Christmas Dinner in Te Aroha

Christmas is a time for families and Christmas dinner is a time for families to sit down and share the festive fare together. Christmas Day this year will be the 16th consecutive occasion on which Corolyn and Tom Stephenson have provided a community Christmas Dinner in Te Aroha for whoever wishes to come along and share it with them. This year it will be held in the Catholic Hall at noon – the largest venue capable of accommodating the expected large turnout. After 16 years the occasion has become something of an institution in Te Aroha – it’s an opportunity for people who would otherwise be alone to share the festive occasion with others or for those struggling with the expense to avoid having to forgo a vital Christmas tradition. The idea first came to fruition when Tom and Corolyn, who are both from large families, discovered there would only be four people at home for Christmas dinner in 1997. They decided that by giving their time they could once more have a happy family time with plenty of people around them. That year they shared Christmas dinner with 60 people in the Salvation Army hall. It was a huge success and every year since then it has grown and has been held in the Salvation Army Hall, Mountain View Church, St Mark’s Church until it grew so big that only the Catholic Hall could hold the numbers. Last year more than 130 people attended many with families. Ït was great to see the children there,” said Corolyn. “The dinner is open for everyone who would like to join us for this special day,” said Corolyn. “It caters for all who are needing company and companionship on Christmas Day regardless of their economic backgrounds.” The dinner is provided by donations of goods and money from a variety of organisations as well as donations

received on the day and is prepared and catered for by Corolyn and Tom. “Last year we were astounded by the generosity and support of the Te Aroha and surrounding districts community,” she said. To ensure the administration of the annual event is in sound hands and above board Tom and Corolyn put all financial aspects of the occasion including donations in the hands of Athleen McCabe and Tania McCarthy who also provide valuable support. The dinner is FREE but donations are very welcome. Containers are provided for people to take home leftovers and this helped for another need. For catering purposes organisers require names of those intending to attend by December 18. There are lists for names at the Te Aroha Drop-in Centre, The Railway Shop, Citizens Advice Bureau or by phoning Corolyn 8849521 or Athleen 8849905. -- Ian Harrop

Scott Simpson, M P Coromandel Good progress in 2013 School holidays are almost upon us. While some will be looking forward to a good break, I know for many Te Aroha business owners and their staff, rest and relaxation won’t be on the agenda in the immediate future as they gear up for their busiest time of the year. The feeling is positive among our tourism business operators and the degree of optimism has certainly increased since this time last year. The increased business from the Hauraki Rail Trail continues to be a huge boost for the town and I look forward to seeing the businesses of Te Aroha capitalise even further over the peak summer period. I think with an invigorated Business Association backed by Matamata-Piako District Council, Te Aroha is well-poised for further growth and development over the next year. For me, seeing the completion of the Tui mine remediation work earlier in the year was a particular highlight of 2013. It is fitting that this happened at a time when the town is looking to the future with such confidence. From my point of view, I’ve had a tremendously busy year in the electorate with an equally busy time in Parliament. It’s been especially heartening to see policies that were months or even years in the making being implemented and getting results. Taking crime to a 30 year low and overhauling our welfare system in a way that is getting people back to work are just two that stick out in my mind. These are examples where the changes we have made are having very real impacts on people’s lives. Parliament will be in recess for the holidays so I will be out and about in the beautiful Coromandel electorate visiting as many people as I can and supporting our wonderful events. I will have the opportunity to meet many of the good people of Te Aroha along with some of

our visitors to whom I extend a warm welcome to our glorious part of the world. Finally for 2013, I would like to wish you and your families a safe and joyful Christmas and all the very best for the year ahead. Water watch – early summer

weather brings restrictions

level

water

An early spell of warm weather has bought us to level one water restrictions and we’re asking residents to watch their water use in preparation for a long, hot summer. High temperatures and low rainfalls mean we need to start making small changes such as limiting sprinkler use, doing full dishwasher and washing machine loads, fixing leaky taps and avoid watering in the heat of the day. Our water alert system consists of four levels:

TE AROHA

Do you have family or friends visiting for the holidays?

