Last of the Summer Wine – live, on stage! Te Aroha theatregoers will this month have the opportunity to see, for only the second time in New Zealand, the stage version of the evergreen, popular British TV comedy series Last of the Summer Wine. The Te Aroha Dramatic Society’s production, which opens to the public on July 16 for a season of nine performances, is directed by veteran film and TV actor Ian Harrop. As soon as he saw the stage version was available in New Zealand the show’s director said he knew immediately he wanted to direct it here at the Little Theatre. “Napier Repertory beat me to it and performed it late last year while I was holidaying in the UK but I was determined to bring it here if I could find the cast,” he said. By a quirk of fate auditions threw up a trio of Pauls – Power, Ferguson and Worsley – to fill the roles of Foggy, Clegg and Compo but shortly after rehearsals began Paul Power (Foggy) had to pull out on medical grounds and was replaced by Anthony Gray. Two of the cast John (Gifford Bewmont) and Kate (Nora Batty) Remfry are former residents of Holmfirth in the UK where the TV series was filmed over the many years that it ran. “Obviously we haven’t got Brian Wilde, Peter Sallis and Bill Owen but I’m sure everyone who comes to see the show will recognise the Foggy, Clegg and Compo they’ve come to love,” said the director. “The author Roy Clarke has retained the gentle humour of the characters and put them in a farce

situation that will have audiences giggling the whole night through.” The action takes place in Clegg’s dining room, which Foggy has commandeered for the evening to put on a supper for Nora Batty and her niece Constance, on whom he hopes to make an impression, but the evening does not go as simply as he planned. Supporting roles in the play go to Stephen Low as the Flasher and Karen Graham as Nora’s niece Constance. In anticipation of popular demand the theatre has extended its usual season and provided a concession for block bookings of one free seat for every ten people booked. The show promises to be a hilarious night out for groups and clubs as well as individuals. Get your booking in early to avoid disappointment. Performances are July 17, 18, 19 (matinee at 2pm and evening performance) 23, 24, 25, 26. Bookings are now open and can be made at Piako Stationery Suppliers ph 884 9110.

In particular the dairy and forestry sectors stand out, with good increases in both price and production. A boost for the forestry sector is expected as a result of export demand for logs, and from growing domestic demand for sawn timber for housing. Export earnings for our seafood industry are also expected to increase. The full report is available at www.mpi.govt.nz/ sopi14

The rain on the plains.

This report was followed by more good news - this time from Statistics NZ - which says economic growth is continuing to pick up.

It’s taken many of us a while to dry out after the recent stormy weather. The Waihou River was as high as it’s been in many years and some roads were closed. Events like this can be worrying as the water levels rise and the wind and rain pummel roofs, gardens and paddocks. Our entire region was affected by the recent storms, particularly the farms up at the northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the clean-up in and around Te Aroha, and to our ever reliable emergency service providers. It’s time like this that we really see how strong our local communities are. Thankfully the sun managed to make an appearance for at least some of this year’s Fieldays. Agriculture and horticulture are crucial parts of the Coromandel electorate’s economy so I know many people from our region headed over to Mystery Creek. I spent the Friday there, manning the National Party stand. I am always amazed at the innovation and creativity on show. I was also pleased to note that two of the eight Rural Bachelor of the Year finalists are constituents; my congratulations to Jimmy Bentham from Te Aroha and Matthew Smith from Patetonga. We have the great beaches here, the great farms, and of course, some great rural blokes!

New Zealand is now the third-fastest growing developed economy in the world, with our GDP at 3.8% in the year ending in March. That’s more than in Australia, in the United States, or in the Euro zone. Those sorts of figures are echoed by the International Monetary Fund which has said New Zealand should expect strong and increasingly broad-based economic growth. It is predicting annual economic growth will peak at 3.5 per cent this year. I see their forecast as further evidence that the Government’s economic programme is taking New Zealand in the right direction. As the Finance Minister Bill English says, this is the latest in a series of encouraging reports on the New Zealand economy, confirming that we are well placed compared with most other developed countries.

