chair of the Justice and Electoral Select Committee I am extremely heartened that the latest crime statistics have shown that from June 2011 to June 2013 youth crime across the country has dropped 19 per cent. This is an incredible achievement and is a result of reform and co-operation across a variety of sectors including our extremely dedicated police force, the courts, health providers, schools, the probation service and the welfare system. While we are lucky enough to live in one of the safest parts of New Zealand, public safety is still a major priority for the people of Te Aroha and other parts of the Coromandel electorate. They want to feel safe in their homes and they want to see us making progress on issues like the control of alcohol in communities so we can reduce the likelihood of criminal activity. The latest results to June 2013 show crime nationally has fallen 12 per cent; violent crime is down 8 per cent and re-offending down 11 per cent. This is a direct result of National’s focus on crime prevention - getting more officers out on the front line, giving them better tools to do their jobs, and providing better intervention programmes for young people. But it is the huge drop in youth offending that for me is the most satisfying. If we can steer people away from entering a life of crime at an early age, we reduce the likelihood of them coming to police attention in later life which means less crime and safer communities for all of us. It also means a large number of our young people who otherwise may have simply drifted further and further into the hands of the criminal justice system will now have the chance to go on and live productive lives as contributing members of society. That is a hugely positive outcome. Encouraged by this success, the Minister of Justice has now set a new youth crime target – to reduce youth offending by 25 per cent by 2017. To do this the Government will continue to build on the Justice sector’s Better Public Services (BPS) result action plan focusing on vulnerable youth and youth offenders including: • Improving health and education responses for at-risk youth • Improving responses to children as, or before, they come to the notice of the criminal justice system • Developing integrated school attendance services to respond to disengaged and truanting youth • Improving youth mental health pathways and services

The other Justice sector Better Public Service targets are a 15 per cent reduction in overall crime, a 20 per cent reduction in violent crime and a 25 per cent reduction in re-offending by June 2017. I would like to extend my thanks to our local police and the members of all those agencies who are part of this on-going success. These individuals have highly challenging and demanding roles. Their work ultimately means our at-risk young people are being identified and assisted and we get to life in a safer place community – something I think we all greatly appreciate.

Every year i-SITE managers from all over New Zealand convene for a conference. While the actual conference is held in a hotel the best bits are always the ‘familiarisation’ day trips. This year the conference was held in Hamilton giving Waikato i-SITE managers a great opportunity to showcase our region. Te Aroha i-SITE hosted staff from Huntly, Hamilton, Hastings, Hurunui and Wanganui, picking them up from their accommodation and giving them a great day out. We kicked off the day by cycling the Karangahake section of the Hauraki Rail Trail before enjoying a lovely lunch at a local winery. Then we whisked them back to Te Aroha for a relaxing soak in a hot spa. For those who wanted to explore, there was a walk around the domain and quick dip of weary feet in the foot pool. After a lovely day we headed back to Hamilton, stopping by the Wallace Gallery for a look on the way. Our guests really enjoyed their big day out and commented that the provincial towns are all so different, each having something unique to offer. They didn’t realise how large and diverse the Waikato region is and loved how it’s not too ‘touristy’. Other i-SITEs organised similar day trips for the visitors. Within a few days delegates managed to tour a horse stud in Cambridge, visit the zoo and gardens in Hamilton, kayak on the Waikato River, learn to surf in Raglan, feed the kaka on Maungatautari, drink ale at Hobbiton, cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail and soak in the therapeutic mineral waters at the Te Aroha Mineral Spas. Everyone had a lot of fun and went away raving about the Waikato. We enjoyed hosting our colleagues and know they will go home and recommend the Waikato to their own visitors. Our 2014 Te Aroha calendar is due out soon, packed with beautiful photos of our town set against the ever changing backdrop of the mountain. Key events for next year are included so with one of these on your wall, you’ll always know what’s on! The calendars come with envelopes for posting and make lovely gifts for friends and family overseas. They will be on sale at i-SITE soon. And we can’t wait until Aroha Cruise In with all those beautiful shiny, classic cars – Bring it on! Keep Cruisin’ till next month the i-SITE team

Vote for a high performing Council Garry Stanley has been a high performing councillor for Matamata-Piako for the past nine years.

are favourable and investing smartly for the benefit of current and future residents and ratepayers.

His approach has been to take on projects where he can add real value to the council and community.

COLLABORATION Garry’s leadership style is collaborative and low key. He encourages those around him to bring their best work to their role yet doesn’t shirk accountability for results. As Mayor, this style will assure residents and ratepayers of great results.

Among his achievements: COST CUTTING Garry chaired a working party on Solid Waste Minimisation and Recycling which created savings of $200,000 per year.

Authorised by Garry Stanley, 27 Kaimai Drive, Matamata, 3400

EFFECTIVE OVERSIGHT When staff proposed borrowing $226,000 to insulate pensioner flats, Garry suggested an alternative method, saving Council and pensioners $133,000. SHARING SERVICES TO CUT COSTS A committee of Hauraki, Thames Coromandel and Matamata Piako District Councils, Chaired by Garry, cut the annual M-P cost of waste collections by $175,000. SKILLED FINANCIAL INPUT When Garry was first elected nine years ago he argued for the Council’s overseas investment fund to be returned. He lost the debate and the community has since lost a lot of the value of the diminished fund. If elected Mayor, Garry is committed to returning this fund when market conditions

It’s your choice: more of the same from another Mayoral candidate, or a high-performing Matamata-Piako District Council with Garry Stanley as Mayor.

