Historic keynotes

Ian Harrop

A piece of history dating back to almost 60 years before Capt James Cook first sighted New Zealand can be found right here in Te Aroha barely 100m from the clock tower. The pipe organ in St Mark’s Anglican Church is one of ten organs commissioned by Queen Anne and completed in 1712. It is believed to be one of, if not THE, oldest organ in the southern hemisphere. The story of how such an historic piece found its way to its present-day site is a fascinating one and is related regularly in the church’s Organ Tour programme. For the past five years or so the Organ Tour programme has been running to provide funds for the upkeep of the 300-year-old historic instrument. The programme caters for group visits (20 or more) and incorporates concert material by the Rainbow Singers, a narration of the history of the organ and renditions on the organ by parish organist Betty Collins. The programme, lasts an hour to an hour and a half, and includes morning or afternoon tea and at $10 per head is considered excellent value by those visiting. Response by visiting patrons from places such as Tauranga, Hamilton, Waihi, Auckland, Cambridge and other centres has invariably been enthusiastic. The church was built in the mid-1920s and consecrated in 1926. When it was completed, no provision had been made for an organ since parishioners had been stretched to the limit to raise the necessary funds for the First World War memorial peace church. Parishioner Mrs Maud Elizabeth St Barbe Wayne remembered an old church organ that had been dismantled and stored in the basement of her parents’ home in Shropshire, England. She contacted her mother and arrangements were made to ship it off to New Zealand to be given as a gift to the new church. Upon its arrival in Auckland the Vestry of the church, still struggling to pay form the completion of the church,

said it could not afford the transportation cost. In consequence Mrs St Barbe Wayne agreed to meet the transport costs herself and the organ was installed in the church in 1927. The organ has received much praise from visiting organists and has been played in concert by such renowned artists as Dame Gillian Weir, Douglas Mews of Wellington, John Wells, Indra Hughes and James Tibbles of Auckland, and Rachael Griffiths-Hughes of Hamilton. Organ tours for groups of 20 or more can be arranged by contacting Liz ph 8849292. Provision can be made for smaller groups to join pre-booked sessions for larger groups.

Scott Simpson Local MP Te Aroha – a town on the up. It’s great to see that the Hauraki Rail Trail is having such a positive effect on tourism in our area. I read with pleasure recent optimistic comments from the Te Aroha Business Association chairman Shaun O’Neill about the rebirth of the town’s tourism industry, and the extra investment that’s attracting. The Hauraki Rail Trail is now two years old, and it’s providing a unique view of our towns and countryside to tourists from here and overseas. Fifty percent more people took to the rail trail in the first three months of this year, compared to last year. There’s a huge spin off for other parts of the town, with hundreds more visitors choosing to spend their money here. It means more people soaking in the mineral pools, more people enjoying leisurely lunches in the town’s cafes, more travellers resting their heads in our hotels. I think Te Aroha is a charming place and I am delighted that more and more people are discovering that for themselves. Confidence in the economy is something people in Te Aroha are always keen to talk to me about. With the new Fonterra plant just down the road in Waitoa and a new Events Centre in the pipeline, we can see that Te Aroha is certainly a town on the up. In fact, this positive buzz about the growing economy is being felt across the country. The Finance Minister Bill English says that if New Zealand reaches its forecast economic growth over the next four years, the average annual wage is expected to increase by $7,500 to around $62,200. The Finance Minister said Treasury expects the economy to grow by between 2 per cent and 4 per cent a year out to 2018. The National government understands that what really matters to people in Te Aroha, as around the country, are jobs, higher incomes and opportunities to get ahead. The Finance Minister said forecasts show that around 170,000 more people will be working by 2018. That’s what a sustainably growing economy actually means for hardworking New Zealanders.

Careful on the roads

Scott Simpson MP FOR COROMANDEL

“A large part of my job is helping people. Please contact my office for an appointment.”

Tel/Fax: 07 868 3529

mpcoromandel@parliament.govt.nz www.scottsimpson.co.nz Authorised by Scott Simpson, 614 Pollen St, Thames and funded by the Parliamentary Service

Coromandel electorate grows in logical changes The Coromandel electorate is now a little bit bigger. Coromandel MP Scott Simpson has welcomed people who will join the electorate from Waikato, as part of changes to electoral boundaries. Around 1,400 residents on the west side of the Firth of Thames will now be included in the Coromandel electorate for this year’s general election, including the people of Kaiaua and Mangatangi. “The changes mean that everyone who lives within the Hauraki District Council’s area is now united in the Coromandel electorate. And that’s logical,’ Mr Simpson said. Scott Simpson MP said “I think the Boundaries Commission has done a good job. It makes sense for the Coromandel boundary to include the part of Hauraki District which was previously not part of the electorate.”