Good news for Primary Industries I’m feeling very positive about the future of our agriculture and horticulture industries after looking at a new report from the Ministry of Primary Industries. The annual report - called Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries - provides a snapshot and a forecast for our major primary sectors. It makes fantastic reading. New Zealand’s primary sector exports are expected to reach record levels of $37.7b compared to last year – that’s a staggering $1.3b more than previously forecast.

Community Information Te Aroha

Many people who call in and see us assume that because it’s winter, we don’t get many visitors and therefore we are not busy. “Not many visitors then?” or “Bet I’m your first customer!” they may say at 11 o’clock in the morning. While this may be true and visitor numbers do drop over the cooler month’s we can assure you there is always something going on at i-SITE! Like most businesses that have quiet times, this is the time when plans are hatched for when we are too busy to think! So, here are a few projects we’re working on at the moment… 1.) The thing we hand out the most to visitors is a map of Te Aroha. We’re working on a brand new one which will feature points of interest to visitors and where to find places to stay and places to eat. We are looking at printing mid-end of July so you’ll be able to pop in and get your own copy for when visitors arrive – or just send them to us! 2.) To be a member of the i-SITE network we must adhere to their membership standards. We are assessed every two years by Qualmark, New Zealand’s independent quality assurance organisation. We are looking to beat our 93% endorsement score for 2012 so are working hard to make sure we have the visitor centre looking great and all our training up to date. 3.) Next month i-SITE staff across the Waikato are coming together for a ‘show and tell’ day where we each get to showcase our town to staff from other Visitor Centres. We are all local experts and this is a valuable networking opportunity. Here are a couple of projects we need your help with: 4.) Its AGM season for many community organisations and clubs and we are in the process of updating the database on our website. If you belong to a club or organisation you can go onto our website www.tearohanz.co.nz/Community and a.) See if your organisation is listed and b.) Ensure the contact details are correct and let us know of any changes. The same goes for our online Business A-Z. Jump in there and see if your business is listed and if you’d like to be included – please let us know! 5.) We are working on the Te Aroha Calendar for 2015 which will be packed with lovely Te Aroha photos and local events. These were so popular last year we sold out before Christmas. Once again we’re asking people to submit their favourite Te Aroha photos. If your photo is featured on the cover of our calendar, you’ll win yourself a voucher for the Te Aroha Mineral Spas or Leisure Pools – you choose! And if you have an event coming up next year, please let us know so we can include it in our calendar. And…all staff are enrolled in a He Papa Tikanga Maori course through Open Wanaga so feel free to pop in and korero – we need the practice! So, as you can see, there’s always something on the go at i-SITE!

TE AROHA

The recent storm was the topic of conversation across town as rumours quickly spread about the Te Aroha Bridge closing. The Waihou River reached 11.54 metres, just shy of the highest recorded river level of 11.72 metres in 1976, while this was significantly high the bridge was not at risk of being closed. We would like to remind everyone that during a storm or another civil defence emergency it’s important you stay informed with official information by: •

following us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ matamatapiakodistrictcouncil

checking www.mpdc.govt.nz

listening to The Hits 98.6FM.

There are also a few things you can do to help when bad weather strikes: •

secure your outdoor furniture

ring your power company if you are experiencing power outages

avoid driving or walking through flood waters

remove leaves from the gutters and stormwater grates outside your property and make sure leaves are swept from gardens and lawns so they don’t end up blown into gutters.

