NTI-festivaalin taiteellisena johtajana minulla on ilo kutsua taiteilijoita eri puolilta maailmaa Kuopioon. Perinteisesti syyskuun lopussa järjestettävä festivaali ja Suomi tekevät suuren vaikutuksen niihin, jotka vasta suunnittelevat matkaansa. Jos esitän kutsun puhelimessa, niin jossain vaiheessa keskustelua, oli kyse sitten amerikkalaisesta, australialaisesta, italialaisesta tai japanilaisesta taiteilijasta, minulta kysytään, “onko siellä lunta?” Ei, ei ole, tai ainakin se on hyvin epätodennäköistä syyskuun lopussa. Kysymys on ymmärrettävä, sillä monille ei-suomalaisille tulee maan nimestä mieleen juuri sen talvinen pimeä taivas ja valkoiset erämaat. Ajatus on romanttinen ja se pitää pintansa. Historioitsija Lucian Boia muistuttaa, että suhde alueen ilmaston, asukkaiden ja kulttuurin välillä on perusta sille, miten käsitämme itsemme. Kuten Boia toteaa, ”historia ja meteorologia kulkevat käsi kädessä”. Olemme jo monta vuotta halunneet esitellä talvista ANTIa. Se alkoi hulluna päähänpistona: ANTI, festivaali ilman seiniä ottamassa mittaa pakkasesta, lumesta ja jäästä. Tässä sitä nyt sitten ollaan suomalaisten ja kansainvälisten taiteilijoiden kanssa tarjoamassa ainutlaatuista kohtaamista Suomen talven kanssa. Yhteistyökumppaninamme on Kuopion matkailukeskus Tahko, ainutlaatuinen sekin. Tahkolla on erityinen suhde talveen, silloin se ottaa vastaan tuhansia ihmisiä, jotka haluavat nauttia lumesta ja rinteistä lomallaan. Tarjoamme vaihtoehtoisen après ski -elämyksen Rave for MAD (ANTI after ski remix) -teoksen kautta. Tahkon tapahtumien lisäksi tarjoamme ohjelmaa myös kaupungissa. Esimerkkeinä koreografi Tomi Paasosen teos, joka haastaa Puijolla mäkihypyn maailmancupin sen omassa lajissa, ja maailmankuulu Ice Music. On urheilu ja vapaa-aika, mutta talven toinen puoli liittyy melankoliaan, valkoiseen maisemaan, johon voi uppoutua. Suomalainen Toisissa tiloissa -kollektiivi pyrkii juuri tähän Talvivaelluksella, ohjatulla kierroksella Tahkon erämaassa. Madeleine Flynn ja Tim Humphrey palaavat ANTI-festivaalille teoksellaan Shriek. Se on Tahkolahdelle sijoittuva ääniteos, jossa jää ja tuli kohtaavat kylmät, kohtalokkaat realiteetit. ”On niin paljon väkeä, joka ei sovi kesään eikä kevääseen eikä syksyyn. Kaikki hieman arat ja kummalliset”, toteaa Tove Jansson. Vaikka emme ole koskaan olleet arkoja, niin tajuamme, että ehkä ANTIn paikka on aina ollut talvessa. Toivottavasti kohtaamme siellä. Welcome to Winter ANTI A

s Artistic Director of ANTI I have the pleasure of inviting artists from all over the world to make the journey to Kuopio. Traditionally in late September, the festival, and Finland, casts a strong spell across those who are yet to visit. If I make the invitation by telephone at some point in the conversation, be it with artists in America, Australia, Italy, Japan, the same question is asked– ‘will there be snow?’ No, there won’t be, or at least it’s very unlikely in late September. The question is a sensible one, given that for many a non-Finn it’s the country’s wintery dark skies and white wild spaces that come to mind at mention of its name, a romantic idea but one that persists. The historian Lucian Boia reminds us that the relationship between a territory’s climate and its people, and culture, is fundamental to our sense of who we are, as Boia suggests ‘history and meteorology go hand-in-hand’.