LIVE IT, LOVE IT, PLAY IT

We are lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country that many other people are only able to visit. After a couple of long weekends and school holidays, our towns and roads have been busy. More visitors also mean heavier traffic across our Coromandel and Waikato regions. The Easter road toll was four. Let’s make sure there aren’t further tragedies on our roads as people get back to work and school. Watch your speed and following distances, and drive to the conditions. Let’s make sure these holidays are memorable for the right reasons. More information from Parliament and around the electorate follow me on Facebook or Twitter @ scottsimpsonmp

AMAZING MURAL AT ABC TE AROHA ABC Te Aroha is very proud of its new Whānau mural .What was a plain black wall has been transformed. The centre wanted a mural that was a true reflection of everyone’s ideas and we started by gathering ideas of parents, grandparents, children and teachers. One aspect the centre wanted to include in the mural was the unique aspects of our beautiful town our mountain and river. We also wanted to include the Kidicorp boy and girl, and some pukeko to represent our 4 year old transition group. A draft drawing was then displayed and everyone was encouraged to give feedback and further suggestions From these suggestions we included a sun with Maori designs, pukeko in the local rugby team’s colours- cobras and Waihou .Alex Lynch, one of the staff sons, painted the mural over the Christmas holidays. On February the 27th the centre held a mural celebration, to celebrate the achievements of a centre project where every ones ideas are respected and valued. The Mayor Jan Barnes was a part of our celebration which included the children singing three songs and, Father Tama Hepi blessing the food before everyone enjoyed a shared meal. ABC Te Aroha is situated at 72 Rewi Street. Operating hours are 7.30-5.30 Monday to Friday and is open all year except for public holidays, the

centre has two rooms one, for under twos and the other for over twos. In the next couple of weeks the centre is renovating the under two room and this will provide a bigger space .We will also be upgrading the over two playground .The centre can be contacted on 8848342

Grumpy Old Man Writes. . . Let me set the record straight by saying I am NOT grumpy all the time. In fact I have just spent three of the most enjoyable weeks of my life celebrating fifty wonderful years of marriage. The celebrations were capped by a fantastic (if tiring) trip around the South Island, no one could have asked for anything more. Mind you… sometimes things are a little less than perfect. I have to confess that on the few occasions I go on holiday one of my major concerns is having internet connection. I don’t have some fancy i-phone or tablet but I do have a laptop so that I can keep up with emails, banking and spending. Trouble is it requires Wi-fi connection. Our first stop at Rangiora was at a relatively inexpensive motel where I was delighted to discover Wi-fi was free. Bravo, top marks. Our next stop at Lake Tekapo was a beautiful flat overlooking the lake but the elderly couple who ran it clearly were not into IT. She assured me they were still struggling to get internet connection of any description. Hmm. Our stop in Queenstown was at a notable hotel whose name was not unfamiliar to me. It had all mod cons and clearly they were into IT in a big way. There was provision in the room for internet connection but when trying to connect you discover all too quickly you’d signed yourself up for a deal that costs an arm and a leg for the minutes you use. Worse, whenever I tried it I couldn’t connect. In the end I went down to the foyer and asked about it. “Ah, said the attendant all you need is Wi-fi and that is only $3.” I took the deal and ignored the original deal, assuming

he’d signed me out of that for the cheap Wi-fi deal. By the end of the second day I noticed a chap in the foyer using his laptop. My inquiry elicited the information that Wi-fi in the foyer is FREE. Bit late to find that out! Next day went to pay the bill and the additional cost for internet connection cost more than a few arms and legs – I’d been charged for every single minute of use on each of the deals. Now I’m grumpy!! Our ferry crossing to the Mainland was great, weather was fine and sea smooth. Our return trip was, alas, just the opposite really rough and awful weather. Yer takes yer chance and yer gets what yer get. No problem there. Have you noticed, though, no matter how swift you are, all the front seats (with the best view) in each lounge are taken when you get there? Four backpacks and a sprawled out young man seemed to have claimed each of the various nests of tables and chairs. I couldn’t help think about this when, upon our return, I had to attend a funeral at church. Everyone turned out to support the family but nobody wanted to sit in the front seats up there by them. Interesting! Finally, it may be my imagination, but ever since my comment about checkouts at Countdown I have had little or no trouble getting through quickly. If it isn’t my imagination, good on yer!