BUSINESS ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED

Subs are now due thanks to all those that have renewed their membership and welcome aboard to those new members. It looks like the membership is continuing to grow which is great, membership growth allows the association to keep promoting Te Aroha and supporting community events. Those that haven’t yet joined please contact myself or Sarah the cost is $230 for 12 month membership. We intend to publish the membership list next month so please make sure that your business is on the list. Council have commissioned a report to determine the most appropriate route for the cycleway to Matamata. Hopefully the completion of this report will finally get some direction to the project. Tourism is a great way to facilitate growth in our District it can provide opportunities and jobs for younger demographic. The Government are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on tourism and their middle earth campaign, the third movie in the trilogy is to be launched later this year and tourists want to spend time and money in our District. To make sure they do we need activities that keep them here for longer, as a District we can’t leave up to someone else we need to get in and make it happen for ourselves and the timing needs to be now. We all know our District has an ageing population and without initiatives that attract business and growth we will inevitability struggle to maintain our current level of services and lifestyle. It is important issue for our whole District. Council is the appropriate body’s to ensure that this District and our towns are actively looking at ways to grow and the Te Aroha Business Association will keep trying to convince Council that as a District we need to take such opportunities when we can. We have applied for several grants to ensure that the Te Aroha Cruise-in is bigger and better than last year. Fletch from Classic Restos, is now confirmed to be here to film an episode of the show. As always the Cruise-ing is a community event and Sarah will be looking for helpers as the time comes near. No doubt some of the previous helpers will be tapped on the shoulder again however if anyone is able to assist please contact Sarah to see how you can help. BA5 – these are on hold over the winter months however if someone has something to showcase about their business we are happy to assist. Next meeting 5.30pm July 8th at the RSA Shaun O’Neill, Chairman

Catherine Delahunty MP

Greetings to all Te Aroha locals and many thanks for this opportunity to communicate with you. I am delighted to be a Green list MP working in this electorate for the people, for our environment, and for the liveliness of our local economy. I am a mother and grandmother living in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames. I’ve spent most of my adult life in the Hauraki/Coromandel area – from working as a fleeco in a shearing gang to being on the Thames Coromandel Regional Development Council in the 1980s. I’m proud and privileged to now be in Parliament raising issues we all care about.

te aroha print ltd

My passion is for our beautiful environment and the people who live with the land – they’re the focus of my campaigning and work. It is such a privilege to support our wild places like New Chum beach and the clean-up of the toxic sites like Tui on Te Aroha mountain. I actively enjoy meetings and talking to local people about issues we all care about: education, mining, climate change, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, insulating our homes, and much more. I love our local markets and the popular bike trails and bush walks. My favourite activity, apart from climbing trees with my 5 year old grandson, is growing a vegetable garden. This year is especially busy with the election coming up on September 20. I appreciate hearing your views and I look forward to meeting more people working to support our region for the long term good of all. I’ll be visiting Te Aroha a lot over the coming months, holding cottage meetings and other events – I hope to be able to talk to all of you and listen to what you have to say.

Grumpy Old Man Writes. . . Remember the Gallipoli oak that was conspicuous by its absence last month? I had a most interesting visit from an old acquaintance recently who assured me he knew much more about the aforesaid Gallipoli oak than was apparent in any records about it. I recognised a bit of a twinkle in his eye as he related his story but I have no reason to doubt what he told me and knowing him from old and his knowledge of such matters I believed him implicitly. The oak, as we all know, was planted in 1915 by “the children of this district” to commemorate those who gave their lives in the Gallipoli campaign. It transpires that the specimen chosen was perhaps not quite the ideal candidate to remain standing proudly 100 years later and, sure enough, less than ten years after it was planted, Te Aroha was hit by one of its perennial storms and the ailing sapling suffered the fate of so many of its cousins before and since. Those responsible for the appearance of the domain at that time, saw the misfortune as a chance to replace the original with a sturdier specimen but chose to keep the substitution best left unremarked. And it remained so, except that one of those responsible for the substitution had chosen to confide the circumstances to my acquaintance adding that only “three or four people knew about it”. So it seems the symbol that had unexpectedly disappeared more recently, to the chagrin of some folk, was in fact an imposter! Maybe we can’t believe everything we take for granted around us, after all. I discovered just last week that the Bible that everyone swore on at the Te Aroha courthouse was in fact a dictionary. Hmmm

Next year is the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign. Wouldn’t it be an appropriate gesture if “the children of this district” were to plant a significantly healthier oak at an appropriate location in the domain that might still be standing to commemorate the bicentenary in 2115? I had to go to the airport recently and was silently praising the extension of the Waikato Expressway into the centre of Hamilton. It seems not everyone has discovered it yet, making for a relatively trouble-free trip. But it was a different story as I got further north. A car in the left lane was travelling about 95km/h and the car ahead of me had pulled out to overtake. I followed suit but the car ahead of me seemed less than inclined to accelerate in order to pass him with the result that both lanes were now blocked and remained so for the next several kilometres as they continued on side by side. Frustrated? You bet. Speaking of motorway driving, why, when the road signs indicate a long way in advance that the lanes ahead merge, do we still get smartarse drivers speeding up the outside to gain a few more places ahead in the queue? And, worse, why do the idiots forced to brake because of them up ahead pull back and allow them to make a last minute merge. Make ‘em wait, I say. I hesitate to say it, but, invariably the worst motorway manners seem to be in evidence between Auckland city and Papakura. If these people aren’t prepared to be patient why the hell did they choose to live so far away from civilisation and put up with this madness every day?

