Promoting Te Aroha

Lest we forget!

Ian Harrop

Mention the Te Aroha RSA and most people immediately think of it as an excellent venue for an evening out or to celebrate a special occasions. And, indeed, it is with its Flavours Restaurant catering with bar snacks from 2pm or meals from 5.30 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as well as for special occasions. But the RSA was established for much more than that. On July 17, 1931, barely 13 years after the end of the 191418 War, and in the middle of the Great Depression, 60 exservicemen of the Te Aroha district met in the Masonic Hall and resolved to form the Te Aroha District Returned Soldiers Association. The early concern of the RSA was the welfare of ex servicemen and their dependant families. And the welfare of ex-servicemen and women and their families is still one of the prime functions of the RSA. Increasing and good support received from the community in the form of Poppy Day donations is greatly appreciated and these are disbursed solely for the welfare of ex-servicemen Pleasing, too, is the increasing interest and support by the public for ANZAC Day, when the sacrifice of 100 local men who lost their lives in WW1, and 69 lost in WW2, is honoured and the service of all members of the armed forces is recognised, and current serving members of the NZ armed forces, are also recognized and welcomed into the RSA family This year, too, The Royal New Zealand RSA is encouraging Kiwis to wear their poppies from Poppy Day, April 17, through to Anzac Day RSA Chief Executive, David Moger, says 2014 is particularly significant because it heralds the start of World War One centenary commemorations. “Rather than wear a poppy for one day, we are encouraging New Zealanders to display it on their lapel through to Anzac Day, April 25, as a mark of respect and remembrance,” David says. “Wearing a poppy is a way for Kiwis to connect to and honour the Anzac values of compassion, comradeship, courage and commitment, shown by New Zealand forces across all generations.”

More than 18,000 New Zealanders paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War 1, more than in any other conflict involving New Zealand forces, and over 40,000 were wounded. Poppy Day is the RSA’s biggest annual fundraiser. About 1.2 million poppies will be distributed this year and David hopes donations will reach $2.5 million. In the last few years they have amounted to almost $2 million. Hundreds of poppy volunteers will be on streets throughout New Zealand from early April 17 and poppies will also be available from Z service stations. DAWN PARADE This year the Te Aroha RSA is holding an inaugural dawn parade on ANZAC Day, April 25, 2014. The dawn parades are traditionally an ‘RSA only’ service, organised by the Association, as distinct from the mid-morning civic service which is the responsibility of the District Council. continued page 3

This means there will be no dignitaries officiating, but all RSA members and families are welcome to parade, and the public are encouraged to attend. Pride of place in the parade and service goes to war veterans. Te Aroha is honoured to count 15 returned service personnel (sadly much reduced from the peak of more than 300 immediately following WW2) war veterans among its number. The format will be fairly simple and follows a military routine. Dawn has always been a favoured time for attack, and soldiers in defensive positions were woken before dawn to ‘stand to’, being awake, alert and manning their weapons. The proposed programme is for the parade to assemble at the RSA clubrooms to march to the WW1 cenotaph by 6am. An opening address by RSA President Russell Smith will be followed by a short sermon. A wreath will be laid accompanied by a lone piper. The Last Post and Reveille will be played by the bugler. The Ode to the Fallen will be recited between the bugle calls. The parade will return to the clubrooms and dismissed to enjoy breakfast. The Dawn Service programme is: 5.30am RSA open, Rum and Coffee served 5.45 am Parade forms up. 5.50 Parade leaves RSA for WW1 Cenotaph 6am. Service begins. After service return to RSA for breakfast. The RSA is endeavouring to contact all Returned and Service personnel, some of whom are not RSA members. The RSA would be pleased to be advised of ex-service people who are not members, so they may be invited to attend. Descendants and families of past servicemen and women are encouraged to attend and march, wearing their fathers’, mothers’ or grandparents’ medals (on the right breast). As is usual, all RSA members and the public are invited to participate in the mid-morning civic service at the town’s war memorials, and the hospitality which follows, at the club. Did you know that you do not need to be a Returned Serviceman to join the RSA, Or have any association with the Military? There are three main types of membership -- • Returned service person; • Ex-Service person; or • Associate Member, which makes up over 80% of current membership. Anybody can become a member of the RSA, (subject to acceptance) And, of course, the Te Aroha RSA clubrooms provide: a safe friendly environment in which to socialize and dine; Courtesy van from 5.30pm Thursday & 5.30pm - 8.30pm Friday (unless functions are on); three full-size snooker tables; two 8-ball tables; two dart boards; indoor bowls; eight gaming machines in an airconditioned room; open 6-days a week; air conditioning / heat pumps perfect for the cold winter or the hot summer days; and friendly staff. Yep! It is a top venue and it’s an organization that has the motto “People Helping People”.

