Who are we? Surrounded by turquoise waters, the tranquil golden island of Porto Santo is the smallest inhabited island in the Madeira archipelago. The island is made up of a single administrative parish, Vila Baleira, which also serves the islets, Ilhéus de Baixo, Cima, Ferro and Fonte de Areia. The hospitality and friendliness of the locals, a pleasant climate throughout the year, the spectacular natural beauty of its and culture are just some of the reasons to visit this paradise.

Health and well-being go hand in hand also enjoys rare therapeutic properties. Composed mainly of calcium carbonate in the form of calcite, the sand is very soft, light and golden in colour and has unique thermal properties. The beach on the island of Porto Santo was voted best “dune beach” in the “7 Wonders - Beaches of Portugal” competition, a prize that recognises the quality and beauty of this beach. The beach, ranked among the top 15 in Europe, has also held the Blue Flag accreditation for almost three decades. Other attractions of Porto Santo besides the beach include the town of Vila Baleira and its natural landscape punctuated by traditional windmills where various outdoor activities, festivities and delicious local cuisine are offered.

Vila Baleira The city of Vila Baleira is located on the south coast of the island and, together with its beach, offers a captivating landscape to all those who visit. The the picturesque town centre, the nine kilometres of beach, its seaside walking paths, some small peaks and an endless blue sea. Vila Baleira is a friendly, clean and tranquil city. As the lights come on in the evening so too does the night life begin, with visitors and locals coming out to have a drink or one of our famous “lambecas” or ice creams.

The town centre is a place where the local population gathers to celebrate, relax or simply spend time together with family and friends. Regarding entertainment, there are several friendly hotels, restaurants and bars, not only on the beach but also in the town centre. The very safe atmosphere combined sand beach make the Vila Baleira a privileged location. This small town is the ideal place to escape from the stress of everyday life of the iodine, calcium and magnesium rich sands that help to restore mineral shortages in the human body.

Where are we? Inhabited by 5,483 people, Porto Santo is the second largest island in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and has an approximate total area of 42 km2. Its capital is Vila Baleira. The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean at the extreme south-west of Europe, 500 km from the African coast (Morocco) and 1000 km from Europe. It is about an hour

Climate The climate on the island of Porto Santo is dry and stable with little thermal variation between the seasons, so it is possible to make use of the beach all year round. The beach is bathed by a sea of calm and crystalline waters. In the summer months, the average temperature of the sea water is mild, between 24º C and 25º C, and in the rest of the year it drops by about two to three degrees.

A Brief History Although previously known, it was not until 1420 that the islands, that now make up the Madeira Archipelago, were recognised and colonized by

Local cuisine Food in Porto Santo ranges from typical regional dishes to international cuisine. With its proximity to the sea, there are limpets, caramujo (type of sea mollusc), octopus, amongst others. Other typical regional dishes include beef skewers accompanied by fried corn, or the famous beef “picado” served with chips and a delicious sauce. Bolo do Caco is a signature regional dish which, despite its name suggesting a type of cake, is actually a type of bread made rounded breads.

The bread is baked on a preheated or without garlic butter. For lovers of fruit, Porto Santo is a true paradise. Fruits such as table grapes, tomato are abundant on the island in summer. For those with a sweet tooth, Porto Santo presents typical delights such as cake, which is traditionally linked to the Festival of St John.

Discover the windmills of the Portela belvedere This belvedere is surrounded by three windmills and offers a view of the entire south coast of the island: to the west, the beach and the Ilhéu da Cal islet; to the east, the conical form of Pico de Baixo, de Cima islet, the harbour and the marina. 4. Climb to the top of Pico Castelo This peak is located at 437 metres above sea level and provides an exceptional view of Porto Santo. This is also the location of a small fortress built in the sixteenth century to counter the frequent invasions of French and Algerian pirates. The peak was formed by an old volcanic chimney. 5. Admire the unique form of Pico de Ana Ferreira The irregular prismatic columns of this peak were formed by the slow cooling of magma that had built up deep within the volcanic conduit and are known locally as lookout from which de Fora islet, Pico do Facho and Pico Castelo can be admired.

