Calling all geriatric layabouts! Ian Harrop Casting of the current production at the Little Theatre should be complete by the time you read this – auditions were on February 2 – but anyone keen to participate could always contact the theatre to see if there is an opening for them. New members are always welcome. The production is a double bill comprising A Word in Edgeways by Nerine Groome which is directed by Wanda Brittain and Phone Jam by Helen Varley Jamieson and directed by Les Munro. Both are comedies and are on stage April 3, 4 and 5 with a matinee and evening performance on Saturday the 5th. Following the successes of 2013, the double bill promises to follow suit and should be a very entertaining evening. If you fancy yourself as Tom Hanks, Leonardo di Caprio, Russell Crowe or any one of the current leading men in movies you’d be out of the running for director Ian Harrop’s mid-year production. Ian is on the lookout for a trio of geriatric layabouts to fill the roles of Foggy, Compo and Clegg in the stage version of Last of the Summer Wine. Written by Roy Clarke, author of the hugely popular long-running TV series, the stage version brings together all the familiar characters and a few others along with Nora Batty and her niece Constance in a farce that is packed with Clarke’s droll humour.

The last couple of years have seen a very successful run of productions which included The Darling Buds of May, Roger Hall’s Four Flat Whites in Italy, the pantomime Robinson Crusoe and ended with the superb Ladies for Hire by Alison Quigan directed by Jocelyn Legg. The latter was notable for its clever staging and some sincere performances enhanced by some excellent singing. Over the years the Te Aroha Dramatic Society has been the breeding ground for several members who have gone on to a professional career in theatre and drama. The society is holding its AGM at the Little Theatre on March 12 and is on the lookout for some fresh blood. New members are always welcome and acting or theatre experience is not necessary. There is always a need for actors, stage hands, make-up, wardrobe and set construction assistants or simply members who are keen to show their practical and financial support. Training and teaching is available to anyone interested in using their creative talents. Come along to the meeting and see where you could fit into happy band of thespians.

But Ian is conscious of the fact that the show will only work if the characters can be faithfully reproduced so he is scouring the district in search of look-alikes, sound-alikes and brilliant mimics not to mention experienced actors.

Final auditions and casting will take place in March and the production will open late June or early July. “I’m sure there are folk out there who know the show and the characters well and think they could carry it off. Scott Simpson MP Coromandel Moving forward in 2014 The start of a new year is the traditional time to assess where we are at and set goals and targets for the next 12 months or so. Many Aroha Advertiser readers will I’m sure be still persevering with some worthy New Year’s resolutions. It’s a similar process in Government as Parliament resumed at the end of January with fresh energy and impetus for 2014. So what are the priorities and what can the people of Te Aroha and the rest of the electorate expect? For most of us, our interactions with Government come through the public service. So a key area of focus will be on National’s Better Public Services programme which is transforming how we fund and deliver those vital things that all New Zealanders need – health, security, education and welfare. We’ve set specific targets that we expect our public service to achieve across the following five result areas: • Reducing long-term welfare dependence • Supporting vulnerable children

• Boosting skills and employment • Reducing crime • Improving interaction with Government The targets we’ve set recognise the demand for improvements in addressing complex, long-term issues that affect New Zealanders. We’ve deliberately set the bar high and we are making great headway. In the year to June 2013, the number of long-term beneficiaries dropped from 78,154 to 74,559. Our aim is to see that figure hit 55,000 by 2017. As at September 2013, the participation rate of children in Early Childhood Education was up to 95.8% –an increase of 1,640 than at the same time in 2012. We will be looking for a further rise this year as we work towards having 98% in quality early childhood education by 2016. As at September 2013, 91% of eight-month-olds were fully immunised – exceeding the June 2014 target of 90%. As a result of our commitment to getting more police on the frontline, by June 2013, the crime rate had dropped by 12%, the violent crime rate had dropped by 8%, and the youth crime rate had dropped by 19% since June 2011.

Where should legal highs be sold in our district? Under new legislation , Council can impose restrictions on where legal highs can be sold, we can’t ban them completely (that’s against the law). Make a submission and tell us what you think about what we’re proposing. We are proposing to limit the retail sale of legal highs to the following locations: •
Whitaker Street Te Aroha, between Boundary Street and Lawrence Ave
•
Thames Street Morrinsville, between Canada Street and Studholme Street
•
Broadway Matamata, between Tainui Street and Hetana Street
We are also proposing the following restrictions: •
a 200 metre restriction between retail premises selling legal highs, this would mean a maximum of two stores could be in each town
•
a 50 metre distance restriction from sensitive sites including churches, preschools, schools and community facilities.