Let’s sort youth unemployment Youth unemployment is not good for our community and I am making a commitment that, if I am elected Mayor, I will create a working group within 12 months to tackle the problem. We can do it! Let’s work together on solving this blight on our community.

HOCKEY Thames Valley Under 13 Representative Hockey Team will be competing in the National Collier Cup Hockey Tournament in Wellington this season. An excellent achievement! The only local part of this team, Te Aroha girl AMBER SPAIN, who plays Goalie and Mid-fielder has been selected to play in the National Tournament. Congratulations Amber! Can you help? Amber needs urgent sponsorship! Each team member needs $700 to get to the Tournament. Any Business or anyone who can assist please contact Te Aroha Print Ltd, 40 Kenrick Street and we will make sure she receives a listing of sponsors and their funding amount. Your help with this would be greatly appreciated, this is a richly rewarding experience for the girls in this team and one that will provide them with lifelong memories! You may even be helping sponsor a future NZ Blackstick rep!

Te Aroha Identities Lawrence Campbell Mackie - Builder - 1894-1978 Laurie was two years old when he arrived in Te Aroha from Stratford with his parents to live in a little house in Koromiko Street. All his school days were spent attending Te Aroha Primary and High School. Mackie and Sons - Builder was established by William Mackie in 1896. And when he left school, Laurie joined his brother Fred to work for their father. They carried the firm on until 1974. One of Laurie’s legends in our town would be all the houses the firm built over the years, it is said that in nearly every house they built, he included a small leadlight window somewhere. The Mokena Restaurant has such a window on the southern of the building. This was included when the firm did the addition in 1927. The Firm built the Rugby Union Training sheds at Boyd Park, and free labour was provided to build the local RSA. He was 20 years old when he enlisted to go to the Great War, 19141918. Laurie was away the whole four years and came home safe and sound. Not so his young brother Arthur who was killed in action, in October 1918.

Tennis Club 50th Celebrations

Laurie smuggled a camera to the war and took some amazing photographs, these photos are stored in the Alexander Turnbull library (Wellington) and can be viewed online. In 1 919 he built himself a house in Jackson Street and married Miss Elsie Price from Thames. Laurie was Mayor, 1941-1947, and under his leadership the town gave full support to the troops overseas. After the war finished he instigated the idea of a memorial clock to in recognition of the fallen. Laurie was a member of the 5000 club, the Orphans Club and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a foundation member of the Te Aroha Rotary Club. He enjoyed his sport and played golf, badminton, bowls and tennis. Laurie was President when the new Tennis and Squash Club built the courts in 1927 at Boyd Park. He was a generous man and gave many donations to the club. Laurie was made a Life Member of the club. When Laurie and Elsie passed away they left a monetary legacy to the town the - Laurie & Elsie Mackie Memorial fund – and each year the interest from this money is used to support local organisations.

Thanks Folks (its not really something to celebrate) To our fantastic staff and kids thanks for taking the weight of me when I need it, and for all the little extra bits you do for me, that might not seem much to you, but means heaps to me. Cheers Guys. LORRAINE what can I say? your my rock, you hold it all together, the business, us personally and my sanity. I know we got together later in life, but I actually intend to live to at least 100 so we’ve got heaps of time. Luv you babe.

TE AROHA FREEMASONS To be concerned for those in need is an essential qualityy of a Freemasons way of life. For centuries Freemasons have given to those needing assistance. Freemasonry is old. It was first organised in England in the early 17th Century (but its origins go back much further) when "charity" was the term for acts of giving to those who had little. Today Freemasons still practice this virtue and "charity" is still the name we use to describe our support for the many programmes of assistance we operate in the community. Each year the Freemasons charity donates over the 10 million dollars to NZ scholarships, NZ Paediatric and Gerontology research and charitable causes all over New Zealand. Closer to home the Te Aroha lodge donated $25,000 to Te Aroha community and district hospital towards the cost of a new nurse call system that has to be replaced. We hope to continue to be able to help charitable organisations for many years to come both nationally and in our own communities. Freemasonry is open to all men from all walks of life, if you are interested or would like further information about our organisation, feel free to contact David Freeman on Te Aroha 884 4364.

TE AROHA AP & H HOME INDUSTRIES SECTION Schedules are out now for the Home Industries Section of the AP & H show for the 117th year. Some sections have changed slightly. Some have had a few classes either deleted or added to. Photography section theme has changed this year also. Childern can do some craft work for their section at home if they wish - a great holiday entertainment idea for the wet days anyway. Theme for Courts/Decorative this year is "Stage Show". We have Budz, a new sponsor, sponsoring the entire Decorative section of the show. They have come to the party, so to speak, with all the class descriptions for this section and supplying all prize points gifts. Schedules are available from shops showing the yellow sign on their windows including Daisy Hill Designs, Info centre, Library, Salon Chez Helene, Framing Quilt and Craft just to name a few. Don't forget anyone can enter but if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Clarissa Hart 887 3655 or Colleen Walsh 884 9964. A big thank you to all sponsors, your help really helps us.