highest point With an altitude of 516m, Pico do Facho is the highest point of the island. In ancient times, torches were lit here to warn the population of enemy ships approaching. It is also possible to walk through the Serra de Fora valley located on the eastern slope of Pico do Facho. 7. Visit Fonte da Areia In the past, this location was the source of the purest water on the island, with its waters even used for medicinal purposes. As a result, it was considered sacred by its inhabitants. Water no longer runs from Fonte da Areia like in the old days, but the wind erosion has left its trail along the sandy rocks, providing visitors with an incredible legacy. The spot hosts extensive accumulations of eolianites. The eolianites, whose sandy particles are mostly composed offragments of mollusc shells and coralline algae, are an inheritance from the marine life that existed here,and are the source of the sand presently found on Porto Santo Beach.

8. Visit Calheta One of the best ways to enjoy Porto Santo is to walk along the beach from Ponta da Calheta to the idyllic beauty. 9. Experience the bay of Zimbralinho fountain and fantastic turquoise waters. Here you can see underwater volcanic formations known as “pillow lavas”. 10. A walk in Morenos This pleasant green area, characterized by its coastal cliffs, is an ideal picnic spot and has a beautiful view over do Ferro islet. 11. Admire the Ilhéu de Baixo ou da Cal islets This islet once formed one of the extremities of the island prior to its separation caused by erosion. Walking trails

PS PR1 - Vereda do Pico Branco and Terra Chã Distance: 2,7 km (+ 2,7 km de regresso) Medium. Duration: 1h 30m (each way). Start/End: E.R. 111 / Terra Chã Maximum / Minimum Altitude: 450 m/184 m This trail leads to the location where the highest in their best conditions. Following a path to enormous prismatic geological formation called Rocha Quebrada.

PS PR2 – Vereda do Pico do Castelo Distance: 3,2 km/4,6 km Medium Duration:1h30/2h15 Start/End: Site of the Moledo / Mirador do Canhão. Maximum / Minimum Altitude: 435 m/225 m This trail features two possible routes: one on the north side and another on the south side of Pico do Facho. The latter is the longest walking trail on the island of Porto Santo and offers From this trail it is possible to witness traces of the old agricultural area and the arduous work involved in building the paired walls, as well as to contemplate the fantastic reforestation efforts on the island. A statue of Antonio Schiappa de Azevedo, a great reformer of Porto Santo, is located at the top of Pico Castelo. Indigenous species to be found range from the dragon tree (Dracaena draco), olive trees (Olea sp), holm oaks (Quercus ilex ssp. Rotundifolia),

Museums and Monuments Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade One of the main monuments is the Parish Church, also called Church of Nossa do Pelourinho in the city. This church was set ablaze on several occasions by pirates and other privateers that disembarked in the island. Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça Built before 1533, this hermitage is one of the oldest temples in Porto Santo. 1951. The origin of its construction dates back to the 16th century, although it has since undergone changes. Jorge Brum do Canto Museum This museum opened in the centre of Vila Baleira on July 2nd, 2016. It was established following the donation of a set of movable property (66 objects) and a documentary collection (268 documents | 2651documentary pieces) relating to the life and work of Portuguese director and actor Jorge Brum do Canto, who had strong roots in the Archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. Festival of São João Of all the festivities, the most representative and highly anticipated every year is undoubtedly that dedicated to St John, the patron saint of the island. They are held on the 23rd and 24th of June and are part of the Municipal Festivities. These festivities are a quintessential expression of the local culture which characterises Porto Santo and its is the Popular Marches on the night of June 23rd. Feast of Nossa Senhora da Piedade At the end of August, usually on the 30th and 31st, the Feast of Nossa Senhora da Piedade is celebrated in the area surrounding the