We’ve wanted to present a winter ANTI for many years. It began as a mad thought: ANTI, a festival without walls taking on sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice. But finally here we are with a programme of Finnish and international artists offering a unique encounter with the Finnish winter, by way of our 2016 festival partner, Tahko, Kuopio’s equally unique tourist centre. Tahko has a special relationship to winter, hosting many thousands of people wanting to enjoy the snow and slopes across holiday season. We’ll contribute an alternative après ski experience to proceedings with Rave for MAD (ANTI after ski remix). Alongside a series of events at Tahko we also have projects in and around the city, with choreographer Tomi Paasonen, taking on Puijo’s Ski Jumping World Cup at its own game, and then there’s the world renowned Ice Music. There’s sport and leisure and then there’s that other sense of winter, the one that has to do with melancholy, of a white landscape to lose oneself in. Finnish collective Other Spaces will attempt to do just that with Winter Wandering, a guided tour of Tahko’s wilderness. Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey return to ANTI with Shriek, a sound work for lake Tahkolahti, where ice and fire meet cold, mortal, realities. ‘There are such a lot of things that have no place in summer and autumn and spring. Everything that’s a little shy and a little rum’, suggests Tove Jansson and although we’ve never been shy we realise ANTI’s place has perhaps always been in the winter, if it’s cold there’s always that other kind of rum to warm us…

ce Music is a concept pioneered by Norwegian jazz musician Terje Isungset. In Ice Music, the skills of ice carvers and top musicians will be mixed to create a unique musical experience. The project has toured extensively in Europe, China, India, Japan, Australia, Canada and USA, among others.

World Cup Bling Troopers is an animalistic group of creatures dancing through the city of Kuopio and the skiing centre Tahko. Decked-out in winter sports equipment, these beasts dig into our naturally competitive instinct and the ritual of our contemporary battles. The sports are skiing, ice diving and ice hockey! How to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat?

enevanhus on löydetty matkansa päästä. Se kirkuu, kun sitä vedetään pitkin Tahkolahden jäätä. Lähestytään kohtaa, jossa pienet valonsäteet paljastavat hahmot veneessä. Lyhty lepattaa. Myrsky uhkaa. Vene poltetaan pian.

Shriek (kirkaisu) on interaktiivinen ääni-installaatio, joka rakentuu Tahkolahden jäällä festivaaliviikon ajan ja huipentuu lauantaina 27. helmikuuta. Teos on ensimmäinen australialaistaiteilijoiden Madeleine Flynnin ja Tim Humphreyn teossarjassa, joka käsittelee ”olemassaolon riskiä”.

n old boat is found, beyond the end of a life. Dragged, screaming over the ice, along the Tahkolahti. Reaching a point where small beams of light can reveal shadowy figures on board. The lantern flickers. A storm threatens. The boat will soon be burnt. Shriek is an interactive sound installation, building up on the ice of Tahkolahti lake during the festival week and reaching its climax on Saturday 27th February. It is the first in the new series of works, by Australian artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey, dealing with the concept of existential risk.

Juhlia isännöi kahden tanssija-dj:n ja yhden mediataiteilijan muodostama ryhmä, joka törmäyttää kokeellisen tanssitaiteen ja underground-klubikulttuurin. Tanssimisen ja klubien historia räjäytetään palasiksi ja sekoitetaan mielivaltaisesti. Kasasta nousee Tahkon historian kurittomin after ski!

ave for MAD is a performance, a mad party and a live music set by two DJ’s. The party will be hosted by two dancer-DJ’s and a media artist. The group combines experimental dance art with underground club culture. The history of dance and clubbing will be smashed and mashed to pieces and mixed madly. This will undoubtedly be the most undisciplined after ski at Tahko!

Toisissa tiloissa -kollektiivin luoma vaellusesitys perustuu ryhmän kehittämiin harjoitteisiin, joiden kautta on mahdollista päästä kosketuksiin toisten olo- ja kokemismuotojen kanssa. Tahkon luontoon sijoittuvan vaelluksen aikana osallistujat pääsevät ohjattujen harjoitteiden kautta kokeilemaan uudenlaisia tapoja hahmottaa sekä näkyvää että sosiaalista ympäristöä.

The wandering performance is based on the practices created by the Other Spaces collective. The participants will be able to reach other states of being and other ways of experiencing the world. The wandering will take place in the wild winter spaces of Tahko where participants will be guided and encouraged to try out new ways of understanding the visible and social environment.

inter Wandering is a collective practice and performance - a wintry journey to other spaces.

Vaellus on pituudeltaan noin 5 km ja maasto saattaa olla paikoin haasteellista. Lumikengät tekevät etenemisestä tavallista työläämpää. Osallistuminen vaatii kohtuullista peruskuntoa. Varustaudu säänmukaisesti, veden pitävillä ja lämpimillä vaatteilla sekä jalkineilla.