We trust that everyone had a safe and relaxing Christmas and new year break. 2014 is shaping up to be a big one for Te Aroha. It is great to see the Rotary initiative of markets in the domain, cyclists in our town and are anticipating the next few months to continue to increase those numbers coming through. The Christmas promotion was another success and thanks to those members that volunteered their time and energy to help make the promotion happen, and all those businesses that were part of the promotion. It was great to see so many people there and congratulations to all the kids that won the colouring competitions and those that collected the Major draw and all those Te Aroha Dollars. Late last year we had confirmation from the office of the ombudsman that they will assess NZ transport Agency’s (NZTA) refusal to establish signage at the Tatanui intersection and should have a ruling from them early this year. Happy New Year everyone! We hope you enjoyed the holidays with celebration, relaxation and sunshine in just the right measure. Te Aroha i-SITE has been busy welcoming visitors from far and wide this summer. We’ve seen visitors from Iceland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Trinidad and Tahiti to name a few. We’ve noticed a growing number of European cyclists travelling with young children, usually in a kiddy seat behind their parents or tucked into their own custom built trailer. They generally avoid the busier, touristy towns and love getting off road and onto New Zealand’s growing network of cycle trails and discovering small towns like Te Aroha. They tell us we will see more cycling families as news of our great cycle trail network spreads! We have a great line up of events planned for the next couple of months: Te Aroha Domain is looking a picture at the moment and is the perfect setting for Rotary’s fortnightly Summer Fair. Come along and catch up with friends, pick up some produce and enjoy the atmosphere of the Domain in the evening. ‘A Day in the Domain’ is on Sunday 16 March and is shaping up to be a cracker of a day with a variety of stalls already booked. Top of the entertainment bill is Auckland’s favourite 10 piece rhythm ‘n’ blues, jump and swing band, Sal Valentine and the Babyshakers, fresh from a New Zealand wide tour promoting their debut album. Domain Day organisers are thrilled to have secured this vibrant young band for the event as they will appeal to fans of great music, no matter what their age – and we get to see them for free. Brendan Dugan and Jodi Vaughn are coming to town on Saturday 8 March with their show “Just the two of us” at the Te Aroha Club. Brendan and Jodi are country music favorites with a string of awards from New Zealand and Australia, performing live and on television shows. Saturday 22 March is an opportunity to take a self guided tour of some of Te Aroha’s outstanding homes with Aroha Homes. Properties range from the pretty to the avante guard with surprises around every corner. This fundraiser is organised by St Joseph’s Primary School PTA. The ECHO Walking Festival runs from 15 March to 6 April this year. Now’s the time to pick up a programme from i-SITE and register for any of the great walking options lined up from Coromandel to South Waikato, including five local walks. Te Aroha Physiotherapy introduces a third clinician to their team two days a week, to meet the growing needs of the practice. Beginning work on 10 February, Rob Neish adds another experienced physiotherapist to the mix. Rob hails from Australia, having lived and trained in Melbourne, graduating in 1984 with a physiotherapy degree. He then crossed “to the dark side”, coming to New Zealand in 1984.
“I have always enjoyed the problem solving aspect of physiotherapy. I like to be hands on and use manual therapy skills where possible. Back and neck problems have always been a focus.”
One of the attractions of New Zealand was the running scene where he competed in 3 international races. “Basically I was able to see how far behind the top guys I was”. A highlight was setting the pace for John Walker’s 89th 4 minute mile.
Rob loves Te Aroha as a township and is excited to be joining the team and meeting the locals in the practice.
Rob owned his own practice in Hamilton for many years. During this time Rob’s interest in sport saw him involved with Waikato basketball, Waikato soccer and led to 10 years of being physio for the NZ Tall Blacks Basketball team.
Rob will be working every Monday and Thursday from the Rewi Street practice beginning on 10 February.