TE AROHA MOUNTAIN LIONS REACHING FOR THE HEIGHTS Aiming high is something the members of the Te Aroha Mountain Lions Club Charitable Trust are not afraid to do be it increasing membership or raising funds. At the beginning of her second term as President last July, club President, Wanda Brittain, challenged members to have 25 members by the end of her year. Members responded with enthusiasm and since February members have seen three new members inducted, Irene Thomason, Raewyn Trebilock and Anne Stuart. This brings the total membership of the club to 27 topping the membership target by two. Sponsor for all three new members was 2nd Vice President Margaret Martin. A new membership target has now been set at thirty which hopefully, will be reached by the end of the year. Retention is always a key point with any club so the members of this active and busy Lions Club were delighted to be awarded the President’s Retention Badge for 2012-2013 by Lions Clubs International. With the year well underway members are busy preparing for their annual Easter Raffle to be held at Countdown on the 11 April. Once again members are aiming high as this year the raffle is in support of local volunteer fireman Shane Reilly who is competing in the Fire Brigade Sky Tower Climb in aid of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer. A number of members attended the recent District 202L Convention and thoroughly enjoyed a chance to socialise with other club members, hear the International President, Barry Palmer and learn more about the Lions International movement. Having been so successful in spearheading the electric bed project for the Te Aroha Community Hospital last year, members are now undertaking to raise funds for two much needed shower trolleys at the hospital as the current ones are ageing rapidly. Each trolley will cost over $7,000.00 plus GST however members are determined to raise the money with a little help from their friends in the community who are always so supportive of the hospital.

Members (L) Kate Remfry and Margaret Martin (R) with District Governor Richard Norris at the recent District 202L Convention in Morrinsville.

Members are also starting work in preparation for the annual Book Fair to be held on November 7-8, with regular book sorting as those much needed books start coming in again as well as looking at who the recipients will be this year. Last year a record profit was made so members are looking to aim even higher and create a new record this year. For information on where to leave books or to have them collected phone Phillipa on 07 884 9781 or Catherine 07 884 8222. Members are also planning to be a part of the Lions International Lunch Relay Prospective members are always welcome to come along to the monthly meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Te Aroha RSA. For further information contact Wanda Brittain on 07 884 7489.

Pre-season sports education evening Physiotherapists at Te Aroha Physiotherapy will host a sport education evening specifically targeting the pre-season build up and self-management during competition, in preparation for the winter sports.

Topics covered will include • SPORTS TAPING – covering the four most common injuries: ankle, knee, shoulder and thumb.

Principal physiotherapist Jenny Lucy states “many injuries throughout the season can be avoided when athletes understand how to manage themselves for optimal performance. Injury need not derail your season and ruin all that hard work and preparation you’ve put into getting ready”. Physiotherapists on hand for this session will include Jenny Lucy – the NZ AFL physiotherapist, Rob Neish – former NZ Tall Blacks basketball physiotherapist, and Natasha Bancroft who is currently studying a Post Graduate qualification in Sports Physiotherapy.

COURSE DETAILS DATE: Wednesday 2nd April VEnUE: Te Aroha Physiotherapy downstairs hall

• ACTIve STReTChING – learn how proper preparation can prevent injury. • COMPeTITION SeLF-MANAGeMeNT – learn how to listen to and manage your body during the competition phase so injury does not derail your season.

The course will be a minimum of 3 hours and is open to any sportsperson from any team, code or district and of any age. Practice Manager Jillian O’Neill believes that all athletes should be making themselves available to attend such courses to upskill their knowledge on how to get better at their chosen sport. “They can’t start early enough and getting them this information when they are young will make a huge difference to the length of their sporting

career and therefore their results”. Coaches, managers and parents are also encouraged to attend as they are often integral in teaching and managing athletes throughout the season.