The wandering route is about 5 km and the ground can be challenging. Snowshoes will cut down your speed. Participation requires well physical condition. Wear warm and comfortable clothes and shoes!

ANTI kutsui äänisuunnittelija Mikko Oravaisen tutkimaan entisen kotiseutunsa luonnon- ja mielenmaisemaa ja valmistamaan ääniteoksen festivaalibussiin. Oravainen kutsui mukaan muusikko Jaakko Prättälän, ja nyt työpari tarjoaa äänellisen oppaan Kuopiosta Tahkolle.

ANTI invited sound designer Mikko Oravainen to investigate his former home region and create a sound piece for the bus journey. Oravainen invited musician Jaakko Prättälä to join the project and now the collective presents an audio guide from Kuopio to Tahko.

ANTI siirtyy sen tutusta ympäristöstä, Kuopion kaupunkitilasta Tahkon matkailukeskukseen. Tämä siirtymä toteutetaan HUMAN/NATURE-teoksen tahtiin.

ANTI leaves behind its familiar surroundings, the city of Kuopio, for the tourist centre Tahko. HUMAN/NATURE will be experienced during this journey.

HUMAN/NATURE on vuoropuhelussa bussista näkyvän ympäristön kanssa. Teos keskittyy kommentoimaan mielenkiintoisia, matkan varrella olevia kohteita, joissa näkyy luonnon ja ihmisen kanssakäynti.

HUMAN/NATURE is a sound piece in dialogue with the environment we see from the Festival Bus. The work comments on interesting spots along the route - the ones where the interaction between human and nature is visible.

Vastauksena festivaalin teemaan ANTI-seminaari esittelee kansainvälisen kokoelman eri alojen tutkijoita ja kirjoittajia, joita yhdistää yhteinen kiinnostus säähän ja siihen, miten se vaikuttaa itsemme ymmärtämiseen. Missä määrin ilmasto - jossa asumme, vierailemme tai jota seuraamme kaukaa - muokkaa jaettua ja yksilöllistä kulttuurista identiteettiämme? Seminaarin nimi on kunnianosoitus Lucian Boian teokselle The Weather and Imagination. Työkieli englanti.

Lavery esittää Samuel Beckettin teatterin paikkana, jossa säätila näyttelee suurta roolia. CARL L AVERY is a Professor of Theatre and Performance, University of Glasgow. Lavery proposes Beckett’s theatre as a place of weather, where, if the sky is something we are always in, as opposed to something we simply gaze at, theatre is always already exposed to the elements. There is no immunity from the weather, no possibility of escaping the sky.

sessä tutkimuskeskuksessa. Dunne kertoo sään ja ihmisen psyyken yhteyksistä perustuen viimeaikaiseen tieteelliseen tutkimukseen ja hänen omiin kokemuksiinsa Irlannissa sekä Suomessa.

ELMEAR DUNNE is a Senior Research Scientist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Atmospheric Research Centre of Eastern Finland. Dunne will discuss connections between weather and the human psyche based on current scientific literature alongside her own experience of living both in Ireland and Finland.

uoksemme yhdessä, juoksemme yksin, katsomme kun joku juoksee, juoksee kadulla, juoksee parkkihallissa, juoksee torilla, juoksee stadionilla, juoksee pitkin Kuopion katuja, juoksee livestreamissa, juoksee videotallenteessa. “Performance” on suorittamista, normien ylläpitämistä ja esitystä. Näemme sen kaiken tässä. Ruumis on katseen kohteena. Nautimme lihaksista, jotka jatkavat liikettä mielen kadottua omaan monimutkaisuuteensa; nautimme rääkätystä ruumiista; nautimme hiestä; nautimme kaikesta, mikä julistaa ruumiillisen läsnäolon ihmeellisyyttä. Fun Run! Mies juoksee juoksumatolla, hän on Feidippides, joka kuljettaa viestiä oman henkensä kustannuksella. Valjastan oman ruumiini kantamaan viestiä yhdessä tekemisestä: minä tanssin niin kauan kuin sinä juokset, olen mukanasi tässä karnevaalissa loppuun asti. Toisaalla katse siirtyy pois ruumiista rakkauteen ja yhteisöön. Lapset näyttävät meille, miten kehossa voi olla toisin: unohdamme vuosien tuomat tavat,