Waihou Community Hall - 100 years A rejuvenated 100 year old Waihou Community Hall buzzed with life on its birthday last Sunday. Descendents of the Early settler families and many who grew up in Waihou gathered to remember all the events and happenings held in the Community centre over 100 years. “The story of the Waihou Community Hall is a story of people” said Les Munro, Chairman of the Waihou Community Hall Committee. “A story of the people who built it, the people who maintain and rejuvenate it and above all, the people who use it.” The Waihou Hall started life as the Waihou Hall Company Limited and was opened by William Herries Member of Parliament on the 10 June 1914 just before World War I. As the centre of village life, the Hall was used as a sports venue, a meeting place at local dance evenings, and the place for family gatherings. Weddings Funerals and significant birthdays were all held in the Hall. 100 years later in 2014, people continue to gather in the Waihou Community Hall for sports, community events and family celebrations. Regular users include Indoor Bowls, the Piako Concert Brass Band, Rural Women NZ , Friday night Ballroom Dancing lessons, and monthly dance nights. The Sunday Celebration started with a Service in the neighbouring Undenominational Memorial Church, after which the gathering strolled in struggling sunshine over to the hall for several animated hours of chat and reminiscence. The formal proceedings were opened by Mayor Jan Barnes, followed by an enthusiastic address by Scott Simpson Member of Parliament. After an hour of mix and mingle in the filled to capacity hall, lunch was served and followed by a Te Aroha Dramatic Society presentation of Events over the 100 years . Written by Barbara Handford from material research by the Centenary Committee, and Directed by Jocelyn Legg, the series of skits and enactments evoked clear memories for the appreciative audience, and rounded off a memorable Centenary celebration. The Centenary Committee has gathered the history of the Waihou Community Hall onto a series of story boards which may be viewed in the carpark entry to the Hall and will remain as a permanent display for future users of this village facility. Gallipoli Oak

The Gallipoli Oak was planted on the Arbour Day, 15th June, plans are being made to plant another Oak tree on the same 1915, by the local school children to commemorate the return date in 2015 near the same site. of the soldiers who had been wounded in the war and were Submitted Te Aroha Museum beginning to return home to New Zealand. The teachers and children from the Primary and Secondary departments of the Te Aroha District High School and the Convent School attended the planting of the oak in the Domain. Addresses were delivered by the Chairman of the school committee, Mr J.M.Bell; School Secretary, Rev. W.H.Edgell; the Mayor, Mr W.Norrel; Mr Ralph Somers; and G.H.Cornish. A lesson was given by the Headmaster, Mr Alfred Burton. “The committee had decided that only one tree be planted, and an oak would commemorate the return of the first of New Zealand’s brave soldiers, wounded in the Great War. Referring to the Oak, Mr Bell said it was an emblem of the Nation; the British ships of oak were responsible for many great feats in days of old. It was the stoutness of our ships of oak, and the grand sailors which made Britain. “Mistresses of the seas” The children would remember the British oak planted this morning was to mark the gallant deeds of British men at Gallipoli”. The tree was planted by Miss Margaret Bruce, Miss Ilma Robinson, Master J.Baker, Master Percy Watson, under the guidance of Mr H.Dalton, head-gardener of the Domain who also gave a lesson in tree planting. In November, 1915, a memorial was unveiled. This was placed on the tree guard (the white picket fence) surrounding the Gallipoli Oak. It was unveiled in the presence of the local school children from Te Aroha, and representatives of the town. Mr J.M.Bell, Chairman of the school committee in his address to the children said that they had the privilege of putting the first guard around a tree in the Domain and it would be nice for strangers coming to the district to see the memorial. Rev. W.H.Edgell – The guard was made of heart totara and the workmanship was a credit to the boys who had made it under the direction of Mr A.T.Smith, technical instructor at the school. The memorial tablet was unveiled by Miss Margaret Bruce and Miss Ilma Robinson, with the troop of boy scouts under Master Cecil Mace, saluting; the children afterwards sang a verse of the National Anthem and gave three rousing cheers. The inscription on the tablet read “The Gallipoli Oak, planted by the children of this district in the year of 1915, to the undying memory of their countrymen who fought for the liberties on the Gallipoli Peninsula“ had been executed by Master Percy Watson in a very credible manner. Time went by and the surround fell into disrepair and was removed, the plaque was replaced with a wooden one and in 2012 a brass tablet was placed under the tree. The Gallipoli Oak started to show signs of dying and a tree surgeon was engaged to save the tree by judicial pruning to Top: Gallipoli Oak with white picket fence c1925 no avail and by 2013 the tree had not recovered and was in Middle: Second plaque danger of falling down in a storm. Active Aroha July 2014 Get your Trail Legs On.