FORGOTTEN AND UNKNOWN KIWIS

Daisy Hill Designs Wool Shop Te Aroha Contact Stephanie 07 884 7668 021 55 66 43 steph_hill@xtra.co.nz

by Steve A. Sunde

When I loose my way and cannot see due to the overburdens of my soul, which is the plight of broken South Aucklanders, I head to my most favourite room in New Zealand. It’s a place on the top floor of the Museum, in the Auckland Domain. Inscribed on its walls are names Of dead, forgotten and unknown Kiwis. As I trace with my hands, fingers and eyes the inscribed names on the walls it leads to the window of my soul. My spirit quickens and begins to stir with the thoughts I carry of the people I represent to the people who died unselfishly. I begin to weep as I loose control of my thoughts through the fusion of my feelings with these paradigms of the dead and the living. As I lie there in a pool of tears I pour out my heartfelt respect to the bravest generation of New Zealanders who are all but names inscribed in stone. The funny thing is, I never know how long I spend there, as time seems to stop.

CAN I JOIN THE TE AROHA RSA… yes you can

The collision of thoughts have reduced me to nothing. The living human tragedy of South Auckland that I have chosen to change; the plight of the living Kiwi has taken new meaning in my dancing heart.

Did you know that you do not need to be a Returned Serviceperson or have any association with the Military to join the Te Aroha RSA. There are three main types of membership – • Returned service member; • Ex-Service person; or • Associate Member, which makes up over 90% of current membership. Anybody can become a member of the RSA, (subject to acceptance) And, of course, the Te Aroha RSA clubrooms provide a safe friendly environment to socialize and dine; • Courtesy van from 5.30pm Thursday & 5.30pm - 8.30pm Friday (unless functions are on) • 3 x full size snooker Tables • 2 x 8 ball tables • 2 x dart boards • Indoor bowls • 8 x gaming machines in an air-conditioned room • Air conditioning / heat pumps perfect for the cold winter or the hot summer days; friendly staff • Open 6 days a week

Te Aroha RSA has its very own FLAVOURS RESTAURANT catering with bar snacks from 2pm or meals from 5.30 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Te Aroha RSA can also cater for weddings, funerals, conferences, 21st and any other special occasions.

To enquire more about joining the RSA call in and have a chat to our friendly staff.

The magic of remembering our brave Kiwi soldiers and nurses who paid the greatest price; they gave us the gift of their lives. Even though they may be gone and I’m alive, those names etched in stone have given this Kiwi a gift. That gift is a renewed strength of being alive To return to my patch in life. My soul and spirit are broken no more! I return to who I am ….. A stronger and more compassionate man, filled with hope, strength and love of those most special Kiwis who reside in South Auckland. Those South Auckland Kiwis’ lives mightn’t seem much but they were bought by those forgotten, unknown Kiwis whose names remain forever etched on the walls in a Museum.

Grumpy Old Man Writes. . . Okay, hands up, who has travelled more than 20km from Te Aroha without encountering road works? If you have you must have been blessed with unbelievable fortune. My journeys these days (which are many and often) serve only to fill me with dismay that I had overlooked a golden opportunity to become a multi-millionaire. How could I have failed to see the opportunity that Halloween had presented us with the evil witch’s hat. If I’d painted it red and white and patented it the world would be my oyster, now. Instead of which I’m stuck, once more, waiting for the man with the stop/go board to give me a cheery wave. Oh well, I’m not sure opulence would suit me. But, is it my imagination or are there more roads in need of repair than ever before? Could it be that they are not built as well as they used to be? Or could it be the number of enormous trucks and trailers that seem to be bigger and heavier than ever that is taking a toll on our roads? In days gone by the only road to Hamilton was SH26. All other routes were invariably unsealed tracks connecting a series of farms. Then they sealed them and cut my travelling time to the Waikato Times by 15 minutes - oh the joy of it. Until one day there was a thundering great Kenworth coming in the opposite direction – frightened the hell of me! These narrow roads were not built for that sort of traffic – and frankly they still aren’t! If you don’t believe there are more of them infesting our roads than ever, pop down to Morrinsville and stand at the roundabout at the intersection of Allen Street and Studholm Street. When we came through this week there were three queuing up at it and two more approaching – I can’t imagine what the residents of those streets must be thinking. Maybe I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time – but no - a resident of Manawaru happened to comment that the number of enormous trucks and trailers rattling through the village, often not slowing