Autumn leaves are starting to fall Leaving the trees, lean, mean and rather tall With signs of winters entrance yet to come And with the annual firewood yet to be brought.... ...............................stacked and work done But the mornings now are fresh and sharp As summers light gives way to the ever coming winters dark Every season leaves a memory in your mind Whether it be hum drum, enjoyable or of an unusual different kind Be it, what ever it was, then and now Mother Nature provides an issue whether it be when and how. As we the inhabitants move along With this an everchanging seasons song. So enjoy the flavours of the season And strive to be happy is the reason As the year rolls on and around For the 4 seasons is ours to comply And with versatility is ours to be found. So keep on keeping on as daylight saving Has the last word here As autumn reminds us to be ever ready, Resilient and of good cheer! Noel Hinge, Te Aroha

Help! My cat can’t pee! Every year we have cats in at the clinic who are struggling to pee. Not only is this an uncomfortable condition for your cat but also distressing to watch. Sometimes the problem is an uncomplicated bladder infection but sometimes it’s a blocked bladder which is a life threatening condition! Bladders can become blocked when crystals form in the bladder. These crystals can congregate and then get stuck in the urethra when a cat tries to pee. Fat, stressed male cats on a poor diet are most commonly affected.

What will I see? If your cat has a blocked bladder it may be repeatedly squatting and unable to pass any urine. They may also be yowling in pain and appear painful in their abdomen. This means they might be guarding this area and crying out when touched.

What should I do about it? Call the vet! Cats that have a completely blocked bladder need emergency treatment as, if left, the build-up of urine can cause the bladder to rupture. This will allow toxins to leak into the abdomen which is fatal.

How can it be treated? The bladder needs to be decompressed by passing a catheter into the bladder. The bladder is then flushed and your cat is administered fluid therapy, antibiotics and pain relief. Cats must stay in the hospital until we are happy that they can pee comfortably, which is sometimes a few days. Unfortunately, cats that block once can easily block again so it is important to discuss ways to prevent it with your vet when you get your pet back.

Is there any way to prevent it? Weight management and providing a calm environment for your cat to relax in are the best tools for preventing a blocked bladder. Higher quality foods also reduce crystals building up in the bladder.

TIME SIREN AT TERMINUS STREET Te Aroha’ s time siren at the corner of Terminus St. and Lawrence Ave. was built at Balclutha in the South Is. by Mr. Bill Kean and his son Verdon, for use by the E.P.S. (Emergency Precaution Scheme) a N.Z. wide organization set up during 1939. While at Balclutha it was powered by a 4 cylinder Chev. engine. The Kean family came to Te Aroha in 1946, bringing their siren with them and getting it erected in either late Dec. of that year or early 1947. This was achieved with the guidance of the Borough Engineer Mr. Norman Annabel after suitable wooden power poles were obtained through the Thames Valley Electric Power Board and after a small “deal” was made with Mr. R. Sprague the Engineer. Mr. Sprague wanted to purchase a new car from Thames Valley Motors which Bill Kean now owned. The siren then needed to be wired so Mr. Keith Brimblecombe was engaged to complete this task. The actual time signals were and still are triggered from the old Borough Electrical Dept. Substation nearby. Many years later the siren broke down and was not in use for some time. A great number of people had strong thoughts on its repair or not. The repair won the day and Mr. Don Workman of Te Aroha Tractor and Small Engines got it working again and then after a small hiccough when nesting birds once again stopped our siren. Now like before it is sounded five days a week at 8am, 12noon 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Our siren is an icon of our town. Many thanks to Mr. V. Kean of Te Puke for information on the siren.

