Red Cross – 75 years of community service Anyone regularly driving around the district can’t help but have noticed the Red Cross Community Service vans which seem to be running an endless shuttle service between Te Aroha and Hamilton. The Te Aroha Red Cross has two vans which provide a vital service for the elderly and infirm taking them to medical appointments and clinics at Waikato Hospital daily. Understandably the vans clock up a substantial mileage and replacement is necessary on a regular basis. They are housed in a garage that was created by converting space under the RSA when funding became available after they vacated the St John building. The service is operated by a very willing band of drivers with Kerry McKenzie, the van co-ordinator, and Viv Spedding doing a great job of looking after the vans and organising the hospital transport. The Te Aroha Red Cross committee is currently targeting a $40,000 fundraising programme to buy a new Toyota van that will provide a much more comfortable ride for users. “We hope the community will support us in this effort as the ageing population in the town is making the demand for our service more and more needed,” secretary Judy Finn said. The Te Aroha branch of Red Cross was formed 75 years ago this year and has been providing a wonderful service for the community ever since. On July 4 this year it is holding a special celebration to mark its 75th anniversary. In addition to the community service vans, Meals on Wheels continues to meet the needs of the community picking up and delivering meals provided by the Te Aroha Community Hospital. Thirty volunteers give their

time on a regular basis with Leila Shanley co-ordinating the operation. A further service provided is the hiring of medical equipment in times of emergency. Crutches, wheelchairs showerstools and other aids can be hired for a short time by those in need for a donation to Red Cross. A phome call is all that is needed to have the necessary items delivered to your door. Red Cross also supports appeals from overseas whenever its bank balance permits although more and more is being done to help locally. The branch meets monthly at Future Te Aroha on the first Friday of the month at 1.30pm and all are welcome to attend. Meetings usually have a guest speaker followed by a cup of tea and a time of fellowship and talk. Meeting the cost of a new van will take a special effort and Red Cross is hoping that the community it has served so well for 75 years will be prepared to come to the party with some serious fundraising.

Scott Simpson Local MP Time never stands still for our hardworking dairy farmers and their families. Though the cows are dried off, many farmers are now unpacking, having moved to new pastures over the weekend. I hope Gypsy Day went without a hitch for those of you who’ve relocated. Fieldays are also coming up in Hamilton and I expect many Te Aroha folk will be heading there to find out what’s new in rural life, both for work and play. It’s also a great social occasion. When I’m at Fieldays looking at all the exhibits I am always amazed by the innovation and inspiration I see within our agriculture sector on show at Mystery Creek. No one wonder we are world leaders in the dairy industry. We all know there’s big overseas demand for New Zealand’s fantastic agricultural and horticultural products. One huge asset for “Brand New Zealand” is our clean and green image. It’s something we must protect and cherish, and that’s why I am so pleased the Minister for the Environment is having a good look into how waste is managed here. The Minister, Amy Adams, has released a discussion document on options to improve how some waste products are managed; those include agrichemicals and farm plastics, electrical and electronic equipment, tyres, and refrigerants and other synthetic greenhouse gases. She’s asking whether those four “waste streams” are the right priorities, and whether there are other priorities the Government should look at along with these four. At the moment, we have voluntary schemes. Since the Government set up the Waste Minimisation Act (WMA), we’ve encouraged voluntary product stewardship.

Eleven schemes have been accredited. This means that people and business involved with a product also take responsibility for its environmental effects, for the product’s lifecycle. As a result of these schemes, more than 70,000 tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfill for recycling or safe destruction. It’s a great start, but there’s a lot more to be done. We need to be concerned about potential harm from tonnes of waste being dumped into landfill. Those include things like obsolete cell phones, old computers, and tyres. After this consultation, the next steps will be to consider in detail a range of options, including those recommended by industry working groups. Only after that would the Government consider what action, if any, to propose. If you want to find out more and have your say, the discussion document can be found here: www.mfe.govt. nz/publications/waste/priority-waste-streams-may14/ index.html More information from Parliament and around the electorate follow me on Facebook or Twitter @ scottsimpsonmp