Grumpy Old Man Writes. . . In March 2013, with less hullabaloo than one would expect, two give-way rules of the road changed overnight, presumably to counter the extremely high number of traffic incidents involving right-turning vehicles. The change took place remarkably quietly and surprisingly successfully. A short time later the NZ Transport Agency reported the change had gone ahead smoothly with very few incidents reported. I drive a fair bit, mostly out of town, and I’ll admit I haven’t encountered any problems wherever I’ve been travelling. But back here at home there’s one spot that never fails to fill me with dread. It’s the intersection where Kenrick Street and Whitaker Street cut cross each other. Yes! That one by the clock tower. Rules, that drivers all over New Zealand seem to understand and follow, go out the window the moment everyone approaches the clock tower. Indecision strikes, uncertainty afflicts drivers. This week, I’ve seen two come to a complete halt in bewilderment as they try to anticipate what everybody else seems to be doing despite the fact they are travelling north on SH26 and should continue unhindered.. Most days I have to travel eastwards up Kenrick Street past the clock tower and subsequently return in the opposite direction. The trip eastwards is usually without incident having stopped to give way to traffic travelling along SH26 towards Hamilton apart from the occasional vehicle coming up Whitaker Street who has failed to observe the stop sign. But the return trip, especially when traffic is heavy, has turned into a nightmare. On more than one occasion I have come down Kenrick Street, halted at the clock tower because a vehicle has come up Kenrick Street and is waiting to turn right. I’m waiting for him to go but he is waiting for ME to go. Meanwhile another vehicle is approaching
from the Paeroa direction on SH26 causing us both to hesitate. A fourth vehicle on the stop sign on the lower end of Whitaker Street decides that since neither of us are going he’ll shoot through – in front of the vehicle approaching from the Paeroa direction causing him to screech to a halt. It’s not a one-off situation it occurs with astonishing regularity. I’m not surprised that many parishioners at St Mark’s choose to drive along Church Street and find an easier access on to Whitaker Street even if it does take longer. The rules are fine, the problem is that SH26 is Whitaker Street when it approaches the clock tower but is Kenrick Street when it leaves it. To understand the “Top of the T goes before me” rule we have to visualise SH26 being straightened out without the bend in it. We’d see then that traffic coming up Kenrick Street and turning right into Whitaker Street is on the “Top of the T” and goes first. Traffic coming down Kenrick Street would go next because traffic coming up Whitaker Street on the stop sign should give way to traffic from the right. I don’t think there are too many problems with the Transport Department’s new rules after all they work elsewhere. The problem seems to be the intersection itself. Maybe the intersection should become a roundabout – and give us a whole new set of problems to keep us occupied for a while. No matter how we handle it the NZ Traffic Agency reminds us “road users should continue to obey all road signs and signals”. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it. Still I think I might take the long way round in future.