(even for the school), had increased alarmingly. I was going out to visit when a logging truck and trailer, loaded to the gunnels rounded the infamous clock tower intersection and I was left to follow. At Stanley Road he left the state highway with barely a hint of slowing. Came the Manawaru Road turn-off and rounded it as if he were on a motorbike. I left him as he sailed on through Manawaru village. I guessed he was heading for the docks at Tauranga and by taking the back roads had eliminated all the hazards that were likely to slow his progress – like speed restrictions, traffic lights, roundabouts and of course traffic cops. What’s more important a few more bucks in the carrier’s pocket or the sanity and safety of people who live in what is essentially a rural community? Who in their right mind could possibly have sanctioned the size and weight of some of these juggernauts. All their costsaving by their additional capacity is more than outweighed by the cost incurred in additional damage – to roads and our nerves and we’re the ones paying. Of course, if they do it often enough, it’s going to play havoc with the road surface and it will all have been for nothing as they sit waiting for the stop/go man to give them a cheery wave. But size isn’t everything – ask Jim Lucy. He has exactly the same problem in his Kenrick Street office. Step outside his door onto the pavement and you have just as much chance of being bowled over as on any of our truck-riddled roads. “Look at ‘em,” he yelled at me as yet another speed-mad mobility scooter went whizzing by “It’s like this all the time”. Maybe we should put the trucks on the pavement and the mobility scooters on the road.

Did you know that cats get arthritis as well as dogs? Arthritis is a painful condition no matter what your size. Cats often become reclusive once they start to experience joint pain so arthritis can be easily overlooked in our smaller companions. As many as 1 in 3 cats will develop arthritis so pay particular attention to cats over 12 years of age that seem to be ‘slowing down’.

How will you know if your cat has arthritis? Here are some signs to look for:    

No longer jumping and becoming less active Unwilling to go up stairs Pain when touched or picked up Matted fur over their back where it hurts to groom

Unfortunately, once arthritis has developed it cannot be cured but getting onto the problem early can slow joint damage meaning an increased quality of life for longer.

Treatment options for arthritis include:      

Rest Weight management Pain relief medication (long-term treatment now available) Joint diets Joint supplements A combination of the above

The team at Te Aroha Veterinary Services is working towards a pain-free life for your furry friend so that you and your pet can relax in comfort at the end of every day. Talk to our friendly staff at the clinic for more information or head to www.catswitharthritis.com to learn more Easter clinic hours: The clinic will be open every Saturday during April from 9am-12pm If your pet requires treatment over the public holiday period we will be providing a 24hr emergency service available on (07) 884 9522

This was Te Aroha

Edwin Henry Hardy

Anyone who does a bit of tramping out at Waiorongomai will have heard of Hardy’s Hut and most likely has tramped the two hour trek up the valley to take a look at where his workshop and hut once stood. In 1898 Edwin Henry Hardy, a Government Surveyor from Otago formed the Te Aroha Gold Mining Company and purchased the Firth and Clark Battery. After obtaining the rights to use the tramway owned by the Piako County, they fixed the old battery to run on ten stamper heads keeping it in first class working order, at all times. The water races that had been constructed to power the turbine water wheels were cleared and repaired. Edwin utilised the capital works carried out by many previous operations and removed ore from their workings without committing himself to vast capital expenditure. The Colonial Exploration Company had driven a 1670 feet extension in The Premier and Edwin Hardy successfully worked this mine for some years yielding satisfactory returns from 1899 to 1905.

Hardy mines claim

Hardy’s Hut was used by the men bringing the ore down to the battery as a sleep over. The men would take the ore down the tramway using horses and if they returned late in the day they would stay in the hut to get an early start the next morning. In 1931, Edwin was taking his son Malcolm and grand son David to check out one of the mines and about where the bridge crosses over the Butlers incline Edwin didn’t feel so well but insisted Malcolm and David continue on to the mine. When they returned Edwin had passed away, he was aged 71 years and is buried in the Te Aroha cemetery.

Boy scouts leaving Hardys hut 1957

Hardy’s Mine Company held title to an extensive area in the Waiorongomai Valley and in 1936, Edwin’s son Malcolm York Hardy, started work on the old Colonist Reef; this was the last major drive by Hardy Mines. Malcolm continued to work the mines sometimes staying in the hut used by his father’s gang in previous years. Malcolm extracted the ore and sent it to Australia until 1946 when the final phase of mining in the Waiorongomai valley ended. Malcolm York Hardy died on August 15th, 1963 aged 67 years and is buried in the Te Aroha cemetery. His epitaph reads “Kismet” Submitted by Te Aroha Museum Peg: mining survey peg Aroha Advertiser - Page 14