WAIHOU HALL CELEBRATES CENTENARY Ian Harrop On Wednesday, June 10, 1914 The Hon WH Herries accompanied by a dazzling array of dignitaries declared the Waihou Hall open before a crowd of 500 people. It was a significant event in the life of, what was then a thriving township. Mr Herries commented that Waihou with its new Post Office, new pub, and now a new hall might next be requesting a railway station, much to the excitement of those looking on. On Sunday June 15 a series of celebrations will mark the centenary of that event. The day begins with a 10.30am church service at the Waihou interdenominational Church with Mr R Jackson officiating. At 11am the official party will accompanied to the hall for light refreshments where they can mix and mingle with Tracey Mackay master of ceremonies. The official welcome will take place at 12.15pm with Mayor Jan Barnes and Scott Simpson MP for Coromandel giving addresses. This will be followed at

WAIHOU HALL 100 YEARS 15th JUNE 2014 12.30pm with Grace followed by lunch and the cakecutting. At 1.30pm the Te Aroha Dramatic Society will present a series of vignettes highlighting events of the district during the past hundred years. The celebrations will draw to a conclusion at 2.30pm when Les Munro, chairman of the Waihou Events Society leads the closing ceremony.

Community Information Te Aroha

Winter’s nip is in the air and the cold frosty mornings can bring clear, sunny days – perfect for getting out for a walk. We are lucky to have so many opportunities for walking, hiking and cycling in our district and a crisp winter’s morning is perfect for a walk up the mountain. Mt Ruapehu is clearly visible all dressed in winter white and even a glimpse of Mt Taranaki if you’re lucky! If an uphill hike is too much to contemplate, a gentler walk around the Howarth Memorial Wetlands is lovely in winter. Te Aroha Fish and Game has launched a photo competition to promote the Wetlands, and walkers are encouraged to get snapping while the beautiful colours of autumn last. The competition runs till the 20 June and includes senior and junior sections. Find out more on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ HowarthMemorialWetland The Hauraki Rail Trail is less busy over winter and Sport Waikato has an event lined up to get us off the couch. The ‘Trail Trilogy’ will be held over three months and entrants can run or walk one or all three sections of the trail individually or in teams. Perfect for a group of workmates to commit to a winter training programme. You can pick up an entry form from us or enter online at www.sportwaikato.org.nz To reward yourself for all this activity, winter is the perfect time to take advantage of another local asset – hot water! Te Aroha Mineral Spas offer a loyalty card which is great for locals who like a regular hot dip. Like a coffee card, every 10th spa is free and you get the chance to win with their random prize draws. Visitors often comment that our mineral spa pools are the best they’ve tried and we agree. You can also keep warm and fit at the Te Aroha Leisure Pools over winter with their aquacise classes on Thursday mornings from 10-11am and the more energetic Hydrofit class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.45–6.30pm. No excuses for not exercising over winter! The ‘Festival of the Arts – Te Aroha’ has been put together by the Te Aroha Festival of the Arts Society and runs over Queen’s Birthday weekend from 30 May until 2 June. A series of workshops over the weekend aims to encourage musicians and singers to come along and join in – no experience necessary! You can find out more about these and all our other events at www.tearohanz.co.nz/events. Don’t forget Te Aroha i-SITE are booking agents for ferries, trains, accommodation and activities so if you’re planning a mid winter break – come and see us. And if you’re going to Fieldays this year, beat the queues at the gate and get your tickets from us before you go! Keep warm till next time - from the i-SITE team