WAIHOU COMMUNITY HALL 100YEARS OLD. The Waihou Community Hall will turn 100 years old on the 14th June 2014, and the local people are gearing up for a bumper celebration. Waihou was originally laid out to be the main town in Eastern Waikato and many families established their homes and businesses there. Original settlers included the Jacksons, the Coopers, the Rickabys, Rutherfords, Kyds, McCabes, Mikkelsens and many others. Many descendents of these settlers still remain in the Waihou area, and provide living histories of the community that waxed and waned around the Hall over the last 100 years. With the rail head set at Waihou to serve settlement in the area, the growth of the Waihou town seemed assured…. until gold was found at Wairongamai!!!! People immediately voted with their pockets and the rest is history. However Waihou was well started and growing with the first Hall in the district serving as community meeting place, school, church and Sunday school. 100 years on, this ongoing story of the Hall and the community it serves is what the Waihou Centenary Committee is planning to celebrate. If you have family stories and photos that are part of that history and in particular associated with the role that the Waihou Hall played in that history the committee led by Ernie Bygraves and Marie Kidd wants to hear from you please contact Ernie on (07) 884 8414.

PRACTISE YOUR WEDDING DANCE AT WAIHOU. We went to the wedding of our Grandson last week and the festivities that followed the speeches, started with the bridal Foxtrot! It was a dance of love, performed with wooden steps and was just rescued by the clear adoration that the two dancers felt for each other. So tradition still has place in the celebrations that still matter to us all. Each Friday in the Waihou Community Hall couples may learn the basics of ballroom dancing and each third Friday of the Month a regular dance evening provides for a fun way to bring the learning to life. Any couples interested in coping with performing at their approaching wedding would find this venue a great place to learn and conquer the basics. The Dance Evening includes waltzes, foxtrots, sequence, line, some latin dances and plenty of “dance as the music takes you” for the “free expressionistas” among us. Set in a relaxed café arrangement of candle lit tables where friends can enjoy catching up, the evening offers a mixture of socialising and good cardio vascular exercise. The Ballroom @ Waihou evening is held each third Friday of the month through the winter and costs $5.00 per head. A plate and BYO provide refreshments and supper.

QR BAR CODE AND INTERPRETATIVE SIGNAGE FOR TE AROHA. Submitted by Noel Harvey-Webb Te Aroha has few interpretative signs to inform and stimulate visitor interest. Conventional Interpretative Signage can be expensive to construct, maintain and develop. Computer technology using the web, smart phones and QR (Quick Response) bar codes is increasingly used to supplement conventional posters, signs and advertisements. QR Codes can target any information available on the web. The QR Codes can be placed where ever they can be scanned by a smart phone:- think buildings, waterfalls, geysers, river, bush, town and surrounds brochures, maps, photos, plaques, posters, signs, museum exhibits, paving, brickwork, Clothing (Tee Shirts), business cards, tattoos, tombstones plus!!!! My recommendation is they should be colour coded – black and white for business and commercial, brown and white history and green and white nature . The targeted web pages can be widely stored – Wikipedia, youtube, council, commercial, museums, government (think DOC, Environment Waikato), Trusts (think Hauraki Cycle Way). Much of the target data is already available, more needs to be transferred and transformed from existing computer storage. In New Zealand, tourism developments are proposed for the Hauraki Cycleway, Karangahake Gorge, Auckland Waterfront, Tongariro Crossing and Waikato River Trails. Examples. Waiorongomai Butler's Incline. Installing Winches. (Youtube)

FUTURE TE AROHA. May Aroha Festival

and Rest Home (Partnering with our Community) From Your Community Hospital In March we celebrated International Care Assistants’ week with a morning tea and a special individual gift. Te Aroha has a very special team of care assistants who work hard to ensure that each patient or resident receives the very best personal care and emotional support. Most of the care assistants have been born and have grown up in Te Aroha and know the families and friends of our patients and residents. This international day was a way of recognising these efforts. Sylvia Casella-Mahon, Facility Manager, comments “the hospital and rest home are communities within a community. Many of our patients, residents and their families have recognised the value of this small community hospital as a place where everyone is welcome, where there is laughter and sadness, grief and celebration.” Comments have come back to us via satisfaction forms and surveys on the commitment of the staff, the warm spirit of the environment and the high standard of nursing care. Some survey respondents have stated that they don’t know what they would do if the Te Aroha hospital wasn’t there and they hope it will keep going. It is not until we have a loved one who needs our services that we really stop and think about life in Te Aroha without a hospital, rest home or day club. Our Hospital will be embarking on a series of fund raising activities over the next year to help us support this precious asset and to ensure financial sustainability in a sector that is underfunded, with the latest increase from Government at 1% and operational costs rising upwards to 20% annually. There are many ways you can help us; as a volunteer during the day for an hour or more, becoming a financial member at $20.00 per year, support with a financial donation or a bequest. Help support us to look after you when you most need us.