Our Community News Joint Project Underway

As a result of our article in Te Aroha Advertiser a fundraising project is underway to help us to purchase a shower trolley for our more fragile patients. Te Aroha Lions and Te Aroha Mountain Lions have been very enthusiastic about raising funds for us with Te Aroha Lions starting the fund raising drive by donating $2,500. Ideas from community members to help raise the money have been great. Sylvia Casella-Mahon, acting facility manager states “the enthusiasm and empathy towards our plight was really very humbling.” Your hospital helps local theatre in up and coming one act play directed by Wanda Brittain We were delighted to be able to provide some props for a one act play “Finding a Voice” which will be going live from 3rd April. This play is centered in a hospital- there is a twist which has some very interesting moments and causes quite a stir!!! Good Samaritans Thanks to Cullen Engineering’s Operations Director, Michael Harris for popping up when we least expect it with some lovely hams for our patients and residents. Thanks to Red Cross here in Te Aroha for funding our First Aid Refresher course for staff which was very much appreciated. Thanks to Rural Women NZ Elstow Branch, St Marks Bowling Club, and Summer Indoor Bowls for your donations this year and to a very kind gentleman who comes in every year with a financial donation for us. Thanks to Doreen Shackell who facilitated a fundraising to help us to buy an emergency trolley. We are indeed grateful for all the efforts to help. The Trust Board and staff are committed to keeping our Hospital and Rest Home sustainable in what continues to be a challenging and under-funded environment.

Active Aroha APRIL 2013 This month the ECHO Walking Festival continues. Now in it’s 11th year it has expanded to include walks firm Coromandel to South Waikato. Te Aroha has always been important to this festival and there are a number of local walks that are still open for registrations. As well as some great full day guided hikes to Te Aroha Summit, around Wairongomai or Wairere Falls, there are a number of shorter walks that suit families or amblers. There is even an overnighter at the Pinnacles Hut which would be a fantastic adventure for a family. ECHO Walking Festival runs to 6th April. For more information find it on Facebook at www.echowalkfest.org.nz or pop into Te Aroha iSite.

Community News MANAWARU COMMUNITY CHURCH When a Committee of seven was elected at a public meeting in the Manawaru Hall in 1996, it was given the mandate to deter the authorities from selling & removing Manawaru`s iconic Anglican Church. That spontaneous public support, with wonderful encouragement from David Moxon, the then Bishop of Waikato, resulted in the creation of the Manawaru Community Church. Community usage of the church was not new. Evidence of this generosity of the Anglicans to share their church with other denominations is borne out by Archdeacon E.M. Cowie in 1916 thus:- “The position of Manawaru is that Presbyterians & Methodists were allowed to use the nave but not the sanctuary as a matter of courtesy.” Hence the rather quaint installation of the sliding doors to screen the sanctuary. In return, grateful Presbyterians who held services there for almost 80 years, never shirked in their responsibility to help maintain the church. Now with management & maintenance firmly controlled by the Church Committee (comprising reps from Anglican. Catholic, Bible Chapel & Cooperating Parish, their almost 18 year existence has achieved the following:-*Picket fence & Notice Board erected in 1998; *Church reroofed & exterior painted 1999; *Six of the unique green windows replaced; *Interior recarpeted; *Two ceiling fans installed; *Hand rail positioned at stepped entrance; *Two forms built for choir seating; *Exterior repainted for church centennial 2007; *Two pebble gardens with curbing & carpet roses established;*Reconcreting of path entrance & adjacent lawn levellng 2012: The first Community Church service in June 1997 was conducted by David Moxon & he continued to honour us with his presence, not only for our Christmas Carol services, but particularly for the Church`s centennial held in March 2008. Annually four services are held- Christmas Carol, Easter, Country Gospel & Family Theme. The Church Committee expresses its sincere gratitude to the loyal mixed congregations as we alternate between Anglican, Catholic, Bible Chapel & Cooperating Parish Ministers who generously give of their valuable time. This years Easter service is to be held on Sunday 13th April at 7.30pm.

Become a Competent Speaker JOIN PIAKO TOASTMASTERS! I always had a fear of standing in front of an audience and delivering a speech. For years it was beyond my ability and way, way out of my comfort zone. Then, after much prompting, I took the plunge and joined The Piako Toastmaster Club. After 6 speeches or so, my voice stopped trembling, I learnt to smile and actually began to enjoy the experience. No more trembling hand and voice, no more sleepless nights thinking about it. I have just completed my 30th speech and wish I had done this 20 years earlier. Join our friendly club and see what it can do for you.