Active Aroha Get on your Bike
and Rest Home (Partnering with our Community) Firstly the Board members would like to thank all the financial members who came to our AGM in November last year, over 200 in total. It gave us an opportunity to outline what we hope to achieve in 2014. Last year we had the support of over twenty Clubs, Foundations, Charitable Trusts, Local Businesses, Societies and individuals who pulled together to help us to purchase a ‘state of the art’ Call Bell System, Electric Bed and also to create a wonderful Remembrance Garden.. So many volunteers came together to help us realise some dreams. Many more volunteers help us to support our residents and patients and also look after our rose gardens. Some volunteers have provided free labour to help us with wallpapering and the provision of a concrete pathway. This year thanks to Charlie Mace we can begin some refurbishment of Lawrence House. The present furnishings and the equipment in the Hospital are as old as the Hospital!!!! This year we have to replace our two bath beds which are now rusting. At $6,000 each it is quite a mission. We have received $2,500 dollars from Bayleys, Waikato which has given us a solid start. A sincere thank you to everyone. We have a great team here at the Hospital and Rest Home who work exceptionally hard to ensuring that we treat our patients and residents with dignity, respect and compassion through all stages of their journey with us. Lou Beer Sport Waikato District Coordinator February is national Bike Wise Month (www.bikewise.co.nz) when everyone is encouraged to get on their bikes and leave the car at home. Te Aroha is extremely fortunate to have such a variety of biking on our doorstep and most of the surrounding roads are not too busy for a decent road ride. A small group of dedicated locals have been working extremely hard on the BMX track (Keep up to date on Facebook ) but really need help to transport more clay to make the jumps and berms. Contact Outdoor Adventure if you can help with a trailer or truck to help finish this eagerly awaited facility. For those less willing to jump on two wheels but wanting to get fit, walking is an excellent starting point and again Te Aroha is spoilt for choice, from senior walking groups to full day tramps there is an option for every level of fitness. For the competitive, winter sports are gearing up for the 2014 season so keep an eye on the Public notices and commit to joining a team or club this year. Jatinder Singh, 23, from Te Aroha became the second winner of the Tui Catch A Six competition. The $100,000 catch was taken at Seddon Park in Hamilton with the Black Caps on SATURDAY 22nd FEBRUARY at 6.00pm playing India in a one day international. On Friday the 29th November the Waihou Community Hall got a special Xmas present. 65 children of all ages from the Elstow Waihou Combined School, performed a series of songs and a cheerleader display on the Waihou Hall stage. “I’ve tried to get our Waihou kids back into the Hall for three years” said Les Munro, the chairman of the Waihou Events Society. “And it was fantastic to have the hall filled with such an enjoyable local event.” The largely family audience loved the school song group ranging from the school tinies, to the year 8 seniors holding the back row. The programme started with the national anthem in two languages, presented two Wiatas including Te Aroha “love and peace’, shook the place up with “Rock Around the Xmas Tree”, and concluded with a cheerleader display which used every inch of the stage, and avoided spilling over onto the audience. Brittany Charrington and Nikia Graham showed great talent for a musical future and sang two duets to the delight of all. “ The children were really excited to be performing on a stage with a big audience and real stage lighting,” said Mrs Shelly Good the school Principal. ‘The excellent result was a testament to the efforts of Simone Campbell, and Sarah Rasmussen, the teachers who prepared the programme, coached the kids, and guided them on to the stage and through the songs.” An hour long programme continued with a spirited performance by the Pavarotti singers with an average age of 77 years. They sang a group of well known traditional songs under the guidance of Bernie Tuohey. The choral works concluded with a 20 minute recital by the Mighty River Harmony barbershop all male singers conducted by Dwayne Wallace. The full house then gathered in the carpark to be treated to a yummy fundraiser sausage BBQ generously provided by the Te Aroha Bunnings and cooked by Geoff Shepherdson and Neil Acklam. To crown a delightful evening we were then treated to “Carols in the Park” delivered by the Piako Concert Brass band led by Musical Director Paul Ferguson. “This has been a highlight of a busy year for the Hall”, said Les. Jennifer Nickel, Treasurer of the Society, reported that a net $300.00 was donated by gold coin and this would further the work of the Society to promote, maintain, and improve the 100year old hall. The committee wishes all our supporters in Waihou and Te Aroha a A VERY PROSPEROUS 2014.