BUSINESS ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED

At our May meeting it was decided to obtain pricing for a promotional DVD for Te Aroha that businesses could link with their web sites…, When Seven Sharp visited 6 months ago they queried if we had a promotional clip they could use. The clip would not only illustrate that Te Aroha is a great place to visit but also a great place to live and work. We presented a joint submission to Council with Matamata Promotions Association to get Council to construct the cycleway to Matamata. This appeared to be well received by Councillors especially with the social and economic benefits that such an initiative would bring to our District. It was noted that both TCDC and HDC are putting $1M each into their Annual Plans to extend the trail to Kaiaua (total estimated cost $4,5M). It is anticipated (depending on the final route) that the leg to Matamata would be less than $1M build cost. Based on the feasibilities conducted for the Kaiaua leg, extending the cycleway to Matamata would result in an increase of cyclist spend of $1M - $1.7M per year by year 1 and $3M - $4.7M per year by year 5. Given that the initial feasibility significantly under estimated the actual spend, we believe Council needs to place considerable effort to instigating this project. Not only will the cycleway bring cyclist dollars it also brings investment dollars and subsequent jobs to our District. Planning for Te Aroha Crisie-in is under way again and Sarah has managed to entice Fletch from Classic Restos. This show is aired in Australia, London, the USA and throughout NZ via our local TV station central TV, channel 9, CCTV, Cue…. So will hopefully gain good exposure for our town. BA5 – these are on hold over the winter months however if someone has something to showcase about their business we are happy to assist. Tradies Evening – The next Tradies evening is 25th June 4:30pm at Ben Collins Electrical. Thanks to ANZ who have offered to provide refreshments. The event is for the owners of Trade businesses with the goal of getting more business to join the association it is an informal get together for Trades people in town to gather and network. Next meeting 5.30pm June 10th venue to be advised. Shaun O’Neill, Chairman

What is Osteopathy and how is it different? We often get asked what the difference is between Osteopathy and other manual treatments. It’s a big conversation and the essence is that each person will find a treatment type that best fits with their personal style, a clinician they love and results that speak for themselves.

Putting up with pain or discomfort is not normal Give Osteopathy a try and see for yourself how it can help you live life pain free Osteopathy is a proven technique that has evolved over the past two centuries. There is extensive evidence based research around the profession.

However, describing what your Osteopathy appointment will be like may shed some light on differences.

Osteopaths train for a minimum of 4 years, graduating with a degree based around the human body - specifically human movement, lifestyle and nutrition.

Osteopaths are totally hands on. They use no equipment or tools, just their hands. Osteopathy uses well-honed observation, palpation and clinical diagnosis skills to identify the body imbalances and stresses that are causing the patient’s symptoms. In your first appointment your osteopath will consult with you and begin a series of diagnostic tests to identify the cause of your symptoms and then work with your body to improve its function and enable the healing process to occur. This may involve joint mobilisation or manipulation, stretching or massage of affected tissues. Additionally your osteopath will prescribe a series of rehabilitation exercises for you to do at home to aid recovery and assist with managing your injury or complaint.

Osteopathic Services are available with the Waikato Osteopathic Centre at 62 Rewi Street, Te Aroha treatments until patients are discharged. Osteopaths are mainstream providers of rehabilitation services, recognised and registered with ACC so can initiate claims immediately, with no GP referral necessary. This brings the cost of treatments to nearly half - $45 for an ACC claim or $80 for a private treatment.

Appointments typically last 40 minutes and once weekly treatment is usually enough, although more frequently if recommended by your Osteopath. Statistics from ACC show Osteopathy averages only 3 to 4

Grumpy Old Man Writes. . . Back in the days when I was a kid in the slums of the industrial north of England during the Second World War and just afterwards I had quite an affinity with newspapers but never dreamt that one day I would be writing for them. Newspapers were multi-purpose – you didn’t just read them and throw them away, you passed them on to someone who would use them for a different purpose. Or kept them and utilised them for a variety things. As a kid I collected them as salvage for the war effort and was made a “captain” for my diligence. They also made great paper hats or boats. On a more practical front you could pass them on to the chip shop where yesterday’s news really did become today’s fish and chip paper. The ironmonger would gladly put the dozen screws you had just bought in a twist of newspaper to take home. And on a less salubrious note they could be torn up in squares and hang on the nail in the lavvy out in the yard. And when you had used it for all those purposes it could still be screwed up and used to light the fire. Newspapers were the all-purpose packaging. Of course you can’t do such things today, OSH would have a fit. So we have to put up with a very different form of packaging – plastic! Why does everything have to come in plastic? You can see the product but nobody knows how to get inside the enveloping cocoon. Hardware products seem to be the biggest offenders – hermetically sealed I believe is the term. They have no instructions how to get in and require a hacksaw, hammer and chisel or both to break through the unforgiving outer wrapping. Walnuts are kids play by comparison.