and Rest Home (Partnering with our Community) Our News for the month A huge thank you to Mountain Lions, RSA and all the local sponsors - (businesses and individuals) who made this possible. Over $3,000 was raised to help us buy a new shower trolley and this combined with $2,500 from Lions in Te Aroha has gone a long way to the total of $7,500 that we need. The support from everyone who came to the evening was tremendous. The evening ended with an auction and there a few good bargains!!! and some generous and spirited bidding especially from a group of rather younger and good looking men and women.!!!

It’s time to enter the Trail Trilogy’s first event - Tirohia to Te Aroha! There are loads of relay options if you want it to be a social outing – you can enter a family team, a primary or secondary school team and women. Each leg is between 4 and 5km long so achievable even for littlies. The 5km option is all off road so you can drop your child at Mangaiti Hall and wait for them at the Te Aroha train station – the road crossing will be supervised and the course shouldn’t trouble even the navigationally challenged! You can enter online at www.sportwaikato.org.nz or pick up an entry form from the i-Site or if you want to enter a big group please contact me loub@sportwaikato.org.nz or 027 226 5297.

Community News ROTARY NEWS FOR JUNE Rotary year is finishing this week. We will be saying goodbye to Robin Reid as our president and welcoming two presidents for this coming year. Andrew Honeyfield is president for the remainder of 2014 and Neil Andrews takes over from him for January-June 2015. I had been polishing the chain of office on Wednesday and was amazed at the history that was held within the chain. Our club was inducted in 1945 which means that it will be our 80th anniversary this next year. Each of the presidents from that date on is engraved on the chain with the year that they served in office. This is like seeing a page out of the life of Te Aroha. The first president was Bill Clark, then McLeod, Lawrence, Fitzpatrick, Halligan, Annabell, Mackie, Nicholls, Carter, Bowler, Johns, Potter, Carroll, Gilchrist and so it goes on. All these names speak of the settlement of Te Aroha and are reflected in street names and families who are still in our town. Maybe we should be touching base with these families about becoming Rotarians. I am sure that some are not aware of the fact that their fathers were instrumental in a lot of the monuments and items donated around town. Sienna Wells, our international youth exchange from Durango, Colorado has settled in to New Zealand life and is making the most of her time here. She only has one month left of her stay and we will be sorry to see her go as she has been a breath of fresh air. If anyone is interested in learning more about becoming a Rotarian, we meet at the Te Aroha Club on Wednesday nights at 5.30 for 6pm or you can contact the secretary on the above phone number.