INCORPORATED

Here at i-SITE we tell visitors about all our local attractions and hidden gems every day. This month we welcomed visitors from - Australia, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, Russia, Czech Republic, Trinidad, Iceland, USA…and New Zealand – that’s many different versions of English!

BUSINESS ASSOCIATION The Christmas promotion is under way again this year so please shop at the businesses that are partaking in the promotion, fill out the entry form and be there to win. 14 December Starting at 11am at the town Clock: • Nativity Play • Mail drop draw • Colouring competition winner and spot prizes • 5 x draws Totalling $2,600 of Te Aroha dollars • Santa visit for kids • Big draw – Gold Coast Holiday

Level 1: Conserve water Water supply is expected to come under pressure. Level 2: Water on alternate days The water supply is under considerable pressure and significant savings are required. Hoses, sprinklers and garden irrigation systems can only be used on alternate days (even street numbers on even days; odd street numbers on odd days). Level 3: Sprinkler ban At this level the water supply is under extreme pressure. Hand held hoses should only be used on alternate days and sprinklers, garden irrigation systems, unattended hoses, unnecessary water blasting and other water use is banned. Level 4: Total watering ban At this level the water supply level is critical and Waikato Regional Council restrictions may have been applied. All use of water outside the house is banned.

Trades evening, thanks to Stanish Signs for the venue and Westpac for providing the refreshments. This was a good gathering of local trades people and whilst many trades people are members it was good to get a few along that are not yet members and hopefully get a few more on board. The business association are currently working on the Christmas promotion for the town and already planning next years “Cruise in” and with a few additional members are looking forward to building on that momentum and keep promoting this fantastic town for the benefit of everyone. “Te Aroha dollars” make great Christmas gifts for friends family and staff so call into Kay’s Way or Piako Stationary for your Te Aroha dollars and help support local business. 2013 has still been challenging for business but things are looking positive for 2014, we trust that everyone will have a safe Christmas break and encourage people to consider first Te Aroha for their Christmas shopping.

We are lucky there is so much to do for all ages and nationalities in Te Aroha and our district. However, it’s often residents who struggle for ideas of how to entertain guests in their own back yard. So here are a few ideas for what to do when the rellies descend! You could explore one of the many walking tracks in and around town. The Waiorongomai Valley offers walks for all fitness levels. There is so much to see just on the Low Level loop Track – mining history, natural bush and the beautiful stream – an easy two hour walk. The new DOC bridges at the top of the Valley are a must see for the more adventurous. There is easy access to Tutumangao Falls including the new lookout from the Tui Domain Track; this provides a lovely view of the town and Hauraki Plains. And of course the Howarth Memorial Wetland is a local favourite for a morning or afternoon stroll. Another option is to hire bikes from Outdoor Adventure and take them for a spin on the Hauraki Rail Trail. Do as little or as much as you like. Take a picnic for a full day’s activities and round off the day with a soak in a private spa or a dip at the Leisure Pools. Galleries and a growing number of retro and vintage shops offer something for artists and fossickers alike. You could take your visitors down the road to Hobbiton, the first movie location built as a permanent feature in the world. We have watched the site develop over the years into the world class attraction it is today, including the addition of the working water mill and the Green Dragon Inn, both of which look like they have stood on the farm for centuries. This is Middle Earth and a trip to the Shire will delight not only Hobbit fans. So, pick up some brochures and maps from i-SITE, then take the rellies out on a personalised tour of your patch – they’re bound to be impressed!