CONTINUING EDUCATION TE AROHA
Continuing Education meetings are for those people • who like to listen, learn, question and discuss topics of interest • who have a desire to gain knowledge • who like to keep the brain active while enjoying the company of others who meet with the same purpose. The Continuing Education Te Aroha group was established in 1990 one of a number of similar groups formed, mainly in smaller towns of the Waikato. This was part of the fabric of the University of Waikato. The purpose to provide on-going support for older persons in the community who wished to keep abreast with the world around them. The university provided the organization, helped financially and made their staff available as speakers Speakers topics vary, some scientific, some historical, some environmental, some explaining unusual careers. However with successive funding cuts the Continuing Education Centre at the University was forced to close in 2012. Since that time each group has worked independently but with the same purpose. This has placed an extra burden on those few people willing to find speakers of note each month to maintain the interest of members. Everyone of any age is welcome to attend the meetings held at • 1,30pm on the third Wednesday of each month • St Mark’s Church Lounge, Church Street Te Aroha • A door charge of $3.00 covers venue hire, & afternoon tea The October meeting each year is used as a basis for a bus trip to a destination of interest. In October 2013 we visited Cambridge and the tour of the nearly newly completed Avanti cycling velodrome was a highlight of the day. The 2014 programme begins on the 19th February 2014. The speaker will be Bruce Macdowall, the subject “Earthquakes” a topic in the minds of many New Zealanders at present. If the idea of continuing learning appeals come along, add your voice to the discussion and if you have a particular topic you wish to learn more about your suggestions are most welcome. TE AROHA LINE DANCING CLUB Friday 28th February to Sunday 2nd March 2014 will be a busy time for the Te Aroha Line dancers. The Beat Awards, the annual line dancing awards, are being hosted by the Waikato clubs. The Te Aroha, Morrinsville and Cambridge clubs are responsible for the Friday night social and the theme we have chosen is "A Day At The Races" to showcase the districts proud racing heritage. Dancers from all over New Zealand and Australia will attend these awards which are being held in the Cambridge Town Hall. People who were alone on Christmas Day not only had a piece to go to enjoy the fellowship of other residents, they also had a feast fit for a King. The Annual Te Aroha Community Christmas Day Dinner now in it's 16th year, was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Hall and attracted 175 people who sat down to a beautiful two course meal, comprising four different meats, eight salads plus potatoes and peas and six different puddings. Nibbles and punch were served before the meal. This year was a record for people attending. While the volunteer organised event, originally started by Te Aroha residents Tom and Corolyn Stephenson, increases in popularity each year, we are still overwhelmed by the generosity TE AROHA of the churches, business and surrounding community. KIWANIS READING PROGRAMME
Have you thought of Pippins, Brownies, Guides or Rangers for your daughters? Now is the time to register your daughter with one of the units. Pippins is for girls 5-7 years, Brownies 7-9 ½ years, Guides 9½ to Year 12. STOP PRESS - RANGER UNIT OPENING SOON After many years of not having a unit in Papawai district, a Ranger unit opening for girls from 12½ to 17 years. Also a Senior section (name yet to be confirmed) will be available shortly for young women aged from 16-25 years. New section programmes are being progressively rolled out throughout 2014 which will provide plenty of exciting new opportunities for our girls and young women, starting with Pippins in Term 1, Brownies and Guides in Term 3 and Rangers in Term 4. Exciting times are ahead for all. Have you seen Girl Guiding's advertisement on TV seeking more leaders recently? Yes, it does apply to our district and if you think you have what it takes to be a leader, please contact our Zone office on 0800 555 170 to register your interest. We all hope you enjoy your well earned retirement. The Brownies have moved to St Marks Church hall giving them the opportunity to work more closely with the other units. Their unit meets now from 4.30 pm to 6 pm on Wednesdays. Biscuits are coming soon too! The wind-up to the KIWANIS SUMMER READING PROGRAMME, the Great Book Mystery Finale Party was held recently at the Te Aroha Leisure Pools. The Summer Reading Programme is held yearly and organised by Kiwanis through local Councils and the local libraries over a six week period to encourage children to explore and read books from their local libraries. Within this period they read their choice of books and report back to the library at least three times to discuss the books they have been reading and demonstrate their understanding of them. In some cases children have read in excess of twenty books. Incorporated into the overall period are two activity days with colouring competitions and prizes awarded to the best three. All those who have fulfilled the requirements are given a book of their own choice. Kiwanis have provided some funding towards the overall costs, with local council input and publisher support, for some years. Support for the scheme from children and parents has been very strong and all three libraries in the MPDC have been well pleased with the outcome. Finale Party magician Trevor Sills entertained all present and his magic was well received by his audience. Certificates were then presented to all who had completed the requirements by librarian Larraine Chandler of Te Aroha Library and Michael Earl representing Morrinsville Kiwanis. The children were then able to choose their book and enjoy a swim in the Leisure Pools.
THE ROTARY CLUB OF TE AROHA INC. IT’S A NEW YEAR: Yes, we have had our first Summer Fair in the Domain and all who did attend enjoyed the ambience of the evening. The fairs will be held fortnightly (apart from Saturday March 15th as this is the day before Domain Day which is an annual event). The dates are February 1, 15, March 1, and 29. We will then finish until next summer and will most likely start again the November. TE AROHA TENNIS CLUB The Tennis Club has been using the 7 Grass Courts prepared by Owen Passau [pictured below far right] this season. The Courts have also been used for several Tournaments attracting players from all over NZ. Community Groups Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand is an independent community organisation offering a free, confidential and independent service of information, assistance and referrals from 90 locations stretching from Northland to Invercargill. Last year volunteers received over 508,000 enquiries on issues ranging from electricity, immigration, housing and employment to consumer rights, health and family. Bureaux have 'core' business that they must deliver and then are expected to 'fill the gaps' in their communities. CAB Te Aroha does this by hosting a free law clinic, holding many application forms, facilitating a Social Services Network meeting and being an agent for the Te Aroha Community Food Bank. In February 2014 the bureau will be offering you the opportunity to join this worthwhile organisation.