antaudumme leikille, ajattelemattomalle ololle. Liike on ihmisyyden kulmakivi: liike vapaana, autonomisena tilana, liike elämän ja vapauden julkilausumana. Kunnian kentillä opimme hyväksymään ruumiillisuutemme kaikkine vikoineen. Epäonnistumme, kaadumme, olemme kömpelöitä, mutta löydämme yhteyden toisten yhtä vaillinaisten ruumiiden kanssa. Olemme kaikki samaa lihaa, arpista kudosta, joka tanssii yössä vasten vihreää nurmikenttää. Ruumis on edelleen katseemme kohde, mutta nyt rakastamme yhteistä epätäydellisyyttämme. Vaikka juoksemme, liike asettuu kiirettä vastaan. Kukaan ei ole menossa minnekään, juoksemme yhdessä paikoillamme, katsomme toisiamme, katsomme toistemme ohitse, uppoudumme omiin sisäisiin tiloihimme, päästämme irti estoistamme. e run together, we run alone, we watch someone else running, running down the street, running in a parking hall, running through a square, running in a stadium, running along the streets of Kuopio, running in a live video stream, running in a video recording. The ’performance’ is about doing, about expression and maintaining norms. We see it all here. The body is the main focus of our gaze. We love muscles that keep on working even after our mind has disappeared into its own complexity; we love a tortured body; we love the sweat; we love everything that bears testimony to the wonder of a physical presence. Fun Run! A man runs on a treadmill, he is Pheidippides carrying the message at the expense of his own life. I am using my body to carry the message of working together: I dance for as long as you are running, I am with you until the end of this carnival. Elsewhere, the gaze moves away from the body, to love and community. Children show us how to use the body in a different way: we forget the habits learned over the

years, we succumb to play, to a carefree existence. Motion is a cornerstone of humanity: motion as a free, autonomous state, motion as a statement about life and freedom. In the fields of glory we learn to accept our corporeality with all its shortcomings. We fail, we fall, we are clumsy, but we find a connection to bodies just as imperfect as ours. We are all of the same flesh, scarred tissue, when we are dancing against the background of a green lawn at night. The body is still the object of our gaze, but now we love the imperfections we share. And even when we run, the motion is the antithesis of rush. Nobody is going anywhere, we run together on the spot, we look at each other, past each other, we immerse ourselves in our own internal spaces, and we let go of our inhibitions. Motion is meditation, both for the viewer and the performer. Motion that we share brings down barriers between us: the performance takes place in one shared body. sitin ANTI-festivaalilla 2015 Running Beyond Language -teoksen, se oli 26,2 tunnin hiljainen juoksu edestakaisin 250 metrin pituista rännikatua. Se kertoi elämän niistä hetkistä, jotka menevät kielen tuolle puolen: tunteen, järjen ja järjestyksen taa. Se kertoi ajan katoamisesta, kehon voimasta, mielen kestävyydestä. Se kertoi tukemisesta, osanotosta ja haltuunotosta.

Esiintyjänä vaikutuin syvästi ympäristöstä: katu, jolla juoksin, oli urbaani, se oli rakennusten ympäröimä. Ne tuntuivat kasvavan korkeammaksi ja tulevan lähemmäksi sitä mukaa kun juoksin. Kadun molemmat päät avautuivat näkymään, joka sekä herätteli että piinasi minua. Näkymät juuri kadun ulkopuolelta olivat lumoavan kauniita, mutta minun ulottumattomissani, eivät minun maailmassani. Juostessani katua edestakaisin ne edustivat maailmaa, jolle minun oli jatkuvasti käännettävä selkäni. Hiljaisuudessa juokseminen oli uskomattoman vaikeaa. Hiljaisuus oli kuitenkin myös vapauttavaa: ei ollut paineita keskusteluun. Jotkut juoksivat kanssani hiljaisuudessa. Kommunikoimme jakamalla fyysisen tilan, yhteisen tavoitteen. Katsoimme toisiamme silmiin tavalla, joka olisi varmasti ollut erilainen, jos