Happy holidays and safe travels from the i-SITE team

Holiday season is fast approaching and as well as planning what to pack for the family, it is important to think of what your cat or dog needs to be prepared for their holiday. If your pet is going to stay in a cattery or boarding kennel they will need an up to date vaccination programme. Cats require a single vaccination against Calicivirus, Tracheitis and Panleucopaenia. Dogs require a vaccination that covers Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis and Leptospirosis, as well as a vaccination for Kennel Cough. If your dog is not vaccinated against Kennel Cough, then they will require two doses of Kennel Cough vaccine 4 weeks apart and thereafter an annual vaccination. We suggest you book your cat or dog in to see a vet at least 6 weeks prior to your pets stay at the boarding kennel, to check their vaccination status and administer any vaccinations if required.

Te Aroha Identities The Smardon Family - three generations Samuel Tozer Smardon and his wife Anna Row Smardon arrived in Auckland, New Zealand in 1863. In 1885, Samuel moved the family to live at Waiorongomai and to take up the position as publican of the Premier Hotel. This licence was transferred from Johannes B Killian in June, 1885 to Samuel Tozer Smardon. In May 1887, Samuel moved with his licence to run the Waiorongomai Hotel and in 1890, he came to Te Aroha to run the Palace Hotel as publican. Samuel took the licence over from George Erbert, who had not long done extensive improvements to the Palace for the expected increase of tourists with the coming of the railway. By the late 1890’s, it was usual for a hotel to have a sample room. Travelling salesmen would travel from town to town on the train with their wares and then set up in the hotel and the shopkeepers would come in the evening and look over the wares then, put in an order for what they wished to purchase. Special rooms were provided just for this activity and the Palace had such a room, which is today, the old building in Kenrick Street. Samuel died in 1899 and after his will had been probated his wife Anna, took over the publicans license. Ernest Smardon was the youngest of the family, and along with his brothers and sisters he grew up out at Waiorongomai, attending the Waiorongomai School. Ernest married Mabel Kenny and for a time farmed out at Mangaiti. He ran in partnership with his brother a coach service to Paeroa, Morrinsville and other centres before the advent of trains. Ernest was actively interested in horses and joined the Mounted Rifles. Ernest was presented with the U.F.B.A Gold Star for 25 years of service to the Te Aroha Fire Brigade on the 4th November, 1944. He was a member of the Jockey Club, and a member of the first Borough Council. Ernest was the local milkman for twenty years delivering the milk with a cart and horse around the town. Kenneth Smardon was born in Te Aroha 1904, and Ken’s passion was the sport called Coursing. Te Aroha was one of the earliest places to have their own Plumpton Park out at the local race course. This was a specially designed place where the hare’s were raised and the dogs were raced. On race day, the hare was released and two dogs at a time, took up the chase – usually the hare got away back to the safety of the hutch. Ken raised many good dogs, winning the

Waterloo Cup outright, after three consecutive years. Descendants of Samuel Tozer and Anna Row Smardon still live in Te Aroha today.

Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand is an independent community organisation offering a free, confidential and independent service of information, assistance and referrals from 90 locations stretching from Northland to Invercargill. Last year volunteers received over 508,000 enquiries on issues ranging from electricity, immigration, housing and employment to consumer rights, health and family. Bureaux have 'core' business that they must deliver and then are expected to 'fill the gaps' in their communities. CAB Te Aroha does this by hosting a free law clinic, holding many application forms, facilitating a Social Services Network meeting and being an agent for the Te Aroha Community Food Bank. In February 2014 the bureau will be offering you the opportunity to join this worthwhile organisation. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SERVICE Let us celebrate our youth! Over the last four months the Youth Empowerment Service has been working with a crew of young people to organise a Paint Party. This event will be held on Saturday the 30th at a mystery location. This event is almost entirely the work of youth aged 13-19, these young people have faced many challenges, made decisions and worked as a team to provide an event that this district should be proud of. We have seen such growth in this crew over the months and this event would not have been possible without them. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with them. Funding for our next project has just been confirmed, Young people such as these are the future of our community; the skills that they have learnt throughout the delivery of this event will serve them well in their futures. We look forward to creating a new crew to organise another YES Factor, Talent Contest early next year.