And how often do you buy something that has three times more packaging than actual product? Finding space for landfills is becoming a problem so why exacerbate the problem? Apart from anything else how much extra does all this packaging put on the cost of the product? Is this what progress looks like? Don’t look now but I think we’re being conned! A couple stopped me the other day to have a bit of a grump – it’s good to know I’m not alone in this. It seems with the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign coming up next year they’d call in the domain to have a look at the Gallipoli Oak. There is a plaque noting that the tree was “planted by the school children of this district in the year 1915 to the undying memory of their countrymen who fought for their liberties on the Gallipoli Peninsula”. Well the plaque is still there but the oak is conspicuous by its absence. They assured me it had been there when they had last visited the spot and had not read or heard of any decision to cut the tree down. Can’t say I have either. There may have been good reason to cut the tree down but, heck, the timing stinks.

Frederick Abraham Wild

When you look at the nice car parked outside our local Police Station do you ever wonder about the history of Policing in Te Aroha?

Armed Constabulary, N.Z. Police). With his wife Blanch, he spent the next eighteen years enjoying the good life on a small farm on Stanley Road South.

When the first Police Station and Magistrate Court House was built, horses were the mode of transport and the area to police covered from Hoe-o–Tainui, Morrinsville, Walton, Matamata, Mangaiti and over to Katikati (via Thompson’s Track).

He died on the 30th October, 1925 aged 78 years and is buried in Te Aroha Cemetery Submitted by Te Aroha Museum

Frederick Abraham Wild, one of the first policemen in Te Aroha, was born in Portsmouth, England, 23rd June, 1846. He came to New Zealand with his parents, three brothers and three sisters on board the sailing ship “Aloe” arriving at Auckland on 7th June, 1863. In 1864, he joined the Armed Constabulary as a volunteer, serving in the 2nd Waikato Militia, stationed at Whatawhata and later in the 4th Waikato Regiment at Hamilton. When the Armed Constabulary was disbanded, Fred joined the civil police as a mounted constable working from Hamilton. Frederick Abraham Wild married Miss Blanch White in Hamilton 1871, and about 1888 he was transferred to the Te Aroha Police station bringing his family with him. He received promotion to Sergeant of Police in 1899, and was transferred to Davenport. Two years later he returned to Te Aroha with his wife and family, surrendering his promotion preferring the country life with his horses, gardens and orchard. Fred was regarded as a man of integrity, good judgement, and of unquestionable character, who was very successful in preserving law and order by tact rather than by prosecutions. There was a kindliness as well as firmness in his character and his friendly advice and warning usually had the desired effect with those who at times became troublesome. Fred was known to have met and talked with the notorious Te Kooti while stationed in Hamilton, and there was a time of un-restfulness at Waharoa when an immense Totara Tree, regarded as tapu, was cut down. Fred was sent for and a Hui was held to restore the peace. When Fred retired from the force in 1906, he was presented with a long service medal for forty three years of service in the New Zealand Forces. (The Militia,

and Rest Home (Partnering with our Community) Post-Operative Care- what does this mean? I have had many community members drop in to see me who seem to be confused about what happens to them after an operation in Waikato Hospital and what happens to them once the operation has been performed. I hope that the following explanations help you to understand the process a little better. There are options that may be presented to you: • Convalescent Care. This must be approved by Waikato Hospital and the period of care may vary according to your circumstances and needs. This is a period for you to rest and recuperate. • Transitional Care. This care is designed to help patients who have been in a public hospital for a long period to transition back at home. Again this has to be approved by Waikato Hospital I have also been asked what other care you can receive. We have what is termed GP beds. You must be referred by your own doctor who will give us a clear diagnosis or reason for your admission. The length of your admission is determined by your doctor. Your doctor cannot refer you to our hospital if you have been discharged from a public hospital seven days prior. If you are having ongoing problems during the seven days after your discharge from a public or private hospital you must go back to your GP to be referred back to the hospital where the operation was done. You can elect to come to Te Aroha Hospital after an operation if you are willing to pay privately and you can stipulate how long you wish to stay. Long term hospital level care and rest home care is by assessment through Disability Support Link only and must be approved whether you are fully subsidised or paying privately. If you are unsure about anything to do with your ongoing health needs Stef or Dianne on our clinical team will be happy to help. Sometimes a discussion helps reduce anxiety and gives you a better understanding of your own position which may bring some comfort at what can be a stressful period in your life.