Active Aroha May 2014 – SAVE THE DATES I am very excited to be in the initial planning stages of a the Trail Trilogy ‘ a series of 3 fun runs/walks on the Hauraki Rail Trail building from a 14 km Tirohia to Te Aroha leg via a 22km Waihi to Paeroa and finishing with the 30km Paeroa to Thames. Entry categories include various teams (work based, women only, primary and secondary schools) and individual walkers and runners. Since then the Aroha Quartet have received critical acclaim throughout New Zealand and abroad, with invitations including the ISA International Chamber Music Festival in Austria, the prestigious Huntingdon Festival in Australia and their second tour to China in 2013. Two founding members, violinist Haihong Liu and viola player Zhongxian Jin were among China’s most successful chamber musicians. THERE’S NOTHING TRIVIAL ABOUT THIS CLUB! Inspired by the idea of a Lions International World Lunch Relay in April, members of Te Aroha Mountain Lions Club, decided to hold a lunch with a difference. They chose a 1930’s “Downton Abbey’ theme incorporating the gracious living of that period. Members were encouraged to dress in style and the planning committee set to work collating the bone china tea sets, silver ware, and linen needed to set the scene. Over thirty members, husbands and family members attended the lunch on a brilliant late summer’s day in the country garden setting of Lions members, Philippa and Mark Davey. Many of the member’s husbands are in Te Aroha Lions Club so they too entered into the spirit of the occasion. After a welcome by President, Wanda Brittain, and a Quick Quiz to test the guests’ knowledge of the period, a delicious finger-food lunch was served. Afterwards guests were able to L-R Philippa Davey, Sue Ferris, Wanda Brittain, Leah Routen and try their skills with some of the garden games such as croquet, Catherine Cossar Te Aroha Athletics Club, who lost so much in the way of putting, marbles or throwing the horseshoes or simply relax equipment, trophies and uniforms in the clubhouse fire last and enjoy themselves. OUR VILLAGE GARDEN: TE KETE 0 TE AROHA INC. News from your local Community Garden, well another very successful season, very pleasing to help the Hospital and Food Bank, though it would have been nice to have had some rain. The public plot would like to see more people enjoying the fruits of our labour, a nice variety of vegetables are grown there for everyone. A big thank you to the Lions for painting the front fence, very smart. Congratulations to the winner of our raffle on Domain Day, orange star 23A, well done Flynn. We have a Buddies system, which means newcomers have help with any problems or questions they might need to ask, contact Janet 8848936 who will arrange for a buddy to meet up with you, it’s a really good time to plant your winter crops. Sundays 1pm to 4pm is our regular working bee where everyone catches up with one another, with a cuppa and a chat. Also a huge thank you to the Donor of the $100 for us to raffle at Countdown, the winning ticket number was 33F yellow star, congratulations Rod.

Thanks to funding from the Creative Communities Scheme, the TA Community Choir was able to begin a series of inspiring vocal workshops. The first held late last month featured two international vocal professionals - Kevin Mark Trail and Sharlene Hector. Based on their years of music industry experience they injected a vitality and enthusiasm which will have a long lasting impact on the groups sound, harmonising and performance. The workshop focussed on the Katy Perry song "Firework" which was learnt completely in the session - all harminies, rhythms and melody. Kevin will return to run song writing and music production workshops, as well as continuing his ongoing relationship with the Choir. A special concert is being planned where Kevin will perform a range of material written over the past decade. The Choir is busy preparing for MUSICMIX, the second day of the Te Aroha Arts Festival at Queen's Birthday Weekend. The choir is open to all enthusiastic singers of all ages and currently has up to 26 members aged 14 upwards. No audition - just come along Wednesday 6.30pm to the Physiotherapy Hall on Rewi Street. Call 07 884 8938 for further information.

I always had a fear of standing in front of an audience and delivering a speech. For years it was beyond my ability and way, way out of my comfort zone. Then, after much prompting, I took the plunge and joined The Piako Toastmaster Club. After 6 speeches or so, my voice stopped trembling, I learnt to smile and actually began to enjoy the experience. No more trembling hand and voice, no more sleepless nights thinking about it. I have just completed my 30th speech and wish I had done this 20 years earlier. Join our friendly club and see what it can do for you. We meet at 7:30pm every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month at Morrinsville Senior Citizens Hall.