TE AROHA COELIAC/GLUTENFREE SUPPORT GROUP

SCHOOL 50th ANNIVERSARY Stanley Avenue School is gearing up for its 50th jubilee to be held on 19th and 20th September this year. Interest in the jubilee is growing in intensity, with the Stanley Avenue School website and jubilee facebook page receiving high numbers of visitors on a daily basis, and enquiries coming from all parts of New Zealand and Australia. Class and sports photos that are being placed periodically onto the facebook page are connecting former students and staff, and are generating conversations between those featured. Comments like: “Oh dear, that haircut, thanks mum!”, “So Cute”, “Check out the fashion” and “Think that’s my sister in that photo” are being posted. Meanwhile preparations are well underway for a great weekend. It will all begin on Friday 19th with a reflection day at school featuring an open day hosted by current pupils and teachers starting at 11am. That evening will be ‘The Icebreaker Meet n Greet’ to be held from 7pm – 10pm in the school Recreation Centre. This will provide an opportunity to chat over refreshments and nibbles prior to the feature events planned for the Saturday. Current pupils and teenage past pupils are not being forgotten.

Something special is lined up for them on the Friday night Call in and see us for friendly and efficient service also, with the ‘Big Marquee Big Screen’ evening from 7.30pm – 10pm for past Stanley Ave teenagers. Prior to that, current pupils will be treated to a couple of ‘Big Marquee Discos’ for the junior and senior party-goers respectively. The official opening will take place from 1pm – 4pm on Saturday 20th September, with a cake, speeches, photos and entertainment throughout the afternoon. This will be followed by ‘The Main Event Dinner n Dance’ to be held in the big marquee that will be hired and set up at the school for the occasion. Happy hour will begin at 6pm, followed by a BBQ style dinner from 7-9pm, and the band playing in the Recreation Centre from 8.30pm until 12.30pm. Registrations are now open for the weekend of festivities. Early bird registrations will cost just $55 per head for all events inclusive of the Friday night, Saturday and Saturday night. Registrations received after 1st June will cost $65, again for an all-inclusive weekend. The cost for teenagers to attend the Friday night event is just $5 and this provides free access to Saturday’s activities also. All current pupils and families, as well as immediate and notso-immediate pupils, teachers and volunteers are invited. Registration packs are available from the Jubilee tab on the school website at www.stanleyave.school.nz or by contacting the Stanley Ave School Office (07) 884 8479 or Principal Stuart Armistead 021 233 0293.

Our healthy eating program is based on ‘in season’ supermarket foods that is suitable for the entire family, so not cooking separate meals each night. We won’t tell you what to eat at each meal, but will advise you on the food groups necessary at each meal and allow you the freedom with some guidance from us, which foods are most suitable. One of the biggest myths with weight management is that you will have to restrict all the foods that you enjoy – this cannot be further from the truth, sustaining a healthy lifestyle is about creating new and positive habits for the future. Visit us at Te Aroha Body Clinic from July 27th. ContaCt; ph 07 855 7075 ambermaisey@healthyinspirations.co.nz

Community News WAIHOU HALL "100 YEARS" The village of Waihou came alive on Sunday 15th June when the descendants of the early Waihou settlers, local residents, friends and official invited guests gathered to celebrate this historic occasion. On behalf of the Waihou Hall Centenary Committee, I sincerely thank everyone who took part in our celebrations. To our generous sponsors (whose names are recorded in our souvenir programme) and to the people who kindly contributed photos and information as well as those who researched vigorously through early news reports for relevant material, we thank you. This information was placed on display boards (fully sponsored by Pirawai Contractors) which will be displayed in the hall's entry as a permanent display for future generations to view. A Centenary Video is available to enable youy to reflect on the past as well as the celebration of the present. Please contact Carlie on 07 883 1998 or email her at carlie@stonewallproductions.co.nz should you wish to order a copy. The event was a success and was made memorable by each one of you who attended. Once again, our thanks for your support. We hope your memories of the day are happy ones! Ernie Bygrave Chairman, Waihou Hall Centenary Committee

Become a Competent Speaker JOIN PIAKO TOASTMASTERS! I always had a fear of standing in front of an audience and delivering a speech. For years it was beyond my ability and way, way out of my comfort zone. Then, after much prompting, I took the plunge and joined The Piako Toastmaster Club. After 6 speeches or so, my voice stopped trembling, I learnt to smile and actually began to enjoy the experience. No more trembling hand and voice, no more sleepless nights thinking about it. I have just completed my 30th speech and wish I had done this 20 years earlier. Join our friendly club and see what it can do for you. We meet at 7:30pm every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month at Morrinsville Senior Citizens Hall.