It’s cold, it might rain, it’s too dark – are these sounding familiar as reasons not to exercise? Well without wanting to sound too much like my mother – wear a coat, take an umbrella, buy a torch – for every excuse there is an antidote or an indoor option. If you believe good things come in threes then take a look at the Trail Trilogy Fun Run and Walk series – all on the Hauraki Rail Trail with a distance to suit primary school children through to seniors. As each event takes place on the Hauraki Rail Trail it is even suitable for pram pushing! "ANZAC DAY"

Remembering ANZAC day was a solemn, but a memorable event. To honour our fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen that served New Zealand.....they bravely went. To two World Wars, Pacific, Vietnam and Korea so our presence was severely felt. As the Kiwi spirit was everlasting as the enemy was soon to be dealt. The sting and might from the men from way down under Soon had the numerous enemy aware..... That ANZACS were not to be underrated and are truly a combat wonder. So many brave deeds that can't be recorded As sadly the unlucky ones never came back But there personal bravery lives on, as ANZAC day Defies time, age and weather, come what may. So we all stand proud, as the "Last Post" is played again. To remember the women and families, who lost these, the indefatigable, honourable brave men! VISIQUE PROVIDES GIFT OF SIGHT FOR MORE THAN 1,000 FIJIANS Most people would consider sight their most precious sense, but for many living in rural Fiji with limited access to eye care and an under-resourced health system, vision is a luxury beyond their reach. However, this year more than 1,000 Fijians will receive basic eye care and specialised treatment from a group of volunteer New Zealand optometrists associated with the Voluntary Ophthalmic Services Overseas (VOSO), made possible by the support of local optometry practice Visique O'Hagan Vision Care. Formed in the 1980s, VOSO provides free eye care to help prevent and reduce the risk of blindness among the people of the Pacific Islands. In recognition of the importance of the work done by VOSO, Visique O'Hagan Vision Care has committed to supporting VOSO by making a donation for every eye examination undertaken at the practice between 21 April and 31 May 2014. Visique O'Hagan Vision Care owner and local optometrist Heather O'Hagan says she is thrilled to support the work undertaken by VOSO. “The organisation’s work in Fiji and other Pacific Islands is so important. Access to basic eye care is something that we as New Zealanders take for granted at times, and we hope the community of Te Aroha will support this valuable and worthy initiative.” VOSO chairman Richard Johnson says with only a small number of optometrists and ophthalmologists working in Fiji, many locals don’t have access to eye care.

“On the island of Vanua Levu there is only one ophthalmologist to service a population of around 220,000, which means many on the island go without the necessary eye care. VOSO has been sending teams to Fiji since the 1980s and we have found that our services are needed now more than ever before. Due to rising numbers of patients with diabetes and difficulties accessing medications, more residents are experiencing eye health issues that remain unaddressed.” Donations for eye examinations undertaken at Visique O'Hagan Vision Care - Te Aroha and other Visique practices around the country will be used to send volunteer optometrists and ophthalmologists to Fiji in July. They will provide eye care services such as eye examinations, prescribing glasses and performing surgery. Since the early 1980s VOSO has annually sent teams to Fiji and has been involved in the development of an eye care programme in the town of Labasa, located in Macuata Province in the north-eastern part of the island of Vanua Levu. VOSO estimates having examined more than 45,000 Fijians, who would otherwise not have access to basic eye care, and performed more than 1,000 cataract operations.

Heather O'Hagan reports that Visique Te Aroha have done 59 examinations in Te Aroha contributing $1 each towards the VOSO trip to Fiji plus approximately 20 pairs of old specs dropped off. They accept old specs all year round.

Become a Competent Speaker JOIN PIAKO TOASTMASTERS! I always had a fear of standing in front of an audience and delivering a speech. For years it was beyond my ability and way, way out of my comfort zone. Then, after much prompting, I took the plunge and joined The Piako Toastmaster Club. After 6 speeches or so, my voice stopped trembling, I learnt to smile and actually began to enjoy the experience. No more trembling hand and voice, no more sleepless nights thinking about it. I have just completed my 30th speech and wish I had done this 20 years earlier. Join our friendly club and see what it can do for you. We meet at 7:30pm every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month at Morrinsville Senior Citizens Hall.