olisimme puhuneet. Jotkut puhuivat minulle juostessamme, jakoivat kanssani asioita. He eivät odottaneet vastausta, olivat vain hetkessä, siinä tilassa: me vain olimme yhdessä. Olin vaikuttunut katsomaan ja osallistumaan tulleiden ihmisten ystävällisyydestä, kiitollinen lahjoista, jotka sain: aikaa, teetä, nalleja, makeisia, hymyjä ja kannustavia ylävitosia. Ne antoivat voimaa ja kohottivat tunnelmaani. Oli uskomatonta nähdä niin monen ihmisen liikkuvan katua edestakaisin. Oli todella kaunis ja ainutlaatuinen näky, kun ihmiset ottivat haltuunsa kadun, esityksen ja liikkeen. Olen äärimmäisen kiitollinen kaikille ANTI-festivaalilla siitä, että minut kutsuttiin mukaan ja että minusta pidettiin niin hyvää huolta. Oli hienoa käydä Suomessa ja sain kokea sen upean kauneuden, sen kulttuurin ja maisemat, mutta erityisesti siellä tapaamani ihmiset. Minulle on hyvin tärkeää se, että voin ottaa kontaktia ihmisiin. Voimme tunnistaa itsemme muissa, nähdä, että me kaikki yritämme parhaamme, vaikka meillä olisi eri mielipiteet asioista, joista yritämme selvitä elääksemme seuraavaan päivään, nähdäksemme auringonnousun. performed Running Beyond Language: a 26.2 hour silent run up and down a 250 metre-long pedestrian street at ANTI Festival 2015 in Kuopio Finland. It was about the times in life when events happen that are beyond language: beyond sense, reason and order. It was about the absence of time, the strength of the body, the resilience of the mind. It was about support, participation and ownership. As a performer I was deeply affected by the environment: the street I ran on was urban, enclosed by buildings that seemed to grow taller and closer to me the longer I ran for. Each end of the street opened out onto a view that both awakened me and tormented me. The views just off the street were mesmerizingly beautiful, but beyond my reach, not in my world, and as I ran up and down the street it was a world that I had to keep turning my back on. Running in silence was incredibly difficult - at times my body wanted to speak in response to a smile or a hug, at other times the silence could be awkward or unsettling: I was unable to speak for myself. Yet the silence was also liberating: there was no pressure to make conversation. Some people ran in silence with me. We communicated by sharing a physical space, a common goal. We looked into each other’s eyes in a way that I think we wouldn’t have done if we were talking. Other people chatted to me as we ran, sharing things

with me. Not expecting a response, just being in the moment, in that space: just being together. I was overwhelmed by the kindness of the people that came to watch or to join in; grateful for the gifts of time, tea, teddies, sweets, smiles and power high fives that gave me strength and lifted my spirits. It was incredible to see so many people all moving up and down that street. It was a truly beautiful and remarkable sight as people took ownership of the street, the performance and the movement. I’m extremely grateful to everyone at ANTI festival for inviting me over and looking after me so well. I loved being in Finland, experiencing it’s magnificent beauty, it’s culture and it’s landscape, but especially meeting the people there. I find it so important to be able to connect with people, to recognize ourselves in others, to see that we are all just trying our best and although we might have different opinions about things we are all trying to get by, to live another day, see another sunrise. Vaikutelma eroaa niin paljon siitä tunteesta, kun olet kadulla, missä on hankala nähdä perspektiiviä. Olen kiinnostunut niistä eristäytymisen ja yhteyden tuntemuksista, joita syrjäinen maa voi antaa. The next ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art will be awarded in October 2O16. ANTI Festival will be organized around the Prize and the winner 2O15, Australian Willloh S. W E I L A N D : We visited the Puijo tower and I was very struck by how landscape makes you feel when viewed from above, the vastness of all those tiny islands stretching away into the Arctic, is so different from the feeling of being on the street, where it is hard to get perspective. I am interested in the feelings of isolation or connection that a remote country can give you. This is something Australia and Finland have in common! WILLOH S. WEILAND IS AN ARTIST, WRITER AND CURATOR, WORKING AS AN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF APHIDS.

W S W: I’m not telling! But I will say that for me story and site are as important as each other, so at the moment I am researching stories that relate to the phenomenon of obsolescence. I am interested in the story of Nokia company as a contemporary fable about evolution and extinction.

IN HER WORKS WILLOH HAS BEEN EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND INFINITY. OFTEN WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH NON-ARTISTS SHE IS INTERESTED IN CREATING IMPOSSIBLE PROPOSITIONS AND FULFILLING THEM.
